As someone who works in the medical field, I can't tell you how many things get denied. They are hoping if they make us fill out more paperwork or do extra work, we will just give up on getting the test, medication, therapy, etc. Insurance makes the most money when people don't use it so they make it as difficult as possible to get things approved. But likewise I understand the difference, I don’t know if they understood this would be a historic year on this level with a spotlight on Americans Health Insurance nor the bitter reality that people coming together to describe the horrors and lives lost because of this process. The process of needing “prior authorization” for a medication your doctor told them you urgently needed and then randomly denying help after following a scheduled treatment plan. The intensity of this- literally draining your savings for every appointment, needing to start over, having to crash course for a medication they may just pull this whole stunt again with. The sad truth is that I knew the punchline of this scene right as they entered the insurance company with their bright setting and uplifting attitude the first time. Because I've experienced his hell.
A friend went to a clinic in Mexico for bronchitis. Had an exam and received at the clinic, antibiotics, cough medicine and an inhaler. When he went to pay they said " it's free. You can leave a tip if you want" . He offered $5 and was told " that's too much" 😮 We in America have been brainwashed into thinking medical treatment should be expensive, but in reality it's not. It's the markup that's expensive, driven by greed. Some hospitals in the US charge $7 for an aspirin 😱
you were in Mexico, your chances of dying from something there are far greater, not to mention the medication is cheap because it's cheaply made, you are not even getting the same medication you would in the US.
That's not even a joke. My insurance wanted a prior authorization for one of my meds and the nurse at my physician's office who usually does these was out and the other nurses could not figure out how to work the fax machine (because they were too young, i.e. under 40). I asked them why not just email or some other electronic communication the insurance for it? They said because the insurance requires it to be faxed. They intentionally do that so it takes longer. I wouldn't be surprised if they were really still utilizing the rotatory phones.
I literally just went through this. I tore my ACL, doctor says I need an MRI to prove it's torn so I can get surgery, insurance says I need to do PT to make sure it's not just a muscle strain, doctor says that's what the MRI is for, doctor suggests it could also be an occult fracture which you NEED an MRI to check for before the bone heals improperly, insurance says fine, I get MRI, proof ACL is torn. Gotta love private healthcare.
I’ve been there. Tore my rotator cuff, knew right away it was severe and wouldn’t recover without surgery. Had to go through PT first in agony before eventually getting an MRI that showed the complete tear and only then did they do surgery which was a complete success. Although not every surgery is going to work out.

If you think private health care is bad, try public "health" care. Here in Canada they just suggest MAID for EVERYTHING.
That’s because the purpose of health insurance companies is to make money. It’s only confusing and frustrating to you because you think it’s about your health. Once you understand what they are doing to begin with it makes perfect sense. You don’t maximize profits by paying for everyone’s stuff no questions asked. Again, it’s not about getting you the proper care you need for your ankle. They are profit making machines not health care companies.
Looking at stuff like this makes me grateful for the fact that my hospital bill is €0.00 up front, just whatever I pay in my taxes. No worrying about a huge f---g bill when you are sick in a hospital bed.

It's accurate, especially where you have to keep going back to the doctor to be seen for the same thing you have been seen for. All they left out was what happens if you have insurance through work and the provider changes and the new company declined to cover your medication even after receiving a pre authorization. Then you call them and they tell you to get a pre authorization but then you tell them you did and they declined it. I hate the US medical health care system sometimes.
Incorporating the lithograph "Relativity" by M.C. Escher is genius. This is the picture of the healthcare system with all the stairs at the 3:40 mark. Even though two people can go the same direction on the stairs one will be ascending and the other descending. Perfectly captures the US healthcare system.
That was awesome! But they forgot a few things like: the $300 tube of ointment that you didn't even bring home but have to pay for; and the fact you will never know the total of how much anything is going to cost out-of-pocket until a few months after it's all done.
I'm glad this came out when it did!! I've been so down lately. I've been in the disability process for a few years, struggling to financially stay afloat. I've always had chronic health issues, but never thought I'd become disabled and I need more appointments now than ever. The disability process is a joke. Insurance a joke. Jumping through hoops after hoop to drag on for years. Needing referrals for one thing or another, getting denied by insurance one after the other and having to appeal them... I finally got a referral for my functionality tests. Insurance doesn't cover the one I need and it's $700. I'm in the process of seeing if local programs can help me cover it so I have a physical profile for my disability claims. Just ugh. I'm glad this came out during my stages of stress and grief, gave me one of the best laughs in a while!!
Even for someone like me who has lots of insurance and medical field backgrounds our healthcare system is a mess to go through. I'm glad I can get care at all but some of the specialists I need are very difficult to find let alone if they take insurance

Often times they do, but the insurance companies that they have to partner with impose rules on what deserves treatment and makes everything worse. If they don't word it just right, even if they write it is necessary, the insurance agency will deny it if they want. And since everybody has different insurance plans, they can only sign contracts with so many. So it screws patients AND healthcare professionals, only people who benefit are the insurance companies.
It's a system designed to extract as much money in terms of premiums, deductibles and copays, while paying out the least as possible in terms of claims. Its the obvious end result of applying capitalism to healthcare, get as much money as possible while paying for and doing the least possible
@bluecanine3374 no, patients, insurance and Healthcare provider all screw with eachother in every way possible. What happens when you don't get health insurance? The provider you trust so much will overcharge you 10x if they feel generous and kind.
This is entirely accurate to the American Healthcare system. Quick to taking money but slow at giving any to you. “The medical directors job is just to say no”
They were going to, but first Matt and Trey had to go to get a second opinion from a provider in network, then had to fill out forms, fax those forms, scan the forms, email the forms to the insurance then go back to doctor then go back to the specialist who talks to the insurance company who faxes the forms to the medical director in the Maldives and oh look, its been almost 30 years
I think Matt and Trey are moderate liberals now, but they used to have more of a libertarian streak. Perhaps they weren't too concerned about this sort of thing until now.
They had a more libertarian mindset when opinions on healthcare mattered. But as they got older they probably went through the system more which made them care more about the topic.
This montage could use the occasional overlay of calendar pages being torn off as months then years go by, Cartman is wearing the hospital gown through high school graduation, and they're still only one minute into the montage. I’ve been there. Tore my rotator cuff, knew right away it was severe and wouldn’t recover without surgery. Incorporating the lithograph "Relativity" by M.C. Escher is genius. This is the picture of the healthcare system with all the stairs at the 3:40 mark. Even though two people can go the same direction on the stairs one will be ascending and the other descending. Perfectly captures the US healthcare system.
God damned claims department is so accurate.

That was awesome! But they forgot a few things like: the $300 tube of ointment that you didn't even bring home but have to pay for; and the fact you will never know the total of how much anything is going to cost out-of-pocket until a few months after it's all done.
The most accurate video on the internet!..Which is why everyone's sympathy is out of network for the head of UHC.
0:45 this is painfully accurate to how a lot of these companies keep up with tech. for example most of the banking computer infrastructure in the states still rely on old mainframe computers that run COBOL and magnetic tape for data storage.
COBOL will be around long after you are deceased. Come to grips with that.
magnetic tapes are actually some of the best long term data storage systems
I was hit by a car two years ago with shoulder surgery afterwards. This clip is so accurate it actually started to upset me halfway through.
Speaking of getting upset because of accuracy....
Been married for 2 great years and 17 shitty ones. I was watching the episode with the Shake Weight and laughing my head off until the last 2 or 3 minutes, when I was reminded of how enjoyable the marriage could have been if she just did a few small things and held up her end of the deal.
A legit emotional response to a SP episode.
Fuck marriage.

So basically the US Healthcare system is just talking to a bunch of different healthcare professionals who don't want to give a straight answer
Yes.
Yeah but also fuck you and pay each of them for their time after they make you wait to see them
This isn’t even parody…. This is literally American Healthcare
Now we see the results of American health care
Watch out ceos 😂
The medical director’s job is to say No! 😂💀😂💀
I'm a primary care physician. This is the most accurate portrayal of American healthcare I've ever seen.
This is entirely accurate to the American Healthcare system. Quick to taking money but slow at giving any to you.
“The medical directors job is just to say no”
the thing I'm most surprised by is it took south park almost 30 years to get to the America healthcare system as a episode topic
They were going to, but first Matt and Trey had to go to get a second opinion from a provider in network, then had to fill out forms, fax those forms, scan the forms, email the forms to the insurance then go back to doctor then go back to the specialist who talks to the insurance company who faxes the forms to the medical director in the Maldives and oh look, its been almost 30 years
@@greenyax ah yeah ok that makes sense for south park good thing it not a real world medical thing other wise that just be crazy
@@greenyax brave souls lmao
I think Matt and Trey are moderate liberals now, but they used to have more of a libertarian streak. Perhaps they weren't too concerned about this sort of thing until now.
They had a more libertarian mindset when opinions on healthcare mattered. But as they got older they probably went through the system more which made them care more about the topic.
I love how they made it so cute that Kyle is helping Cartman
Edit: I just watched it and now im completely sure Kyman is Canon
Kyle was epic in this entire episode!

@@Howlingburd19 Im going to edit this comment in a few hours. I still didnt watched the special but im going to soon. IM SO EXCITEDDDD
😂now I understand why Americans don’t feel bad about the ceo
Typewriter, line-feed printer, rotary phone. Even an acoustic coupler modem. Seems like that guys got all the mod cons .
And the schoolroom overhead projector to show transperancies.
This montage could use the occasional overlay of calendar pages being torn off as months then years go by, Cartman is wearing the hospital gown through high school graduation, and they're still only one minute into the montage. They finally get approved when hes 60 and the insurance guy or hospital director is like "Well why DIDNT you just send this all in to us to begin with?"
Then he gets a surgery in 3 days but dies of a nosocomial (hospital acquired) MRSA infection because his doctors confused a used tissue for medical gauze.
United Healthcare insurance CEO got whacked. lol
😂😂😂😂😂
Who here is watching after that CEO got shot?
😂😂😂
👋
Kyle referring to Cartman as "my friend" and genuinely acting like he genuinely cares about his well being is both cursed and wholesome at the same time
Kyle does hate Cartman but Kyle is too much of a caring and compassionate person to let Cartman get hurt for no reason.
This is the same kid who sent Cartman to Somalia hoping he would die.
@@portalmanHUN i know, that's why it's cursed
He’s genuinely super awesome in this special, I swear! Love his determination in helping Eric :)
@@Yushe_Well definitely not caring nor compassionate, nobody on this show is unless it's convenient for them 😂. I think Butters is the only exception really
I can't even remember the last time Kyle and Eric had such a sincere, genuine moment together that didn't end up getting reversed as a punchline at the end. I did cry a bit at the end. Just a bit.
When I worked for the government, there was never any issue with my insurance. I would show which policy I had, I would be told exactly what my share of the cost would be and I got cared for. It’s like the insurance companies treat you differently based on who they are comfortable screwing with.
Got treated good because insurance lobby the government.Third parties are always the issue it be better if hospitals and doctors posted their pricing and they would have price competition and you instead of paying insurance you put in a health savings account.
"I got told what my share of the costs would be". You say that like it's a good thing. It could and should be so much better than that.
Yes this is true. I worked for an insurance company and we had to provide "Additional concierge services" to our UC (University of California, Stanford and Vaden) Members while the Medicare supplementals, medi-Cal and regular employer plans got subpar experiences and services and it was accepted smh (This included employees of the insurance company too, our plans sucked and took 30% of our pay!!!!!!) . The reason is because the plans with additional services were high paying clients and basically wrote their own plans and said "we will pay you x amount for x services and if you disagree we will contract with another insurance company" The job sucked and Yes, I ended up quitting when they started to approve semaglutides for weightloss but my diabetic type 1 and 2 clients were struggling for a prescription. F insurance and their scheming ways!
