    For everyone that skips the video, the car was in N mode, the car was in boost mode where it gives you 20 seconds of boost. When I write down Sport mode, it means top sport, R mode and N mode for both cars. You can actually hear me say that it was in boost mode. So stop making excuses . Just a clarification:)

      No one's making excuses, u should clarify which driving style u are in is more like it. sport is sport.. N Mode is track. I already knew off the bat the TYPE R is a surgical weapon as an N owner.. feels like u didn't use the full potential of the N.. NGS would cause the engine to work in overdrive & loud, I didn't hear a thing.

    It’s been said everywhere that the type R is just a hard car to launch and that driver in CTR is just phenomenal at launching it 👏🏼🙌🏼

      I went for some all season tires not so gripping and dam I’m fighting through traction 1-2 no matter how I feather it .

    Hyundai don't put power down consistently compared to Honda's. Especially on the Sonata N-line, K5 GT, its really hard to get the launch right.

      Wobbly loose mounts, and weak rubber bushings, that are made for comfort will keep any car from doing a good launch and wheel hop its way into second gear.

    Honestly, kudos to the type R driver! They are so hard to launch properly and he did it consistently. Admittedly, I’m a HUGE Honda fan so this made me happy as I’ve definitely seen Veloster N’s with the DCT beat type R’s

      As a Type R owner I agree. The only thing I disagree with the video is the Type R isn’t stock. Those are not stock wheels and tyres and they will give the Type R an advantage on launch over factory.

      I have a type r I don't see what's so difficult about launching it properly than it is for any other fwd 6 speed manual car.

      @@davemorris6747 You don't know what tires he's running though they could perform less in a launch because I know mine and many other owners aftermarket tires do, the stock tires are very grippy. A lot of type r owners opt for more forgiving all season tires that are softer to give a comfier ride. In my case I run 18 inch pilot sport 4 all seasons. They don't grip as well but the ride comfort is far better and they last longer.

      @@supafance92 very true, I run full 20 inch Pilot Sport 4 S’s. On regular streets, the difference wasn’t major but on a prepped surface, the difference was insane. Getting a true 13.6 on a drag strip was impossible for me with the stock tires

    Good race! Like you said Sam, typeR driver knows how to drive manual. Regardless typeR was going to be faster but N was right behind. For the money and design of the car, I would probably edge towards the N. TypeR is a awesome car though. Thank you for another exciting race.

    Was the driver in the DCT Veloster n even using launch control? And if he was, did he check to see what RPMs the car was set to launch at? Type R shouldn't be gapping a DCT VN when proper tech is used and driven properly

    I saw the Veloster N DCT run 13.2 stock, so it makes me think the Type R isn't so stock. Not too many folks spend the money on those wheels and nothing else.

      Actually alot of people just get wheels first . Because the stock tires on the 20s are not practical for most roads. They bend too easy on potholes. I have a CTR and all I did so far are wheels and tires .
      Why is it hard to believe the civic is faster stock? It's 70lbs lighter. Has 30 more hp and 35 more tq .

Haven't seen a side by side before but this drag race was done a couple of times in one of Motor Trend's worlds greatest drag race videos... Stinger and Type R were participants. Stinger beat it, not by a whole lot but a win's a win.

      True, however, it still would’ve been close. The driver in the Type R is a beast, not many people can launch that car that well. According to car and driver the Veloster is 4.8 and the Type R is 4.9, I can only imagine the Type R with the 10 speed auto. Amazing cars

      I don’t see this as a win. I’m sure if the type r was an automatic it wouldn’ve gap it. For a manual to beat a car like this it’s a win for the type-r . I was expecting the N to win of the line and the type r to catch up but that was not the case great cars

    Sam, did you use the Veloster's launch mode and/or NGS? Those are both systems that allow the Veloster with DCT to achieve it's fastest times. If they weren't utilized, you handicapped the VN right out of the gate.

    Great video thanks! First let me say both are great cars, although I do have a bias as I have a Type R. I thought I saw numbers for the Veloster N and the 0-60mph times were like 4.9 so I was surprised at the outcome! I guessed the DCT tranny would be much faster than the Type R but your video showed otherwise. The Type R typically is a mid 5 second car from what I have seen but a lot comes down to the driver with a manual tranny, props to the Type R driver in this video. The 10 second power boost is a cool feature. Thanks for exploring the different modes, great video!

    Impressive for the Type-R knowing that Manual and FWD usually don’t mix off of the line. The Veloster didn’t do too bad considering the power difference. A Civic with a DCT or the 10-Speed from the Type-S would definitely Gap it. Honda Power.

    To be fair, I think that veloster could have done so much better. The DCT model comes with full blown launch control. It could have shot off the line better than that I think. Maybe i am wrong, but it didnt look or sound like launch control was used.

    If you know the type r driver I'd reccomend doing a video where we can see in first person from his perspective on how he is shifting. I think it would be a super good learning video for us type r owners

      No kidding. As a CTR owner I know first hand how hard it is to consistently launch them well without a tune to set torque by gear. Those aftermarket tires were probably a huge help over stock tires. The stock Contis are great for lateral grip, but they really suck for acceleration. I switched over to PS4Ss and was able to turn up my tune 30lb/ft in 1st and 2nd and still stick.

    Great match up. Type R driver knows how to launch and very fast shifts 👍🏻. Would be cool to see the match up again with the same driver and stock wheels and tires on the Type R.

    Pretty much any race with a manual gear box is going to be heavily dependent on the driver. That Type R driver clearly knows his car well. Very impressed by the consistent launches and 1-2 upshifts. With such close HP and torque numbers I would have put my money on the consistency of launch control and a DCT. As someone who has owned multiple manual sports cars and sedans I am happy to have been wrong here. Any time a manual car beats a stick with comparable numbers it HAS to bring a smile to your face - COME ON! :)

    The TypeR is no joke. I have a new found admiration for the Veloster N. I always liked them, they are cool to me, very different and I applaud Hyundai for making something so different. BUT it’s the Civic TypeR for me all the way.

    No N mode? Was traction control in sport mode or completely off? Noticed you’re comment about it being in N mode even though you say sport mode in the video, should maybe clarify on the video itself, bit confusing. Stock vs Stock the type R takes it every time but not by much.

    It's amazing to watch someone finally drag race a Type R and actually knows how to launch the car and he shifts like a beast. Feels like any other drag race with some newbie car review guy, the CTR always grinds something hard and they just bleed speed every shift they do. It's no easy feat to keep up with a DCT shifting the old school way.

    I own a Type R. It is very slow off the line (just smokes the tires too much) and doesn't start coming on until middle of 2nd gear, then it out powers most of the other cars in it's class from there to the end of the 1/4. It also has gear crunch into 2nd gear. It has amazing torque in the middle of 4th and 5th gears as well.

    I have a VN manual but I’m not bias. But I don’t think he ever hit the button to use the NGS. Being in N mode means nothing if you don’t push the button. IJS.

      It's 280 bhp and 289 lbs of TQ! It is also rumored to have a slightly bigger compressor wheel in the turbo to help with the lack of top end the Veloster suffers from. That and 245 PS4'S tires. Not sure how true what is rumored but it is also said that overboost will bring it to 290 bhp and can be used every 45 seconds instead of the 3 minute cool down the Veloster has.

    Launch Control is needed in this car. Veloster N also has adjustable shifting, and NGS button activated in N mode. I don't believe ANY of that was done. I have driven many 2017+ civic Type r, and I drove a manual 2021 veloster N, and a dct veloster N. Veloster N dct is the fastest of the 3, then civic type r then veloster 6 spd manual.

      Ok well if so then Im not 100% what happened then. Maybe Civic Type R had a few mods? Flashpro? I tell people a couple of my cars are stock, they all have a tune at least lol. Whether it's Hondata, cobb, Sct etc lol. Just my opinion I drove all 3 on same day and it felt to me at least like the 2021 veloster dct was the fastest. Also as per car and driver results. Of course I never did time them / take them to the track.
