Very nice Lewis. I think if you can get the laquer to take it's gonna look amazing. But, it did turn out beautiful as it is. Great project and nice chickens :D
Lacquer on wet Madrona wood does not always work well. I sand it back, then wait until it dries to refinish the piece. Hope you get some good distortions as it dries. Usually it will pull more where the grain is figured. One of my favorite turnings is a piece with five knots in a circle, turned thin, and it pulled toward center at each of the knots without cracking. Quite unique. Hope yours dries evenly. The wet shavings don’t hurt for slowing the drying.
It's a nice subtle colour that doesn't hide the grain. I look forward to seeing how it turns out once cured. I know it's easy to go from saturated to black, in a second of too much colour. I have a platter I redone platter I wrecked with a slip of 180 grit when finishing the bowl. I got the scratch out, but the colour just wasn't the same, after that. I know it can be a bit of a gamble when dyeing, but I'm anxious to learn and have a degree of consistency in my work. Thanks for the demo, Lewis.

Lewis, I really like the way the very subtle grain comes out with the colour. We have quite a bit of Arbutus (pronounced arbeutus here on the wet coast). I wonder if there might be some oil in the sap,especially if it was cut in the spring? This is a very cool experiment that I might try with some Poplar I just got. Cheers, Rick

Thanks Dave, the consensus is too much moisture. Yeah I moved the chicks out of the shop, they outgrew the brooding pens quickly. They should be laying by October. These will triple the flock. Thanks for watching !
Looking good so far. :). I usually color with alcohol ink. Had to learn the hard way to give plenty of drying time to the ink before starting with sealer finish; in the case of sealer, if the ink is wet the sealer can start picking up the ink and moving it around. wet ink + shellac == oh those are some weird brown discolorations. Great turn Lewis! I like the light color, but kinda wish the purple at the bottom hadn't gone away. I think the blend from purple to green would have been amazing. I don't have an airbrush yet and have only tried color blending on 2 pieces: it"s not easy using just a brush, paper towel, and denatured alcohol. Great video. Wes @ Piedra Designs
One option, Joanne's (craft store chain) sells small spray bottles of alcohol ink. Usually works well for coloring, just have to wait for it to dry fully before moving on. I spray on and then rub it around with a lint free cloth.
Well done on all accounts. The wood is very interesting. Looked like it was extremely plain until you added color. The color really enhanced the grain and made the piece interesting. Your shape, while being very basic, is a classic and will look good in any decor. The stain colors you selected worked very well. They looked great even before you added the sanding sealer. So sorry you had all those issues starting with the sanding sealer. Hopefully they will work out once cured and you are able to work on it again. Looking forward to seeing how you work it out. I’m sure it will be gorgeous.

Thanks Tim. I think moisture is the issue. I really like the proedge with the diamond belt. Really great for the longer grinds on gouges and nice for the skew. I still prefer to do my traditional grind on the CBN and wolverine jig. I appreciate you watching!
I have never heard of arbutus wood but it sure turns brilliantly, at least when it is rather wet. In fact Lewis, have you had any experience with turning it when it is very dry or knowledge from people who have turned it dry? It is a ver nice shape & the finish is very interesting in spit of its difficulties. It will be nice to see the final finish in the near future. Don from South Aust.

Arbutus (Madrone in the US) is one of my favourite Timbers to turn. If turned wet it distorts in interesting ways. I have done hollow forms that were coloured and lacquered with very good results. As this is prone to crack I ruff turn and then boil and finish once dry. Just wondering if you used a lacquer sealer? I spray on two coats before the lacquer.
Do you need to sand to 1000, as sanding beyond 400 is undetectable when applying a lacquer or urethane. Sanding to higher grits is beneficial when applying a thinner oil finish. Will you add another coat of lacquer to cover the dull spots near the bottom as seen at 15:25.

400 is detectable in the colouring so I took no chances. I’m on the fence about the fix but will show what I do. Thanks for watching!
