Woodturning Scrap Walnut Surprise

  • This is my first attempt at turning a true hollow vessel. I used some scrap walnut off cuts from the legs of my end table build. This was great fun and I plan to make more hallow vessel type pieces in the future. I got some new tools I am using in this video, I plan to go over all of these as well as the new finish I am using in a video soon. This may be the last time I use the urethane resin for a while, I want to go back and try the epoxy again now that I have had some experience with the urethane. Hoping to get a solid technique locked down so I can share some useful information. This was the closest I have come to having a mold fail in the pressure pot. I don't think I will try a diameter smaller than 7" with the polycarbonate sheet. All and all I am pretty happy with how this piece turned out. I really liked the black mixed in with the blue resin. I think the proportions are a little off in the finished piece, but I may just be too hard on myself. Will definitely be trying this one again down the road. Thank you very much for watching and I hope you have a great day!

    The way the wood layout gives a beautiful spiral effect. Also, the spacing enhances that as well. Excellent in all ways! Looking forward to seeing future projects.

    Very nice. Very good shape. Good proportions. Very good color. Good production. Don't care for the music, but I don't like any music. I like the sound of the tools. I would like some commentary or at least a few captions. What brand of resin and the source? What thickness of the polycarbonate and the source? How long in the pressure pot? Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

      Definitely something I will be trying in the future. It’s on my list for future video ideas. I’ve always really liked the way resin looks butted up to charred wood. I’ve made some pieces in the past using electricity to burn the wood and back filled it with resin. It is a very cool look. Thanks for watching! Hope you have a great day!

    A very elegant piece with the wood and resin shapes. I can’t wait to hear about your tools. I have a Jet midsize lathe and am wondering if there is a hollowing system I can use for deep pieces like this. I also noticed you using a buffing pad of some kind. That is also something that looks interesting to use for a smooth and perfect finish. I am enjoying your videos and hope you add some narration or subtitles down the road. Thank you

    That is the best combination of wood and resin turned into a vase that I've seen.
    Still a bit confused about the original "off cuts". The dimensions seemed to be pretty accurate or is that just me?
    Anyway, congratulations. This was brilliant.

      Thanks for watching. The off cuts were from a previous video of building two end tables. I did cut the pointy ends off so they would fit in the pressure pot, but I just got lucky the angles worked out. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. I hope you have a great day!

    Another amazing piece! You sure got lucky when the secondary glue failed on your mold!! I notice the pieces of wood you used all had the same “twist” to them. Was that from the design of the table legs you got the cut offs from? Did you polish the inside? Or what did you do there? Your precision is inspiring and clearly a sign of the exacting craftsman you must be with “flat work.”

    • @squareandlevel
      @squareandlevel  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Those scrap pieces were exactly how they came off the end tables I made. Wasn’t really a twist to them, those were just the angles I made the table legs at. Definitely glad I didn’t fill my pressure pot with resin. That would have been a unfortunate mistake. Thanks for watching! I hope you have a great day!

      This pot has a max height of 12 inches. I ended up choosing this one because of its height too. It was pretty much the biggest one I could find before the price increased significantly ( think I paid $70 for it). Good luck with the table legs. Hope you have a great day!!

    If it doesn't bother you, use the advice
    Place a “container” in the tank in which you will lower the product. The additional capacity will protect your main tank if the filling compound leaks.
    Otherwise, what leaks out will remain in the tank forever, and this is sad
