- Thanks to Randy at @AutoAuctionRebuilds I've added a 1998 Mercedes S420 to the hooptie fleet! In this video, we'll take you on the journey as we purchase the Mercedes W140 classic car and give you a Mercedes S500 review. Yes, I know it's an S420, but I'm hoping to get more views with that last reference.

That tapping is likely to be the cam oiler tubes - common failure on these and an easy fix Mike - love the channel btw

My 300d turbo diesel did the same after 170k miles. A set of lifters and a couple hours later it purrs. Best built diesel on the planet

New air filter and a little more pressure on the tires and the straight six is getting 25 mpgs. I see a lot of potential on the new w140 too as a red pig Rally Clone 😁😁

The silver s320 from the introduction got the bas mileage complains. The new one is a V8, of course.
Very good mike and yes drop that oil and put some of that M M OIL i had the same problem and i put m m oil and it ran with no noise

Hey Mikey, i’ve been following Randy and you for quite a while! You seem like a really standup guy! And I would love to see your channel really grow! I hope you won’t be offended, but I have some suggestions that might help. I think one of the secrets of Randy’s success 365,000 subscribers! It’s the incredible variety he offers! Also, when he’s working on the cars, he time lapses and doesn’t keep the viewers watching, and as he is doing all the work. I know you’re in kind of a catch 22 because you need to get up around that €300,000 mark to get TH-cam dollars so that you can afford to buy The more expensive stuff. But there’s still a lot of interesting vehicles, or less! While you love the Mercedes, a little more variety, I think would help you! Check out big Al, he’s getting Low mileage Cadillacs, Mercury’s really interesting stuff but a lot of them are the flood cars in Florida! so that’s gonna be a little tougher for you! Anyway, food for thought I really would like to see you grow!

Mike get your front yard grass replaced w/sod or artificial turf.
older Mercedes form before year 2000 can be interresting because they did not use too advanced engine features, but direct injection Mercedes are EXTREMLY expansive to fix and have lot of engine fails, many MB engines need expansive fixes ~all 100 000km (replacement from camshaft, engine arness (due to oil infiltration), gaskets (specialy from the water pump who can DESTROY your engine if they leak) , hardened engine plastic tubes who broke, fast wearing (scratches) from coated cylinders caused from direct injection etc...A modern Mercedes who is not perfectly maintained is a money trap...

There is no such thing as a cheap M-B. But they do offer plenty of entertainment value as you try to make them work.

wiring harness? throttle actuator replacement. I think wires inside throttle actuator are in bad shape check the harness date. change oilers with with update ones. How many mileage on that thing. I love it!

Stupid question: are the side windows double glazed, or laminated? Not seen a black edge like that before on normal glass. But that car seems so clean inside. Like new !
Double pane windows. My S320 has the black edges, too

The W220s with the 722.6 and successor M113 are even easier to work on and more reliable. As long as you get one that wasn't in salt and understand a very basic pneumatic suspension system (dont touch ABC).
Wish the W140 came with the M113.
