I'm a bit saddened by how rude or ignorant some of those assumptions are. Wow. To me minimalism is about living with only the things you want, need and use. Why is that so challenging to some people? Your clarity and stylishness is inspiring!❤

I was thinking the same thing. This must be comments from people that are new to Benita's channel and to the idea of minimalism. I thought that her response was perfect, what works for her might not work for you and that's okay 👍😁.

After divorce, I’ve downsized 3 times. What my daughter didn’t want was removed. At 60 I find that “stuff” and all the commercialism is exhausting. I’ve worked at creating a calm, neutral space in a one bedroom apartment that I love. 😊

I am in a 1600 sq ft house and I am always decluttering, it's just me and my hubby now, I hate extra stuff, I don't get excitement out of pulling all the boxes down to decorate for Christmas then putting them all away again, that just sounds so stressful to me although I did it for years, even seeing all the Christmas decorations in the stores makes me overwhelmed, I am looking now for what brings me peace in my home, I love the change I am 62, Maybe it's an age thing too

I was an educator and when I helped scholars prepare for exams and they had to spend a lot of time concentrating, every hour or so, I placed brightly colored construction paper on their study table. This has been known to WAKE UP the brain and helps extend study time. I share this because I can certainly understand the pallet you have chosen for calm and concentration, rest and refuge. As for me now, I am surrounded by color! I have lots of wonderful paintings and am a practicing artist, a writer, painter and potter. Color makes me HIGH!!!! And so, it is how I live now. I used to be a natural minimalist-it is a glorious way to live and I moved a lot between the States and Europe and it made things so easy. I was a musician when I was young and we had very little money, so minimalism was a calming and affordable way to exist in our world. Now, I am retired and I have more stuff than ever before. If I don't use something in a month's time, I make a note and it doesn't last long...As I am now settled and have roots I consciously purchased vintage furniture locally. When I buy clothes, I purchase quality and have a one-in, one-out policy and find purging therapeutic! Bravo to Sweden for the intricate and convenient recycling differentiation; Italy recycles as well, but the materials are not divided the way they are where you live. What a joy to come to your home and visit the cats and the calm...Thank you for sharing your time. Take care, S
I want to say that when my parents died, I took photos of objects and photos and now have them in my phone so I can look at them when I want to remember and become nostalgic. If I had kept their things, they would be in a box and put away and I would look at them less, I think. Everybody has their vision of a life and I celebrate my friends' approach to memory and refuge. It comforts me to know they are happy, too.

I watch your videos all the time. I’m not a minimalist, however I find you and your lifestyle so inspiring. I’m amazed that some of the questions and statements from the viewers have been so negative. Everyone is different. You are a wonderful inspiration. I want to tell those people who think that they need more things as they get older that it’s really hard on your families when you die anyway. It makes even harder, though, when they are saddled with having to get rid of all your junk you’ve accumulated. I saw it over and over when I managed seniors apartments. Then I watched a friend get so overwhelmed when his parents died, leaving a two story house and enormous garage stuffed with things they hadn’t used in decades.

My sister did some research into the impulse to buy and the regret after we do purchase things we don't really need. Research has found that there are some steps you can take to stop buying things, but also not feel deprived. Pick up the item and really look at it, give yourself that moment to enjoy it, then take a moment to consciously realize that moment is the most enjoyment you're going to get from the item, then put it back. All those steps make it so you don't feel a sense of loss for not having bought the item. I find it very helpful.

Cold-hearted? I just shake my head. I remember a decluttering show where the host was giving someone permission to declutter a painting their mother had done just before she died. He said, "The painting is not your mother, and it is not your mother's love." I found that very profound and very helpful when I consider what sentimental items to keep (hardly any)

I think minimalism means something different for everyone. One can be a minimalist and have a lot of color in their homes. Or another person might love all white, or black etc. . As you said, need, use and love. I think those are the key elements. I could never be a minimalist, but I do love having a clean, tidy and spacious home. Thanks for the video ! 🥰🦃🍃🍁🍂💗✝

Dear Benita, I was nodding my head throughout the entire video - I understand, sign and underline every single word you say!! In the run of the past couple of years I reduced my belongings tp a similar minimum: I use, need and love every single item and go through them and declutter or replace every now and then. I got rid of all thouse hundreds of „memory items“ - I want to decide by myself when and who I would like to think of and don‘t want to be „urged“ doing so because these things are always somewhere in my living space. I have just moved from a small apartment in the countryside to a one-room apartment. It is actually really very tiny, but modern and somehow exclusive. It took me 2 weeks to decide to move and to complete the process - including packing, organizing and unpacking. My belongings fit into 25 boxes. There were times when I moved and only for my books I owned at these times required 17 boxes! 😂🙈 My furniture is white and timeless and easy to move and combine, so they fitted into the size and style of my new apartment easily. My clothes are 99% black and 100% timeless and of good quality. I take care of my belongings, keeping everything clean, pure and organized. I avoid colors as much as possible, even my cleaning rags and bathroom stuff are grey or of natural colors - I feel stressed and disturbed when my eyes are caught by a pink or orange towel hanging or drying around somewhere in my apartment which is furnished and equipped all white and grey all over. I think living in a pure, clean, tidy and minimal but cosy surrounding is absolutely satisfying and calming. And a decluttered lifestyle brings a lot of personal freedom and peace to me. All thumbs up for this video and all the other ones you have posted! And all my best wishes to you from Germany 🙋🏻‍♀️💛🌈

I have great admiration for you as you have and are working towards what works best for you and do not judge others♥What works for you is great what works for me is great!
I recently mentioned to a neighbour I'm working on reducing my 'stuff' 'decluttering'. To the point that if I were to move I would want to be able to pack up everything in a day without having to decide should I take it, recycle it, donate it or garbage. It really is mind blowing what we are holding on to, but now I see I want to hold on to things I love, or have a purpose; everything else is no long necessary. It feels freeing and embracing the less is more for my home. It will take time but already seeing a difference.

I admire how you are so confident in your decisions. People try to shake you but holding your ground in knowing what you need and don’t need is admirable. When my grandmothers house burned down, I realized that “stuff” can be replaced (or not). People and making memories are what we hold dear.

I am surprised by the questions people ask. Do they ask themselves why they feel the need to surround themselves with stuff, while continuing to buy more stuff. Why keep items which serve no purpose or function, or are kept boxed in a garage or storage unit and not used or valued. In my youth I subscribed to more is better until I understood the depth of influence by marketers, as well as understanding I was often accumulating to fill a void in my life. I now live with intentionality. Every person who has come to my home, comments on how calm and comfortable they feel. Such a lovely compliment. Benita, your vlog will encourage people to maybe think about their own environment.

I too like a physical book I can hold, but if I’m decluttering I will donate reference books to my local library, so if I find in the future I want to look at something again, I can go and borrow it back for a short while. 😻 I’m not a minimalist, but I know I have to get on top of all my stuff. I like the way you tackle little areas at a time. Instead of procrastinating on a seemingly overwhelming task, little by little it’s getting done. I’m using the same method with my diet, just tweaking here and there to make it a bit healthier.🙏💖

We need our space to make us feel peaceful. I lived in a very small beach cottage and got used to and loved the small space and minimalist ideas. I had to think carefully about what I bought. I've always been tidy and organised but in the last year or so I've been decluttering and find I don't want so much stuff anymore. My home feels lighter, quick and easy to tidy up and am way more mindful with what I buy. Even my husband has been decluttering the garage. My kids don't like to much clutter in their rooms either and don't ask for much. We are definitely all living now by what we really need, want, value and appreciate and even paying off our home quicker too. It's a good feeling going back to a more simple life, no debt (other than a small mortgage debt), not having to work so much and having more free time.

Good Morning, Benita! (Morning for me 😀) I love your fashion sense - I do believe my fashion sense is that way unintentionally - I have a basic wardrobe, but I love fashion ❤ - I don't purchase trendy items (everything is very basic and I buy quality - so it lasts longer). I support local as well - actually more often than I even realize. I like the phrase 'living with intention' - I feel this describes the journey I am on currently. I am decluttering, at a very slow pace - but I am doing it, I feel very accomplished and 'light' (if that makes sense). Yes, we are all different - and I love that! I myself have been forever decluttering my apartment, I would make amazing progress for a week and then nothing much for the next few months, work and life happened. Now I find myself needing to continue decluttering mine in order to inherit some of the things from mom which I love. A huge task but I really want to do it as enjoyable as possible because there are so much memory there. I am not a minimialist at all but I keep decluttering things I don't need or have used for a certain time. Yet I have discovered to miss some of them later. But that still doesn't keep me from decluttering. That's how it is. Some things I've kept for years and after throwing them away, I realized they would have just been useful a few weeks later. I used to hold onto sedimental objects and photos but that all changed once I moved from the USA to the UK. Packing only a few boxes and suitcases from a 3 bedroom house is not easy to do. 3 years later, we moved back to the USA, once again removing all we accumulated. Once you have to do something like that, you suddenly realized how freeing it really is to let it go with no regrets whatsoever. I never went back to the way I used to live again. Minimalists purchase quality, not quantity. All things in our home represent calmness. It is a known fact humans are connected to nature which we showcase in our homes. Ambient lighting, scents, textures etc add to the relaxed feeling. I also watch videos on explorers going into abandoned homes due to death of the owner or some other reason. Everything they have ever paid for and loved is either trashed, stolen or sold/given away. The real point is knowing its all just material things that take time to clean, oganize and fix. In the end, none of it will matter. Many would be surprised to know, family do not have the same attachement to your things. A good majority of your most loved items will eventually end up in a landfill. Through experience, I have learned what is really important...that is life itself, not stuff. I have saved money yet my space looks high end for being minimal. I love it!

I have been set free of keeping things because they belonged to significant people. I agree, each to their own. I have recently moved house, am aghast at how large the collection of goods are, that fill up the very large garage. I am freshly inspired to declutter yet again.
My small simple wardrobe is wonderful. Less choice, but items that are artistic and beautiful.
All in all, declutterting is taking me to the simple clear clean living I used to follow 30 years ago, prior to four children and a full house. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, I take those I love and utilize them in my way.

  • @gothgammy666

Need use and love…that seems like a perfect method for deciding what to keep even if you aren’t a minimalist. I often struggle with what to keep or get rid of. I recently moved and we have a lot to go through when spring comes. I’m going to keep this in mind! I think it will be extremely helpful! I also agree that people often project their own feelings about things onto minimalists. I’ve often wished I could be better at living with less. You know what you need. You seem very content with your life. I’m very much looking forward to seeing how the new apartment comes along.

Having a clean organized not overflowing crowded home is a joy to live in!!! You don't need stuff to remember your loved ones that have gone. Having one or two small items that are special can be enough, it's the memories that are important. I don't have much colour in our home either . I'd read a quote once that was something along the lines of: People filter your choices and experience through the lens of their own, and have found that to be true.
Whether it's something big or small, too many people feel free to express some pretty strong opinions and assumptions, especially without recognizing or respecting individuality. I get that a lot in my own life, for having cut out an abusive, toxic family member, from people who had "normal," healthy family structures. I did get a chuckle in your video when you said you were accused of being cold for not wanting to keep a bunch of sentimental things. Years ago, my toxic family member flew off the handle with me (complete with crying, screaming, swearing, and insults) because I didn't express an interest in having ALL of their many collections in my own home one day. I was happy for them that they enjoyed their things, but their things were not my tastes, nor do I have the space in my home. Yet I was expected to want everything. Full stop. I'd much rather see those kinds of things go to people who will be excited for them.

I keep the “common” areas in our home as I like them, I have very few clothes to worry about. Husband has his workshop (nightmare), and the garage. I have a bag of donations constantly on the go. I am looking forward to clearing out the family photographs as I saw you do. That I will have to do quietly in the basement.🇨🇦

It’s hard maneuvering around someone who isn’t of the same mindset but it sounds like you found a method that works for you. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Love the dress and how you styled it with the shoes! Investing in beautiful, quality natural fabrics is well worth it!

I love that you are a minimalist. I have learned so much from you. Thank you so much!! I also love those shoes you are wearing in this video. Practicality is a dirty word to some but I really feel it enriches my life.

I think it's great and a very attractive way to live. And, if you ever do find you need something you declutter, it's probably something you can easily purchase at that time. Just because you might need something in the future doesn't mean you must store it in all the interim time. I wish I was less attached to stuff. I believe I would be much happier with about 50% fewer items and it would certainly be easier to clean. I am hoping you will continue to influence me to declutter because I want to feel calmer and less stressed in my home. Thank you!

Some questions are completely "déplacées" ...Thank you for saying that a few items do not remplace the memories of beloved and good moments 👍😘❤
