- In this we show how, through our trials and experimenting, the GEM avocado is the winner for taking high temps, warm dry winds and as I conclude, is the best avocado tree for hot areas.

Another great video. Thanks so much. Gem Avocados rock the hot weather.
Thanks for watching Mike👍
Almost calling the Gem avocado the king of avocado.😆😆 Hardyness, heat tolerant and nice vigorous branching new growths. Overall great avocado to grow on the backyard. Good producer similar to the Gwen
Yes
Gem + Carmen perfect combo
I think so
what does carmen taste like..is it A or B type? and is it heat tolerant?@@TheElsinoreGardener
I've noticed the same thing, the GEM tolerates heat far better than other varieties.
I'm zone 9B here in Fairfield, CA. I live close to the air base and it can also get VERY windy. We do get the delta breeze but that doesn't help during triple digit days. My other avocado trees will droop and burn whereas the GEM doesn't even look phased.
I have two GEM in the ground and this year is the first year I'm expecting them to hold a couple dozen avocados. It'll be interesting to see how many, if at all, drop from the inevitable heat wave.
Wow.. Lake Elsinore? Just found your channel, I’m in Winchester. 🌳 Thanks for the tips!
If your looking to plant there, go with the GEM
Nice video . Just picked up gem from fallbrook nursery.
Hope you enjoy it!
Thanks for the valuable informations about GEM avocado heat tolerant it's really appreciate it because I live in an area where the temperature can go over 100f hor two months i will try the gem and sea see how it will take it
Good luck. Soil is the most important
I live in San Diego and also noticed this with my Gem and Reed.
Both those are doing good here to
We need to get GEMS here in AZ.. This would be perfect.
IDK, its a special kind of hot out there..... lol
If you’re looking for Gem in California check out Hernandez Nursery in Fresno.i just picked up a Gem & a sharwil.they have a lot to choose from.
Great trees
I also have Gem and Carmen up in Northern California, like you I am more impressed with Gem's overall performance, it seems to take to inland growing like a fish to water.
Yup, great trees the Gem
@@TheElsinoreGardener Has your Carmen produced?
Where did you find your GEM avocado trees? They are hard to find in nurseries!
What about frost? We rarely get a quick snap of high 20s in the morning here in Arizona but that heat tolerance would be great.
@@humzilla707 Where I am we get a lot of heat sometimes up to 116. Gem, Queen and Mexican race varieties do well in the heat. The heat sensitive ones are by the house and get some shade during the afternoon and are happy.
I bought a wurtz avocado from Home Depot about a year ago , I have it on a big pot and where I live it’s hitting about 100 degrees now and I got 1 burnt leaf, so it’s not too bad 😬
Good to know
I'm jealous of those avo trees but dang that brown turkey needs some good grafts on it.
That damn fig feeds every varmint in the neighborhood.
@@TheElsinoreGardener lol well at least it's only brown turkey then
Hi, any tips in making GEM wood sign? I want to make similar sign for my avocado trees
I got them off Etsy
my in ground gem avocado leaves keep turning brown and crispy. At first i thought it might be the heat, but after your video it might not be the case. there is still new growth, are eventually starting to brown as well. what is the difference between underwater or over watered leaves? im just scare of over watering because that kills plants way faster than underwatering.
If the soil drains, water it
Hey Gary…Question for you.
What causes the brown leaf tips you have on your trees?
That’s just the old leaves dying and being replaced by new growth. Keep them and put them back under the trees for mulch
Thanks Gary….
Another question…
If I’m up potting avocado trees. Can I do it now? I live in La Mirada. It’s been about 90/93 degrees. Or should I wait? And should I put them back in full sun?
👍🥑🍺
Thanks Ben
Hi what rootstock are your gems I have 1 La verne gem that got some sun burn
Not sure, I do make sure they have plenty of mulch and water
When do you fertilize? I live in Menifee and see very limited growth on mine
Every other month with fertilizer
How much water would you say you feed your gems daily? What kind of water system do you use to feed?
I use 5 gallons every 2 or 3 days in the heat for the ones in containers. In ground, I water every other day for a few minutes
I'm in Valle Vista California east of Hemet and it's a hot area here and I just planted 40 gem avocado trees. It does get a bit cold out here in winter. How do your gems do in winter?
No issues yet (2 years). But you get a little colder out there than I do.
@@TheElsinoreGardener yeah that's what I'm concerned about. Gonna cover the bottom of the trees with palm frawns to keep them warm. I heard from the grapefruit farmers that's what they did
I grow GEM in Gavilan hills ca temps have dropped down to 28 with no problems just put lots of mulch and that will help both in the summer and winter helps insulate the roots
Does the GEM avocado require another avocado plant for pollination? Or could it self-pollinate with just 1 plant? Thanks!
Most avocados don’t need a different tree to set fruit. The Gem is a great tree
@@TheElsinoreGardener Thanks for sharing!
Hello, any chance I can buy some gem scion? I live in NorCal and its impossible to get the GEM out here.
Sorry I don’t like cutting these trees when they are pushing growth. Look for a chapter of the California rare fruit growers up by you.
What nursery did you buy your gem avocado from?
Maddock nursery in Fallbrook ca.
What month is best to try and find G.E.M.s down in Fallbrook?
Check out this video when I went there. th-cam.com/video/ZNP-RRH4xQI/w-d-xo.html
I visited yesterday and Eli's farm stand (who sells subtropica nursery trees) has a few gems.
Other places to call are Maddock (usually has a lot of gems), and Atkins
@@csskkai where’s subtropics farm stand? Back at the FarmersMarket off Front St. Temecula?
Just got off the phone with Maddock Ranch Nursery in Fallbrook they will have GEM trees available in 5 weeks.
@@831AVO thank you
If live in the tropic, want to grow only 1 dwarf avocado tree. Which one will be better. Wurtz or GEM? Many Thanks.
Hope to get your response soon. Thank you =)
Go with a Gem if you can get them there.
@@TheElsinoreGardener Thanks. But does GEM has Flower A & Flower B like little Cado and is it a dwarf variety? Saw some said that it's not truely a dwarf one.
Do you know a good place to buy a GEM avocado tree in so cal? I live in the Central Valley and Gems aren’t sold anywhere in the valley!
Maddock nursery growing fields in Fallbrook has them a lot. Call ahead
@@TheElsinoreGardener how much did u pay
Do you have any idea of your soils pH? Thanks 🙏
No
is hass avocado as heat tolerant as gem and reed?where i live the average temp in summer gets as hot as 43 celsius and it can spike up to 46 somtimes and its very humid at nights @@TheElsinoreGardener
Can’t find any in Bay Area, CA. Know any nurseries that ship GEM?
I’m sure there are some
@Stealther I emailed Fourwind Growers they will have GEM available to ship in 2023. In Richmond I would check with Golden Gate Palms last I checked (father's day) they had GEMs in #15
Hi was wondering if you’ve ever had trouble with root rot ? I have watched many many of your videos but not seen anything about that. Am using Gary top pot right now and really wld like to save this young bacon/avocado. Thanks. Maybe I’ll try the gem ?
With top pot I have never had any rot issues. Just make sure the container you put the tree in has good drainage.
try to use cinamon powder or slices of aloevera gel in the base of the pot to avoid root rot..also ensure proper drainage..you can add perlites etc
So have you given up on your Sir Prize? I grafted GEM as the top leader on ours.
No, it’s not fruiting this year, I’ll cut it back in the fall
04:00 GEM Avocado
Ok
Can Gem avocado tolerate cold weather in Vegas?
It’s a good avocado. It gets into the high 20’s here sometimes in the winter, so I’d try it
Why is it so hard to find Gem Avocado trees for sale? It seems like they are being restricted from being sold.
Maddock nursery in Fallbrook has had them in quantity in the past. Call them and see if they have some now.
I have 3 brokaw gems for sale
@@houseofbluepitbullslongbea2288 How much and where can I purchase? Are you in Long Beach?
