Love this! I do it basically the same way, but I start them in their own little pots in a zip lock baggie. This way I don’t have to mess with untangle their fragile roots from one another! :)

This is interesting . I’ll try this way next time.I have a bunch of leafs I’m propagating right now. I stick the leafs in small tiny plastic cups and put these little pots inside one of those clamshells plastic containers they sell strawberries in. I figured those containers are like mini greenhouses. I’m intrigued that you didn’t water the leaves for such a long time!
In the sealed container the water doesn't evaporate and soil moisture stays very consistent so that the young roots don't accidentally dry out and you lose the cutting.
Great video! When I propagate my african violets I use the ziploc method but I only can fit two 4in. pots at a time. Also Erika, you can cut the leaves in half and make two plants.
I've been on the look out for a variegated one for a while just don't see them where I live. Don't know if they would ship well if I ordered online. Yours is beautiful.
I have ordered quite a few times from The Violet Barn. They shipped great. Never had any problems. They have a great selection including variegated!

That variegation is gorgeous! The time I propagated mine I was lazy and just put the leaves straight in the pot, so I wouldn't have to transplant them, but where I live the humidity isn't very low, ao I got away with not having to use a container 🙂

Just a tip I don’t water my African Violet on the top of the plant I water underneath the plant but your plants look great.
I don't water mine on top either except for their monthly flush. All other waterings are water soluble dilluted fertilizer.
I usually don’t either, but I wanted to pack the soil down. I also don’t think it’s a problem to water from above as long as you don’t wet the leaves. I’m still gonna keep watering from the bottom tho 😉
@@ErikaLodes I've even read if you get "warm water" on leaves it'll be ok 🤔 I don't want to chance it tho. I use warm/tepid water "only" when watering.

Great video I like that it’s easy this is my first time propitiating an African violet. Ended up with root rot. I had repotted her in a miracle gro potting mix that retains more moisture, BIG MISTAKE 😩😩 now I have to be repotting all my plants because the mix had a mud like tendency 😩😩 I hope my propagations come out great. I love African violets. What is pure light or pure life that you mentioned that can be mixed with the miracle gro, after the propagation?
It is a bit hard to hear if you aren't familiar with soil mix components. She suggested to use "perlite" which is added to increase drainage and make your soil 'fluffy' which violets enjoy. They like to be moist and humid but hate cloggy, muddy soil mix. Some people also use charcoal or a mix of both.
edit-if you look at the mix she is using, the white pieces are the perlite.

This was so interesting! Thank you for sharing! I just rescued three plants (plain green ones) that weren’t wanted. They are under grow lights as I don’t have a place with natural sunlight to put them. Do you have any advice for getting them to flower?

So far, I have three African Violets because I saw your old video on how to take care of them and had to have one. It’s so much fun propagating them, especially when you see the baby leaves pop up. I never seen a variegated one in person, did you buy them in store or online? I don’t remember if you featured this in a hauls video in the past. It’s gorgeous!
Great job! I've plucked and stuck into dirt. They grew dozens of leaves. Also left some in water,the leaves formed under water

can you propagate the leaf petiole without the actual leaf?
This video was very good! I did the same thing from one leaf, but I went ahead and planted it in a pot with dirt so I wouldn't have to transplant. What I did is fit a sandwich size baggie over the pot. It stayed moist the entire time the baggie was on it and I could watch the progress without disturbing it. I have an old violet that needs to be transplanted and it's looking sad. It's daughter plant is huge and luscious with white flowers all over it. I started it over a year ago and have just started a new one a couple months ago. I'd like to know how long you keep the original plant when it starts looking really sad. LOL. I just hate throwing them out... It's got four little blooms so why do I want to get rid of it? But it really is ugly besides the blooms 😂. Also when the violet starts creating a tight crown in the middle, is it time to start a new one? Someone had mentioned that a violet loses its continuity after about a year or two and you throw it out. What is your opinion on that? Sorry for the long post!
I hope you haven't thrown out the mother plant yet? Poor girl! African violets can live virtually indefinitely, many well longer than 20 years with only normal care. Mumma probably just needs some nice fertiliser and she'll pick up again. Choose a specific AV fertiliser, or for better information and support, there are African Violet growers clubs in or near most cities, and most will also have a FB page where they will be happy to answer your questions.
You can also remove the older leaves from the stem to propagate more, then replant Mumma with her crown at soil level and she'll be good to go. Some people "decapitate" their AVs when they get 'tall', so they cut off that growth crown and replant it. There are a lot of videos of this, and if you simply search something like "refresh old African violet" you should see many ways to do this.
I'd NEVER throw out a violet, especially not one as young as a year or two! Whoever told you this is very misguided. Perhaps they want you to buy more?
You can start a new one anytime by removing any of the lower leaves. The tight crown is just fast new growth. In time those leaves become lower leaves. African violets grow upward from the centre.
Good luck, and be patient. Violets grow very strongly and last many many years. There are times when they don't look their best, but I promise you, unless there is a disease, they spring back with more beautiful blooms.
When your new plant get flowers??
When I bought myself a violet plant in May it had flowers until they fallen off. The leaves are growing beautifully right now but I’m wondering when will she be growing flowers again?
They bloom pretty often! Maybe in a couple of months (or less) more flowers will show up. If they’re super happy they bloom more often. It’s also year round which is nice to have color even in the darker months ☺️

My propagations always die. Do you open the lids to let air in and if so for how long and how often?
Sometimes I’ll open them a crack & just leave them open like that. Other times I’ll just not open them at all. Try having them open a crack all the time to see if that helps

Welp...I have mine in direct sun 🌞 outside and it went from white to pink. Go figure 🤔
Hmm maybe it’s just a lot of light makes it pink? I know a lot of sun makes white variegation pink too on some plants like vsoh. But I just feel like my grow lights aren’t as strong as a south facing window
