- My $1,000 Benz tried to kill me! In this video, I'll show you how to smoke test a Mercedes to find leaks. Then I'll show you how to replace the thermostat and water pump replacement. I've done this a thousand times and never encountered a more difficult task than this Mercedes. You can't believe how bad the engineering is in this car!

Look at it this way Mike, you're working as a mechanic for a dealer and you just had all these problems, the service manager is mad and wants results. In your case yes it was frustrating, but you did it, and your frustrated, but nobody yelled and it's finally done, and you learned a lot while doing this job. Great work.

Mike, I've often wondered if there was a special German auto vocabulary to use while working on them or can you use the Land Rover/Range Rover one, with a slightly fake German accent? Great video as always and Thank You to you and Randy for saving the deserving Mercedes and BMW's from the foul clutches of LKQ at great personal cost and mental anguish and yes, a person does have to take a large part of a day to admire that wonderful German engineering as you tear half an engine down to reach that one bolt.
We learned so much from you Mike every day is a mysterious journey into the unknown but a little hard labor it pays of in the end it made me smile through the whole video specially how to fix Mercedes Bens😊

Hi Mike, I have 2 great loves in my insane automotive life Mercedes Benz and Range Rovers, got 3 mercs and 2 Range Rovers. You truly need to buy yourself a Range Rover as you will never curse or doubt mercedes engineering again keeping Range Rovers on the road or off road as the fancy takes. But there truly is not anything quite like a well sort Range Rover, only problem is getting them that way 🤣🤣🤣 Thanks for the brilliant content and give lola a hug from me. Got 6 Black Labradors and a Jack Russell to add to the insanity here as well.

Hey mike you could have sprayed a slight mist of super 33 spray glue by 3m. On the back of the pump then put your gasket on . The glue will hold your gasket . Great job mike !!

I noticed your ASR light is illuminated... I had one car (a 1993 S500 w/ same M119 engine) that had a surging idle and ASR light, the problem ended up being a broken MAIN power wire to the throttle body motor (inside throttle body) broken solder joint inside throttle body harness.
GUYS....DID YOU HEAR?......SOME GUY WAS PUSHING A MERCEDES OFF A CLIFF WITH A BLACK POODLE TYPE DOG BEHIND HIM......

Are you sure it was the vacume leaks that caused the surging? That model doesn't have the garbage eco freak wiring harness does it? Because that would be a symptom of that if it was still in the car, though I think they got rid of them by 98.
I was thinking the wiring loom issue too. Nothing worse than a demon car that is trying to kill you. 👍

Car and truck companies are hiding more and more things in front of the water pumps good video sorry it was frustrating I been there on allot pf cars when comes to water pumps final answer water pumps suck .

Hey Mike, check the fan clutch, it will cause it to overheat while idling, even with the thermostat out?
Mike , coolant temp will go up without a thermostat ( nothing to slow down the water flow to remove heat )
I removed the old one and the car still got hot. That’s why I replaced the water pump
One thing I learned is don;t cuss in front of the kids. So try not to cuss in front of Lola. You dont want her picking up on bad words.🤣 Cool video though.
The abs asr issue can be many different things. Your autel will give codes, I’m sure.
With the age of the car you may need an abs motor. This is a permanent magnet motor with carbon brushes that wear down with age. If you have patience you can remove the motor from the mounting block and order just the brushes from McMaster carr.

That way you HAVE to take it to the dealer and they charge you $5000 to fill your washer fluid 😂
G'afternoon Mike ☕☕ . 120° isn't even operating temperature but I'm guessing you meant 220° 😋 . Frustrating it maybe, look at it this way. The new water pump and brake pads are a good thing as well as cheap insurance my friend, bravo. Get the vacuum leak squared away, have a cup of coffee and call it a day ☕☕ 🤠 ..

After this, Mike will switch to Lexus. I personally never liked this style merc. It looks bloated, no shoulders at all. You need to reset the service light as well.

All my euro cars run at 80°c. You may have a bad rad or you got a bad /wrong thermostat.
You may have gotten a winter thermostat. It should say on the box or paper inside.
Did you test the old thermostat. Your original problem may have beeen the water pump and not the thermostat.
When my 85 300d would overheat, and other cars, I could take the thermostat out and go without it till I could get to it.
That design you have looks bad.
I don't think a German designed it. Maybe a Frenchman or Russian. 😅😂😅😂😅😂
