It's time to move on from this.

  • I take the newly built ladder out to the cliff, with some firewood and odds and ends, to stay the night for my first sleep in the loft. Luna is with me, so I wanna take her on some fun adventures too, taking advantage of the fact that there is no snow there. Woooo hooooo!!
I’ll show you some places on the property in this video, and also start working on adding structural integrity to the loft. But between this and the ladder set up/install I’m feeling like I need to move on from this - it’s time to walk away from the inside of the cabin and start on something else. I’m pretty sure siding is next on the list. 😁
Thanks for watching and see you in the next one!
    M 💝💝
(Ps - I do think the stove top fan did help distribute the heat more evenly throughout the cabin. Thought the outside temps were warmer than my last visit, the cabin was more comfortable this time. I was very warm in the loft, and the morning temperature inside was about 8 degrees Celsius with outside being about -5 Celsius)

An idea you might consider: Cconvert the ladder to a "library ladder" with a bar across the top and wheels on the bottom so it could be moved side to side.. It then could be left up and could still be moved out of the way if needed. - I am extremely jealous of what you have there and very impressed with what you have accomplished with it!

I would take a metal pipe and mount it underneath the bed at the end. Then, I would make two holes in the long wooden parts of the ladder and thread them onto the pipe back and forth. When the ladder is not needed, you can slide it completely under the bed, pushing it upward where the end is secured to the ceiling with a buckle. Simple but effective 😅

Michy, whatever you choose to do with the ladder, you need to ensure that it will not fall down while you are in the loft. At the very least temporarily I would attach a rope to it and something at the top. With the size of the dogs that you have around one of them could easily bump it enough for it to fall, making it almost impossible to get down, and heaven forbid that it fall on one of them.

  • @stanleykeith6969

Michy, use those dock supports to hook the ladder up with pins or long bolts. Mount those above the window. Put it on the side above the window. Use a pulley mounted to the ceiling and a rope to pull it up out of the way if you have enough room to do so. Put a cleat to tie the rope up and hold the ladder out of the way when not in use. Spray bleach on the wood to kill the mold. We hope you don't fall off the porch. Be Safe !

For the loft ladder you can put a 2x6 against the wall under the loft and out past it to allow the ladder to slide. Add a 2x6 on the left and right side. Drill a hole for the solid rod that will act as the hinge for the ladder. Drill two holes at the top of the ladder. The basic look would be like a towel rack in a sense.

Michy, at the top of the stone wall why not lower your stuff with a rope. Have you hubby install a pulley so you don't cut the rope. Install something out over the edge with a pulley. Tie up what you need to send down to the next level, Push it over the side. Have the other end tied to the back of you truck on the hitch maybe with another pulley and let it down slow. Beats carrying everything down those long steps. Just a though. You might have something at the top of the wall so you don't fall over, like a railing, one one the deck might be a good idea also. Wanted to tell you about this be for. Good luck.

I think you made the correct decision to forgo the steel plates to connect the boards in your loft. But you may still want to keep them apart orherwise. Try cutting 4 small blocks like 1" x 3" and lay them between the boards 20" in from each end. You'll still have sufficient open space for air and your mattress pad will keep them in place for the most part. This will also allow for contraction or expansion of the long boards. Also, look into library ladder rails for your new ladder.

An idea I've had for loft stairs that is admittedly not that rustic (and I may not be able to explain without drawing it) build a (floating) box frame off the loft extending out, and secured to ceiling rafters with wood posts or cables at the outside corners - and then install a fold down attic stair in the box frame - securely attached at the loft, the outside (floating) corners of the frame would only need to support the minimal weight of the stair unit when closed. I've also seen loft ladders built with door hinges on the treads so it can be collapsed to a lot thinner for storage

The view is breathtaking for sure Of you and your cabin But yes please Michelle put up a railing one small slip could be devastating 😢 We all love and adore you and enjoy watching your projects So please always be safe ❤ I like your idea of putting the ladder at the end and having it slide over and fold up underneath your loft It would only take a few l brackets and a short piece of pipe And of course a loop to hold it when you folded it up 😊 Love seeing the pup with you as well ❤ When will we see foxy Roxy again L o l

My point as well. Accidental trip/slip would be devastating. And what about the pups - can’t imagine if she lost one because no railing. Lovely shot of the pup sleeping but my dog rolls over in her sleep all the time!

Barn track with a hinge at the top should work. You will want to put a pulley with a rope and dock tie off to pull it up and store.

Your ladder doesn't need to be one piece. You can cut in in half and hinge the back side, then hinge it to the loft, then have a pully to hoist it up when not in use as it folds in half. The pully can even have a separate wheel that allows you to lift and lower it once you are up in the loft. Use one of those wheels you found like the one @ 14:25.

Swivel hinge from right to left. Bottom secured to loft edge. You could rig it so it works as a guard so you don’t fall off when sleeping.

Insulation on inside cabin would help plus I’d put railing up on deck before someone falls off and get railing on your ladder to help you up and down don’t forget to clear in ladder so it doesn’t kick out on you

Yes, I think your ladder looks great. Love that live edge and the grain looks really tight, like old growth. And, I don't think you need those flat plates on the loft boards. You'll have some rigidity without them.

Maybe install a raw board lengthwise down the center underneath of the bed to add safety and matching your theme

I think the ladder looks great in the cabin. I think you should go with a metal rail with rollers so you can slide it out to use it and then slide it back to store it away up against the bottom of the loft. you can always take a cut off from your wood mill with the live edge and attach it to the side of the loft that you can see so it matches the live edge of the ladder. really love the view you have of the lake from up there. its very beautiful. also I wish you would put some railing on your deck so you won't fall off by accident.

Try a barn door rail and rollers. Place the top over the kitchen counter area.

Use a horizontal pipe that extends back under the loft. Hinge the ladder in the pipe, slide under loft and stow against bottom of loft. Have Steve design a little counterweight system for it.

HI Michelle. The ladder turned out to look really nice. A thought is to use the dock hinges and hinge the ladder to the wall caps/beam run it parallel to the bed like you wanted and use a pulley and cable to lift it out of the way. Might work the way you wanted. I personally like the idea of the library ladder someone else mentioned. Brackets on the top with a steel rail and wheels on the bottom. It showcases the ladder and can be moved out of the way as needed. Thing is, we're not there to experience the space and not sure if either one is suitable. As far as the loft deck goes, I would put a strip of wood or steel angle under the boards on the side where the groove is cut in the cross beam. That's your weak spot. It will give some margin of safety for the boards sagging or shrinking. The top boards you are adding will spread the load out more but won't prevent the boards from slipping out of the groove. So now the butt kisses....I'm blown away by your achievements, tenacity and energy...and of course your eyes. Bravo. Take care.
