Hi Neil and Sarah hope you enjoy Bangkok its a fascinating city with so many options of countries surrounding plus in - country travel, if you get a chance Hua Hin is a gorgeous spot south of Bangkok you can get there by train....Hope you get some good earned rest after the long haul to get there....I have a question given you are making your money work for you while you travel what amount that you have budgeted each year comes from your you tube channel? I had never though of doing something like this however even though I have been given the option to take my job with me when I move to Mexico I am not actually sure I want too, or neither do I have to however, would like a wee income maker aside from investments..

      Hi Dawn!
Thank you for the question, I think we will put this into the Q&A video, so we will hold off the answer to there. Teaser alert.... it's the worst paying work either of us have ever done, including our Paper Rounds when we were 13 years old :-)

My question is " would you go stir crazy or get bored without having the TH-cam channel to work on every day ". I begin my year long slow travel journey next February in Thailand actually. I have debated on the idea of a TH-cam channel but it seems that " editing videos " is literally torture. Any truth to that? Does TH-cam give you a sense of purpose? Did you need a sense of purpose? Is it good that it is interconnected with your travel as opposed to an online job teaching English as a second language or being a copywriter etc ?

With Roth IRA, the money you are contributing has already been taxed. At any time for any reason, you can withdraw your contributions tax-free and penalty-free. Additionally, any earnings on investments can also be withdrawn tax-free and penalty-free, Not sure how much to contribute, I'm still at a crossroads deciding if to liquidate my $338k stock portfolio.

Consider buying stocks when the economy is not doing well, like during a recession. It could be a chance to buy them at a lower price and sell later when prices go up. Just keep in mind, this isn't financial advice, but sometimes it's better than keeping a lot of cash.

For this reason, It's important to have a solid support structure (financial consultant) to guide you through especially in asset picking. I operate with (REGINA LOUISE COLLARO) an investment advisor who partners with a licensed wealth management firm. For the record, the experience has been the best for my finance. She is quite popular for her services so you might have heard of her.

Interesting video and really nice people. Without kids we have been travelling from age thirty on holidays in between work. Now we are both retired. What are your medical insurance costs per annum? Why a ten year window for travel and do you have money to live after that time? Do you have a residence if you get tired of travel or have health issues? We will always have a home base in an apartment after we sell the house. Stay safe and I look forward to watching the rest of your library!

Can totally relate to the haircut in Turkey - sent hubby off for a trim, he came back about 4hrs later like a new man. They cut and coloured his hair, burnt off the fuzzy ear hair and waxed his nasal hair (who knew there was so much up there, god only knows how that conversation came about) but he just kept smiling and nodding as they progressively kept doing more. In addition to the haircut he had a shave with a blade and a manicure. The man looked like David Beckham when he came back, that was 8yrs ago and I think its about time he went for another makeover lol ...

The office will call you when it arrives and you will need to show your passport and tracking number (provided by the sender) to obtain your mail. @@2GoRoam Be careful, some couriers do not deliver to PO Boxes and the like. I bought a P.O. Box when I first moved to Thailand because of the hit & miss of having things delivered to a Thai home address that was in English. I had some notarized documents shipped over by my Brother and gave him the English version of the address. Two weeks later my Brother called as the package was returned as undeliverable. So I bought the P.O. Box in the main post office in Chiang Mai and gave him that address since it was much easier to understand in English ... when he went to the post office to mail it they told him they can not courier packages to a P.O. Box (I think they can deliver via regular mail which can take a month or more.) So I sent him a photo of the Thai address written in Thai and asked him to glue it to the package ... that arrived in about a week.
Thailand Internet: You're in heaven for Internet while your staying in Thailand. Cheap, very fast, and reliable (living outside of Chiang Mai, which is way up North and in the jungle mountains more or less, and I pay about 1600 Baht ($46USD) for 1GB/500Mb home fiber Internet, Television service over fiber, and an unlimited cellphone service with unlimited data rated for 6Mbs, but it's 5G and I easily get 20Mbs and sometimes up to 60Mbs ... I really don't need that level so if I wanted to use a 200Mbs home service and cellphone service rated at 2bs I could probably have that and the Television service for less than $20 USD.
57% cost difference ... I'm find that hard to believe, although my comparison is between Toronto, Canada and Chiang Mai Thailand.
      * Rent went from $2000 cad per month for a small 2 bedroom apartment to about $375 cad per month (my Thai wife already had two homes, one big one in the mountains outside the city, about 1 hour drive, and a smaller one in the city, she sold the big one and build a bigger house, 2 bedrooms and 2 baths, about a 15 minute drive to downtown Chiang Mai.
*Food for 2 went from $800 /mth to $400/mth (and this is eating out most days in Thailand, vs grocery shopping every weekend and only eatingout once a week when we went grocery shopping.)
      * gas costs about the same but Thialand is not spread as much as cities in Canada, so usually my cost is about 1/2, so instead of $60 per fillup every 2 weeks, it's about $30 per fill up every 2 weeks.
      * Internet is about 1/2 the price for 5 times the speed (plus I get cell phone and TV included which saves about $100/mth and I get better service included.) ...
      * Utilities are cheap I believe but it's hard to tell as water, electricity and property tax are all part of the rent where here I have to pay for water (~$5/mth) electricity (averages about $60/mth and I use AC when I feel like it, which is a lot for at least 6 months of the year) garbage 20 baht / month (or around $0.75 cad) and property taxes are $0 (any property under 1 rai (about 1/2 an acre) has not property taxes (my wife has about 10 rais around the province and she paid some redlicious tax of maybe $15 for the year, which to be fair was about 1/2 the usual cost because of a Covid discount.)
So my monthly expenses went from probably $3,100 cad (just basic rent, utilities, food & transportation) to about $890 (if I were still renting the 2 bedroom 2 bathroom house I rented when I first moved here!) Since we bought a new home (about $70K cad all in after furniture and upgrades like solar yard lights, higher fencing, security cameras, sheds, landscaping) and car outright with no loans, our actual expenses are closer to $500 cad/mth ... the only thing missing right now is health insurance (have to look into that soon, but for the most part, besides emergencies, health care out of pocket is pretty cheap here ... Canada it used to be 'free', so I'm guessing that's going to cost another $300 to $400 per month when I decide to get it ... so that will bring it back to around the $800 to $900 mark again.
That means I am paying about 30% of what I paid in Canada ... If I stayed in Canada I could live like a hermit in a small bachelors apartment and seldom if ever going out, staying home and getting all my entertainment from whatever Interent I could afford ... in Thialand I have a home, lots of money left over after my bills are paid, and can afford to go on a week or so vacation pretty much anywhere in South East Asia every month!
It's not for everyone (language, culture, weather, etc) and there are requirements you need to meet to get the proper long term visa, but it's not too onerous for most western Boomers who have worked all their lives and have at least a little bit of savings (if you qualify for the full Canada Pension and OAS, and can scrap up 800,000 Baht to hold in a Thai bank account (~$30,000 cad or you can forgo the 800,000 baht if you can show you have a pension with which you can transfer $2400 cad into Thailand every month) and can control your drinking and womanizing, you are pretty much all set to live a comfortable life (or in my case, since I am already married to a Thai national, 400,000 baht in a Thai bank, or a pension income of 40,000 baht ($1500 cad) per month)

You two look great with no sleep. Another clever video! Way to go. How long do you plan to travel in Asia? Any plans to explore Africa? I noticed you didn't list traveling out of a suitcase as a pitfall. Would consider it as a pro or con? On one had you have simplified your life to live out of one suitcase. The other side is you have to carry all you have. I imagine now you could get by with a carry-on thinking how hot and humid it will be. Looking forward to next week. Thanks for the informative, relevant, and entertaining content.

      Hey Kimberly,
Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment!
I just typed the longest reply ever to this comment and TH-cam didn't save it.... ARGH!!!!!!
Suitcases are certainly a PRO for us, just the right size and if I didn't have to carry so much tech which is heavy, I would switch to just a 40l backpack personally (although Sarah likes having a case option). For us now it is more about making marginal improvements in what we carry and they seem to give us the biggest benefit. I have struggled finding a laptop bag for carry on that is actually working for me, I have tried many. I have picked up something inexpensive here in Bangkok and hey presto! I think I have cracked it... so very happy with that.
Also, I worked in South Africa for some time so would love to explore further, Africa is high on our list!
      Best regards,

The market crash prediction has been going for months now, imagine if you've invested heavily then. The truth is no one actually knows if the crash is gonna happen. some said it will happen immediately after the election, hello we're done with the election now. You just have to invest smartly . Hi Sarah and Neil. New subscriber here from Canada. Love your content. I am of the same mindset. I have been slow travelling for 40 years and love that people are finally spreading their travel money around instead of just in the traditional spots. I recently bought a home in Mexico and will be moving there within the next year. I have a unique work schedule where I work 28 days in a row with 14 days off and the plan is to commute to Mexico for the next few years until I retire full time. Working in Canada and commuting to Mexico, for now, will enable me to live within my means and still be able to travel when I retire full time. Perhaps, someday, we will be in the same part of the world. If so, the first round is on me. Happy travels.

Granted when I had one I was locked into one location for work and I got my service through the country I was in - so I'm not even sure what today's technology for satphones is like in 2022. I was able to with my parents even though I was in a developing nation halfway around the world and the voice quality was amazing.

You can finish any simple polite phrase with "Ka" for ladies and "Kup/Krup" for men for example "Sa-wa-dee" is hello/good day and "Sa-wa-dee Ka/Kup" makes it more polite

It would have been helpful to me if you had titled this video “the real truth about retiring to a life of slow travel” rather than retiring abroad. Retiring abroad means something different to me - it means moving to another country where you intend to stay.

I totally agree... I sold my home and built a home in Ghana, West Africa and couldn't be happier!.. Traveling abroad from the continent of Africa is much cheaper than traveling from the US..and with my home base being in West Africa, I can fly back to the States much or as often as I choose. So technically I have 2 homes, a shared home in the US and my base home in Africa!

Agree - the title and the content are not the same. Watched 1 minute and checked the comments to confirm they really were going to talk about “slow travel” versus retiring abroad.

I used to own a backpackers hostel. Being broke and unable to buy a house, when the prices have all risen is no fun at the end of travelling. I had one customer, who had all his money with Bernie Madoff. He would have got in lots of travelling, before the Ponzi scheme collapsed and Madoff was jailed. I stayed in contact with many of my guests over a very long period. The end outcomes were often not ideal.

Always excited to meet other retirees and travellers! We are semi retired and kinda slow travellers… we stay all summer in Britain. I’m interested that you’re British. Most of my fellow TH-camr travelling friends are American. I’m excited to watch your videos and see your adventures!
Where in Britain are you from?
Happy Travels! Cheers XX Dara (and Ian)

Hi Guys..... wish I'd picked up on your blog 2 weeks ago... I been doing the same as you since 2010.. I'm a digital nomad so rumble around all sort of places..... I'm in BKK now if you need any extra help let me know. Been in and out of Thailand for years, know lots of places to stay and lovely locations at a tiny price, can sort out phones, wifi, medical supplies where to go what to see and pay no more than locals...... enjoy the slow touring, its great when you get used to it... I am a little older but still in my 50's your best getting a banking app on your phone so you can pay for things off it and not worry so much about cards all the time

@@2GoRoam I'm here until July, though I'm visiting Phuket next week, more than happy to pass on a few tips on making life easier... I get a portable wifi if you can at one of the main Phone service providers like True .. they are 4G or 5G computable and you can change the sim card in them when you travel to different countries.. Ive got 3... you just have to buy a contract ( short term where every you base yourself) and for about $60 USD you have your own wifi to travel around with.

Your video was posted in May 2022 but the info is like it was May 2019. We would like some details on how you got into Thailand or wherever you are. What did you have to do to get there. What are the hoops and how did you navigate that? More practical and detailed information would be more useful than the 20,000 foot perspective of 2019.

Moving out of the US is a good move. I’ve lived here for over 35 yrs and now I have to think about the healthcare situation as the US is in a mess. Especially if the GOP kill off Medicare. So establishing a new base in my original homeland the UK will solve that problem but I’m not going to abandon the states in the long term forever. It’s still a great place to start a business. Travel has its allure and there’s so much to experience in other countries.

Welcome to the country that I call home, now. I am sure you will have a wonderful time, and you will be bowled over by the hospitality of the Thai people. I retired here, last year, from the Uk and love it! You have done the right thing in retiring as young as you did - I wish I had retired earlier, rather than grinding my life away in the rat race.

I'm a fan of yours, since a bit before you went to Mexico. I'm planning in investing by purchasing condos and/or townhouses in the Yucatan peninsula, mainly Cancun, Tulum, Puerto Morelos and so. This to put them to rent in AIRBNB. Could you give me some tips on what I should look into and what I should make available to succeed. Thank you again for your wise tips. I've traveled around the world too but not that slow. I've got to sit and think how many countries I've been already. I'll tell you later.

Are you BONKERS? UK to Thailand is only 13 hours. I live in Bangkok, but come from Nottingham. I lived in China for 6 years and arrived with 10 words/phrases. Thank You in Thai is "Cop Koon Cap" for a man and Cop Koon Ka for a female. The word Cap or Ka is added on the end of everything you say as it means - "polite". Just subscribed. Cheers.

GeoArbitrage! Now I know there's a name for it! I know what you mean about feeling as though I'm taking advantage. I don't know how I'd cope living in one of those top 20 countries again. But even in countries like Serbia or Mexico, I find that my budget adapts. Ie in London I'd be living on scotch eggs from the BP Gara (LOL) but in Mexico I may splash out more, so ultimately, after spending a long time in a place I don't recognise a huge difference!
Revolut, I had one sent to Mexico once, so much better than UK banks! It's strange I haven't had that email and everything is still working fine!
Enjoy Thailand! Great to see Asia opening up again, I miss it!

    • @2GoRoam
      @2GoRoam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey David,
HAHA you are learning so much from us newbies :-)
We do think you are limiting yourself somewhat with your comment about scotch eggs from the BP.... you know that to get a proper hot meal full of nutrients, you can get Pop Tarts from the BP too?
Interesting, so it seems you would spend around the same in Mexico than you would the UK but in Mexico your Peso will just go a loooooooooooong way further.
That is strange you didn't get that from Revolut, we both got that around Feb I think (and we applied separately), we are going to wait til we are in a location for a good amount of time and then order a new Revolut at that time.
All the best as ever David!
