XCOM 2 Live Discussion (Previously Recorded)

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 22 ธ.ค. 2024
- Rich and Jack are running late with the XCOM 2 review... so we did it live.
Taken from the February 28th live Twitch stream the is just us Talking about XCOM 2.
So this is a Previously Recorded version of a live broadcast of Previously Recorded Live.
I created this video with the TH-cam Video Editor ( / editor )
I really miss Rich talking about videogames
Lol not jack huh.
All the people shitting on Jack clearly didn't even watch the full video, so I'll just quote him for anybody too lazy or dumb to pay attention:
"I really, truly believe that XCOM 2 is a wonderfully competent game. I think that every battle won was earned. Every loss was earned. I did something dumb. All the right numbers are there to make it a good game, and I'm just not that into it."
He makes it really clear that he feels uncomfortable recommending it because it's not a type of game he really grasps the way Rich does, and when he contextualises that by saying that he likes action games he's doing so to make it clear to the audience that his bias affects his perception. He couldn't be more honest and straightforward here, and he's clearly trying to like the game for what the game is trying to do (he spent 50 hours on it and still has positive things to say). So him catching shit from people is just vitriolic, hyperbolic internet culture ravenously doling out an extreme position because they're not mature or nuanced enough to look at a perspective outside of their own. Well done, internet warriors.
I mean Jack consistently has bad takes, so I can see why people hate him so much.... everything he usually says is stupid... in this video he was fine.
I miss you guys... I know I can always see ya on RLM, but still... Damn. I miss watching your game stuff. RIP PreRec
I agree with you, RaveFM. I just brought up on twitter how my Wednesdays and Sundays have not been the same since the PreRec days! *sadface*
Did half of the people in this thread miss Jack complimenting the game left and right? So many people here see Jack/Rich not be 100% on board with something they like and freak out, while, on the other hand, Jack puts 50 hours into a game that he assumes he won't like, had great things to say about it, and in the end concludes that it's just not his style, while still appreciating many aspects of it. Anyone see the hypocrisy here? Jack and Rich constantly have different opinions from each other and the majority of the viewers, and that's what makes them interesting. If you want someone who mindlessly regurgitates your own opinions back at you, go somewhere else or grow the fuck up.
You know what?, i even think Jack is bullshiting, he actually loves the game as he loved **Enemy Unknown** the first hours he played it. He is just taking the contrarian position to make the review debate interesting. Also i love the game, i'm not as into it as Rich is and i kinda get the point that Jack sustains here, i feel that disconnection from the action and kinda bothers me a little.
I really like this format. Unscripted free-form commentary but without the distraction of playing a game in the background like with the other streams.
With the exception of the mid-stream glitch, please consider doing these kinds of discussions more often!
+kwijung I'd be more than happy to fulfill your request, but there's currently a back order for my own death. Can you wait roughly 40-50 years?
+Smidge204 completely agree with you! This format was awesome. Don't listen to weirdo creeps telling you otherwise!
+Smidge204 MORE JACK!! WE LOVE YOU ,JACK! AND YOUR OPINIONS!
😭
"Aliens, in the hooooouuusee!"
very cool
Hey Jack, sorry to hear you were ill. Do some of the symptoms include talking in 3rd person?
Jack isn't a scumbag. He got bathed in the blood of the blue alien from Edge of Tomorrow.
:P
When are we getting the official Jack Packard XCOM character?
My primary critique of XCOM 2 is solely a technical one - the cutscenes in the game often run like trash, even on a decent gaming PC. I'm also finding the mission loading scenes with your crew on the Skyranger are occasionally frame-y.
Aside from that, the game is a blast, and I love the mod support.
Oh, and some friends you should make in this game as soon as possible: Plasma Grenades, EMP Bombs, Blue Screen Rounds, AP Rounds, Mimic Grenades, and Flashbangs.
When is Space Cop 2 coming out?
+Jessica Crawford It should have a subtitle, no number. Get with the times.
+Jessica Crawford
In 24 years. Because that's 2 times 12 years, and SC1 took 12 years to make. So the second should take twice as long. Because it's the sequel.
+Jessica Crawford It'll take 12 years to make.
Agree with Rich, XCOM is crack. The first time I played XCOM: Enemy Unknown is played it for 11 hours in a row.
Like Rich, I have nearly 1000 hours into XCOM, and I LOVED XCOM2, but I can see how it's not for everyone. My only real complaint about Jack's conclusion is that he "doesn't recommend" it, rather than just saying it wasn't for him. "doesn't recommend" implies it's a bad game, and it clearly isn't a bad game.
+Tom Yamamoto yes, it does. why would anyone not recommend something that's good?
fried chikeniesha " jack believes its not your average gamers thing"
no. jack believes it's not jacks thing, and that's perfectly fine, but he never said that it's not "the average gamers" thing.
Jack: this is not an action game!!!!! that is like saying I hate chess because I cannot punch the opponent and do body slams....
+JAFO-PTY Precisely the reason why I don't like chess. Or checkers.
allluckyseven so did it take you 50hrs of playing chess to find that out too?
***** no, he said he wants to shoot FPS style and no base management, seems to me he looking for these things in the wrong game. that's all.
JAFO-PTY Of course not! But I did play those 50 hours anyway. Just to be sure.
+JAFO-PTY He gave it a fair chance, got some enjoyment out of it, but ultimately it's not his style of game. He's not saying the game is a failure because it doesn't please him personally.
It's like going with your wife/girlfriend to a romantic comedy when you don't like those. You can admit that it's a decent rom-co,m but if you discuss it at length, your criticisms will come back to the fact that you dislike rom-coms.
"It´s like fucking Crack" .... exactly my feeling about the game.
+JAFO-PTY same. I am on my 3rd or 4th play through already.
Is there any way I can play the video in reverse to un-hear Jacks ridiculous opinions
Seven years already
I've put 70 hours into XCOM2. It's maybe my favorite game in years. It's so unbelievably good.
How I play XCOM is I always set out to make an A Team, B Team, and C Team. A Team is my group of badasses, B Team is the back up, and C is the backup of B. A usually goes on the most missions, while B and C change off when A Team is healing. I try and keep the members withing the same teams but if someone is injured I substitute someone from the 2nd best team possible. It's thematic and feels cool to role-play like that.
Scott Bartek I'm going to try that
I don't know why everyone is hating Jack, he clearly stated he doesn't like the genre, so it's not like he's just saying the game sucks, it's just not for him and he explains why.
The more interesting question for Jack would be, how good he thinks the game is. I dislike watching sports events. Yet I can say with near certainty, that watching a pro basketball game is better as a sports event than watching a gymnastics class for elderly people.
3:58 here's Rich's answer to Jack not liking the game.
Watched the whole thing. All I got: Jack: "That's part of my sausage problem..."
I wonder if a happy medium for Jack's "sausage problem" would be where each soldier had a fixed stat, like "x% to hit at 10 squares when the target has no cover", and then you had to make an educated guess which soldier has the best shot and if a shot was worth taking, but you didn't just see the explicit number that made it feel like you were rolling the dice. I also agree that cover is not visually intuitive enough; some half-cover things are modeled too tall, where it looks like they should be full cover. I don't think the complaint is that the environments aren't making themselves present enough, I think the complaint is that you NEED to use those cover icons to know which cover is which, so it creates a layer of separation between the player and the game world. The former sounds like it'd be a pretty serious overhaul to the point where it might not be XCOM anymore, but the latter sounds totally doable
Oh no! Jack gave the Aliens from Edge of Tomorrow the whole idea with the save-scumming!
great live review! it took like 10 mins or so to get into it, but once yall got on a roll it was great!
The correct pronounciation of that company's name is Firaxis. So, for whoever's reading this right now: your pronounciation is correct.
JACK YOU ARE AWESOME!! I speak for everyone when I say that we want more of you, Jack!
+Damian Jackson hi jack
X-Com is chess but with obstacles and dice rolls. I love it
Man, in XCOM one, support was my favorite class. Deep pockets for the win! They were nerfed in the expansion but in the original game, between the different skills and equipment you could spec them out to fill in basically any role. My baseline squad was 4 support a Heavy and an Assault.
I fell in love with this game. Been save scumming while started easy, then did normal, just did hard mode. Now it's time for normal ironman mode. Going to be scarily intense. It's my favourite game in years. Haven't had a game where I'm thinking about it while I'm not playing, thinking about new strategies and tactics.
Did you do it?
Why is the shield icon a problem for Jack? I mean it only appears if you mouse over it...
I think you guys are my good luck charm. I'm playing Ironman while listening and I've just gotten two flawless rounds.
X-Com throws my perfectionist "everyone must survive every mission with no injuries" style of play out the window. I'm constantly saving and then reloading saves because my 100+ Aim soldiers somehow manage to miss.
rich's facial expressions are golden
Great review, indepth, balanced and fun. ...but Rich... please don't touch your shoe's sole. =_=
I watched him touching his sole more than them lol. I love them, but that was rough to watch 😂
You guys should come back for the new XCOM
Jack might find XCOM alot better if it's an fps set in the 60's.
I know this channel isn't really active but I wonder if Rich has played Wasteland 2 and what he thought of it.
rich has that "im getting laid now" glow about him.
I like the new format. If that means more reviews, go for it guys.
How can you say the aliens are boring? Snake ladies, flying techno-angels, giant 60s sci-fi monster robot suits, energy orbs
They are boring. The first xcom remake was very well designed and all the aliens felt right in that scenario. Xcom 2 had the feeling of someone standing over the developers saying "Bigger, weirder, more exciting" rather than it fitting into the game's world. Even the whole idea of Xcom 2 seemed wrong: all that stuff you did to beat the aliens in the arms race and out maneuver them? Nope, you lost despite beating them. There's some good ideas in there but overall it's jarring and conceptually weak, like pacific rim 2 compared to the first godzilla film...or something.
@@jumbo4billion the idea of xcom 2 came about because most players that played enemy unknown lost the campaign. And the alien designs and variety are fine.
They did the chrysalids dirty
You should do Stardew Vally, just came out on Steam, and it's very Harvest Moon. Rich has spoken many times about his love for Harvest Moon, and here is a new game in the style.
Jack choosing to dislike a game for not being something its not.
+moviemaker85 Rich here, Jack dislikes it because the type of game it is doesn't fit his personal tastes as a gamer, and that's completely fair. He states his reasons clearly and doesn't call it a "bad game" he just said it wasn't for him.
+Previously Recorded
He's not awesome like you, Rich, that's why he doesn't enjoy great video games.
+Previously Recorded
Venturing into the Lion's den to defend Jack? Brave man.
+moviemaker85 I think IGN will be giving him a job offer.
+moviemaker85 That's normal behavior.
Ever miss a 100% shot? The biggest wtf moment in the game.
Paul Schlock enemies can miss 100% melees on mimic beacons.
Hold up there, traveler! You don't want to go down that road.
This whole channel's been abandoned ever since the Hillside Strangler escaped from that institution and killed all those camp counselors, several years back.
Oh, you can camp here, but I'm warning you, something worse than bears might get you.
Well, go on if you must, I can't stop you. But be careful around these parts. On your own head be your fate.
I am thinking what Jack meant by the "sausage problem" with the environments was about the lack of real impactful change in the map, yes one time it's a forest, the other it's a city, but it's just change of skins, if the forest map had some enviromental hazards, for example wild animals, chance of a landslide, something like that he would be ok with it, just my opinion
In 1st and 3rd person shooters you only control your character, your shooter. This game is just as fun but in a different way because you control your whole squad, which is awesome.
Jack really should check out Desperados! either the original or the new Desperados 3. It's X-com but in real time and in the wild west (alternatively 'shadow tactics' is the same game but in medieval japan). You can let your action skills shine in real time or take your time in 'planning mode'.
I can't believe you guys didn't like the thord!
I'm sure everyone will agree. While this type of production is fine and well, but an edited video is far more enjoyable to watch. Also, I look forward to edited/produced episodes is that they are very different from the streams. There two experiences that I enjoy. Keep it that way. I DO understand you've been sick but please don't get the impression that this format is more enjoyable. It's a simple bland live stream with low quality. Love you guys but if it can be produced and edited, stick to that. I look forward to the next review (DCUO perhaps you fucks?)
P.S. I'm not Gobldygooks. Just keeping the bit alive.
Thousand hours in XCOM is devilish work
Great video.
A lot of things that you guys dislike or even hate... mods have fixed. And I have a soldier who has an Arnie voice pack and I laugh myself to death every time I use him. I shall lamentate like a women when he gets killed. But mods have made this game magical for me.
Of course, Jack would like the enemy that spews AIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDS all over the place.
The vid made me interested in wanting to play xcom 2 again.
I think Jack might have been faking sick to spend all his time playing Bloodborne.
I really like this format. I'd prefer more longer discussions about games to the tightly edited pieces. Let's me pretend I have friends for longer
Snipers hit fine if you bother to build them right.
Perception mod: 15% Scope: 15% Tracer Rounds: 10% = Total: +40% hit
My Sniper was usually 100% hit every shot. I actually had too much hit, but I liked the excess because it fuels Deadeye. Deadeye is -25 hit for +50% damage. With excessive hit, you can power over the penalty and simply hit harder. If you get Deadeye hits over 75%, you're profiting over the penalty. I often had Deadeye hits over 90.
Spoilers: Jack doesn't like a good game.
That is not how opinions work...
Toudo Some opinions are poorly justified.
+Watering Can Jack doesn't like a near universally GREAT game.
+Watering Can Some people can't handle other people opinions.
+Watering Can weird, whats jack doing bringing up good games in the xcom 2 review
I actually preferred this. Always felt regular format was just a bit too short and they needed to skip over some aspects of the game. This way the conversation flows naturally and they get to talk about everything that's memorable.
i know i’m missing something but how do i find out when you do these live videos?
+Jack Door twitter.com/PreviouslyRec Also, if you follow them on twitch you can get an email notification when they go live
FoundObjectFilms ho. no wonder why. i don’t use my twitter much. thanks for that. your the best. :)
This video went from "freely available in my country" (Germany) to "needs a special unlocker app" while I was watching it and I have no idea why. Until now only videos that used music that hadn't been licensed in Germany got blocked. I haven't seen the whole video yet, but it doesn't look like a video that would have such music in it.
Viniciustlc
I don't want to download child porn or join a terrorist network. All I want is to be able to watch and occasionally download TH-cam videos with my regular browser, using my account, so I can write comments.
edit: And it seems it doesn't work anyways. I just started Tor (had it downloaded a while ago, but never installed it) and opened TH-cam and it immediately suggested a lot of Minecraft videos to me, even though I did not log into my account. I have been looking at some Minecraft tutorials yesterday and somehow TH-cam knows that, even when I use Tor.
Viniciustlc
Thanks for the advise, but I have to assume my account is registered as being German (even though I have it set to English language and "worldwide" videos), no matter what method I use for logging into it.
There are TH-cam unlocker addons/apps for my browser and I am using 2, but the better one of the two was forcefully removed from Mozilla yesterday and as soon as I restart my browser, it will be gone. Then I will still be able to watch the video with the worse of the two unlocker addons, but for some reason I can't read or write comments with that one.
Why is Jack talking?
8 years later, SpaceX has successfully launched over 300 Falcon 9s in a row with 3 boosters having launched and landed 20 times each 😯
I hate you, Rich Evans. XCOM this XCOM that, I finally had to try. And I've been stuck in that universe for several days already. A truly amazing game, thank you for yammering on and on about it, when it came out, I gave it a miss because I thought it was some dumb alien shooter.
Btw, I hadn't seen that far in the video yet, when Jack said all his rookies have to bald, I had to laugh. My rookies are also bald, but simply because they're rookies. They earn the right to have hair and hats only after earning Sergeant.
So... Exploding _Alien_ Varmits?
I agree with Snipers in this game. It's sad their percentages can't go that high even with a well modified gun. In Xcom 1 I had a sniper with that highground ability, scope, and eye augments plus medals that gave aim bonuses and basically any shot even from Squadsight was at 90%-100%.
It wasn't broken, it was just late game snipers pulling their weight. We'll have to see if the expansions add back in augments or medals. More stuff to enhance your soldiers.
+Nick Johnson Get an aim PCS and max its effectiveness in the GTS. Give them a grapple suit, and stick them in high ground. Snipers are still awesome. They just aren't completely overpowered anymore.
Them making their shots wasn't OP, especially late game. It was just what I expect a high level sniper full of investments to do. It's that overkill of aim that makes them worth anything compared to grenadiers wich are guaranteed damage and kinda OP with their range and collateral.
+Nick Johnson It wasn't that they hit shots. It was that they could one shot practically anything from an extremely safe distance. And they still hit their shots if you equip them properly in this game.
Linguistic Nazi Comment:
Rich, it's pronounced Myoo-taun, derived from mutation. Mutons are not cows (moo-ton), nor sheep (mutton).
Obligatory Opinion:
Jack, I am happy to admit that XCOM is definitely not a game for everyone, so I respect your opinion. It is an unapologetic turn-based strategy game, made by people who love the genre, for people who love the genre. I believe much of the negative criticism that the game has garnered this time around is rooted in a misunderstanding of the style of the genre. All this said, as a fan that played and loved the original XCOM back in 1994, I am thoroughly impressed with the strides Jake Solomon and the Firaxis team have taken with XCOM 2. I am also thrilled that they have embraced the modding community, and said community has already produced close to 1,000 mods (969 as of this moment, 24 days after release).
My Steam Library tells me I played XCOM: EU for 1221 hours. I've already racked up 130 hours for XCOM 2. So yeah, I'm happy!
I've now watch several hundreds hours of PreRec, and Rich doesn't misspeak nearly as often here as he does on BotW. I suspect it's an unconscious response to Stoklasa's presence...
I thought the timers sucked balls. Modded out the timers, now loving the game! So many excellent mods for the game out already
I don't mind the mission timers, I kinda agree with Rich on the way they improve the tension (as long as they aren't in every mission) but I hate the Avatar Project countdown. I haven't beaten the game yet, but I've lost twice after multi-hour sessions due to the Avatar timer running out, when all I want to do is research stuff and improve my guys.
@@geneparmesan8748 well if you're still playing a year later there's now a mod to reduce or even completely remove the avatar timer! Check the steam workshop you don't even have to fiddle with moving files and crap!
@@Batchall_Accepted I AM still playing, as a matter of fact, but my opinion of the Avatar timer has changed. I still don't like it, but now that I've learned all the ways to knock it down I don't struggle with it. Once the Chosen are down it's easy to keep it at 0-3.
Thanks, though!
have you ever played rtcw ? :)
Only problem i have with the game, is having a soldier stand one meter away from a gigantic creature. And watching her aim, shoot and miss. At least animate the enemy slapping my gunbarrel or something to explain why none of my bullets hit him. I don't mind the miss itself, but it makes me see the wheel spin behind the scenes as if im playing roulette instead of waging war against aliens .
LIVE! from the Hack and Fraud studios!, its the secret stream review, with Riiiiiiiich.... andJack!
I like the old style better. Cuts with game footage allow us to see what you are talking about and better understand your points. This is sloppy.
+Split Atom agreed.
+Split Atom once in a while due to time restrictions (jack's illness) this is perfectly fine; but i do agree it lacks the polish.
+Split Atom Well, I wouldn't say sloppy, I'd say too long, but hey even television has lame or filler episodes because of time constraints. Let's just give them a pass on this one.
@@TreeRockCreations I would give them the pass everytime, if they only came back..
Anyone else tense up at 17:05?
Maybe Jack should try X-Com Apocalypse in real time battle mode?
+wishcraft4u2 you fucking monster.
+wishcraft4u2 I mailed Rich my copy, so no EXCUSE!
Wookiee lol am I missing something? I genuinely like that game and find the real time battle mode quite exciting.
wishcraft4u2 I don't know man, I have fucking twisted memories of it, I love the X-Com series but this one was like the most crazy departure from the standard.
Wookiee What about it did you dislike?
Rich had shit snipers. All you need is a superior scope, superior perception combat sim, and a spider suit for height advantage, none of which are particularly hard to get. My sniper, even when on the opposite side of the map and using squadsight, would never have less than 90% chance to hit. I could reliably use deadeye on the regular.
This is weird, Jack loves board games... and XCOM is just a shiny, more complex, boardgame.
I liked the Avatars a lot, but they would have worked so much better if the main grunts weren't also human looking. Don't get me wrong, I loved the Ethereals (just look at my FACE), but we've heard about their plights and ambitions for the invasion for two games, and it was neat to see the end result of it. If they were the single humanoid looking type leading a bunch of unique aliens, that would have been great. Having them look less imposing also made it more impactful when a single one of the would mince up half your squad. But it was watered down by the ADVENT troopers being ADVENT troopers. Goes for all the ayys, tho. I prefer the design of XCOM1 for every enemy type except the Andromedon (that guy was awesome) and the Vipers, if you ignore the absurdly stupid connection they tried to make with the Thin Men.
Also my 850 hours in XCOM1 have been routinely beaten. Time to load up Long War again.
Really enjoyed X2. Too bad I don't think they'll make another.
Sausage Problem is gonna be the best new punk band of 2016.
I think you guys stumbled upon a better way to do PR
From this camera angle you really do see Rich's midriff's massive girth in all its splendor.
Rich Evans doesn't just like using his brain, he likes using 100% of his brain...
I'm sorry, did he just say, "1000 hours in the first X com?" I don't even have that many hours in a bethesda game.... and I've spent months playing skyrim, fallout 4, fallout 3 etc.
I would love if they did chaos reborn. More so of a chess meets dungeons and dragons.
If you want to be challenged at XCOM just go play Long War. HELLO NEWFOUNDLAND, GOODBYE XCOM SQUAD.
"I have a handle on this" > *50 HP giant chrysallid appears on terror mission because I have screwed up on the startegic layer and allowed the aliens to amass resources*
I'm always an "all or nothing" guy which is why I keep dying in XCOM
You guys should play SUPERHOT. It's the most innovative shooter that I have played in years!
SUPER HOT SUPER HOT SUPER HOT SUPER HOT SUPER HOT SUPER HOT SUPER HOT SUPER HOT
you guys should do a stream of Happy Wheels sometime. It would be great.
I don't know Rich, developers miss out important things Mod's fix.
Jack play Steamworld Heist. It is this genre kind of but you make every shot yourself.
Have you tried the Long War Mod?
You should try the Long War Mod.
Star Wars is to Star Wars Original Trilogy Bluray as
XCOM is to XCOM2
Loved the Spacex joke at the beginning. I love Spacex, but I too was disappointed in the ignition sequence. Plus they were at Cape Canaveral, lots of history there.
Jack wants the aliens to win.
Rich please try out Company of Heores series. It's not your typical RTS.
Im watching this video for tips, lol. Im not very familiar with these kinds of games (played some flash games as a kid but thats about it), and im loving this game but im not good at it at all yet.
Hunker down!! :O
Jack should have played on a higher difficulty. The easy difficulty really is easy after you learn the basics, and then it just keeps going for way too long. The only minor jolt is the last mission, but only in contrast because it's still easy to complete on the first try without a single soldier getting injured if you play pussy enough.
