I owned a Land Cruiser 80 series with the HZ engine for 12 years and literally nothing on it broke in that time, the gearbox started sticking slightly one winter, I had used it for towing trailers and regularly up and down a bumpy track. My friend had a discovery 3 at the same time and it was constantly in and out of the garage I may have just been lucky/unlucky but I've stuck to Japanese engineering ever since.

The way that the RR climbed that final hill making it look like a regular road was amazing. Still if I was interested in doing some serious off roading here in Australia I'd pick the cruiser. They have a solid history of people actually taking them serious off roading and making it back.
I spend 99% of my time in outback Australia and have seen more LC's on the back of flat beds than I've had breakfasts. That may well be because there are thousands of them. In fact, i think its something like 1 MILLION of them have been sold in Australia over the years. There are so many of them, not because they are particularly reliable .. but because Toyota does MASSIVE lease deals with mining companies .. hence Toyota Service Centres on just about every street corner. Toyota certainly beats LR hands down on the number of service centres. Check with ANY Landcruiser service centre and you will find that they are booked out doing repairs to these 'reliable' 4x4's. As far as repairs go, LR is possibly cheaper for repairs than Toyota .. especially when you consider that most LR owners do repairs themselves. There is also a FAR MORE 'social' aspect around LR owners, clubs and forums .. a tremendous amount of help out there from the multitude of LR forums in particular. Where are the Landcruiser forums? Guy in his 200 Series LC opposite me just had his radiator replaced .. a $2,000 job .. due to some 'plastic' part failure and quite a common fault apparently. The fact is BOTH Land Rover and Toyota are NOT as reliable as they used to be years ago, but as far as comfort goes, LR are light years ahead of any LC. If you want to question Land Rover's 'pedigree' .. just look up 'Camel Trophy' on TH-cam. Please direct me to the Toyota's 'equivalent'.

Toyota Land Cruiser all the way range rover are so crap you cant insure them in the uk anymore and they break down here were the roads are good compared to other countries
Be honest, the real challenge for these vehicles is to see which is the easiest to manoeuvre in a supermarket car park or can complete the school run in the shortest time.
In the UK the RR is far preferred due to its unmatched ability to get across wet grass, sticky mud, and through deep farm track ruts and uneven ground, especially when towing trailers. These are the predominant problems here. The RR's tight turning circle is a godsend when negotiating narrow woodland tracks with a farm trailer. Also, the rising and lowering suspension makes putting trailers on the tow hitch far easier. Getting stuck in the mud in the UK is seldom life threatening except for emergency services, but it is a nuisance to have to get the tractor out. So RR's save a lot of time and hassle, and they can also double up as a great motorway cruiser and are fine in town too which saves having to buy a second car. In the UK there is always a Landrover specialist nearby to fix things within a few hours, so the reliability issue is minor. Lastly cost. Excellent secondhand diesel RR Sports are plentiful and cheap as chips in the UK, making them perhaps the most economical and capable 4WD farm transport. This is why most UK country folk have some sort of Landrover.
Finally, someone on TH-cam talking sense about Rangies. I love full fat Land Cruisers to bits but the Range Rover is perfectly designed for the UK (although the amount of theft is frankly ridiculous).
Rangies are more common because they are local. The LC is still better on most of those surfaces you stated. Tires matter a lot for that basic soccer mom stuff
My dad and uncle were working in Siberia from 1992. First car was a Land Rover defender. It just refused to start at 45 degrees negative. Then was something American, if my memory serves me well. That crap broke down even faster. Then it was a land cruiser from 1998. That car was running and driving almost 20 years. Has over 1m km on its odometer. Never gave us hard time. The cruiser can do this challenge everyday for 10 years without breaking trust me. The rover will do it for 1month and then engine light will appear trust me.
@itsshamsi that's exactly what I wanted to say why use and old generation Land Cruiser against a new generation Range Rover that's not realistic at all
Having owned a FJ80 4.2 TD Landcruiser and currently a Range Rover, The LC was slightly better off road, the electronics help in the RR and having 3 locking diffs on the LC really made it a very capable off roader. My current RR has centre and rear diff locks and coupled with the traction control for the front wheels make off-roading effortless, where the LC you had to take a lot more care with how you drove it. Most weekends you could find me up top of the Pennines in the LC.
Let me say this. The Land cruiser is a tough car made for tough roads. However, the driver of the Land cruiser willingly and knowingly made the mistakes which brought the points low. So blame the driver for his poor driving and not the Land cruiser!!!
Dude. Seriously. Get over it. It’s just for fun. I suppose you think the low profile tyres on the Range Rover help it ? The Rangie has amazing tech. It’s a huge help. The ride being IFS and IRS suspension will mean it will handle better on bumps and cornering. That being said. Would I take a Range Rover on a serious expedition ? Hhhmmm. I think not. While they are clearly a more refined vehicle I wouldn’t trust it like a Landcruiser. My 2 cents is. The range is far superior but if reliability is what you’re after I’d go the cruiser with twin lockers every day.
The tech is exactly what rural remote and outback owners hate, too much to go wrong and too few service agents to repair them. Also few 4wd here in Oz aren't modified with local upgrades including appropriate tyres and suspension lifts/upgrades.

The Range Rover is really bad lol, just because its a really expensive 4x4 SUV clearly doesn't make it a off-offroader, the range rover is too short and heavy to do well in off-roading, the places they test off-roading you can go to with a trabant.
Interesting. With many years in Africa, away from towns, I'm used to using 'various Toyota products', so perhaps nice to see just how competent the RR really was. Good point was to consider how it would fare 'in the real world', for months at a time .... Al.

Yeah, my unpopular opinion probably is that the Land Cruiser looked amazing in that color scheme paired with those wheels. Looked so clean too. Love it!
Hi Matt, enjoyed seeing the 4 by 4 joust between these two cars. Would be interesting to explore further; such as how each model/engine system copes with varying qualities of fuel, how easy are they to get competently serviced around the globe. Targeting the luxury market with a high spec system that on paper performs very well, a high performance engine that is very sensitive to varying fuel quality, dependent upon top notch servicing, good traction control but how well do they do in the real world. One of these car manufacturers made (sadly in my view) a decision a while ago to focus on the high end market share at the expense of the broader market with more mass appeal. The result; around the world and outside of modern cities of the developed world, one of these makes is much easier to maintain and readily repair than the other one. And when you're remote or in the middle of the desert you have enough to worry about as it is. London to Cape Town, now that would put them through their paces?
There are 10 year old Discoverys that have about 200k miles but never broke down. Not sure about the Range Rover but as I know never models are reliable.

Also I think Matt fudges these offroad vids as the RR I just got rid off last year couldn't even get down the same routes as my old Grand Vitara could around 2006-2008. It's already been well proven that LC are better offroad buy Matt is happy to shill out to LR he's done it before too.
Without a doubt I am impressed with the Range, since it has low profile - all season tires. Of course, the land cruiser will go the distance and if there is anything wrong it will be easily fixable (it is repair friendly).

The choice between a Toyota Land Cruiser and a Land Rover depends on various factors, including personal preferences, specific needs, and usage requirements. Both vehicles are renowned for their off-road capabilities and have their own distinct features. Here are some points to consider: Toyota Land Cruiser: Reliability: Toyota vehicles, including the Land Cruiser, have a reputation for being incredibly reliable and durable. Off-road performance: The Land Cruiser is known for its exceptional off-road capabilities, with advanced features like a robust four-wheel-drive system, solid axle suspension, and excellent ground clearance. Resale value: Land Cruisers tend to retain their value well over time, making them a good investment. Land Rover: Luxury and refinement: Land Rovers, particularly models like the Range Rover, offer luxurious interiors, premium materials, and advanced comfort features. Off-road prowess: Land Rovers have a strong off-road heritage and are equipped with sophisticated technologies, such as Terrain Response systems, which optimize the vehicle's performance on different surfaces. Styling: Land Rover vehicles often feature distinctive and eye-catching designs, combining elegance and ruggedness. Ultimately, the "better" choice depends on your priorities. If you prioritize reliability and durability, the Land Cruiser may be a suitable option. If you value luxury, refinement, and advanced technology, a Land Rover might be more appealing. It's advisable to test drive both vehicles, research their features, and consider your specific needs before making a decision.

But again if you dont have extra 50k reserved then do not buy it. If you plan not to get it regularly it will. Such a good program thank you! The Old Land Cruiser looks like an early 1990's vehicle, it looks like a Japanese vehicle from prior to Japan went into its lost, now coming up to 4 decades. The "Landie" as we call it here in New Zealand is still a Legend! The name "Landie" was once owned by Land Rover for 2-3 Decades and then the Great Brand Toyota took over the affectionate name "Landie" and showcased brilliant Japanese Engineering at its best! It was great in the Southern Alps, McKenzie Country, getting up to the Ski fields, bush tracks hunting etc but it has become too expensive, both these vehicles have been replaced here in New Zealand by the Ford Ranger. Now we can buy 3 Ford Rangers for the price of a Toyota Landcruiser and yes the Ford Ranger is reliable as its Toyota! There is nothing like the original Jeep, and then the Aluminum Land Rover. On Farms in NZ, when the Land Rover's engine crapped out as it did relatively early in its life Cockies (Farmers) here would drop in a GM Holden, or Ford Straight Six Engine and the old beast would go on forever, many are still going and valued on Farms. Japan is now an expensive place to make things, but its Brands always stand for Quality. Toyota will come back as long as Japan only makes top Quality Products which I expect them to do!
Ford trucks are good, but Toyota is much better. Especially here in the United States where they're driving much closer to the million mile mark. I sold my Tundra with just over 250k miles and I only ever replaced the alternater. Hopefully the Ranger holds up to the test if time.

It is disappointing that a lot of comparisons do not compare like with like. Vehicles should have similar tyres etc and both have the same locking differential. I know this may make the comparison costly but I think it would be more interesting.
Hmm...pretty sure by visuals alone, one is luxury vehicle and they other is an under dog. Why not run them head on and the same speed and see which still drives away. Then turn the 2 over and drop them on their and see if the driver and passengers arn't crushed.

Yup! The 300 series is a very capable car indeed!
I owned a Land Cruiser 80 series with the HZ engine for 12 years and literally nothing on it broke in that time, the gearbox started sticking slightly one winter, I had used it for towing trailers and regularly up and down a bumpy track.

Wrong.. which one would still be around after 25 years.
Be honest, you never been off road so you have no idea what car people take off road. Hint: it includes these 2 cars.

The choice between a Toyota Land Cruiser and a Land Rover depends on various factors, including personal preferences, specific needs, and usage requirements. Both vehicles are renowned for their off-road capabilities and have their own distinct features. Here are some points to consider:
Toyota Land Cruiser:
Reliability: Toyota vehicles, including the Land Cruiser, have a reputation for being incredibly reliable and durable.
Off-road performance: The Land Cruiser is known for its exceptional off-road capabilities, with advanced features like a robust four-wheel-drive system, solid axle suspension, and excellent ground clearance.
Resale value: Land Cruisers tend to retain their value well over time, making them a good investment.
Land Rover:
Luxury and refinement: Land Rovers, particularly models like the Range Rover, offer luxurious interiors, premium materials, and advanced comfort features.

Hopefully the Ranger holds up to the test if time.

the range rover is an absolute work of art this thing is wonderfully designed.
and hopeless reliability
@@darrengoodale6854 thats a myth
Lol oh really read any reliability report
@@darrengoodale6854 mine of my range rover sport never had anything, thats my proof. Not from an american web fully sponsored by the competition with fake reports and accounts from the internet. Thats called fake news, you learned something new today.
I'm not in the us and I've been in the car job for yrs but I'm sure you no far more than me🙄
The smile of darren is like a child. It is priceless. I really enjoy that moment.
13:59 time line
The difference being, the Land Cruiser could do all that and much more, all day, every day, for the next 20 years. The Range Rover ...not so much ;)
6:55 129066 miles on the LC200, I wonder in the same 120k miles how many times that Range Rover will be in a workshop awaiting repairs, monthly maybe 🤣🤣
While that Cruiser probably had only oil changes and brake pads done, and it's maybe on its original rotors, at least at the back. It's literally brand new at 130k miles.
While 130k on that Range would probably be it's death after a few transmissions, a dozen modules and motors, and maybe an engine or two.
it's a fact that Toyota did made reliable car, that is why Saudi buy so many Landcruiser more that buying Range Rover. I have watch some video about Landcruiser owner is Saudi and they really tell that Toyota are better in reliability even better than Nissan Patrol
This is obvoiusly just "very light" off-roading. 'Coz the conditions you've tackled here is just like the driveway on our farm from the mainroad to the residence. 😁😁
I would never take that Range Rover off-road, it's just so beautiful.
I suspect you’re never going to have to worry about this

It is disappointing that a lot of comparisons do not compare like with like. Vehicles should have similar tyres etc and both have the same locking differential. I know this may make the comparison costly but I think it would be more interesting.
Hmm...pretty sure by visuals alone, one is luxury vehicle and they other is an under dog. Why not run them head on and the same speed and see which still drives away. Then turn the 2 over and drop them on their and see if the driver and passengers arn't crushed.
A serious comparison is kind of pointless. If you want a car to show off to your yuppie friends get the Range Rover. For everything else the LandCruiser is superior. Theres a reason why you never see Range Rovers doing 4WD.
Comparing the RR to the LC is wrong to begin with. A better comparison would be the LC to a Disco.
@@LabiaLicker I think the reason you dont see range rovers doing 4wd is more because of the cost of the things, if money didnt matter I would take the range rover as in lots of test videos it genuinely seems more capable, but in the real world I would take the land cruiser
Watch suv battle channel the real offroad channel, and the range won over the lc there as well, I'm taking about new and old both lc
Imagine that 22year old LC is having a match with a 2022 LR 😅
And still 22 years ago that lc was beat up by a range rover 🤣
@@mahir6239 But where is that 22year old range rover now 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
@@Sunburnae92 22 years range rover can easily seen on road, they may have a few problems but most problems are from those which doesn't even exist in lc
Range rover is king as always 😎😎😎
The Range Rover would be the quickest back to the dealership and has the reliability of a market stall Rolex.
