    I've seen GEM avocados popping up at places like Costco and Trader Joes in San Diego recently. They are marketed as Hass but you can tell by the appearance with the gold speckles and the pointy seed that they are actually GEM. The quality is variable when buying them in the store. I recently bought a few GEM trees so that I can grow them in my backyard and have more control over the quality of the fruit. Suptropica in Fallbrook, CA sells GEM trees starting around $30. They offer avocado trees grafted on Zutano seedling or commercial clonal rootstock such as DUSA.

    Thank you for the video. As one of the largest Avocado growers in California I really appreciate you sharing a positive experience. GEM is an amazing addition to the Avocado experience. I would invite everyone to ask their retailers to source it.

    Agree, our first GEM was just as tasty as our Hass, but on a "better" tree, and last year I topped our Sir Prize at 6 feet, and grafted GEM as the central leader, to help alleviate alternate bearing...so far so good, it took and is now becoming the leader. Thx for all the videos.

      Good idea with the Sir Prize. I’m thinking of just stumping it

    Thank you for the great information. I bought a Gem up sized to 15 gal, and it's being temperamental. Will try avocadoor. Sounds great.

      Don’t over fertilize it like everyone’s first inclination is to do. Maybe once a month hit it with a little fish fertilizer with its watering and you should be fine.

    Sometimes you can contact a grower and arrange for them to graft special ones for you. Epicenter Avocados in Northern CA, (Santa Cruz), is grafting about 6 different varieties for me. Note that I contacted them in the summer, so they hadn’t started the new seedlings yet.

    Local in Murrieta. Where is all the good spots out here for soil and avocado trees?

      I would go down to the nurseries in Fallbrook since you are close and check out their selections. As for soil, I like Top Pot from Laguna Hills nursery. If you can't get there, make your own and mix it with your native soil to get the new trees you plant onto a mound or raised bed if you soil is bad.

    Can the Gem remain in a pot and still produce fruit, or does it have to eventually be planted in the ground?

    • @TheElsinoreGardener
      @TheElsinoreGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can keep a gem in a large pot for three or four years, but they will always do better in the ground or in the ground with a raised bed around it depending on your soil type.

    Avocado's don't grow true to seed due to extreme diversification. You'll still get an Avoado from that, but it's like having a lottery if you'll get a quality that's either plain, basic, flavorless, watery, normal, amazing, tasty, better, or exact like the mother tree; with probabilities geting from high to lower in that scale.
