Great video! im new to all this laptop stuff. I noticed the max TGP for this model is 100w for that 4060 but I see you are drawing over 100w in the gaming tests here. Is there some sort of boosting that the GPU does, and if so, what is the true max TGP for this model? because it just says 100w on the lenovo site
Please answer this - In the max performance mode what is the CPU package power of the 7840HS in this laptop when running Cinebench R23 multicore and what is the score achieved for 1 multicore loop.
Thanks for the detailed review. I've just bought this laptop and couldn't agree more about its design. The single-hinge screen definitely sets it apart from other Legion 5 models. The entire aesthetic, with its smooth, refined design, is just really very nice.

@@jayway6411 they will be about the same. The amd has a smaller battery but is more efficient. The intel has a bigger battery but is much less efficient.
Thanks man, I was looking for someone actually reviewing this machine. Great review. I'd say not having usb4 is quite a big price cutting, but at least you get hdmi 2.1 which for some reason, not many laptops include. I have some weird feeling that it might be cutting power on GPU based on temp. It would be good if you showed GPU frequencies too. Because, you know, its hard to believe GPU drawing 100w, using full potential and still sitting below 75c. If I'm wrong, then I will just order this right now. I don't mind fan noise because when I'm gaming I'm using headphones.
Notebookcheck tested the Legion Slim 5 16", the CPU max load was 82W, GPU 60W. The top surface max temperature 40c, bottom 42c. Elitebook 845 with 7840U at 25W had top 45c, bottom 50c. If i set Legion Slim 5 CPU power limit down from 82W to 20'sh or something W, how much more silent the Legion would be in Cinebench? Should i buy the Legion with 800-900 g extra bulk, compared to 14" ThinkPad / Elitebook / Firefly?
Let’s just say all the games run very very well. It won’t be out before that, but the trend is the same across all games. Balanced mode csn keep the noise down a lot and still performs. The performance mode option really makes the gpu and perform exceptionally well (but at the expense of noise). Overall bang for the buck the gaming performance is incredible.

Hey, great video! Probably gonna pick this one as my next laptop. Just one suggestion, when I was watching your video with headphone, your voice (in the first person view) primarily came from my left side (same another videos of yours), which is little bit annoying. I always test with the back raised yeah. Just throw it in balance mode. Overall though temps aren’t bad at all on this laptop. The cpu and gpu run pretty darned cool. Heck the ROG ally is able to cool this same cpu with its tiny little fans
Bought this 4 days ago for 1300 💵. RTX4060. I am pretty exited to check how this performs. May be yours is the first video on this model on TH-cam. Kudos.
@@Sabakoe737 that depends on resolution. You aren’t going to be able to max the game at 1600p with everything cranked. If you are reasonable with settings/resorption you could get stellar performance though
I prefered this over the Legion 5 Pro due to the IGP. The 780m can handle practically everything on its own except for heavy workloads or gaming. Therefor I only use the igp 90% of the time. The 610m however in the 7745hx needs help quite often. The 7745hx doesn't have any advantage in mobile mode, only when plugged in, can it provide more performance. In every other scenario where you need less power, the slim seems to be the better choice. I am hoping to finetune the CPU + iGpu is finetuneable enough to be a standalone system and the dgpu will only be necessary for gaming. Which seems to be the case.
The 780m obliterates the 610m in demanding tasks yeah. Both are fine for just day to day desktop use for sure, however the 780M is capable of doing AAA gaming and other demanding tasks at a reasonable settings
@@TechGuyBeau As a web developer I know how to bring the 610m to its knees in daily use scenarios. Why didn't AMD didn't give the 7745hx 4 CUs, could be such a well balanced APU for non gaming scenarios.

I have a question. For the ram slots is it just two slots? I know this laptop comes with 8gb + 8gb ram. Is there an additional ram slot that I can add a new ram or if I want to upgrade I need to remove both rams and let's say install 16gb + 16gb to make 32gb? Thanks
Hello, thanks for the video. Are you doing anything extra to keep the laptop cooler? Like a thermal pad? Those are some great temps. I was worried that this model, as it is slim, it would run hotter but that ain't the case here right?
If I may ask does the laptop support UBS-C power delivery? I'm interested to see how well it performs when only using a type-C cable since I don't wanna carry the power brick. Thanks!
Hi bro . Thank you for good review What is the cpu temperature in the game in balance and performance mode? Is the temperature of 90 degrees in the game harmful to the CPU?
@TechGuyBeau I have a problem with this laptop. After 1 day of use, where I installed KINGSTON KC 3000 2 TB as the main disk, Windows 10 started restarting my laptop with an error message and - after the restart - with the message: Start PXE over IPv4. The BIOS no longer recognizes this disk. Now sometimes she sees him, sometimes she doesn't. It loads Windows, but after 15-40 minutes it restarts the laptop and doesn't see the disk again (it only sees the factory 512 GB). You wrote that you tested it with a 4 TB drive. Can you help?
Kinda sounds like a bad drive. You can try updating your bios as well Any reason why you downgraded to windows 10? 11 is designed for this laptop and will have proper drivers unlike 10
would you happen to know anything about the BIOS limiting the UMA frame buffer setting to 2GB and if it will get updated? For my slim 5, I noticed the only options for UMA Frame Buffer are 512MB, 1GB, and 2GB, and upon checking HWInfo each of these settings does in fact cap the iGPU Vram to that number.
what would you choose the legion 5 pro with 7745hx or the legion 5 slim 13700h,the rest of the specs are the same,i live in a hotter area so the amd temps are worrying me,and as far as i know 7745hx cant be undervolted,is there any reliable way of reducing the temps without a huge hit to performance on the hx and does the intel run cooler, thanks for the review, love the format
the 7745hx in the legion 5 was somewhat dissapointing in terms of temps. It would be fine in a legion 7 chassis (vapour chamber). The 13700h might run a bit cooler, although its a weaker CPU in real world use (not that it would matter). If temps matter a lot, jump up to the Legion 7 pro. They have incredibly well designed cooling (see my video on the 13900hx/4090 model)

Nice review, thanks! Not sure if these come with dual m.2 slots in the UK. I'm thinking about getting one of these to use as a Linux workstation (not for gaming). Do you know if (in Windows) it's possible to turn off the dGPU and still attach a second monitor via the USB-C ports or HDMI?
@@TechGuyBeau Are you 100% certain about this? Great video! im new to all this laptop stuff. I noticed the max TGP for this model is 100w for that 4060 but I see you are drawing over 100w in the gaming tests here. Is there some sort of boosting that the GPU does, and if so, what is the true max TGP for this model? because it just says 100w on the lenovo site
Maybe it uses 15 W more than usual due to Dynamic Boost. But these GPUs go up to 100W because of the voltage limit.
Nice review. I want to know whats the color of the Slim 5 here, is it Stormy Grey or Misty Grey? Thanks
Please answer this - In the max performance mode what is the CPU package power of the 7840HS in this laptop when running Cinebench R23 multicore and what is the score achieved for 1 multicore loop.
Does this come with the Intel wifi card or the Mediatek one? In Canada I mean. If it does come with the Mediatek card, I hope it's removeable
Was thinking about buying this version as it is about 100$ cheaper than intel, thanks for such a detailed review!
I had 2 questions. Did u get it? Also is the intel version better? Or is AMD better
@@jesusjimenez6755 yes I did get the AMD version. It's much better than the intel one and overall the laptop is incredible.
I mean intel is slightly better but quite expensive and will get better battery life on the amd version
I came from Reddit, I’m the guy who asked for the links. Would you recommend this for uni or the 5 pro?
Thanks for the detailed review. I've just bought this laptop and couldn't agree more about its design. The single-hinge screen definitely sets it apart from other Legion 5 models. The entire aesthetic, with its smooth, refined design, is just really very nice.
How’s battery life been for normal
Task?
Great to be honest
@@TechGuyBeau I’m currently tryna decide between this laptop, and the legion slim 7i with the 4070, battery life is important to me tho, would you say this machine last longer than the slim 7s i9?
@@jayway6411 they will be about the same. The amd has a smaller battery but is more efficient. The intel has a bigger battery but is much less efficient.
the new Legion looks really sleek
They are definitely refined
Can you do the review of the dock you have on the table? Looks interesting...
Bought this on impulse for some game dev, I'm super curious!
The cpu is very cool and the cooling is overkill. It runs loud but cool
Great video thank you
Cheers man great review! Praying for that games test video soon before the current slim 5deal expires lol. You may have sold me already
Fellow canadian here! is there a big difference between ryzen 5 7640hs vs ryzen 7 7840hs, 4050 vs 4060 gpu? Looking for a futureproof setup. Also will there be a better black friday deals for this?
there is a big jump from 4050 to 4060. the CPU are more comparable.
if you want legs, id avoid a 4050.
In Netherlands, it's costs €1030 for 4060 with 500 nits 240mhz display. Did you get anything this black friday?
I've seen on their specification pdf that they have a 500 nits display, though I couldn't find a sku with it on their American website, so it might be available in other regions
Could be like the pro 5 amd. I ordered the highest sku on the website labelled with 300 and got 500. Probably just site design oversite. Not sure about this model though
@@TechGuyBeaueah, that might be the case
this model does have a 500 nits but only available in select countries and you know, no US model have one
Hey, great video! Probably gonna pick this one as my next laptop. Just one suggestion, when I was watching your video with headphone, your voice (in the first person view) primarily came from my left side (same another videos of yours), which is little bit annoying. Perhaps it is a recording issue ? I dunno anything about audio recording. But, hey, I still watched all of it :)
Strange. Microphone might have been acting up. I’ll need to check my mic and video settings
I don't know why, but last years and this years lower vents (little squares cut out) on the vents just look bad to me...
Im getting 4060 for €1030 with 250hz and 500 nits dispaly, 4070 with 400 nits 165 hz display for 1300. Which one do you recommend? 4060 looks killer deal
Last lenovo i had was the Legion Y540 with the rtx 2060 6gb
How sound with Dolby Access in market ... @ 24bit-48Khz with custom eq, and surround ? sounds be much better
Have you tried temps with the laptop raised up for better airflow? in the performance mode if it could be quieter :D like on a laptop stand
I always test with the back raised yeah. Just throw it in balance mode. Overall though temps aren’t bad at all on this laptop. The cpu and gpu run pretty darned cool. Heck the ROG ally is able to cool this same cpu with its tiny little fans
Those temperatures are crazy low 😮
Bought this 4 days ago for 1300 💵. RTX4060. I am pretty exited to check how this performs. May be yours is the first video on this model on TH-cam. Kudos.
I’m not a big channel, so I always try to be first. Before the gigantic LTTs and such get a review out. enjoy the laptop :)
Can it handle flight simulator 2020
@@Sabakoe737 for sure
@@TechGuyBeau on max settings? And all adons?
Hi, great review! There is not much about this laptop out there. What is battery life on regular use, browsing etc.?
Do you know if it supports the new 48GB memory modules, so 96Gb in total? 7840HS does support, but what abot BIOS?
in my region both the intel and amd versions cost the same, which one would you recommend and do you think this machine is capable of cooling an i7 13700h properly?
7840hs is a much better cpu. So that model of the rest is the same
@@TechGuyBeau ok, thanks so much.
Hey there! good review,
Whick would you recommend? Slim 5 RTX 4070 vs Slim 7 RTX 4060? Rest specs the same (1600p display, ram and storage)
Slim 7 if the price is the same
Thanks for your review Tech Guy Beau, you are the only one who made this with the AMD variant of the Legion Slim 5, I wanted to ask you, could you please do a benchmark with different games? I would like to see the differences on gaming between this variant and the Intel one, thanks in advance!
I have a gaming video coming before too long. My plate is super full with videos but it’ll be here soonish lol
I have a question. For the ram slots is it just two slots? I know this laptop comes with 8gb + 8gb ram. Is there an additional ram slot that I can add a new ram or if I want to upgrade I need to remove both rams and let's say install 16gb + 16gb to make 32gb? Thanks
Two Ram slots. Mine had 8 + 8. But you can put 16+16 or even 32+32
@@TechGuyBeau thank you.
Hello, thanks for the video. Are you doing anything extra to keep the laptop cooler? Like a thermal pad? Those are some great temps. I was worried that this model, as it is slim, it would run hotter but that ain't the case here right?
No this one runs cool. It’s not not really slim. The fans will get noisy if need be but they won’t get hot
Thanks for the answer. May I ask another question? Are the fans running when surfing the web or idling?
@@NachoGrassi no. It only gets noisy when doing AAA gaming. The 7840HS cpu is very efficient. It’s totally quiet during normal use
If I may ask does the laptop support UBS-C power delivery? I'm interested to see how well it performs when only using a type-C cable since I don't wanna carry the power brick. Thanks!
Yes it does, up to 140 watts too.
Tanks.
Does the keyboard have rgb?
Hi bro . Thank you for good review
What is the cpu temperature in the game in balance and performance mode?
Is the temperature of 90 degrees in the game harmful to the CPU?
90 is fine. The cpu will throttle if it needs to. But it doesn’t get that hot, especially on balanced
@@TechGuyBeau thank you bro
2:19 That was anxiety inducing
great review! a curiosity, does the camera support Windows hello ?
Not on this one that I have
no legion models support windows hello, only legion slim 7 and pro 7 have fingerprint scanner
You can try updating your bios as well
Any reason why you downgraded to windows 10? 11 is designed for this laptop and will have proper drivers unlike 10
@@TechGuyBeau The bios is up to date, and Windows 10 is because several programs I use do not like Win11, and I also prefer Win10
Is this laptop compatible with oculus meta link ? For also pcvr games? Thanks
would you happen to know anything about the BIOS limiting the UMA frame buffer setting to 2GB and if it will get updated? For my slim 5, I noticed the only options for UMA Frame Buffer are 512MB, 1GB, and 2GB, and upon checking HWInfo each of these settings does in fact cap the iGPU Vram to that number.
Any info about that? I have seen other computers with 32GB option for iGPU.
what would you choose the legion 5 pro with 7745hx or the legion 5 slim 13700h,the rest of the specs are the same,i live in a hotter area so the amd temps are worrying me,and as far as i know 7745hx cant be undervolted,is there any reliable way of reducing the temps without a huge hit to performance on the hx and does the intel run cooler, thanks for the review, love the format
the 7745hx in the legion 5 was somewhat dissapointing in terms of temps. It would be fine in a legion 7 chassis (vapour chamber).
The 13700h might run a bit cooler, although its a weaker CPU in real world use (not that it would matter).
If temps matter a lot, jump up to the Legion 7 pro. They have incredibly well designed cooling (see my video on the 13900hx/4090 model)
you can turn of cpu turbo boost
@@hsuyaager8557 how big is the cpu temp drop and how big is the performance drop with the cpu turbo boost off, thanks for your reply

@@realnesslay what are the price differences and specs of what you are eying ?
Also the maximum memory for this laptop is 32gb according to Lenovo. Mm can you kindly confirm if this is really the case?
The weird communication thingy is lenovo did tell this laptop "could" be delivered from factory with 32gb ram, but not the max supported ram. I asked the same thing on reddit and the previous version could even held 64gb of ram
As @agumon1605 says, it def supports 64gb
Screen is 350 nit gsync. This laptop without the RGB keyboard just white backlight is $899 at Microcenter as of 12-23. Unbelievable! Picking up one tomorrow. You cannot find a better deal on a gaming laptop. How do they do it?
No idea on this model. Maybe they are just wanting to break even to bring in new buyers tbh. They can’t be making much money in these slim 5
Yes you can still us an external display on iGPU.
@@TechGuyBeau Nice one, thanks!!
@@TechGuyBeau Are you 100% certain about this? I've read several posts on Reddit claiming the video output ports (including the USB-C ports) are hardwired to the Nvidia GPU, meaning the Nvidia GPU needs to be powered on if you want to use an external monitor. Have you tried powering off the Nvidia GPU and then seeing if an external monitor still works?
@@MnemonicCarrier Hey, did you find answer for this question? I'm in the same boat, I'm planning using it on linux and external monitor and I don't want dGPU to handle all the easy tasks if I plug monitor
@@davitchkheidze670 Unfortunately, I don't have an answer ☹They're on special at the moment too, I'm so tempted. I've also been eyeballing the ThinkPad T16 gen 1 AMD (which has soldered everything, but doesn't have a dGPU).
Can you please tell me if the bottom buttons of the touchpad left and right work?
I have win11, the touchpad works, only the left right buttons do not physically work with gestures
The left and right click? They work fine yes
Has anyone with this laptop expeienced screen hanging due to pressure pressed towards the plastic hardcase in the chassis of the laptop?
Great review. What’s weird is it looks like the Slim 5i (Gen 8) is actually slim and a much lighter colour.
From what I understand the 4050 model of both is thinner (amd and intel) I guess the needed the extra cooling space on the 4060 model
@@TechGuyBeau oh interesting!! I really wanted the slimmer design and the darker (AMD) colour. Happy to sacrifice GPU if that’s all I need to do.
Just realised the colour is not necessarily tied to the CPU. It simply coincided that way on the sales I was looking at.
I was thinking of buying the same laptop for college. Fan noise at idle and during basic tasks is really important to me. How did you find the fan noise ? Does it manage to be quiet during browsing and using office applications ?
The laptop is super quiet on silent mode doing day-to-day tasks. It’s only loud when gaming luckily
Great review! I just got my Slim 5 and am in the process of customizing it. It didn't come with a pre-installed OS, so I got it a Windows 11 (which seems to have been a mistake, the more I try to customize it). Had to manually get the Lenovo Vantage app, but it does not have the RGB keyboard menu where it should be. It's just missing...anyone has any idea how to fix it?
Strange. Not at the bottom of the home page ?
Ist the GPU Wattage 100W with Dynamic Boost or without?
What's the difference between LOQ and Slim? I understand that Legion is the premium one and the other two are budget right? So is there any reason to get Slim instead of LOQ is LOQ is cheaper?
The legion has a better screen resolution, higher refreshrate, ram is upgradeable, battery lasts more on the slim, better build quality etc.
Can we get a gaming session for this laptop ? Pls
what your recommend between this slim model 7840hs rtx 4060 with legion 5 pro 7745hx same 4060 but slim has a lighter weight may be feared excessive heat,. The pro model has 200 nits above, display HDR 400, 240 HZ vs 165 HZ and 1 TB instead 512 gb. the price different in my country is around =>120 dollars
If it’s only $120 more I’d probably just get the pro
I'm in between this and the legion 5 pro gen 8 which checking the specs is almost the same. The price difference is around 80 CAD. Which one would be better? Like for build quality, temperature, battery and performance for basic things and a little to moderate gaming. Thanks in advance response!
The pro has better overall build quality. The cpu in the slim is better (the best cpu of the year) in terms of balancing power to battery to heat. The pro will have less battery but the cpu is a monster
This is going to be my first ever gaming laptop. Since i'm not really going to be doing anything crazy will you recommend the slim or just spend 80 more bucks for the pro?
Hi, I would like to ask if the rtx 4060 version on this laptop gives a very different performance than the rtx 4050 version when using 3d modeling and rendering apps?
A little bit sure, but it won’t be ground breaking. I’m reviewing a 4050 laptop right now, I’m surprised how capable it is, especially in professional workflow.
Basically if the 4050 is much cheaper, don’t feel bad, it’s still a great gpu

Can anyone please tell me if the AMD models are using the mediatek wifi card? I'm concerned. I don't want to have to replace a wifi card and am thinking about opting for the 5i model. Thank you !
I've got a question, in India this one isn't available anywhere on internet, but i managed to find this on a Lenovo official store for 1.27 lakh INR (1530$) (this is pretty much unbelievable since legion 5 pro with 4060 costs at 1.7 lakh INR (2050$) )
But Lenovo LoQ with i7 13th gen with 4060 variant costs at 1.1 lakh INR (1300$) here
So what would be better, LOQ or Slim?
I was looking for gaming performance (mostly), Display and battery life, and planning to use it for next 4-5 years.
The thing about me asking between LoQ and Legion s5 is because of wondering if it is really worth it from going from LoQ to Slim 5 for the increase in price, and I'm not sure whether which one gives better performance in games here (since i heard slim's 4060 might perform worse than LoQ's)
just want say it may come any day to lenovo store. slim 5 become available now in Finland and already at discount price 1200€ (7840hs, 4060, 16gb ram, 500gb storage) at a retailer discount -200€ (all tax included) The Pro has better screen, I can only find LOQ here with 250nits screen

Hi, i was thinking of buying this one, we have 2 models coming, 4060 and 4070. The price difference is about 250 euros between them, is 4070 worth that?
Probably not no. 4060 is like 10% slower only
Ok, thanks!
