South Park Creators EXPLOSIVE $15,000,000 War for Casa Bonita

- south park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone went through a few legal battles before purchasing the restaurant with a group that had a deep fondness for the restaurant and didn't want the place to become a south park joke. They also had to deal with nightmare renovations after the restaurant was finally purchased and south park studios had to contact the owner directly for the episode Casa Bonita to be a South Park episode
I think the reason Matt and Trey bought Casa Bonita was because of actual love and admiration. It's not for a "south park joke", even in the episode they put high regard and respect for the place. Plus I'm sure Matt and Trey as kids went and loved the place.
Definitely, It must feel surreal as well owning a restaurant you went to as a kid. Think they just want to give people amazing memories from the place too like they had too
Yeah that's what they said in the commentary of "Casa Bonita" how much they loved the place as kids and wanted to take their own kids one day to Casa Bonita. Heck they even said there when they called the team who thought they were just going to rip on the resturaunt they only wanted to use it out of respect and yeah if you see the episode it's clear the point is "Casa Bonita is this really great place thus why Cartman is so desperate just to spend time there."
I agree. I mean, come on.
There used to be another location in Arkansas that unfortunately closed in the early 2000s, it didn't have as much of the fancy stuff, but was still great.
Yet it turned into a south park joke
The fact that the "Save Casa Bonita" guy has the "Karen haircut" that Randy gets in recent South Park, just killed me.
I was sitting here going "Man, why does that guys hair look so f'n familiar I never seen him before though"
Then I saw your comment an it just clicked hahahaha. You're so right.
He has been to Casa Bonita 300 times and to shower his hair 0 times.
That might just personally be an easter egg to a personal dig
@@standardofexcellence That would make it 10x better honestly
You’re 100% right! Omfg, they absolutely made Randy into that guy. What a stupendous dork with no clue about business. You can’t crowdfund restaurant management unless you’re insane and love losing money.
Filing a lawsuit to prevent someone from selling their restaurant to whomever they wish is some Super Saiyan level entitlement.
What is worse, what if they won? they couldn't afford the purchase price they wouldn't be able to fix anything just let it rot even more.
Eh, they technically had the right to file an objection since their offer was first and higher, but was rejected. It could indicate unfair business practices or collusion between Matt and Trey and Casa Bonita. But since they probably didn't actually have the money, it wouldn't have gone anywhere
@Thompkins The right? If I have something, I should be able to sell it to who I want for what I want.
we’re not talking about you selling your home or car or whatever personal belonging…this is a sale in the midst of the parent company filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy, which changes everything. you think if i own my own company and then file for bankruptcy with millions in debt i can just ignore a valid offer made for my company and assets and just say ‘yep i have the right to sell this company to this random guy who may or may not be associated with me for an arbitrary amount less than the other offer i got.” and not get immediately investigated for collusion? in the end, it was almost certainly the lack of proof of funds that merited the motion to be dismissed entirely. the owner of the business at this point doesnt get to pick and choose who to sell it to, and certainly doesnt get any sort of influence over the many creditors that need to be paid back.
@MoistOwlet It's not Chase Bank, it's a Mexican restaurant. The owners should be able to choose. Especially when one offer is cash on hand and the other is a dodgy consortium.
That guy is literally a living South Park character. Little does he know, he’s definitely about to be the next South Park joke, possibly episode 😂😂
That what Randy look like when he became a Karen.
My thoughts exactly
I was listening to him talk and I said out loud, "I have never seen someone so eager to be made into an antagonist on South Park" 😂
What a weird episode that would be. Local well known supporter of all things local, crowd sources paying off the people shafted by Casa Bonita debt and possible foreclosure during COVID-19...and out of Towner's with no clue shit all over him....strange episode indeed.
Can't wait
11 years ago I changed careers and started driving trucks over the road. My trainer was from Denver and i'm from Florida. He was planning to stop for a few hours and see some friends and asked what i wanted to do with my downtime instead of hanging out in the back of the truck. He started naming stuff around Denver to do. When he mentioned 'Casa Bonita' my eyes about popped out of my head! I started describe all the stuff from the South Park episode and he said, "oh you've been there?" I said, "no, I saw it on South Park! That's a real place?!?!" Needless to say there was a 30 something grown ass man wandering a kids restaurant taking pictures like a complete dork! Was pretty cool. And the food wasn't bad by trucking standards....lol...
From what I've heard from family in the area is that the food wasn't that bad until near the end there. The menu was more of the older semi-mexican stuff you would see and hadn't really changed...and then the owners seemed to realize that the time was getting close to the end and started cutting corners there. I'd kind of wanted to go there back in the mid-90's when my family went out there, but my parents didn't want to take the time despite hearing a lot about it from my cousins who had been disappointed by ChiChi's when they came east for things compared to Casa Bonita.
I was in high school when the Casa Bonita episode came out, but I didn't watch the show at the time. I had moved to Virginia a few years before from Colorado. I showed up in gym class a day or two after it aired, and one of the kids I hung out with in that class was singing Cartman's Casa Bonita song. I asked him if he had ever been there, and he laughed at me and said it wasn't real. I was so confused. I told him that Casa Bonita was real and that I had been there several times. He told me I was lying. Well, I happened to be going to Colorado for spring break, so I got my parents to take us to Casa Bonita and I took a bunch of pictures. When I came back the kid asked me if I went to Casa Bonita, and I told him I did and showed him a picture of the front of the building. He told me that was fake I pulled off the internet, then I showed him the same picture with me standing in front of the fountain. Then the cliff divers. Then the gorilla. Then the arcade. Then Black Bart's cave. Then the jail photo op.
Then he shut up.
This did get me to start watching South Park, though. I had no idea it was set in Colorado, and I'm glad I did because this was during the golden era of South Park and I got to watch it all as it came out. There are so many jokes in this show that are meant for people in Colorado that most people will never get lol.
@@AzraelThanatos I grew up in Denver in the 80s and early 90s, and visited Casa on many occasions. It was always a magical experience, and I remember the food being pretty good and the prices were affordable for a family of 5.
I returned in 2015 and it was still a cool place, but the quality of the food had declined substantially (like mediocre Mexican-style cafeteria food) and the price had skyrocketed to $20-$25/person. It wasn’t sustainable.
I am beyond glad reading your story...its a magical place and the cliff diving is too cool!
😂 hilarious
Fun fact: my dad was a contractor who helped build casa Bonita and even caught the native American statue in the bell tower on fire while welding the base plate. He also did alot of the beautiful scroll-work on the wood interior. He was their first kitchen manager. Skip ahead like 30years, and he and my mom own a ranch in the REAL south park, Colorado (park county, fairplay area) and he has no idea about much of this. I'd love if trey Parker or Matt stone were able to immortalize him in some way, because real coloradans think that its a great fit for them to purchase the place.
Write them about it
I strongly support for you to write to them about it
People outside of Colorado wouldn't even know or care about Casa Bonita if it wasn't for South Park.
I know I wouldn't.
So true....
Yeah I get that, thought was an Interesting enough story but was a risky move as not directly South Park. Thanks for letting me know
Well of course for most people yes. My grandparents would bring us there every time we went to Denver. And that was before South Park. South Park just reinforced the awesomeness.
As someone from Colorado, Casa Bonita is such a staple here. I totally understand their love and admiration for this restaurant! ❤ I enjoyed Casa Bonita before I ever watched South Park but now as a fan I love it even more!
I don't give a fuck about it even after watching the whole video
To see rich people spending their money on something hilarious and rebuilding a business better than before gives me hope. Thank you, Matt and Trey! :)
This of all the cool shit we would have if all rich people did shit like this for fun.
@SixAddams actually kind of blows my mind more people don't. Like either you're saving like half a billion for little grandchild Timmy to inherit and blow, or you could do something like try and revive an awesome business, maybe even start one from the ground up. And hey, if you do it right Timmy can still have a little for his fent cut pills
I don’t see them spending their money on this hilarious 🤷🏻♂️
@@FredoNavajas92 The hilarity comes from the restaurant being featured in South Park, then the creators of South Park buying the restaurant. Circle of life... :)
Preserving Denver history
I didn’t realize people thought it was going to be turned into a South-Park-themed restaurant. It seems like a weird conclusion to come to, since Matt and Trey talk about how much they loved this restaurant as children. If they made it a South Park restaurant, it really wouldn’t be the same restaurant anymore.
It would be better if it was a southpark theme park.
If they wanted a South Park restaurant, they would have made their own standalone restaurant. This was clearly them trying to save something dear to their childhoods and I think that's cool 👍
@quetzalpacheco I mean they made book fo Mormon and that was separate from South Park and also a hit
@@msthecommentator2863 I totally agree with you. I can’t imagine why anyone would be upset about this. I mean they are celebrities so I don’t really know them but they seem like very very decent guys. They made an entire episode about how much they loved this restaurant, who in their right mind thinks they are going to get rid of the sopapillas and blackbirds cave and the cliff divers? No way!!! they bought it to preserve it and because they just love it.
@@asssm89 it would not be better if it were themed after a show that hasnt been good since 2004
Fun fact: Casa Bonita had multiple "secret passageways" inside the restaurant. Some were hidden by fake walls or decorations. They were basically a way for employees to get around. My dad worked there in '82 and showed me some. It was fun knowing something about the place that not many knew about.
That's actually pretty cool!!!!!
The head chef being Mexican really shows how much Parker and Stone do care about doing things the right way. They make a silly show, sure, but they're still mature and reasonable people - that dude who tried to 'save' the restaurant definitely was gonna pull a Cartman when he bought that amusement park lmao
That guy will be in a south park episode by the end of everything
Mm that is irony
At least they care about authenticity
Oh how naive you are, there are Mexicans working in every type of restaurant from Chinese to Italian, there was a 110% chance that a Mexican guy would be the main guy in a Mexican restaurant.
Was the previous chef NOT mexican?
What Karen doesn’t realize is that South Park has fans across a huge age group. I’m in my 60’s and LOVE SOUTH PARK! It could only bring more people to Casa Bonita, IMO.
Mr Novick was lucky that his group of 'restaurateurs and creatives' weren't able to buy Casa Bonita. They would have been absolutely destroyed financially.just because you can buy something, doesn't mean you can afford to operate it

Smart as they can claim that on taxes. They are good business men

@@pelago_ definitely, makes me dig them even more. I've been a fan of theirs since high school, before South Park. Somehow one of my friends had come across the animation that started it all back in the old school AOL Internet days, and he played it for some of us in computer lab lol. I remember seeing the commercials on Comedy Central for the first South Park season like a year or so later, and it has remained one of my favorite shows ever since.

ya that dude was cringe for sure XD
So true!! 😂 esp that last part
I’m so glad it’s in Matt and Treys hands. They have the passion and money to afford to make CB great and I can’t wait to see what they do with it. It’s too bad they couldn’t also save the real life KFC that turned into a dispensary in LA that was in that episode, it closed down several years ago though. I am truly glad Casa Bonita could be saved though, it’s iconic and obviously has meant a lot to both fans of the show and people who grew up in and around Denver.

Born and raised local here in Colorado. The first time I went to Casa Bonita was when I was 5 years old. Been there so many times over the years. I was hoping to experience this place with my son who is now 3 years old and was worried when Covid hit that it would close forever. I was so damn happy when Matt and Trey bought it.
I went to Casa Bonita on a family vacation in 2001. No clue it was a thingy. Thought it was just a restaurant. I remember how the floors looked: this old - cosmo black, but warped from years of abuse, with little quarter gum-ball machines on top. The smell of the water. The atmosphere. The fake-rocks. Black Bart's Cave. Cliff-divers and a show every 15 minutes. Putting your order on a metal stick or turning a green sign red or something to symbol "more food plz." The whole place was a trip. I remember leaving and thinking it must be a franchise - it was so neat.
I think Matt and Trey have a lot of nostalgia for the place and money doesn't matter to them. Never has. They think it's funny they keep getting more.
We went to the new Casa Bonita last night and I didn’t get food poisoning. It was completely remodeled but faithful to the original.
The food was incredible, which is something nobody ever said about Casa Bonita.
Thanks Matt and Trey!
Did they really think Trey and Matt were gonna turn it into a South Park Land? They’re rich AF they would build their own SP Land! They showed love to the restaurant on the show and buying it and reinventing it to what they loved as kids is like the only thing I could imagine them doing. They’re not so up their own butts that they wanted to turn it into a restaurant dedicated to them and SP.
i actually think that would be cool as hell if it was heavily south park themed..At least give me a cardboard cut out of the boys by the cliff or something
It would probably be much cheaper to start from scratch instead of renovating an existing location if they wanted a SP themed restaurant. 3.1 mil for the purchase and another 15 mil for the "back of house" renovations mean this not some SP joke. The food will be a curious thing because some of the depictions look like Taco Bell quality food but they charge Chipotle money.
My best friend's dad worked construction there when it was built it '74. He was very proud of that fact and honesty it was pretty cool to know he took so much pride in his contribution to such an iconic place. I have many fond memories during the late 80s and 1990s. I am apparently the only person that loved the food. I remember when it cost $12 per adult and you could get a dive view based on luck. They had glow sticks that would last for months if you put in freezer in between. Im pretty sure they were radioactive or something as today's glow sticks are a joke in comparison.
I can't imagine how bad it was, Matt and Trey are amazing for pouring so much resources into something that in theory could fail. Even if it succeeds it's gonna take a long time to make $20M+ back
they probably dont care, they probably make enough money just making south park that it could fund casa bonita even if its a flop
Good thing they got that streaming wars money

Yeah, running a restaurant is much more work than most people think. Especially something like this. God damn, 15m alone in renovations.
They went from "we dont want South Park making our family restaurant into a running joke" to not wanting to talk about the massive amount of maintenance they neglected.
1. I cannot believe how big Trey’s daughter (who voices ike) has gotten!
2. That ending audibly made me laugh 😂

I grew up in Denver, CO and can confirm that the hype was real as a kid to go to Casa Bonita. It's the coolest restaurant I've ever been to even as an adult. I'm super happy Matt and Trey bought it and when it opens ima book the Cartman table. I hope they installed a grown up version of Blackbeards Cave, in the old one you had to be under like 14 or something to go in
Most old restaurants defer rennovations until the building is at best gutted if not completely razed. Casa Bonita likely got more liberties where a normal landlord would have lost their shit. A trick to handcuff a landlord is to make such modifications to the site that it is prohibitively expensive to get them out.
During the pandemic Cheesecake Factory used the fact that losing their business and converting the sites for other use was such an expense that they simply refused to pay rent at any of their restaurants.
And now they are all closing. Good riddance. Overly fatty food and overly priced.
@@Chris_yes cheesecake factory isnt closing
I know this is morbid, but then I see that restaurant pre-renovation I immediately think of the coconut grove fire especially knowing the previous owners ran the place into the ground and it took millions just to address safety issues

My family visited Denver when I was 2 or 3 years old. This would be around 1975 or 1976. For many years I had a vague memory of going to some dark but lit up subterranean cave with divers and a show. It wasn't until the South Park casa bonita episode that I realized we had eaten at Casa Bonita!
3:06 honestly, this guy seems like he would make Casa Bonita into his personal restaurant, make it even more worthy of Kitchen Nightmares, and drive it onto the ground. Also he's claiming Matt and Trey are gonna turn it into south park? Casa Bonita is literally only shown on south park as itself, why change it to be just south park?

Yeah, I think someone mentioned it would be like Cartman with Cartman land. But I think he would be more like one of those sociopathic owners who would push someone from the table they booked, because he feels like eating there.
this is a legendary move! definitely a bucket list destination I must visit
I've been a fan from the start, when I saw The Spirit of Christmas at Spike and Mike's before they got the Comedy Central contract. I love the fact that two best friends have created the funniest show in the world, and keep on building on their dreams. Kudos to these guys.
And every episode of South Park is watchable for free in europe.
I went there and I'm not even from Colorado. South Park was airing but they didn't even do the episode yet. It was on point how Cartman described it. Once in a life time experience especially if you're out of Colorado state.
This is dope , i love it when poor kids get to buy their childhood back, them investing to make it great again is just so wholesome
I don't think that people who grew up outside of Colorado can really understand just how beloved Casa Bonita is around here. Going there is like a fucking pilgrimage for kids who grow up here. It really is just like how it is portrayed in the show. Friendships are made or shattered over whether or not you choose someone to go with you for your birthday. You have to remember that up until fairly recently, there really wasn't that much to actually do in Colorado for kids. There's some pretty pathetic amusement parks in Denver, and one kick-ass waterpark that has a fairly short season, and then there's Casa Bonita.
Side Note: They also put a Casa Bonita DLC into The Fractured But Whole which pretty faithfully reproduces the restaurant. The funny thing is that they added jokes that sounded like tongue-in-cheek advertisements for the restaurant, but this was years before they even owned it.
Well, Matt and Trey can shamelessly place ads and products for Casa Bonita in every new season of South park, so they might actually get some of their money back. Restaurants are dangerous money pits, though.
I'm thankful that Matt and Trey have stepped up to save this icon. I'm also thankful for South Park for cutting through all the crap over the years.
Grew up going to Casa Bonita and watching South Park. This is one of the best things to ever happen to Denver
Holy hell, was the Karen Randy character inspired by the Save Casa Bonita guy? I could relate to floors so dirty that you assume they are dirt. I once got a temporary gig at a small restaurant, but it turned out the chef was leaving abruptly, and they decided to give me the job. My first week, I started a deep clean. The floor appeared to be a dirt floor, or maybe dirty concrete. I started picking at a corner, and found a perfectly good foodservice tile floor under about half an inch of grease, dirt and debris. I stayed in all night chiseling it up and scrubbing the tile. The owner was really confused when he came in the next day and suddenly there was an orange tile floor when before it looked like the ground next to a commercial grease disposal bin.

They could offer $50 an hour and workers would still complain about the lack of tips. Disguising. Trey and Matt need to see whats happening to Canlis right now and get out of the restaurant business before its too late
And still mess up orders. It's hard to teach taking pride in your work.
Matt and Trey could literally cure cancer tomorrow and I wouldn't be too surprised
2:52 .. looks like if this man from "save the casa bonita" get it it would be total end of casa bonita.
Or Matt & Trey would just buy it from him year later.
He could not afford to renovate whole building, he could not afford to pay employees the way M&S can.
He would not attract so many people like they do ..
Great insight video. Didn't even know about the fiasco involving the Save Casa Bonita weirdo, who I'm sure we're all glad did not have the money to purchase it!
That aside, the renovation hell shows that even if you have the money to purchase your dream restaurant, it's not something to take lightly. We're all rooting for Trey and Matt that this works out for them in the long run.
An open question for anyone who went to Casa Bonita before it closed. What was your reaction seeing the footage of all that neglect and hygiene hazards?
It literally makes no sense to me why they would change a single thing when it came to that restaurant that they grew up with. If anything, it helps the restaurant and helps the name because if it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t even knew that this was even a real thing. That’s a mansion with the type of money that they have they can actually bring good quality food and good service as well to buy paying their employees a very good wage.
the thing is, thanks to South Park, Casa Bonita is even known. like Harold and Kumar go to White Castle, another chain not known in the UK. they have the fans behind them, and the passion to make it work. and we all hope it does
this "Save Casa Bonita" weirdo acts like he's the only one who loves the place, but you can see that Trey and Matt love Casa Bonita too, they're just not obsessed to the degree he is, which i'd argue is a good thing, because that means that they can make changes for the good of the restaurant, while he would just end up letting it fall apart rather than change what made it fail to begin with.
Trey and Matt deserve casa Bonita straight up 👍👍👍👊👏

I agree that the location was being neglected I lived walking distance from the location in 2018 and I went once and never again because it was discussing both food and interior and that guy who went 300 times continuously still haha
Lol the food needs to come with a warning even in video footage
I can tell you right now that Casa Bonita would’ve gone to shit under the “Save Casa Bonita” guy. No chance in hell he had 15 million to fix the place up, let alone run the business.
The content of these videos are excellent, but they’re paced *way* too fast! So many great points and gags wiz by so quickly I barely have time to process them, and the sped-up voiceovers are even harder to register. Please slow things down and give the script room to breathe. Just as many people would watch a 12-minute video as they would a 10-minute video as long as the material is great (which it definitely is).
thanks that's really useful to know the intro is fast so can cram everything in but understand. I did actually slow this vid down compared to other vids. Appreciate kind words
I think it's fine 🤷🏻♀️ but I guess I just prefer ppl to get to the point with stuff like this. I hate long intros
I went to Casa Bonita in 1990, it was worth every bit of Cartman's sacrifice of Butters. I so love that episode.
Those fighting against the purchase by Parker and Stone are just seeking an easy payday....nothing more than opportunists who see money, and are trying to prey on wealthy investors who are emotionally invested in restoring their investment.
It's actually really gross. Save Casa Bonita was a scam from the start.
I went to Colorado 3 years ago and just driving away from the airport and looking out at the mountain range brought tears to my eyes. It is such a beautiful state. I can’t wait to go back and visit Casa Bonita!
After watching the documentary, they did this creepy looking fella a favor by buying it instead. If the Karen hair cut guy did buy it, no way would he have put the same effort they put into renovating it. He would’ve kept the food the same probably.
Imagine making it so big you can buy your childhood dream restaurant.
3:35 that is sort of how sales work lol. What a strange arguement.
I've visited Denver twice in my life. As a Southpark fan, I made it a point to drive into a bad part of town and go to Casa Bonita for dinner both times!! The restaurant was rundown, no waterfall running, short-staffed, my waiter barely spoke English but we really enjoyed our experiences because we were with family and we walked in the door excited and in good spirits!! Of course we all sang the "Casa Bonita" cartman song and walked around the restaurant doing our best cartman impressions....I am in agreement with Matt and Trey in that the memories and mood are the important things.
I'm sure whoever founded the place would be proud of all the memories and smiles made at their subpar restaurant!!!
Growing up this was a field trip attraction for elementary kids. Black barts cave was cool for a 10 year old but the food has always sucked.
Andrew Novick looks like Shemp from the 3 stooges with the personality of an old boot.
If the Casa Bonita guy had actually bought the place it would have soon closed forever.
They didn’t have anyone inspect the building before bidding 3.1 Million!? It’s a piece of crap, inside of a trashy old strip mall. They’ll never recoup 15 Million!!
Sure they will. Around my 300th visit.
I'm in Littleton, it's about 15 minutes north of me.
I haven't been in probably 20 years but I'm excited. 😂
Matt and Trey are national treasures! God bless them!
This makes me so happy. Here in Toronto we had a similar style family restuarant called Frankies Tomato. An italian all you can eat buffet with great decor making the inside feel like you where on a coblestone street in Italy somehwere, with fountains and musicians etc. It fell into bankruptcy dueing covid and never recovered. Was sold of and turned into a Monatanas or some shit. So many memories...😢
One of the stranger things about Andrew Novick (Save Casa Bonita guy). He bought stuff that supposedly belonged to JonBenet (no proof it was actually hers) then made a hour and a half "documentary" where he brags about owning a dead girls stuff then takes it to psychics who keep getting stuff wrong but he keeps defending them.
Nope doesn't sound like a PDF file.
The level of delusion from that guy is insane. If they were allowed to buy, Casa Bonita would no longer exist.
Guess he never used Ebay.
I was there in the mid 80s...I didn't get sick. I was amused. Good for a Burlington boy.
They should make the crazy guy in the video, a DLC boss lol.
As someone who only really got into South Park recently with the games, I was glad to find your channel! I love extra lore and facts about my favorite franchises. Had no idea this place was even still around.
Best part Mr. Karen, will celebrate his 301 Casa Bonita visit or get rejected.
That's kind of fuked up that 300 guy would do all this I'm almost 100% sure this would be one thing Trey and Matt wouldn't turn into a joke. I bet he was thinking he'd walk in and see south park all over the walls and what not.
Your coverage of this, is just.... Mmmmwwahhh! (Chef's kiss!)
haha thank you
So what’s next them buying the hotdog ( that cartman lived in for a season or 2 ) and putting it by casa Bonita ( on another video talking about “South Park creators own casa Bonita “ video somebody said that while it probably won’t happen ( then again people thought they would never buy casa Bonita sooooo it could theoretically happen )
Would be cool
I could totally see the legal battle between that weird 300 visits dude and the boys being an episode LMAO. Casa Bonita goes up for sale and Cartman tries to buy it but runs into that dude.
After everyone that has been parodied in South Park, it might be time for them to do the same thing to themselves. They joke about the Kyle getting his money back for watching BASKetball so an episode where they poke fun at themselves would be epic.
I grew up in CO. Oh, Cass Bonita, I miss you. My digestive tract, not so much.
