Rangerover-itis has struck again. This time it caused me to buy a 4.2 Supercharged Range Rover (against my better judgement). Having driven it now for a couple of weeks; I'm genuinely confused. Some days I think it's utterly pointless. Other times I think it's perfect. Do you fancy hearing my rambling thoughts on it for fifteen minutes? If so, you're in luck.

Drive a Land Cruiser or a Lexus Lx, it feels even better than the range rovers to drive. The incredible driving position, king of road feeling and indestructible nature. im not making this up but if i had a choice my first car would be the Lexus Lx and my second car will be a Range Rover.
Im from UAE, here Land Cruiser is the bigger 200 series, the ones u guys mostly get is the smaller 150 series Land Cruiser or more commonly known as Land Cruiser Prado which is what i drive

I have the 2011 4.4 TDV8 L322 and every time it goes wrong I look and look for a ‘reliable alternative’ and every time I get it back from the garage and drive it away, I remember there is NOTHING else that ticks all the boxes that mine does. I think this 4.2 Supercharged engine just simply perfect. It's just there to give you the power what you really need and not more than that. It's never going to be a race car or even quickis as you've said but it's gonna be dynamic, vigorous that no one ever can stop you. You can just reach your desired speed with the most elegant way from any RPM . No laggs.

I own a 2007 4.2Ltr Supercharged Range Rover, and it is simply a delight to drive and motor in. I know that sound on your video, the engine roaring, and the feeling of supreme power. I own a 4.4 V8 Diesel autobiography. I've owned 6 years now. I use it weekends and long trips. I have never had one breakdown with it . Granted every year it gets a service from a mechanic I've known for 20 years who I know will do a thorough job. You have to understand when you buy one parts are expensive and running costs aren't cheap. Mines been used for friends weddings , Prom nights etc. There isn't one day I regret owning it and all the toys still work perfectly too. I've had five RR and they've been very reliable, yes five one every decade or so since 1972. In fact they have only one fault, and its not unreliability, its fuel consumption. All the rest is perfect, just perfect.

Isn’t it true that the 2006, Supercharged is the “sweet spot” and the least problematic and most reliable of all the L322 models? The right reliable engine, the right reliable gearbox, the manual handbrake, and fewer electronics. Also “Be honest, some of you could start an argument in an empty room,” was mint!

Being from the US I always wondered why MPG was so much higher relatively in GB, and now - after you qualified your MPG with the Imperial Gallon note - I get it now. It never made sense to me, but the Imperial gallon being roughly 1.2 US gallons the additional 20% somewhat explains the differences. Also I realize you guys have far more engine choices especially regarding diesel. I wish we had more of those available here frankly, but Americans just don't buy them - in cars anyway. That said, our fuel prices are significantly lower and allows us to thumb our noses at fuel economy more so than in GB/Europe I suppose. To be sure, 12 MPG (even in US gallons) is really bad LOL. Great video yet again. Despite the MPG love the SC Range Rover. She's a beautiful automobile.

My mum recently bought a 2014 Vogue and I had it for a month before export. Absolutely loved it and I have to say I have never felt that special driving a car before- I've driven Mercs, Beemers, Audis but this was just on another level. Worse still, I drove a 19 plate Landcruiser at the start of the year- yet I still felt better in the Range. However in that month the parking break had an issue- had to replace it. Found a genuine used part for £100, labour from an Indi mechanic was £150 so £250 all in. Also one of the fog lamps went so that needed replacing , small job £60 all in.
I certainly agree that Range Rover unreliability is exaggerated however when big things go wrong with these Range Rovers they can be expensive.
Funnily enough I am in the market myself for an SUV to ferry my family around and I have been pulling my hair out trying to decide between a 2010 Sport and a 2011 Touareg. I think I will just go for it and get the Sport.

Just found your channel and I'm keen to see your experiences, as I love Range Rovers, despite I also buy Mercedes as daily drivers, but both Sports ad Vogues are unique propositions! I've had NO issues of reliability with mine, my favourite was a SPORT, the only thing annoyed me was the "Gearbox Fault" warning light which LR tell me is the default warning code for almost everything, but likely never the actual gearbox itself!

    • @HighPeakAutos

Hi! Thanks for your comments. I've had the warning show on some Jags too, its never anything serious.

  • @NigelMarston

Also, the L322 is about half a ton heavier than a Cayenne. And although I love the German SUVs, even those of them on air suspension (like my own), none of them ride like the RR. That extra weight just flattens any road, and translates into a seriously plush ride.
My colleague has a 4.2SC on LPG. It's true that he gets significantly better "relative" mpg but it was an expensive installation so you'd have to factor into your decision how many miles you'd have to do to recoup that cost. On these older cars, I doubt people buy them intending to keep them for a long time. Surely they can only be for second cars (not many miles / special occasions), or for time-limited ownership to "get it out of your system"?
Ultimately though, I think you're right that the TDV8 makes more sense. Running a big heavy diesel SUV around doesn't make your wallet squirm when you floor the accelerator. At 12mpg, every time you stepped into it, you'd question whether the journey was worthwhile... and I'm not one to normally worry about economy (I've never owned a car that can do more than 25mpg).

    • @HighPeakAutos
      @HighPeakAutos  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Just stumbled upon this while flicking thru, must say,as a 34 year veteran of the motor trade I can relate to pretty much everything you’ve said, especially when you mentioned the keyboard warriors who had 1 fault 12 years ago that condemned that particular model to hell !! One thing to point out tho,if you’re worried about mpg...don’t buy a range rover, large and regular fuel bills are part and parcel of ownership, shouldn’t complain about it really. And I think the word “waft” was invented by Landrover FOR the Rangerover. ..... there’s no other car to make you feel like you do when you drive one,I’ve had 10 😯.... Hi, can I first say how refreshing your videos are, job well done. Once drove the TD V8 a friend had as I was considering buying it, but found for me it was just a little bit too laid-back and disconnected from the road like a limo I suppose, but I am a petrol head I really always had performance cars but now unfortunately blessed with a bad back problem! So I suppose that was never going to work LOL. After having an X5M for one year which was very quick but the seats were so uncomfortable I swapped it for a 63 plate L320 5.0 RRSSC autobiography and absolutely love it. I think the difference is with the sport versus FFRR is its ...Well more sporty, so the engine doesn’t feel so out of place, In fact I think for me it makes the car, but couldn’t imagine why you would put it or previous version in a full fat Range Rover or for equally why you would put it in a Disco 4 which we also have (not that they did do with the s/c engine) but what a frightening thought! 😂. just for the record getting about 17mpg around town & upto 26mpg motorway ...... Keep up the good work!!

My Dad owns one of these and has done since September 2016. Issues with it have been the reversing camera not working, parking sensors going crazy, air suspension bag bursting and the alternator failing. A lot of money was paid to fix the major problems but it was worth it. I respect your opinion about this been a waste of money and the TDV8 been better, but the Supercharged V8 engine in my opinion makes this car more gangster like, more fun at overtaking (especially off roundabouts) and the sound is certainly something to live for. So I’d certainly choose this for now (when I’ve had enough of my X-Type), however having not been out in a TDV8 or 4.4 V8 Petrol, I cant really comment on those.

Good review along with the Harry’s Garage one on his RR - as you say lots of cars have faults and a 2.5 tonne luxury car is going to have more to go wrong than a Honda Jazz so you have to keep it in context with its competition - 7 series, S-Class and other luxury SUVs. Nice way to travel if you can afford it.

Great Video, I loved the reference to Dianne Abbot. I have an 06 L322 4.2 supercharged overfinch & I love it, sure the MPG isn't up to much but you don't buy any Range Rover for economy reasons. Have you checked in the passenger side dash as I thought all L322's have a second cup holder above the courtesy light below the fresh air vent, there should be a pop in/out cup holder there which is adjustable depending on the diameter of the cup/bottle? I'm a true addict to this channel now - loving the no BS approach and candid views.
Wholeheartedly agree (again) with the review, I always laugh when people state LR products are unreliable, usually from people that have never driven one or in most cases can't afford too (the latter I mean in terms of servicing, buying and owning - I'm not being a snob). I think the L322 still looks classy and is the last of the original LR shape of boxy cars (excl. LR4 of course). I owned both the 4.4 and 5.0 SC versions - the 4.4 had electrical gremlins but was bulletproof otherwise (BMW ownership days), the 5l was a monster - they gave you just over 500bhp which made it ridiculously fast in comparison to the 4.2 SC. The 4.2 SC in my RRS felt fast but was actually pretty slow, it reached 0-60 in 7.6 secs - the 5litre, on the other hand, was 5.4 seconds so a massive difference.
I took delivery of a BMW 340i (run out model) a few months ago, it just hit 4,000 miles and the suspension has started the dreaded click of death - something I had on the previous 330d - so if its unreliability you are after, as you say, all cars have faults of some order.
I've been without a LR product for 3 months now, as good as the BMW is, its nowhere near a RR in terms of feel-good factor, driving position, ability or desirability IMO, yes 2 completely different car sectors, but the RR has it all and makes you feel magic to boot.
    Keep up the good work.

I never said the 4.2 supercharged sport was slower its probably 0.2 or 0.3 sec faster than the full size range rover. What I am saying is the information is wrong on most adverts they say 0-60 in 7.5 0r 7.6 seconds which is a lie.
Here is a link for all range rovers top speed etc. go to the 2006 l322 supercharged engine
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Range_Rover_(L322)
      What it says in short:
The Range Rover's exterior was updated for 2006 along with the BMW V8 being replaced with a Jaguar unit. The new engine choices were Jaguar's AJ-V8, with 4.4-litre 300 hp (220 kW) or 4.2-litre 400 hp (300 kW) supercharged variants. This new Range Rover was officially presented at the 2005 North American International Auto Show and released in summer 2005.
From the diesel engine of the 2006 model (at this time still the BMW six-cylinder unit) to the supercharged V8, the car could reach 60 mph (97 km/h) from 14.8 seconds or as little as 6.5 seconds and has a top speed from 110 mph (180 km/h) to approximately 130 mph (210 km/h) (governed), respectively. @@HighPeakAutos
IT CLEARLY SAYS CAN REACH 60MPH IN AS LITTLE AS 6.5 SECONDS
I have tested it quite a few times and that seems right.

BMWs have some very expensive faults, the 1 Series DPF cost £3500, it's more than the X5 at £1500.
That good old N47 engine with its habit of letting go, seemingly at random.

@@aDmaNN266 I think many people who drive diesels really would have been better off with a petrol model, especially little old ladies who only pop to the shops & back.

e@@Zerofightervi 100% mate, I tell all of the people I know that, they don't dive but drive a diesel, which is costly to maintain or repair if something goes, and it does if you do not drive a diesel car to a foreign country or city to city everyday in a business, it does not pay off to own one. Just get e36 bmw petrol for pennies and it will run forever to shop and to work

I'd say get one if you want one but be careful where you have work done to it and just enjoy it, I used to work at a valet for Heathrow T5 and there wasnt a day that went by where I didn't drive atleast 1 range rover they are so popular and as a valet I found them to feel no more cumbersome than a Q7(infact the Q7 feels fat) and they are really not bad to park just hard to get in and out of if it's a tight space. I only noticed a few faults like air suspension or some other warning message but they seemed to drive lovely regardless.

Sorely tempted to go for a local Jag XF SV8, which is no doubt the same engine as this one. Love the idea of a crazy supercharged v8 but could I live with it I wonder 🤔 Another great review btw 👍🏻

Good video. I love the Range Rover also, but you do need deep pockets to keep them on the road. It's a wealthy persons chariot, and they are lovely to drive. I think the idea for the Jaguar engine is just that so you can waft along smoothly with refinement, kind of like a Jag really. Even though it doesn't make sense I would still buy one. You buy these with your heart not your head. When you park your brain that's when they actually make sense.

Hi another positive about a range rover is it's absolutely fantastic in bad weather. I know the fuel consumption is a bit disappointing but like you said if you want economy buy a fiesta or something like that. You don't buy a sledgehammer to crack a nut. People who go for a range rover shouldn't be too concerned with running costs, if you can't afford one buy something else. Ace video thanks for all your reviews 😊👍

Bought a 2008 supercharged and it had an electrical fire while I was driving it lol. Was able to pull it into a parking lot and things got worse. Flames licking up from under the dash, washers and wipers going, side airbag went off, lights flickering and some burnt out. Was able to put out the fire and disconnected the battery. The car was a total loss. Did love the Range Rover and plan to buy another one. Going to get a 2013 Supercharged or newer.

Thanks for this useful video with reallife comments you make and for recommending to to buy the 4.4 td v8 instead. Pls. make these practical comparison comments in your reviews with other models and other brands as much as possible.
İt is so helpfull to watch your video reviews and hear those realistic views for people who are trying to make a secondhand purchase. Also thanks for similarly very true opinion you expressed about chosing a used freelander over a new two wheel drive qashqai with that awfull cvt tranmission. I owned both and freelander is a better vehicle by far.

Hey mate. Your laid back & practical reviews, combined w/ English sense of humour is gold. What's your experience with 6-10 yr old civics? They score high on the reliability index, have good engine choices & other than DPF issues on diesels I can't find any red flags. Parts also seem cheap & as they're old man cars they seem more looked after than most used cars. Would appreciate your opinion, thanks & keep up with the vids

Hi! Thanks for your comments. My brother has an 08 Civic diesel and never had any issue. The 2.2 diesel is very reliable. The newer iDtec has DPF's which can cause some headaches, but they're still better than most

I do understand the appeal of Range Rovers, I had a ride in one many years ago and it definitely made an impression. I don't think I could deal with the sheer size and the thirst of them though. There's quite a lot of narrow roads around here and parking in my street is tricky, it would be more of a worry than a pleasure most of the time. I might consider an Evoke in a few years.

Your new RR is very nice! Big fan of the supercharged RR's, even if they are a tad thirsty. My 2008 TDV6 RR Sport seems to deliver plenty of power for it's size and thankfully it has 2 cup holders!
