    I had the Saturn version when I was a kid, and I loved it. It was my favorite game on the Saturn aside of Tomb Raider and Daytona. The music in my opinion was the best soundtrack in a sonic game. Especially in Ancient Ruins. The tracks sounded like Enigma and I was loving it! The gameplay was great. The graphics were awesome. I miss my Sega Saturn now lol.

    • @ArtofZenDigital
      @ArtofZenDigital 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The music was ambient and well composed on the Saturn. The fog on the Ancient Ruins stage was incredible looking, with clean transparencies and depth. I know this was a pretty decisive game, but after seeing it at my friend’s house on his Genesis, I had to get it for Saturn. It’s not what we deserved as far as 3D Sonic games on the Saturn, especially after seeing the stunning Sonic Jam 3D museum, but it’s not a bad game either. The only thing that made the game difficult was the speed, which made it feel like skating on ice the whole time, even more so on the ice stages.

    Sonic 3D Blast isn't my favorite Sonic game, but I did really it both on the Genesis and the Saturn. I prefer the Genesis version the most, simple because it's got one of my favorite Genesis soundtracks. I really need to sit down and play Jon Burton's director's cut of it sometime. Whether or not someone likes or hates Sonic 3D Blast, the fact that it was a driving force for Jon to post videos about 3D Blast, 68K assembly and Genesis programming tricks, other videos about Traveler's Tales developed games, etc. makes Sonic 3D Blast an invaluable launching point for Jon Burton's video gifts to the community.

    I grew up with the Genesis version. As I recall it wasn't great to control but it was still fun and the music was great.
    Saturn version looks great -- with the new soundtrack by the same guy as Sonic R -- I'm very much getting Super Sonic Racing 90's dance vibes. Only downsides seem to be CD audio track loading speeds, and the camera angle in the special stage seems a bit off.
    PC version -- I was going nuts when the song didn't change at all for speed shoes (sometimes acceptable but the Saturn did it) and especially for invincibility. Plus the special stage, while more difficult than the Saturn looks worse than the Saturn.
    I had no idea that all three versions had entirely different special stages.

      Aside for music. The Saturn versions OST isn't bad, but I would've preferred CD remixes of RR and VV. The Genesis' PPZ1 was also better, but that could've stayed as the intro song and the Saturn version could be the for the level, or vise versa

      @@Turbotef Yeah, SEGA only cares about the Genesis despite having a much more superior port on the Saturn.

    • @alfo2804
      @alfo2804 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Turbotef It's the same thing they do with the 8-bit Sonic games. In every single official rerelease of those games, they're always the Game Gear versions, which suffer from a more washed out palette, worse sprites for Sonic (looking noseless 90% of the time) and - most egregiously - intense screen crunch.
      Literally, the only way to officially play the superior Master System versions of 8-bit Sonic 1 & 2 and Sonic Chaos are to buy the original versions on the actual Master System. Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 did get releases on the Wii Virtual Console, but tracking down a Wii with either game downloaded is probably harder than buying the original. Sonic 2 only had a Master System version in Europe, too, so you have to buy a European system that probably won't work on your TV if it's NTSC, plus the console itself won't work if you don't live in Europe or your sockets don't supply a 50Hz current. Sonic Chaos, which also only had a MS version in Europe, never even got a VC release, making it way rarer.
      There's just no official way to play the best versions of those three games outside of getting a PAL Master System. I do own one, so it's not a problem to me, but to many people, owning the most optimal versions of those games is completely impossible, which is a terrible shame because they're all worth playing.

    It made me disappointed with Windows version because they didn't mention that these special stages are just a cheap parody of the ones from Saturn version.

  • @zyriuz2
    @zyriuz2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I've tried all 3 of em and my experience with all 3 is and follows..
    1 Megadrive version: this is obviously the simplest and first version but it has very good music and responsive gameplay for being an isometric 3D it's actually really fast. (Post fact the Directors Cut of the game really realizes it's full potential on this game in particular)
    2 Saturn version is basically similar to Megadrive but it has better graphics and the actual 3D sonic 2 special stages that are fun and challenging they're a natural evolution, anyways this time around it adds FMVs it simplyfies the story a bit with as opposed to the Megadrive versions which has text and images to do the story.
    3: PC version is like the Saturn version but with different but worse special stages and the same music as Saturn version the music has a more situational vibe in like rusty ruins you get an atmosphere of rusty ruins but in the Megadrive version you get a catchy tune anyways.
    4 conclusion regardless of version you get the same core game is there but i do wish we had a version that combines best of all with DX gameplay and text screens from Megadrive and 3 different soundtracks with Saturn or Megadrive music but also a remasterd soundtrack that has the melodies of the Megadrive version but still keeps the instruments and vibes of the Saturn version :)

    I look forward for the Sega Saturn version of Sonic 3D Blast/Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island to get the Director's Cut treatment. Here is what I want to see in the Director's Cut version of the Saturn version of Sonic 3D Blast/Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island: standard save/load system, save/load slots, no passwords, let Tails and Knuckles appear in the Gene Gadget and Panic Puppet levels, the option to switch between the Genesis/Mega Drive and Saturn version's soundtracks, the ability to transform into Super Sonic and play as Super Sonic after you get all of the 7 Chaos Emeralds plus 50 or more rings and Time Attack Mode.

    I've only played the original Genesis version on GameCube. Its isometric perspective is a strange choice for a platformer, and I find its sensation of speed to be different from in other Sonic titles because of that and its confined world design, but I remember liking it. Had Sega remembered what made this game good and not completely lost the plot with later 2D and 3D titles, perhaps the Sonic series wouldn't have become the butt of jokes and instead continued to be a solid platformer franchise.
    If I was to play this one again, I'd probably opt for either the Genesis or Saturn versions. The Genesis version has music I find more memorable, but the Saturn version admittedly has better graphics. The Windows version seems good, too, but it seems to me like the hazards in its bonus stages are hard to see.

    • @wishusknight3009
      @wishusknight3009 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The original developer of this game has made an extensive series on it and the decisions they made. And one of his regrets was the sensation of speed was not as good as it could have been. But they were also running into hardware limits as it was. But he figures there was something they could have done to improve at least that one thing.

(The other being sonic CD but I somehow broke it to think it was illigal; no idea how I managed to unburn a sega cd and delete stuff but I think that's what happened.)
    Anyway I always thought the stage effects made the world feel bigger and mysterious; like it had years of hidden secrets. And eggmans scary laugh with cd's made me think he was the satam version. Man to get a scarym intimiating eggman-like villian would be great to see again.

      That's a trick they used for pseudo-transparency effects. The Genesis can't do transparency effects and real transparencies are very tough to pull off properly on Saturn, so showing it every other frame makes it look transparent when the game's not dropping frames.

I was more fond of the Jacques Saturn soundtrack but didn't really care for the game, outside of the demo we got on the Sega Flash demo discs in the UK. An isometric sonic game didn't really peak my interest at the time. I didn't get my Saturn until early 98. The Genesis is still associated with Sega's finest moments. The Saturn unfortunately isn't. And while the Dreamcast was one last failure that caused them to leave the console market, it seems to be still associated to a good legacy. In short the Saturn sits in a grey area, further overshadowed many times over by the PS1 in that era.
