Total absence of that most vital ingredient for a person to grow and thrive on.....purpose ! Beaches, bars and girls ain't no purpose. ex military for a long time, got psych issues as a result. the only time i have fun now is when im on holidays in SEA, you dont feel judged there anywhere near as much as you do in the west. i dont work and haven't for years so having to try and tell friends that i haven't really done anything for the last x months kicks you in the guts every time. over there nobody cares what you do or dont do for work, you dont get the looks from people that you get in the west. there doesn't feel like there is a blue print about what you should and shouldn't be doing with your life at that time in it. going to move over to SEA once the pups pass otherwise if i dont do something then it wont end well.
Bro I am right there with you, psych issues after my military service and havent felt any joy in life for years. I went to SEA and it was like the depression and grey had been lifted. I just need to make the move but I am scared. I am only 45 and fear how everything will be in 10-15 years
I’m the small percentage but I was clinically depressed in the uk and I cried to my mum the 1st week I moved here because of how happy ‘I could feel’ cause I didn’t think I could feel anymore
I lived on a tiny island far off of Koh Chang. One British guy was splashing in the gorgeous blue water by the white sand surrounded by palm trees. He stood there looking like a wet cat and said "I ought to be happy but I'm misreable." I pointed out that everything around us was just trees, earth, and water, and don't we have all those things back home? Yes, but it doesn't make us happy there, why would it make us happy here? He thought about it and agreed it's the people in your life that matter most, not your surroundings.
This was such a good video man. I was born and raised in Thailand myself, and now I live and study in the UK. Some of the points you bring up really hit close to home and I agree 100% fully with your views on depression in Thailand as I now work in healthcare myself. I would love to buy you a coffee when I’m next down in Thailand next month. Keep up the good work
I quit drinking at 40 strictly because I didn't enjoy it any more and wanted better sleep. Watching these Pattaya channels I'm amazed that someone hasn't cornered the market on catering to health conscious tourists and retirees. It would require a different business model, maybe one in which lady drinks are fresh squeezed juice and wheat grass instead of booze. I've never been there, but when I retire in a few years I might like to come try it out. But one thing I won't do is start boozing again. There has to be a better way, a healthier way for all parties involved.
Pattaya can be great fun - but when you blur fantasy with reality that’s when the problems start. I’ve spent a lot of time travelling across Asia and considering spending a lot more time in Thailand next year. No matter where you are you have to a purpose in life - i run distance, ride motorbikes and have dabbled in Muay Thai. That’s how i keep sane.
@@Backup218 That's why most people who outdoor exercise do so in the early morning or at dusk. And here's a tip for you - it's easy to find a gym which is cool at any time of the day
I went down the spiral living in Thailand drinking far too much. It is very important to live life like you do in a real 9-5 with proper worries. Enjoy the small things in Thailand
I have met so many immigrants that live there that have become alcoholics because basically they are bored and didn’t think retirement was going to be like that. They immigrate to Thailand, Vietnam or the Philippines because they cannot afford to retire in their home countries but, the “dream” retirement becomes a nightmare. Being on a fixed income becomes a challenge and the only way to make the days shorter are to drink all the time
Perhaps if they stopped drinking they could afford to buy an e-reader, or take up any one of a thousand low cost activities like chess, exercise, learning a language or learn to play a musical instrument. Anybody who spends their life drinking to 'make the days shorter' is basically just going through the motions of living at that point.
Just came across your content today. Great video! Important topic. I think it needs to be spoken about more. I think a lot of people coming over to Pattaya, do it for similar reasons and a lot of us are susceptable to falling into the same trap.
Great segment. I especially liked when you contrasted the expats on a budget to the big spenders on their two-week vacations. Alcohol: after a layoff, I went to therapy. The therapist told me that the best thing I could do to avoid depression was quit drinking. I thought, duh, and kept drinking. But eventually I quit and you know, she was 100% right. Not to mention you save a lot of time and money and are the same person all the time.
When I visited Thailand, I eventually stop recording, as you say, because I realised that I was there on holiday to enjoy myself and not to shoot a movie. Only after that did I really start enjoying it.
Thank you for your honesty. I spent time in Thailand one year 1999 and a few times then. Yeah, I fell in love, unfortunately was unrequited. I stayed busy traveling and scuba diving. Broken hearts heal over time. Still, I have many fond memories. Such a beautiful country. That was before Thailand became a tourist / security trap...much like everywhere else post 2001.
Yep. Cebu City used to be a sleepy yet graceful provincial capital until around middle 90's. Cows used to graze in the center of Fuente Osmena "rotunda" but now you risk life and limb just trying to get in there. More cars, more people, more congestion and that's the end of Paradise as you knew it. Boils down to a struggle for survival in the madding crowd. C'est la vie. (But it still beats living in Joisey!)
glad to see your videos are being recommended, and youre getting some traction. keep up the good work, and keep me posted on those plans! ive just come back from patong, and im itching to find a way to stay in thailand in the future
Ups and downs are a normal part of life. But, when being down in the dumps, and it's severe and long lasting, it's time to seek help. Whatever one does, try to be good to yourself. Eat and drink properly. Get enough exercise and manage stress as much as possible. It's amazing how seemingly insurmountable problems are "solved away" by a positive attitude - generally emerging from focusing on health first, with family and financial priorities a close 2nd. Whatever one does, punishing oneself with destructive behavior never ends well. If all else fails, try to walk, swim, or whatever - with friends. This Mac TV sounds like a good idea.
