Great presentation! I like how Traxxas still uses the names 'sledgehammer' and 'sledge' in their products. Nice homage.

My dad had one of these when I was 4 or 5 years old. I remember playing with it on the floor thinking how cool the shocks and suspension was. And later on I remember melting a battery with the charger that had like a timer dial and needle voltage gauge on it lol.

Seeing all that white plastic brings back memories! My old Kyosho stadium truck had a lot of it…pulled the cobwebs off of it years ago and half the ball cups shattered after I hit the first couple hard bumps…lol. Hopefully that Sledgehammer holds up. I don’t blame you for wanting to take it easy with it.

I remember back in 2000 seeing one in a box next to a stamped but I figured newer the better, so I ended up with a rustler with the mechanical speed control. I remember the radios took 8 AA batteries back then and ran off the frequency crystals, but now holy cow!!

That was a great truck, and tough as nails... I even raced that unit for giggles a few races and other then nicking tires with another truggy and flipping me, each time I would have placed 3rd..lol.. Yes, a wee bit top heavy, but, what a fun truck. Yes, I know, this was never intended to be a race truck, but, dang was it always begging to smash on the track...

Really nice work on this one, Luke! Back when I was in high school in the early/mid 90's, I used to drool over this truck but could never afford it. The white pastic, although more fragile, is a must have for me. If you havent tried already, get a heated ultrasonic cleaner. They are amazing and it really speeds up the cleaning time.

Oh man! I loved seeing that wiggly waggly body! those body mounts were both great and awful at the same time! I sold mine to a buddy so he could get into RC too. I miss that truck! If for some wild reason you are ever wanting to part with it please let me know!!!! I completely understand the eye roll and chuckle that gave you as well! I doubt you'll ever give that one up! Thanks for sharing and I loved seeing it out running!!!

This is my absolute favorite video and project that you've done. I love the sledgehammer! I've owned several of them, I agree with you, the later black plastic versions are so much better than the original. Much more durable, you can actually run them without breaking anything

I just found your video because I found my old one in a closet. Packed away many many years ago when it stripped a gear. I barely remember getting it from a local hobby store. Used I believe, as it has several non stock parts. I am going to end up trying to see if I can figure out how to and find the parts to make it run again.

@@LukesVintageRC Thank you! It looks like plenty of the parts are still around for them! Awesome. One thing I haven't totally figured out yet, mine has purple shock towers, control arms, axles, bumpers, and body mounts. Traxxas branded on the bumper at least. And the shocks appear to be aluminum? The chassis is the white. Do I have a slightly different model or did someone buy all the upgrade parts?

Just got mine out of storage this week. Looks amazing except the body needs replaced lol. Where did you get your decals from? MCIracing has em, but noticed a bad spot where they overlapped part of a decal over the right side of the blue hood stripe. Looks horrible. Yours look maybe original? Anyways, great job on yours!

nope not a fully restored first gen Traxxas Sledgehammer thats a 35 year old rc truck. The plastics at this point would not hold up to the torture. Run 6s or more on Traxxas x maxx or Arrma or Redcat racing vehicles.

I remember when that thing came out. But if u notice look at all the times Traxxas has stole things from other RC companies. Like on this one. All the white plastic and TA RC/10 is the first to do that. But Traxxis with the new Sledge copying Aarma kraton. Which was bold being since Traxxis has sued Aarma back in the early 2000's for using kennyleaver shock set up. But yet u can go back and lock at so much stuff that Traxxis needed to be sued for and still do. Thats how they got alot of their start up money
