The G16 with RTX 4090 overheated and throttled my games to 3 FPS, and the audio stopped working randomly until a reboot, so I sent it back and got a refund. The Legion actually works properly. The end.
G16 has no upgradable ram slots. Anyone who buys the 16 gig version is setting themselves up to get severely bottlenecked later. Games like Star Citizen already crash on 16 gigs of ram. That alone makes me prefer the 7i, especially when you can get it for cheaper.
@@little_fluffy_clouds something is wrong with the audio driver of Intel Zephyrus g16s. But to counter your point, the Legion 7i is stuck with 4070 or below. The end.
As a creator, the legion 7i is a perfect compromise. Got the i9/4060/3.2k display sku for $1250 certified refurbished. Going to slap 64gb of ram and a 4tb 990 pro in this bad boy. To get 32gb of ram in the g16 is way too expensive.
The impression i got is that they are different beasts: the legion is your average "take our gamong laptop and make it slimmer"while the g16 is "take a 14 inch and expand it".
25:35 Josh are you sure this tests are correct? Yeah the legion has a more power hungry CPU for sure but it's capping 240FPS while the AMD G16 and what's even stranger the 4090 G16 FPS are much lower. something's off there.
Legion 7i owner here, I really wish lenovo went with 8845hs/185h instead of intel hx. Imo the legion 7i in white is the best looking laptop bar none, but the g16 is just a better laptop in nearly every way. Only reason I went with lenvoo is cus their support/warranty here is incredibly good. I hope lenovo does something to compete with the g16 next year, because right now, its has no competition
Nice comparison man! I really like how comprehensive your reviews are. I purchased an open box G16 4070 (intel) for $2000 CAD ($1450 USD) from Best Buy and It is an absolute steal at that price. Such a nice laptop, would have liked the Ryzen chip, but for a $1200 CAD premium over this one I didn't think it was worth it. Every review mentions the screen wabble, but I think it must have been fixed on newer units because mine is pretty solid.
@@slargo83 from some leaks I’ve seen floating around it looks like 5080/5090 laptops will release first, so if they’re quick to it then maybe as early as January/February, then probably spring time for everything else
@JoshCravesTech I really enjoyed this comparison between the Asus G16 and Lenovo Legion 7 2024! Both laptops have impressive specs, but I'm leaning towards the Asus G16 for its superior portability and much better screen with OLED 240Hz and G-Sync support. The keyboard and overall build quality also seem to be a step ahead, along with its impressive sound and performance. Great review, thanks for the detailed analysis!
numberpad on the legion is my deal breaker for two reasons: 1) having a numpad means no room for good top sided speakers. lenovo laptops will never have competitive audio quality because of their numpad hysteria. 2) looks dumb and creates an off center trackpad. the design will never look nor feel as sleek as designs without a numpad. if you are a numpad defender, that's your opinion. but compromising audio and design for something that can be added via 3rd party hardware for less than $20 will forever be a dumb decision in my eyes.
Couldn't disagree more. I use headphones 99% of the time so I rarely ever need the speakers and if you need to present something on the laptop meeting rooms usually have speakers if the built in speakers can't get the job done. A number pad makes numeric inputs much faster and more comfortable also it gives you access to input special characters like "±" by their ASCII codes instead of having to google them or search through a special character menu. You can even use it in a lot of simulation heavy games that often have a lot of inputs. An external numpad is another unnecessary dongle to keep lugging around.
@megapro125 valid take, but a niche case where a numpad proves to be more useful than audio. point is the general population doesn't need a numpad, and if you do there are easy solutions. can't buy better laptop speakers :)
@isaacpiegat6735 I don't think it is as niche as you think it is. I can see how to many reviewers this wouldn't even occur as they have a whole stack of laptops by nature of their job but most people probably don't have two dedicated laptops for gaming and their day to day office tool for taxes and what have you. I obviously can't speak for everyone but that's what I'd assume at least. The argument "you can just get an external numpad" applies the same to speakers / a soundbar so I guess it's good there are options for both kinds of keyboards on the market.
Really wish Legion 7i would use a more efficient CPU and maybe better GPU options next year. I think the HX processor in that chassis is a bad decision
I have both the g16 and 7i right now and although I do like some of the design choices lenovo made like having the power and hdmi ports in the rear, side by side the g16 looks smaller than the 7i and you can definitely tell in weight. I do find the 7i runs much cooler than the g16 but the lenovo fan curve is way more aggressive so it is a bit louder than the g16 with ghelper. I cant comment on game wise because my g16 has the 4080 and the 7i the 4070 but the lenovo does not run games as well as the g16 in 1440p. The 7i screen is not as good but it is a really great panel. If you are familiar with the lenovo legion go just think of that in 16 inches. Side by side with the g16 and its oled isnt really a fair comparison but if you are docking and playing on a monitor it wouldn't matter that much anyway. For me its the g16 but there are always really decent sales on 7i with the 4070 and 4060 so to me either way its a big win over everything else in this class
G16 HX AI model is looking really good. Waiting on a 50-series model and will probably pull the trigger on one. I do appreciate Best Buy finally offering a 4060 SKU with 32 GB of RAM for only $100 more.
@@AphasiacRaccoon Legion are excellent gaming laptops. G16 looks nice but the cooling system cannot cope unless you stick to modest TDP models such as RTX 4060/4070. Asus also has too many QC problems- the audio on my G16 would stop working randomly until a reboot and no amount of PC resets or driver updates could fix it, so I had to send it back for a refund. Never had a single problem with my multiple Lenovo laptops over the years, each worked perfectly. Currently have a ThinkPad P1 for work and Razer Blade 16 for gaming, both with 4090 GPUs, and both are awesome
@@little_fluffy_cloudstrue I agree, asus has a QC problem, my asus rog died after 2.7 years of use, now I'm replacing motherboard with my own money, asus did not honor the warranty even though my laptop was under warranty.
Performance/graphs aside, how do you rank the quality of life/usage "as a laptop" between the flow x16 (is 4070 model okay or bad for fan/temps) and G16 amd model? Which would u rather have sitting on ur lap....or running in the background....or just moving the mouse around on your desktop in? Or just near you in general psychologically? Graphs don't mean much to me, I often see them put the 2023 legion i7 slim as 'quiet'...that was not quiet and always had to be on balanced to do basic office tasks and performance to run any 3d application even games from 2003 or the fps would tank from 120 to15 every 5s and the keyboard deck would become an oven. And do you think it worth waiting for a 4080 vapor chamber version of the g16 amd if fan noise is really an issue for someone? I'm concerned about the hinge on the g16 intel 4080 still....even tho u said its fine it doens't look fine to me esp if im' using it on uneven surfaces, and many other reviewers r concerned about it too. I didn't see any real difference in the graphs u showed but u said at the end the intel 4080 was quieter enough to mention...so if its enough to mention...
i have both Asus Zephyrus and Legion and i prefer way better on the Legion. I buy gaming laptops each year about twice a year for myself and then i would end up selling to my friends or people for half the price after testing it out.. Legion to me by far is my favorite over Asus by far.
@@Heavenamk it’s a good laptop! I love both of them. Although I disagree with you, I can understand everyone has their subjective tastes. I just think things like having a much better display, better speakers, more portability, better trackpad, nearly double the battery life - those are all more important to me than slightly better temps and a numpad.
@ I think the display is already nice with the legions. 90 percent of the time I use my high end headphones so speaker is really not much of a determining factor. I like the aesthetic more. Most of the time I use it for gaming over the asus. I usually plug in my laptop. As for portability, I use my MacBook Pro m4. Don’t get me wrong Asus laptops are excellent. If only asus makes a white matted finish like the Lenovo then I would or maybe jump ship to it. The points you make are good. But for me, besides specs , I want an aesthetically pleasing laptop. Great reviews by the way. I just subscribed.
@@Heavenamk that’s a very respectable point! I think for your use case and preferences, the Legion sounded like exactly the right choice, especially considering you have the MacBook as well. Also thank you for subscribing!
You missed something really serious in your video regarding color option and price!! Legion 7i white version is on sale frequently not like the G16 which I could not even see it under 2200$!! (I don't like black/metal color of Intel version) I think Asus Zephyrus G16 is a winner here for someone looking for a more complete "laptop", whereas Lenovo Legion 7i is more suited for ones looking for a more powerful, portable workstation that looks nice. Personaly, I've purchased the Legion 7i a month ago for 1700$ , It's still on international shipping though, it's at max configuration and 240Hz screen. I've picked it after conducting research on the internet, to be honest I really like the G16 but I want a white machine and the price difference is insane, more than 500$ for less RAM. I hope I would not regret my pick, I'm dying from waiting here..
@@JoshCravesTech I'm not in the US but I buy from US websites and ship internationally, I could not find any white G16 less than 2200$ with 4070! yes, there're black ones with intel CPU right now at 1600$, nothing regarding white version at all, please mention a store history record if exists, that would help me
After my Asus died in 1 year of casual use and all the horror stories of Asus' awful customer service i decided to get the Legion 7i, im using it to play mmos so im glad i dont have to worry about burn in due to hours of having the same UI up as i game.
Ah yep. Same thing with me. My Asus stopped working after 1 year and just before my birthday as well. At the same time, my Legion 7i was about to be delivered. That was two months ago! Rocking my Legion 7i and I was able to get 10+ hours of battery life on battery! If u optimize it correctly, it’ll be as good as the Zephyrus G16.
Great video and perfect timing since Jarod just did his Laptop Tier list and these were the 2 best at S tier. One editing suggestion: keep the same laptop on the same side of the screen throughout the video if possible. Thanks again for the video ❤
Love this video! I'm seriously considering the G16 right now. Do you think it would be worth it to spend almost $600 more for the 32gb ram and AMD AI 9 version? I'm really tempted by the intel core ultra version with 16gb of ram, especially the open box for around $1350. I do video editing and photoshop, but it's hard to say if 16GB is enough ram
16 gigs is already not quite enough for gaming in 2024. For video editing at 4k, you're going to have an even tougher time. Even if you get the 32 gig version, for video editing, chances are you will still run into ram limitations way before the CPU/GPU start to limit you. That's why upgradable ram should probably be a priority for you.
Damnit Josh, I had just decided yesterday on the g14 over the AMD 370 G 16 and now you pull me right back in. I’ve been into Best Buy five times to look at all the laptops and i’m once again on the fence if I want the lighter G14 or the slightly heavier larger G16.
well the nice thing is neither of these are heavy, the ryzen AI is going to last a lot longer in terms of years than the 8940, if you really dont need the 14" for school work etc i suggest the 16 as a daily driver. ive owned a 14" MBP and it was slightly too cramped for me, my legion slim 16" is perfect tho.
So I was in the same boat as you a few months back, I bought the g16 AMD version at launch, and honestly, the g16 is a freaking AMAZING laptop, but it all depends on how you use it. For me it's a desktop replacement, I sold my ITX desktop build and sidegraded over to a G16, and the desk setup is a LG 45in oled + keyboard/mouse. While this is a pretty great laptop, there's some serious limitations with the formfactor, the 4070 in the G16 does not performance as well as higher TDP models in slightly larger laptops. But the CPU is a freaking BEAST. So I thought, okay I will run this laptop for a year or two, and when I notice performance degradation in new games, I will grab an eGPU dock and use that, but this laptop only has USB4 aka Thunderbolt 3 (maybe 3.5 you could make the argument) so you're going to be bandwidth limited. Overall it's an amazing laptop, but if you use it as any sort of desktop replacement you will be disappointed. But ultimately it's about price, the G14 is going to drop down to around 1200usd with a 4070 during blackfriday (same price it was during the back to school sales at the end of the summer), is the g16 worth 2x the price?
I've bought the legion 7i a couple months ago and had this exact same debate. I prioritize the ram over all the extra features the G16 has. I always have multiple applications running doing different tasks, so the ram always is close to maxing out even at 32 gigs. Also, right now the Lenovo legion is $1850 or $1700 on BestBuy while the g16 with 16 gigs is $1600 on best buy. The g16 with 32 gigs is $2200 on ASUS. That makes the legion a decent amount cheaper than the g16 with the same ram capacity. The screen of the g16 does look great but I personally don't really care for oled. The 3k screen is more than enough for me coming from a 1080p 60 HZ monitor. Battery life doesn't matter to me since I don't really bring my laptop out other than twice a week. And the places where I bring it has outlets so it doesn't matter. The legions battery does suck though. The speakers are not bad on this laptop but could be better. I use headphones so I don't really care. The g16 does have a lot more benefits compared to the Lenovo legion 7i, but I'd rather gets the legion for the price and for the ram. I know I'm missing out on a lot of features, but I have been enjoying the laptop and had not had any issues whatsoever. Great video though.
@@sikees this was a very respectable comment, thank you! I think your use case and preferences make the Legion the better choice for you for sure. The only thing that could change are the sale prices as Best Buy has been changing them like every week lately
Love to see such complete comparisons...well done man. Also there is no weird reason for not having 4080 (and 4090) on AMD Zephyrus; they have embargo, this year only Intel can go with higher than 4070 models. Also to add a big advantage for me on legion 7i, screen can go full 180 degrees and fingerprint for logging in. And in the end, I think that lenovo yoga pro 9i is better than these two in every aspect.
I'm sure the AMD no 4080 and above reason is because this gen AMD only gives 4 lane of PCIE for graphics unlike last gen. The same issues was also the reason Ryzen 4000 series was stuck with RTX 2060 and below and why last gen Zephyrus g14 has 4080 and above since 7000 and 8040 series both have 8 lanes of PCIE lanes for GPU
@@ItsMeProday83the new G14 was also much slimmer and Asus told us that not many ppl were buying the higher config of the g14 hence the shift in design and config
I notice that you know a lot of alt software for gaming laptops. Is there one for omen? Edit: I found omenmon but I am struggling with the installation. A tutorial would be nice
I'll have to check out omenmon! I'm testing the Omen 14 right now. It's a pretty decent laptop. Didn't know about omenmon though, as I haven't really taken a deep dive yet.
Amazing video. I really want to get the Zephryus G16, but the only flaw I have is the lid design, which is wanting me to get the Blade 16 because of its simplistic design, but it’s of course out of stock with the OLED panel and It’s reallly hard deciding between the two. I could just pick up the G16 right now, but I feel like the blade 16 could come into stock any day now. Very very competitive this year with slim gaming laptops.
@@davitdavid7165 I know about the lights, but that lid design with the slash is throwing me off. I really like both machines, but the blade 16 just looks nicer to me, especially in mercury.
@@kaishajacobye I just heard that it is very expensive while being worse at pretty much everything. The only upside of the blade is removable ram, but 32 is good enough for most. You can cover the slash with stickers or something if you don't like it
@ i think theyre pretty much equal in some aspects, with asus having better software but louder fans while razer has worse software and quieter fans. i wouldnt mind getting one over the other, but i wanna wait it out a bit more to see if the blade 16 gets in stock as i prefer the simplistic design over the asus.

Not setting a great example tho .My brother has a g16 and i own a legion 7 has a cinebench score of 30000+/-100 points at 26°c stock settings in performance mode . Try comparing the colors in the 3.2k display to that of the g16 oled . You either missed the places where legion is better or just made the difference look negligible😢. A pretty onesided review 😂. And please use performance mode for gaming and benchmark comparisions on legion . Legions build quality is better in comparison to me atleast .👍🏻Thankyou for the video 🙃 I had to comment since my brother's gonna watch this too🤣
Damn. Keep making the best reviews videos ever one after the other. Very impressive. I bought the G16 185H 4090 when launched and couldn't be happier with it, but I keep watching the reviews because they're just so good.
I bought the Intel G16 a few months ago with a 4080 and i'm pretty pleased with it's performance. Battery is good enough for me but i kinda wish i could get the new Ryzen version with a 4080 (it only goes up to 4070). The reasons for that are that the Intel CPU get's kinda hot even if there is not much going on and I have an issue with audio glitches in youtube videos in everything other than turbo mode which also seems to have it's roots in power management of the Intel chip. I tryed alot of stuff but i can't get rid of the glitches with is a pretty nasty issue to have with a laptop in this price range imo. Idk what wrong but my latencymon numbers for the G16 look way different than yours and there are reddit threads about it so it's not just me. Also my CPU temps under load go way higher then yours into the mid 90°C often with the vapor chamber. No idea what you did to configure it to stay in the low 80s in a game like Control. Maybe you could upload your G-Helper config somewhere? But i have to say all in all i'm pretty happy with this laptop using it for work, gaming and travel (in that order).
@@FluxNoise yeah it’s a great laptop! Latency is very driver-dependent. If you look around, there are people complaining across all Intel Core Ultra laptops about TH-cam playback. Try some different driver versions. People have posted success stories with certain ones, but I couldn’t tell you off the top of my head. And the Intel chip getting warm is normal if it’s hitting 40W or higher. If it’s hitting in the 90’s at less than 30W then that could mean an uneven application of Liquid Metal from the factory. The thermals section of the video was all stock. But if you’re not experiencing frame drops or anything then I wouldn’t worry about it. It’s a super thin laptop so temps will get up there no matter what
@@JoshCravesTech I'm not really concerned about the temps, it's all well within spec and doesn't seem to throttle and the performance is great. The Fans kicking up to >3000rpm on balanced while only browsing YT sometimes seems a little odd but I can live with that. I try to keep my drivers up to date because of security updates. I'm using it for work often dealing with sensitive data and access to sensitive systems so I'm not too keen on messing around with older driver versions. I figured out that deactivating core parking with QuickCPU solved the problem with the audio glitches but I'll see what that means for battery performance in the future. I hope Intel fixes some things in future drivers.
@@FluxNoise I’ll have to try out the core parking thing! And yeah Balanced mode’s tuning could be tightened up a little more from Asus for when you’re doing basic tasks. I don’t do anything but Silent mode for stuff like that.
Ngl, if legion 7i had better port placement, woulda went with it but not regretting my g14 with ryzen 8845hs 4070 Edit: legion 7i is cheaper and even goes on sale frequently with coupons
I've checked G16 at the local BestBuy and having hard time understanding how people enjoy this trackpad. I've tried to type on it, my palm touched the trackpad, cursor moved selected half of the text and it ended up overwritten with a new input. This situation is so ridiculous that Asus added a button to turn off the trackpad.
@@aleksandrivanov4345 you can change trackpad sensitivity in windows settings and pretty much eliminate that issue although I’ve found the palm rejection to be very good
the 2023 version of the legion was terrible I had to return it, it wasn't a laptop it was a pricey desktop jet-engine with good keyboard (when it wasn't burning ur fingers) and bad accessories. I had to clean it even tho it was brand new right from lenovo. It was well packaged I was impressed with the packaging but the laptop had to be dusted and wiped down cause all the dust and it even had some very small visible liquid stains on the bottom by the vents....the terribly budget looking velcrove strap it came with was vomit worthy completely covered in little bits of dirt on the sticky end....it wasn't something u clean its something u throw away. Not a great look considering a decade ago the velcrove strap I got with my ideapad was 'actual velcrove' and actually clean...its sitting on the floor for a decade and still looks clean. Anyone telling u the speakers r okay or good are LYING. These were second only to the wii remote speakers in quality. Gaming on them....literally shot static out. Couldn't even listen to podcasts. And anyone telling u the legion IPS displays are good is lying. It was so depressingly bad. No setting made it better, its like the grocery store newsprint...better than newspaper but still terrible. My decade old ideapad has a WAAAaAAY nicer display and it was 1/3 the price and can game...cause these were "multimedia laptops" aka the gaming lineup of lenovo back then. Would only consider the legions if u want a desktop in laptop form aka ur going to be hooking it up to external mouse/monitor/speakers/everything....and ur getting the slim model so ur really getting worse gear for lighter carry weight....dont think for a second u can put the 2023 model on ur lap....ur going to regret that. if u want it for that purpose I would definitely recommend going i7 and 2k display, NOT the i9 and 3k display....in the hopes that improves the thermals and the screen experience but who knows it might be just as bad. If you want to have some fun try and trick the keyboard into burning your finger. They might have patched it by now but in the 2023 there was always a delay between when the keyboard deck cooling system would turn-on for the top-middle keys when they weren't in use (even when gaming if I didnt use the middle keys long enough it would turn off the fans for the middle of the deck and they would get hoooooot) and u were swapping to higher performance tasks. U could touch like the 6 or 7 key on accident and get some skin blown off when doing some 2002 era gaming on balanced mode. U could literally, wakingup from sleep, load a 2003 game up and within 4minutes of playing on balanced accidently touch the 7 key and burn ur finger....FROM FROSTY COOL SLEEP....it was 'wow'.
The Legion Slim 5 14"? No Gsync, no Advanced Optimus, no thunderbolt/USB4. That alone makes it a thumbs down from me! To not at least have those features on a gaming laptop in 2024 is just 👎👎
Will love the buy the G16 AMD version but we only got 2 models here, a 4060/32GB IPS for €1899,- or the 4070/16GB for €2199,- tough decision to make, I want the OLED but with 32GB. The G14 4070/32GB is €1999 at the moment but a older cpu and smaller size screen. Really frustrating what to choose at the moment.
Hi, i got a g16 intel i9 4070 with 32gb for 1900 € in italy. How is your experience about everyday gaming? P.s. Nice review Josh, greetings from Italy!
The Asus G16 configurations are wired. In Germany we only get the G16 with AMD on the Asus Store with OLED. The other reseller have only the glossy IPS option which is also great.
Asus must be stalking me because I just saw the g14/g16 at best buy and man are they nice machines. I purchased the Legion Slim 7 gen 8 (amd 7840hs and 4060). About a 2lb heavier than the g14 and 1lb heavier than the g16. Plus it's a bit thicker, but it does everything that I need. At first I was excited for the 2024 Legion 7, but after release I feel like they butchered my boy by putting in a 14th gen HX chip instead of an AMD or Lunar lake. Instead of nerfing the GPU (which is normally fair), they decided to nerf the CPU. So you get mediocre CPU and with a good GPU. Then poopoo battery life. There's no point in going for the Legion *slim* 7 gen 9 when you can just get better specs for a true desktop replacement.
An amazing video! These are one of the best gaming laptops! Can you also compare ASUS Zephyrus G16 with Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i? Because it's a more portable and creator-focused version of the Legion 7i: It has better portability, being thinner and lighter with a much longer battery life. It has a better MiniLED screen and speakers as well. It can be configured up to 4070, so it can definitely be used for gaming.
Salemntechsperts covered that one-off button design and it apparently breaks and can't be replaced. I would avoid any laptop with that design, especially one that expensive
@@davitdavid7165 Might as well avoid any consumer laptop then since they all have a chance of breaking, but yes the side power button is known to fail and the non-ideal solution is to not shut down the laptop completely which is what I do so you don't have to touch the power button
@@Exotic-9780 no, there are degrees to how long a design lasts. Yes, a 200 dollar laptop will break in a year, that is to be expected. Yes, even a 400 dollar laptop will fail after years of abuse. But this? Every time you use the button you fatigue a couple small metal parts and more importantly a bit of plastic soldered to the motherboard. If the plastic fails you either solder a new power button thing to your motherboard or, more likely, get a new board. There is a seperete restart hole, but it has the exact same design. For premium multi thousand dollar products to have a problem like this is embarrasing. Lenovo could easily fix the issue with little cost while keeping the design identical. But they wont. You will have to buy a new laptop right after the warrenty expires. And maybe you buy another premium laptop that breaks in 2 years. Some people probably think that is normal, which is crazy. We need to push back against it and warn each other of such issues.
@@davitdavid7165 It shouldn't be normal to have to replace your laptop every two years due to a design flaw I agree with this it is unacceptable, the reason for my first sentence with the first reply is because consumer laptops tend to run into quality control issues more often but you could consider this issue seperate from that, regardless Lenovo cannot keep getting away with cheaping out on something as important as a power button which could fail and make the entire laptop unusable
Hey Josh I'm having hard time selecting between the intel varient with 4080 and the amd model with 4070... I'm only stuck for the copilot or else i would have gone for the 4080 intel
These have been really the only 2 brands to pick from for atleast the past 5yrs or so. Legion, or ROG. Razer makes nice stuff as well, but it's not better (enough) to warrant the price tag IMO. Alienware has a decent model every now and again, but they always seem to forget something, i.e. Great Specs, Bad Display, etc. It's always been Legion for me, but the Asus Zephyrus, and Flow series especially are suuuuper nice as well. I've wanted a Flow for a few years now, will likely be my next machine.
If the g16 supported 175w on the 4080/4090 models out of the box it would be perfect. I tried both the g16 with modified vbios and pro 7i with 4090 and ended up keeping the legion.
@@Tom64735 yeah the Legion pro also has the extra thickness and CPU so it will still win of course. The G16 was never meant to be the performance king! Full wattage will never be possible in a laptop this small

Watching this on my G16 as someone who for the longest time thought Legion 7i was better (I have/had both 2024 models of these laptops) and I can tell you right now, with all the recent updates, G16 is clear, eventhough the Legion is portable too and has upgradable RAM, just buy the 4080/90 version like I have or the AMD version (if the price is even with the Legion) so you get 32GB of ram and you’ll be good to go for years to come, the G16 feels alot better hardware wise, which in return gives the Macbook effect and makes you use it more, the Legion 7i still felt like a stationary computer, where the G16 feels like a real notebook
Agree completey. I have had 2022 G14 and now 2024 Asus Tuf A14, as well a few legion laptops, including Legion Pro and 5 Pro. Asus is generally better in all areas but upgradability. Also the fan behavour and fan noise is extremely calm compared to Legion, which most have a higher whine pitch to them. I dont even mind playing without headphones on this 14inch laptop. Truly amazing

I’ve just tried 5 amd g16s and am about to grab a 6th because I desperately want this to work-the fan ringing has NOT been fixed by any updates. Thanks for the review. I really wanted the g16 🥲 But g16 is much expensive and the oled screen isn’t guaranteed since I use adobe softwares for hours everyday, I think it will get burn out. I can’t trust the new oled technologies for now. I purchased the legion 7i since I found it for $730 cad less, I love it but I can feel the warm even in light use. I wish these people will stop talking about size and battery life. JUST TELL ME WHICH ON IS THE FUCKING BEST !!!GAMINGGG!!!! LAPTOP. That's literally all I want to fucking know. God
@@cornedenecker1636 unfortunately for you there’s a lot more to a gaming laptop that determines which one is the “best”. If you want to know which one performs better then just skip to the benchmarks. Also “best” is very subjective as a gaming laptop with portability and battery life might be the best for someone else but not for you.
@JoshCravesTech uhm, the best literally is, which one performs the best. Nobody plays games on battery power because it's shit. So many times in so many videos you ramble on about the size of a power brick. Nobody gives a shit. If I go buy a gaming laptop which I'm in the market for now. I just want to know ok, which one is gonna give me the best fps and frames with a nice fast screen. Obviously the info on soldered memory etc is nice to know. But geez, do you honestly think gamers care about the weight and size and battery life. Size of the brick haha. Because I sure as hell don't. I care about performance. That's what a gaming laptop is for
@cornedenecker1636 These kinds of comments are just dumb. This video is not about the best-performing gaming laptop; it's about the best portability-performance-features balance. If you want the best performance, get a desktop PC. I travel all the time for work and used to have a Lenovo Legion Pro 7 4080, which was killing my back from traveling with it all the time. My biggest problem with the Legion was that, even though it was expensive, it didn't have a fingerprint reader, face unlock, or a quality screen. The screen quality between Lenovo and Asus is lightyears apart.
As much as the Ultra 9 in G16 looks a good deal, when you use the AMD HX 9 370 for anything apart from gaming, you will see big gap in thermals and performance. Looks like Asus knows this very well, so they are not discounting the AMD, as it is capped with 4070, it appeals more to creators than gamers.
when I see temps 80degrees and 96 = what the actual ... Rly ? Do you want to have them on such temp ? your card would die v. v. v. fast ot even faster! I got on mine stationalry 55-60 is max I mean for me max as I do not want to have it wear to fast! if you got it on 2year or more fix for free guarantee then ok you can use that but if not ... omg what a waste of money :(.
That alone makes me prefer the 7i, especially when you can get it for cheaper.

numberpad on the legion is my deal breaker for two reasons:
1) having a numpad means no room for good top sided speakers. lenovo laptops will never have competitive audio quality because of their numpad hysteria.
@@isaacpiegat6735 people get real salty about this but I 1000% agree
@megapro125 buying external speakers is in no way comparable to an external numpad.
Really wish Legion 7i would use a more efficient CPU and maybe better GPU options next year. I think the HX processor in that chassis is a bad decision

100% agreed Ultra 100 series or ryzen 8000 or even the 300 AI series would have been much much better.

Um actually, it was the G14 that was S tier and not the G16 (it was A tier).
If you need the GPU power the Intel +4080 is within 100/200 dollars from the AMD+4070 version especially on sale. Also comes with 32gb of RAM
Thanks! I will say, I currently have a desktop with 32gb of RAM and I've never got a bottleneck, so I'm already confident in the 32gb model.
But ultimately it's about price, the G14 is going to drop down to around 1200usd with a 4070 during blackfriday (same price it was during the back to school sales at the end of the summer), is the g16 worth 2x the price?
g16 i switched from a 14 inch laptop to 16 inch the difference is unreal u wont regret it :)

I'd argue that's a pretty weird and anti-consumer move.

Ngl, if legion 7i had better port placement, woulda went with it but not regretting my g14 with ryzen 8845hs 4070
Edit: legion 7i is cheaper and even goes on sale frequently with coupons
I've checked G16 at the local BestBuy and having hard time understanding how people enjoy this trackpad. I've tried to type on it, my palm touched the trackpad, cursor moved selected half of the text and it ended up overwritten with a new input. This situation is so ridiculous that Asus added a button to turn off the trackpad.
@@aleksandrivanov4345 you can change trackpad sensitivity in windows settings and pretty much eliminate that issue although I’ve found the palm rejection to be very good
hi josh ty for helping me on reddit, love your videos :3
the 2023 version of the legion was terrible I had to return it, it wasn't a laptop it was a pricey desktop jet-engine with good keyboard (when it wasn't burning ur fingers) and bad accessories.
It would be interesting to compare the 14 inch legion to the g14 as well. I am currently torn between those 2
The Legion Slim 5 14"? No Gsync, no Advanced Optimus, no thunderbolt/USB4. That alone makes it a thumbs down from me! To not at least have those features on a gaming laptop in 2024 is just 👎👎
@JoshCravesTech I think more channels should have mentioned all that. Will keep in mind.
@@davitdavid7165 yep, funny how the major review channels brushed over that! Lol
Great review. I would go with the G16 AMD version as it has the most powerful and power efficient CPU.
The AMD CPU is amazing. If it was paired with a high-tier GPU it would be endgame
That has to be the best speaker test I've ever seen/heard 😂
If the current 4070+185H which is on sale right now for $1600 has 32GB of ram then no one would be able to compete with Asus
Lenovo Laptops are best in Silent Mode and you really wanna play only in this mode in most games (indies etc)
Hi, i got a g16 intel i9 4070 with 32gb for 1900 € in italy. How is your experience about everyday gaming?
P.s. Nice review Josh, greetings from Italy!
Nice! It does very well with everyday gaming, productivity, and pretty much everything you can throw at it!
The Asus G16 configurations are wired. In Germany we only get the G16 with AMD on the Asus Store with OLED. The other reseller have only the glossy IPS option which is also great.
Definitely lol. It would be much better if there are 4060+32gb G14 or 4070+32gb G16 for $100 more
Asus must be stalking me because I just saw the g14/g16 at best buy and man are they nice machines.
There’s some Reddit comments that the Liquid Metal might come out of its place and kill mobo. It’s also something that I’m afraid of.
The Yoga isn't a dedicated gaming laptop keep in mind. But Lenovo really should bring over the Yoga's trackpad and speakers to the Legion lineup.
Josh has a vendetta against Legion 7i lol
Not his fault Lenovo fumbled where it matters for portable laptops
@mcslender2965 Dude, their weight difference is 0.4 with Legion 7i being 2.2 kg and G16 at 1.8 kg. wouldn't say they fumbled.

@@cornedenecker1636 unfortunately for you there’s a lot more to a gaming laptop that determines which one is the “best”.
