      Hahaha also Rich is such a M&K elitist that having to hold R1 to switch stances or weapons is suuuuch a chore
      Like...you CAN do it on the fly, it's really not hard
      And yeah, the ninja tool was good, and in 2 I use the crap out of the switch scythe
      Doesn't mean that you can't use other weapons and skills, finding a cheese strat doesn't negate other weapons
      I love pre rec and rewatching their old stuff but they definitely make dumb arguments sometimes
      Like comparing last of us to order 1886 because they're both third person and have cutscenes hahaha

      I don't know Rich's reason, but I don't like it because if Gabe wanted to he could take away all your games in an instant and you don't have any say in the matter. You don't own the games you buy on steam, you rent them form steam.

    • @MADVILLAIN669
      @MADVILLAIN669 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I *buy* digital copies. It's way more efficient than disk-based products, as they do not degrade over time, and most pc games come with digital code for that game anyway.
      Besides you can just download all the games and play them in offline mode forever.

    • @leontate8805
      @leontate8805 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You're not buying anything, you're renting the license to play those games from steam. Which they can take away whenever they want for whatever reason they want. You own nothing on steam, besides the very few actual steam drm free games they have.
      Another problem with steam is that they have the monopoly on PC gaming.

    They have 54 copies of Nukie on that shelf back there. If they reviewed one copy every week, they would have enough material to last them over a year. We're talking 85.5 hours worth of Nukie. If they were to unspool all of those tapes and line them up end-to-end, they would be over 13 miles long.

      +DaveControl There's nothing wrong with Lords of the Fallen. Half of the backlash for that game was sour grapes due to the Denuvo protection and, from those who did play it, most of the negativity came from vocal Dark Souls autists complaining that it wasn't exactly the same. I wish the developers had made it much more different, because their strategy of drawing similarities to those games but stopping midway backfired hard.
      +TinyDancerX99 Bound by Flame is an RPG from the makers of Mars: War Logs and The Technomancer. Their fighting systems are inspired by games like KOTOR and have nothing to do with the Souls games.

      Hurr Durr Saying that having unspent skill points means you haven't unlocked anything in the game is fucking stupid, especially when it looks like he's progressing with different armor. Maybe you don't save your skill points, maybe you spend them on everything at every chance you get, there are some people who save them. They not playing the game the same way you play it doesn't mean they're playing it wrong, and if you enjoy the game, then just enjoy the game. You shouldn't need other people to enjoy the game in order to feel validated. They're not saying anything negative about you because you like the game. People like things, people don't like things. Get over it.

    Quick thing about the cutscene monster encounter that Jack talked about: That creature is called an Umibozu, and their shtick is that they sink ships and kill everyone on board. However, if the captain survives, then it dedicated the rest of it's existence to hunt down the captain. So it's the one boss that needs an introduction early on.

    "There's no switching stances on the fly or switching weapons on the fly."
    Why the fuck not!? That's literally the point of making the shoulder button a shift key and making the face buttons perform the transitions. The control scheme is set up so that your fingers are constantly on the buttons necessary. There are even skills that encourage you to switch weapons and/or stances mid combo, rewarding you with unique attacks and larger stamina bonuses to continue your combos with.

    you guys never mentioned the skill system and you never used combos in your gameplay so I have a seeking suspicion that you never touched the skill tree that gives you new moves for your weapons.

    • @Ablestron
      @Ablestron 8 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      ResonantPilot considering that the combat is by far the biggest selling point of the game and where the game does better than dark souls I would say it's a significant oversight. For instance their complaint about the stance system being pointless becomes bunk when you consider the stance specific skills that give each a vital new ability. or how theres a skill at the start of every skill tree that renders their complaint about the ki system void; dodging refills ki.

    • @Ablestron
      @Ablestron 8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      that being said yea the world isnt as well built and the enemy variety isnt great. so it definitely has negatives. they just missed the biggest positive in my mind.

    • @HobbitHobbibo
      @HobbitHobbibo 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      The point was that the new moves fot the weapons ar pointless, since there exists a weapon, that used in high stance, is enough to beat the game. So the new moveset that can be unlocked using the skill tree becomes redundant.

    • @Ablestron
      @Ablestron 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      They never unlocked the new moves. They said that going between the stances felt pointless because they always felt capable in high stance. In their footage they never used the new moves and they had the skill point icon at the bottom indicating they probably never touched the skill trees at all

    • @Ablestron
      @Ablestron 8 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Also they didnt beat the game. The farthest they got in their footage was the second region; there are 5 regions in the game. Also as someone who 100% the game I can tell you right now that there are several encounters where high stance only play will get you killed 100% of the time. Several boss fights later on would be impossible with that playstyle.

  • @FireXale

    I have deep respect for PreRec, but they have to stop talking about a game before they complete it and they need to stop calling these "reviews" when all they give is an opinion without a full grasp of the game as a whole. The main points half way through the video are, lack of enemy variety, and lack of wall secrets after the first one. There are Nurikabe (The walls with eyes) In multiple levels after the one Jack mentions, in fact, there's one in the level that he compliments for having a new enemy in it that has Nurikabe that you need to get past in order to activate an important element for the boss of that level. Directly after that Jack mentions his personal opinion on customization for games of this style and Rich make a very valid point that in most other games, you take the role of someone else. Jack has pet peeves that should not factor into any review, they are preferences sure, but they do not hamper the overall enjoyment of the game. Just because a game has cutscenes and wants to present a narrative doesn't detract from the gameplay in any way shape or form. I will concede that Wiliam as a character was not very interesting, but that is more due to the fact that, although he is the main character we follow, it's not really his story. He is motivated to be in Japan, but the events transpiring around him are politics he doesn't understand. Nioh is actually a fictional retelling of a lot of Japanese mythology and history in the form of a video game, and it's clear that the game was directed towards a Japanese audience. The narrative is in no way detracting from the overall experience but he's treating it like it's a sin to have it at all. Also, this is a very personal opinion, but I feel that comparing Nioh To BloodBourne isn't really fair. Most call it a faster Dark Souls, but in reality, it's actually more of a mix between Dark Souls and Ninja Gaiden, the other famous game Team Ninja makes. It takes elements from both to make a more unique experience and understanding, although I do agree that it falls a bit flat in certain areas.
    TL:DT Shut up about cutscenes and pet peeves and finish the game before you talk about it.

      "stop calling these "reviews" and instead call them something like opinion pieces"
      are you dumb?

    • @FireXale
      @FireXale 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      A review does have a certain degree of opinion, I'll concede that, but the majority of the review should be objective. If I review a game I don't just call it good or bad, I explain the intricacies of the game and its mechanics and how it flows in gameplay, AND THEN give my opinion on the game as a whole and the mechanics as they apply to me. The problem I have with PreRec is that they treat opinion as fact. "I don't like cutscenes, thus all cutscenes are bad" Its in no way objective. My other main gripe I have with them is that they speak out of ignorance. How can you say you understand a book or a movie when you've only read the first 2 chapters or seen the first 30 minutes? I will admit though that sentence is poorly worded and I should probably fix that, but I don't think my criticism overall have no merit. I want PreRec to get better and I'm just giving my 2 cents. No need to insult my intelligence just because you feel threatened by criticism of other people who in the end probably won't see this. why don't you try and be a respectful human being and engage me in civil conversation?

    • @snart2195

      Why are you acting like I'm upset? Lol, it was a good video, I just gave a bit of criticism. What's wrong with wanting shows you like to get better and more credible? It's not like I'm saying every complaint they have about the game is invalid, I'm just saying that certain things they stated aren't facts, they're opinions, and that those opinions are based on a lack of information.

What i mean is that you could be "Takeshi Sato" (or any other very common Japanese name) a wandering ronin with no noble blood but destined to X. Instead you play as a white blonde muscular pirate chad who happens to also be a weeb who loves dressing up as a samurai. You are not only forced to play as an already built character but it's also a character that stands out like a sore thumb. Imagine playing Kindom Come Deliverance as Martin Lawrence (yes that would be a hilarious easter egg although...) it would be weird as fuck.

I mean opinions are opinions so whatever, but I haven't found any of the weapons overtly OP. In fact I don't really like the chain-scythe. And stances make a huge impact with skills- It feels like they took a really cursory look at the game and made a lot of assumptions.

      A lot of the demons fight just like dudes in armour. Taurus, Capra, and the Stray Demon trio are all just lumbering ugly dudes swinging big weapons in a similar way to Smough. Then there's O&S themselves, Gwyn, and Artorias. DS1 is still more original with its bosses, though.

    Doesn't seem like you noticed that this game is based on an unfinished Akira Kurosawa script about a real life samurai/sailor from the West, William Adams, and that it's been in development for 13 years in one form or another. That seems kinda neat and it's too bad it didn't get out there, but the Bloodbourne/Dark Souls connection seems to have overwhelmed it.

    Nioh has some issues (weapon balance being one of them), but FROMsoftwares games start to get stale. I think Jack and Rich praise them because afaik they've only played Dark Souls 1 and Bloodborne. After 5 games in the same vein, the cracks start to show, and Nioh was different enough while stilling using the formula to be a great experience.

      I have not played a more unnecessarily bloated and stale product than nioh in a very long time. Ugly recycled levels, enemies and a game that needed to last 10 hours but is actually a tedious 40 to 50 hour repetitive, tedious grind made for brain dead people. Console peasants are not helping their cause by praising every terrible exclusive game there is.

    Jack. Rich.
    It took Jack 20 hours to reach the 4th main mission of the game?
    Why does he have so many skill points unspent?
    Did you know there's a ki pulse on dodge skill upgrade?
    Did you know the timing doesn't need to be perfect for the pulse to work?
    Did you know there are new powerful moves and things like parries in those skill menus?
    Do either of you give a single shit about the Japanese myths come to life in the game?
    I don't understand how you guys had trouble with the controls especially the stance and weapon switching, it's not complicated or confusing like you want to make it seem, you press 2 buttons and you're done.
    I just don't agree with your claims of it totally aping souls games, it has elements of it but it's doing loads of things those games don't, but apparently you didn't like all of that stuff.
    It seems like your analysis is based on the Idea that this game can't find it's own place next to dark souls and it has to replace it or something.
    It also sounds like you didn't look into the blacksmith because you can use her services to bump up gear you like easy as pie.
    This is a repeat of your Dragon's Dogma video where you just completely trashed the game because you failed to find the really good parts of it.
    You guys are great, entertaining, and pretty funny but it's such let down when your only thoughts on something are I didn't like it that much stretched out to 26 minutes.

      I stopped watching after they claimed, at the start, that this is basically Souls clone.
      Among all souls-like games, this one actually plays differently in the most important aspect - combat.
      And seriously, if they apparently played for 20hrs with kurigasama and they make ANY comments on combat... For fuck sake, it's like trying to comment on Dark Souls combat after beating the game by only using R1 on only one weapon. It's perfectly doable, but why on earth would you subject yourself to that torture?
      95% of the fun in this game is mastering the combat system, the combos, then starting dancing around the stances and weapons (which also combo into eachother). It's all so fluid and rewarding that it's impossible to gauge this game without discovering them. And the fact that you can do high stance Kurigasama through the game (idk about some of the later bosses though, could be a major problem) doesn't make the game bad, it makes you terrible at the game.
      Finally, they found ONE Nurikabe in 20 hours? Jesus fucking christ.

    Although I think most of your critiques have merit, you compare it too much to Dark souls when in fact is does have a lot of differences.
    Nioh is based in 17th century Japan, so a lot of the supporting characters, William Adams, and the architecture are based on reality. souls games are fantasy games, and while I do agree Yarhnam is more visually interesting, its also not really grounded in reality in the same way Nioh is.
    Agreed that characters/monsters are kind of bland, especially when reading into how strange, and interesting Japanese mythology is.
    As someone mentioned in the comments you completely glossed over skill trees, magic, and the ninjutsu. When I first picked up the game I only used the heavy stance kusablahblah too, but as I got more samurai points I unlocked extra moves, or passives that give each weapon is own strengths and weaknesses. For instance the Axe/Hammer class has passive bonuses against yokai, and generally does a lot of stamina damage. The katana class can be centered more around getting behind enemies quickly, and is generally a fast, less committing weapon (by that I mean you have more opportunities to dodge attacks.
    successful ki pulse is really only helpful in dealing with the yokai realm. early on you can unlock the ability to ki pulse automatically while dodging.
    Bosses in Nioh I honestly think are better than the ones in DKS 2, and most of the DKS3 bosses. Most if not all bosses vary up their moveset at certain points in their health rather than having completely new moves. They also are cleverly made with weak points, but some are not terribly obvious. If you can figure them out it makes the fights very smooth.
    So, yeah. Anyone deterred from Nioh from this review should look further into the game.

    I came to really love Nioh, mainly because the combat system (imho) was much deeper than that of a FROM Software game. The main issue is you need to invest a ridiculous amount of time into beating the fairly boring (and long) main story, and only then (NG+ on) does it get exceptionally good to great.
    I can understand why most people would not want to invest that much time into a game that gives a lukewarm initial impression though.

    Did you even care enough about this game to do a review?
    1.Unspent skillpoints and lack of combos and onmyo in the shortcuts makes me believe you missed out on 2/3 of mechanics.
    2. The Nurikabe are all over the place, stop blaming the game for your incompetency.
    3. "You play as some guy" Except William Adams was a real person and the first western samurai. Having him be the main character in such a politically heavy game is pretty smart, seeing as neither him nor us really understand the inner workings of this strange new land.
    4. The constant comparisons to Bloodborne I think are misguided, Dark Souls would be more appropriate, but since I think Nioh is different enough gamplay-wise I see Dark Souls as being more of an inspiration rather than Nioh trying to cash in on a knock-off.
    5. You didn't even finish the game before reviewing it. I'm sorry "20 hours in" is not enough for this game, especially if you haven't even met another Nurikabe. (Wall-eye man)

      It's not about incompetency or the "git gud" mentality. That's what the rabid Soul fanboy has to understand. If you master a game, that don't make you better than anyone else, that only makes you an embarrassment. If the player didn't like the game, if he was not interested to learn and "master" all the mechanics, if he "only" played 20 hours, etc That his particular problem, he is not obligated to like something you like it and vice versa.

    • @suplextrain
      @suplextrain 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Rafael Teles "If you master a game, that don't make you better than anyone else, that only makes you an embarrassment"
      This has got to be one of the dumbest things I've read all weak. So being bad at a game is fine but being good at it is not? It's perfectly fine to be good or bad at a game, clown.
      That said if you "review" a game without completing it, not understanding or learning a bunch of mechanics and stuff the game offers and even complain about things that are not even valid (like saying X doesn't exist in a game when it does) then your predibility is down in the dumps for quite logical reasons.
      This is what turns these "reviews" into just a collection of their thoughts based on a limited time with the game, as in entertainment. As a useful review or interesting discussion of the game in question it's borderline useless.
      This is all fine btw. But people sharing their thoughts on the video is just as fine as Rich and Jack's thoughts in the video itself. Heck pointing out things that are factually incorrect is also perfectlly fine.

    I'm gonna do it again, I'm gonna talk about Ultima Underworld. In this first person action rpg, from early 1992, older than Wolfenstein 3D, nothing prevents you from simply dropping items on the floor in some kind of safe location. It's also not a big deal to come back for it later because of all sorts of short cuts you can discover. Then of course the earliest edition had memory limitations that made the game terminally glitch out if you stored too much shit in the same place, but that's fixed in the GOG version.

    I just began playing Dark Souls, and I think it's the closest I've come to becoming immersed in a role playing game. It's because the world is very solitarily and silent most of the time, and your character interacts with it through combat mostly. There isn't this separation between combat and the story.
    When a giant wolf attacks you out of nowhere, you kill it like it's trying to kill you. When you meet an npc, you're glad to have someone to talk to, just like your character would. You can kill npcs, I choose not to because I don't want them to die. This is immersion.

All you did was beat off Bloodborne, and Nioh isn't better than Bloodborne, but it's is way better than Dark Souls 2 and 3 and at least is a good shakeup to the formula.

    Well shit, thank fuck I bought the game before I watched this. I love this game- I've been having an absolute blast with it, and I've completed it twice now, with a level 1 run on atm. The combat in Nioh is so smooth and stylish, and surprisingly deep and skill intensive. Being critical of the world and it's design is fine, but the focus of the game is clearly on the combat, which you guys barely delve into. You will pay the price for your lack of vision >:(
    (Also, there's a Wall Mimic in every main story mission after the second, just so you know)

    Wow they didn't even try with the protagonists design, it's just Geralt of Rivia.

    I haven't even watched this video and I'm honestly disappointed again. "It's a game about finding a Kusarigama and then using a Kusarigama and no other weapon." Jesus, I really hope they didn't do that.

    Rich called my exact playstyle in Nioh with the Kusarigama, and high stance.
