It occurs to me that this was far more about creativity and pushing the boundaries of what's possible on a lathe, than it was about producing a functional bowl with mass appeal... and that's why I come to this channel. So thanks.
I ain't gonna lie. That piece of wood spinning on the lathe looked scary 😬All I could imagine is it coming off and flying through the air ✈😵💫Lots of suspense in this episode lol
Yup, came here to say that there were several operations I’d be scared of. There’s a shot where we can see the operator and you’ll notice he is standing out of the workpiece’s plane of rotation and the axis of the tool.
@@MaxG628 while it’s a good idea to stay out of the “firing line” it’s no so much about the piece coming off the lathe. I’d say that by about 5 years of full time turning you know what’s going to hold . A drive spur used correctly for example is a far safer hold than a face plate, although many would think the opposite.
That is far better than I thought it would be. Making the bowl was genius, following the contour inside and out. The grain and finish is stunningly beautiful. Great job Jack.
You read that burl perfectly and did it great justice. I love that you saved the burl surface that others would just turn away. Great skill and talent there young man.
...my opinion???...you can do whatever you want with a piece of wood and as long as you show off the beautiful grain, it's a win to me... And this is beautiful...very well done...👍 Matt
Without getting all soppy and doe eyed. ... this is a beautiful piece. You're truly a top craftsman. I'm just a crusty old codger watching these pleasing works of art come to life
Loved the slo-mo. No way I'd attempt turning that with my crappy eyesight. I always try and figure out where the project is headed. This one kept me guessing and wondering. Neat looking piece. Advice on UV curable liquids. I worked in a gravure printing factory that had some UV curable inks. They are known as sensitizers and can make you you breakout in a BAD rash. Maybe not the first time, maybe not the third time but maybe the sixth time or maybe never. If you get a rash it will always get worse with use. Avoid getting it on your skin and breathing any heavy fumes. Stay safe.
From my understanding, this finishing technique is far less harmful that any of the traditional methods. That said, I would never allow it to touch my skin. Thanks for the heads up though. Are you still printing?
The wood was so beautiful. This had the potential for a beautiful charcuterie hybrid board, dip bowl, serving bowl, bread and flavored butter bowl, or fruit bowl. It seems it needs to be flatter on the bottom and two pieces that fit together like a puzzle to make it stable. That way it functions in a kitchen. I also envision a gorgeous bowl and an equally elegant slab to match. I would love either in my kitchen. The slant prohibits it from holding much without spilling. My brain keeps wanting to fix it and put it upright. If it was simply decorative, I would probably put pebbles in it from my travels or honeycomb. Maybe it’s growing on me as is while I think about it?
I'm surprised by how many people dont like the results. With a burl, there are never any guarantees that it will be something good inside. What you can make is often chosen more by nature than the person doing the work. In this case, the place where the bowl was made was determined by the thickest, most concentric spot, which did not happen to be in the center of the burl. After that, creativity and experience are what determines the possible. Most would shy away from wings this big, but you really did a great job. You even managed to save a nice piece from the outer part with that saw trick. I am humbled and astonished at what I saw. Great job, and it's really cool. 👍
@JackMackWoodturning I wouldn't say a lot, but I've had the chance to dig into quite a few different types. Most of my experience is woodcarving, Lathe work is a more recent thing for me. So a lot of the burls that I've worked have been quite a bit smaller, and ended up as kuksa/Cuaich. My brother sent me a present from New York state, a Hickory Burl that was the size of a bowling ball and as heavy as a ball of marble. I couldn't believe how much of that thing was voids and bark inclusions. But the remainder had some really cool grain. It's always fun, even when they aren't perfect.
That must have been a pretty exacting piece of work. Watching I feared that the irregular shape and excentricity would blow it off the lathe. (Kept my head down for not being hit 😉 ) Love the beautiful grain and the fact that you stuck to the natural, irregular form. Great piece of craftmanship 👏

@@JackMackWoodturning I have not worked with much burl at all. I have been using free wood since I started turning about 2 years ago. Where I live in New England in the USA.
