How to adjust your motorcycle's rear suspension springs for pre-load

  • Too stiff, or too soft a suspension may not be suitable for all riding preferences and styles. While a soft suspension allows for better shock absorption and a comfier ride, it isn't very good for the handling prowess of a two-wheeler. On the other hand, for a two-wheeler to be able to handle well, the suspension has to be on the firmer side, but that comprises comfort. As a solution, to suit various riding scenarios and preferences, modern motorcycles come with an option to adjust the suspension spring preload, especially on the rear suspension springs. The rear suspension springs of quite a few motorcycles can be multi-step adjusted as per the rider’s choice. In this video we'll show you how you can very easily adjust your bike's rear suspension for its stiffness levels.
Now, while there’s a special tool meant to adjust pre-load, you can do it with the more easily available monkey spanner as well. The flexible size of a monkey spanner makes it suitable to adjust the preload on springs for a variety of motorcycles.
For this video, we have used the TVS Apache RTR 160, which comes with a gas charged, 5-step adjustable twin rear suspension. The process for adjusting the preload for single or twin suspensions is the same, and after seeing this video, you should be able to adjust the suspension of your mono-shock equipped bike as well.
Preload adjustment is done by making a fixed point on the suspension ride up or down the notches, or ‘steps’ placed above the spring of a suspension system. As the fixed point rides up the notches, it stiffens up the spring, and as you bring it down the notches, it winds down the spring. With a stiffer setting, the springs get more suitable for enthusiastic riding around bends, while the wound-down setting delivers a more comfortable, absorptive ride quality.
In order to adjust the suspension, first adjust the monkey spanner to be able to grip the adjuster unit properly without slippage. Once you get a good grip, adjust the notches one by one, steadily, to increase or decrease the suspension stiffness based on your preference.
Since the suspension on the RTR 160 demo bike here is a dual suspension unit, you need to make sure that the units on both sides are adjusted to exactly the same level to ensure that the bike is properly balanced. Having the same preload on both sides would ensure predictable dynamics - otherwise the handling of the bike may get negatively affected. In case of a mono-shock, however, since there's only once spring, you don't need to bother about any such thing. Once you have adjusted the suspension, take the bike out for a reasonably long ride to ascertain whether the ride quality has been adjusted to your liking. If it's still slightly softer or stiffer than required, further adjust it slightly to suit your requirement.
Watch the video to understand the procedure in detail, and do share it with your friends who you think would benefit from it.

Haha..I've watched a couple of videos on preload adjustment and some say softer suspension means higher ride height, some say lower and some don't say anything.. it has been frustrating

Hi my name is Akash chaturvedi. I am an owner of TVS Apache RTR 200.
From few days there is noise coming from my bike's engine this is coming after changing the clutch center hub. So I took my bike to the service center the name of the service center is Arvind TVS Agra after visiting there they refer me to Shiv Shakti TVS. After going to Shiv Shakti TVS they started analysing my bike they told me that please wait we will solve ur problem. They started opening the engine with hammer and chisel which resulted scratches on bike's engine by seeing this I asked what you guys are doing they replied by saying this we don't have tools to open the engine. After this they put my bike on other side and they started servicing other bikes I was told to wait and They kept me waiting for 6 hours and after that they say to me I have leave my here in service center. The whole day of mine got wasted and all the members of Shiv Shakti TVS were very bad they were not dealing with me properly and I have a question for TVS that they hire these kind of mechanics they don't know how to open the bike's engine. They argued with they abused me and most importantly there was team manager named Devdutt Yadav he was really bad and he was not dealing with me properly. He started arguing with me and he said that whatever you want to do against me and the service center you can do but I will not fix the problems that you are facing in your bike. I have a question that is how TVS deals with there customer. I m really fed up with this and I will a strict action regarding this and this is my humble request to TVS kindly respond to the email and give me a appropriate answer for that behaviour done with me and solution for my bike also or else I have to take some legal action regarding this issue and I have the proofs with me what has happened with me today and I will post all that on social media because the behaviour wasn't tolerable. If you guys really care for your customers then give a positive reply to me.

Does compressing the rear spring make the ride stiffer or softer, or does it only change the ride height? I have a 2003 Honda rvt rc 51 and i weigh 135 pounds, or 62 kilograms. It is a stiff ride, but seems to handle good. My spring is set at fully expanded. Should I compress it?

Hi, compressing the shock would make the stiff ride but handles well with little uncomfortable ride, follow the factory recommended setting for your bike..
