6 Rules to Guide my Early Retirement in Thailand! - vlog 24

  • I share the 6 promises I made myself when I decided to sell everything I own and move to Pattaya, Thailand. I don't really talk about it in the video, but I felt a little guilty for making this dream of mine come true. Part of the reason I made these "self-promises" was in a way... me just making a deal with myself. "Yeah Pete, I'll let you do this crazy thing but you have to make us some assurances that you aren't just going to go party your life away or become a depressed couch potato over there... deal?"
    In hindsight, I'm really glad I agreed with myself to all of this! LOL It's been more than worth it!

      It’s such a great activity. It’s minimal impact on your body but helps strengthen it, you get to discover all these new places, you can connect with your neighbors, it’s wonderful for listening to music or podcasts and it’s great for getting fresh air when it’s not burning season.

    Retired at 62 on the beach in the South of France. I think your promises to yourself are great. I promised myself I would live fast and die young.😮
    I have an alarm goes off at 9.15am every day in Spring and Summer to get me to walk up and down the nude beach then go to our shared pool.
    It's almost time to leave the pool right now. We've lived here since we were 28 👍👍. ⛱️

    Retirement and moving abroad are two big life changes. I’m glad I did them separately. I retired at 55. One of the first things I did was enroll at a gym with a personal trainer. That was great and those lessons serve me well today. I definitely got healthier and stronger. Unfortunately Covid lockdowns we’re a setback so I have some work to do. I like being alone but I resolved to do something social every week. I joined a book club, pursued cooking, took classes, and continued salsa dancing. I even taught several science classes over several years. My 60th birthday in Thailand remains my all time best birthday. I moved to Thailand in 2017. I waited 10 months before taking language classes but that was great. Besides the practicality of it I enjoy the intellectual linguistic aspect of it. I’ve lived here 6 years now mostly in Bangkok, just built a house in Isaan and am living the life.

    • @peteonretreat2023
      @peteonretreat2023  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That all sounds amazing (except the lockdown and issues because of it). My plan is to basically not set roots for the next 5-10 years. I want to travel and see where to spend the following 20 years. The longer I’m here though the more I can see this being the place (not Pratumnak but somewhere in Thailand).
      I’m also really enjoying the linguistic side of learning thai. A lot of things have begun to click this week and it’s making me more excited for everything coming up.
      Thanks for sharing your story a bit here 🙏🏼

    I kind of have the same goal - move to Thailand and get in far better shape, guess no motivated to get in shape in my home town. I was in Bangkok and patts last month and my step counter was far higher than it ever is at home in California, I think I did 12miles walking one day in Bangkok.

    Great video Pete.
    Thanks for sharing with us your 6 promises that you made to yourself and --> more importantly your ability to respect yourself by fulfilling your promises.
    I guess I am currently realizing your 6th promise - as I find myself back in Europe going back to work after being retired for 1 year - of which 6 months were in Jomtien - where I started to get bored. Many of my endeavours that I tried to realize in Jomtien failed - as I allowed other ex-pats to rain on my parade. Also, I did not manage to make a good circle of friends like you did.
    So, I hope that after I finish this temporary "return to work" and return to retirement in Thailand that I can find a sense of purpose in Thailand or perhaps somewhere else in S.E. Asia.

    Hi Pete! I’m enjoying watching your videos immensely.
    I’m interested to learn more about how you met new friends in Pattaya.
    One of my fears is being isolated when I get there.

    • @peteonretreat2023
      @peteonretreat2023  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’m glad you’re enjoying my videos! I think that fear of feeling isolated is a good one to have. I think finding social groups around common interests is the best place to start. Playing golf, tennis or racketball… there’s some chess clubs, divers, car or bike enthusiasts, 2 board game shops…
      My next Video will probably be focused a lot on making friends. My core group has Dungeons and Dragons in common and now I’m making some new friends at Thai school. I’m not incredibly social which works against me some but it also means my social means are low.
      I’m glad you asked, it’s giving me some thoughts about the next video! 🙏🏼

    Another awesome video! What is that tree with all the stuff hanging on it including a figure? It makes me think it's a shrine. What's the story? love the guy with the amp behind him on a cart, walking down the sidewalk playing guitar, with the flashing lights. Gotta go now. Have to take a walk.

    • @peteonretreat2023
      @peteonretreat2023  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, it’s some type of shrine but I’m not sure the significance really. It appears to be like a spirit house or “San Phra Phum”
      Those protect your house from wayward spirits so maybe it protects this area of the beach? The fabric bands however aren’t a part of the San Phra Phum tradition so I really don’t know.

    I'm considering the move. I have made promises to myself that are very similar. I learn Thai quickly and decided that I would make an effort to attend a school to learn some high Thai and maybe even attempt reading and writing. I'm a walker and also decided that I would make it part of my routine there (worried about the heat though). Same with the gym. Same with limiting the drinking and herbal refreshment. I'm also from LA and also retired relatively young. I really admire a person who has the discipline to be self-improving anywhere they live.

    • @peteonretreat2023
      @peteonretreat2023  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like we have a bunch in common… (I’m on a 2 month toke break currently as I head towards my 50th) I wish I could say I was on this path of self improvement back home… I most certainly wasn’t though.
      The heat is definitely a thing… probably the 4th biggest challenge for me here. It’s almost the longest day of the year now but if I get out for my morning walk at 6 it’s usually a very nice time. My evening walks are often the same. There’s more breezes here on the Cosy Beach side of Pratumnak Hill than most places in Pattaya.

    Fasting is a good way to stay healthy. A 36 hour fast once a week plus a 7 day fast once a year goes a long way to keeping your body clean of unhealthy over load.
    Of course this is in conjunction of eating mostly well and exercise. But giving your digestive system a break like this is very beneficial.
    Always treat yourself occasionally. I still eat an ice cream every evening except on my fast days. I also drink a coffee every morning and have the occasional pizza and burger etc and also a couple of Thai meals a week. I'm 187cm tall and weight around 78kg at 52yo. You can tell I'm old in the face but my body looks as fit as someone half my age

      @@peteonretreat2023 nice. You should try pushing that little bit further to 36 as that's the recommended weekly time frame although 28 to 32 is still half decent. I do my 36s by checking my last eating time in the evening and then just eat in 2 mornings time. Works well

      I’m currently on a tourist visa, struck out on my third attempt for an education visa and will be applying for my retirement visa in august.
      Don’t need a visa to rent an apartment at all. January is peak season so it won’t be as cheap as it could be but you should have no problem finding an apartment for a month. Airbnb might be a good source as most agents try to get 6 months minimum.

    Hey Pete - great video. I've watched a number of your videos and found them very informative and useful. My wife and I intend to retire to Thailand. I have a couple of questions I hope you can answer. First one is about water. I understand that the tap water is not drinkable.... is it safe to use tap water for things like brushing your teeth and washing vegetables or do you need to use bottled water for that? Second question is about food... have you had any issues with food poisoning? Do you have any tips to avoid getting sick from food in Thailand?

    • @peteonretreat2023
      @peteonretreat2023  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s pretty much correct about the water but from my understanding the water itself in Pattaya is clean, it’s the pipes that are an issue. Supposedly, the water is fine in new buildings but I’m not sure. Some foreigners drink the tap water here without any problems after living here a while.
      I wash all my veggies in tap water and have had zero issues. There’s water stations/machines all over and I refill 2 6 liter bottles of water from them every few days. Those 12 liters cost me about 25 cents (9 baht). There’s 3 machines pretty much right outside my condo.
      I’m still brushing my teeth with bottled water but have been questioning if it’s necessary lately.
      I’ve had zero issues with food poisoning and it doesn’t seem that common at all. I think it may even be more common in the states. The food here has never gotten me sick and has hardly messed with my stomach (as often as it had back home). The food in Laos however… that messed with me for a few days the first time I went there.

    • @martypoll
      @martypoll ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve had the same experience as Pete. Even Thais don’t drink the water. However, bottled water costs practically nothing. You get used to it. Food poisoning happens more often here than the US but it is not all the frequent. The street food is not the problem. For me it is restaurant food that is the worst offender. Generally though you have nothing to worry about. I’ve lived in Thailand 6 years now.

    • @peteonretreat2023
      @peteonretreat2023  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was going to go to school anyway but many in my class are doing their education visas through the school. After 3 weeks of class I talked to the school but… Jomtien isn’t giving education visas for people 50 and over now so I struck out.
      The course is for as long as you want to take it. I initially signed up for 20 hours (5 weeks) but have now signed up for an additional 6 months.
      My friend is intermediate level and signs up for a single month here or there. At the point, the class is more organic and works mostly with vocabulary and student driven questions.

    Hi Pete - Question for you. You’ve mentioned a few times that this retirement plan will be 10 years living abroad. Any idea what you plan on doing after that? The US is way way expensive and it would be tough coming back and having to work again at age 60. I’m planning on Thailand retirement as well, but that would be forever because the states would price me out. I’d be interested in knowing your thoughts, thanks.

    • @peteonretreat2023
      @peteonretreat2023  ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess it’s been awhile since I covered the idea for after this decade of life…
      My 10-12 years of travel is funded solely from selling my house in the states. After that I have my retirement fund from work and social security that I’ll get when I’m 59 1/2 and 62ish respectively.
      Part of the idea of this adventure is to see if there’s somewhere I want to spend the rest of my life. I’m open to returning to the states but unsure if I will. It’s all pretty open but I have a feeling I may move back just for a few years before really settling down long term somewhere abroad.
      I probably have enough in my retirement to live full time back in the states once I have access to it without penalties as long as I’m not living in a crazy expensive city. I just don’t think that’ll be my path.

      @@peteonretreat2023 Thanks, Pete! You and I think similarly. I want to sell my house as well, then get over there. I'd say 2-3 years from now, or sooner if it gets really bad here in CA (which it seems to be doing). I'll be in Pattaya the week of Thanksgiving, would love to buy you some Leos!

    Jesus, dude. You and I are so similar, ha. Got in better shape at the age of 50 than I was at 40 .. I walk a TON .. stretching to strengthen my core .. about the same age (I'm 53) .. strong southern Cali base .. I used to drink a lot, now 1 craft beer will give me a buzz .. agreed about learning the languages (respect of culture, opens doors, and I know un piquito Spanish too) .. on and on. We even wear similar shades, ha. Unfortunately, I don't play any instruments, but wish I did and have plenty of friends who do. Anyway, interesting. Hope we get to meet up some day. Peace.

      @@peteonretreat2023 Not sure just yet. End of summer or maybe not for another 6 months or so. My dad is my best bud and he's getting on in years, so I'm in a little bit of a no-mans land of wanting to spend time with him, but also explore. I'll def keep tabs of you, though, chime in with comments and for sure let you know if I'm heading over.

    Hey Pete😀. I'll be joining you in 18 days, can you tell me which language school you use please? Is it online, classroom based, or 1-1 please? I'll hit you up in a month or so once I've found my feet, buy you a beer and a water 😅

      The countdown continues, congrats! I go to an in person school called Easy ABC Language School. There’s about 20 students in the class.
      I’ll never say no to a water! 😅

      I said one in my big milestone video… not sure when the next time will be. My next video was going to be about school some but I might go a different way. I start to film tomorrow morning.
