    Hi Action Kid. Thanks for this video of my old neighborhood. We lived on 41st and Newtown Rd off 30th Ave from 1960 to 1969. I was 6 to 15 yrs old back then. At 10 yrs old, in 1963, I could safely ride the Steinway street subway and buses into Brooklyn and Manhattan. In the summer we slept with our windows open. There was no crime. 2 family houses were selling for $ 10,000. We rented our 2 story house for $100 month. My friend in grammar school's dad was a NYC policeman and he bought a new 1964 Chevy 4 door sedan for under $2,000.
    I remember our milkman delivered in glass bottles, the diaper man picked up, cleaned and returned my younger brother's cloth diapers. We had coal delivered to our house. I had a Sunday paper route and delivered the Long Island Star Journal. I picked up my papers at a 44th st store off 30th ave. I think the paper was a nickel or dime. The papers went in my cart and off I walked delivering the papers all around up to 24th ave. I remember an outdoor metal Coke machine. Always cold, 6 oz glass bottles of coke for 5 cents.
    I recognized some of the infrastructure, streets and buildings on your film. Most of the stores are not familiar to me. That fish store may have been there. The bricks that made up the Astoria theatre building were familiar to me. Gaudio was called Villa Gaudio (15 cents/slice) before they expanded and added the 2nd floor apartments. I washed my family's clothes in that Laundromat on the corner of 41st. My mom gave me a quarter for a comic book, monster cards, or baseball cards across the street at Otto's candy store. Otto's was where you say the new Mexican food restaurant is opening. Key Food is in the same location. Next door to Key Food on the same block was A&P. They had a half inch of sawdust on their supermarket floors all the time. I went to St. Joseph's church and school from 1st through 8th grade. Sometimes they rang the bells at 3pm on Sundays. Why? I don't know. Maybe because all of the Sunday masses were celebrated and it was time for Sunday's meal. There was a rectory for the priests and a convent for the nuns. The film, The Bronx Tale with Robert DeNiro was filmed on 30th Ave around 43rd to 46st. They also filmed at my old Bryant HS on 31st Ave around 48th st in Woodside. Today, 50 yrs later I am happily married for 35 yrs., retired and live in Port Jefferson, NY. I have a bird feeder and I too am visited by a woodpecker. God bless. Have a great spring.

    I see you came up from all the way down at the Astoria Projects. I lived in those projects. Brutal. Looks the same in a lot of spots. Less bars on 30th Ave and more restaurants. That's a good thing. NW corner of Steinway that Candy Cigar store used to be a good pizzeria. We ate a lot of pies from them. I see you walked past my old brownstone at 46-06 30th Ave. So many nice places were added to eat. I like it. Glad to see the people who live there now have pride in their neighborhood and keep it up nice. Its a very nice place Astoria.

    • @NomadicBrian
      @NomadicBrian 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @anders damin The apartment got broken into a couple of times, gangs roamed around or hung out in the buildings, fights with broken bottles, screaming and guns many nights. Muggings and plain old beating people up for amusement. .A jolly old land of unicorns and faeries you see.

    • @NomadicBrian
      @NomadicBrian 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @anders damin Hopefully not. Back when low income housing started in NYC the city was moving people from slum lord buildings. It was a step up from there. But crime finds a way in heavily populated areas where everyone poor is tossed together. They became even too hard for the police to patrol. Whenever I watch the old show 'Good Times' I think back to my life in low income projects. The real way to handle things now is to have smaller units and distribute poor people with needs into neighborhoods where they will blend in and adjust. Not feel like they are living in a war zone. 😊

    • @NomadicBrian
      @NomadicBrian 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @anders damin My cousins who had money always lived in Long Island or upstate NY and they kept moving further and further away. I accepted city life had its good and bad points. I also knew I was not going to live in a house in the suburbs like my cousins. Guess I was the poor relation as they say. Now moving up to 46th st and 30th Ave in Astoria was a whole new story. That was a beautiful neighborhood. We all knew each other. Anyone could walk the streets young and old and be safe. That's my hope for America's future.

    OMG! I LOOOOVE THIS VIDEO. I use to live here and walked that long walk to 30 Ave and to Steinway St. I saw stores that was still there in the 70's and 80's. My old school is still there I.S. 117. Thanks for sharing. It brought back so many memories. I really missed shopping in Astoria. But there's also so many changes. Walking that long distance everyday seemed like nothing when I was younger. The guy recording this wasn't even winded. LOL! I wish he had gone by my old high school William Cullen Bryant. If you watch the movie A Bronx Tale. My old high school was the school the kids attended in that movie. Some really good memories.😌

    This is my home neighborhood, from as far back as 1957, which I left in the 80s. Great job of filming and narrating! So much is the same and yet so much has changed as well. Just past St. Joseph’s, across the street, is where much of “A Bronx Tale” was filmed, and the church appeared a lot in it

    'New York is cold, glittering, malign. The buildings dominate. There is a sort of atomic frenzy to the activity going on; the more furious the pace, the more diminished the spirit. A constant ferment, but it might just as well be going on in a test tube. Nobody knows what it's all about. Nobody directs the energy. Stupendous. Bizarre. Baffling. A tremendous reactive urge, but absolutely uncoordinated.'

    I grew up here. Moved to Southern Indiana when I was 34. The cost of living in even a declining area like Astoria Queens is still way too high. Not to mention there's no work that could possibly sustain basic necessities. I still have no idea how anyone affords to live there.
    Anyway, I appreciate the nostalgia trip!

    • @dootyminnozezelochi2257
      @dootyminnozezelochi2257 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Astoria damn sure isn't declining now...
      But I'm sure the cost of rent has gone up a lot... if you don't mind me asking, how long ago did you leave and how much was rent for a typical two bedroom apartment?... the listings I'm seeing online these days put it at about $2200 to $2800.

    • @JasonCodreanu
      @JasonCodreanu 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dootyminnozezelochi2257 I left there about 7 years ago. I don't remember how much I was paying in Astoria but I lived in Washington Heights before I moved, that was $3200 for a two bedroom. I think it was because it was a block away from the 1 train, but still not a great area. It was 191st and Audubon.
