The way that the RR climbed that final hill making it look like a regular road was amazing. Still if I was interested in doing some serious off roading here in Australia I'd pick the cruiser. They have a solid history of people actually taking them serious off roading and making it back.
I spend 99% of my time in outback Australia and have seen more LC's on the back of flat beds than I've had breakfasts. That may well be because there are thousands of them. In fact, i think its something like 1 MILLION of them have been sold in Australia over the years. There are so many of them, not because they are particularly reliable .. but because Toyota does MASSIVE lease deals with mining companies .. hence Toyota Service Centres on just about every street corner. Toyota certainly beats LR hands down on the number of service centres. Check with ANY Landcruiser service centre and you will find that they are booked out doing repairs to these 'reliable' 4x4's. As far as repairs go, LR is possibly cheaper for repairs than Toyota .. especially when you consider that most LR owners do repairs themselves. There is also a FAR MORE 'social' aspect around LR owners, clubs and forums .. a tremendous amount of help out there from the multitude of LR forums in particular. Where are the Landcruiser forums? Guy in his 200 Series LC opposite me just had his radiator replaced .. a $2,000 job .. due to some 'plastic' part failure and quite a common fault apparently. The fact is BOTH Land Rover and Toyota are NOT as reliable as they used to be years ago, but as far as comfort goes, LR are light years ahead of any LC. If you want to question Land Rover's 'pedigree' .. just look up 'Camel Trophy' on TH-cam. Please direct me to the Toyota's 'equivalent'.

Toyota Land Cruiser all the way range rover are so crap you cant insure them in the uk anymore and they break down here were the roads are good compared to other countries
Let me say this. The Land cruiser is a tough car made for tough roads. However, the driver of the Land cruiser willingly and knowingly made the mistakes which brought the points low. So blame the driver for his poor driving and not the Land cruiser!!!
Dude. Seriously. Get over it. It’s just for fun. I suppose you think the low profile tyres on the Range Rover help it ? The Rangie has amazing tech. It’s a huge help. The ride being IFS and IRS suspension will mean it will handle better on bumps and cornering. That being said. Would I take a Range Rover on a serious expedition ? Hhhmmm. I think not. While they are clearly a more refined vehicle I wouldn’t trust it like a Landcruiser. My 2 cents is. The range is far superior but if reliability is what you’re after I’d go the cruiser with twin lockers every day.
The tech is exactly what rural remote and outback owners hate, too much to go wrong and too few service agents to repair them. Also few 4wd here in Oz aren't modified with local upgrades including appropriate tyres and suspension lifts/upgrades.

@itsshamsi that's exactly what I wanted to say why use and old generation Land Cruiser against a new generation Range Rover that's not realistic at all
The Range Rover is really bad lol, just because its a really expensive 4x4 SUV clearly doesn't make it a off-offroader, the range rover is too short and heavy to do well in off-roading, the places they test off-roading you can go to with a trabant.
In the UK the RR is far preferred due to its unmatched ability to get across wet grass, sticky mud, and through deep farm track ruts and uneven ground, especially when towing trailers. These are the predominant problems here. The RR's tight turning circle is a godsend when negotiating narrow woodland tracks with a farm trailer. Also, the rising and lowering suspension makes putting trailers on the tow hitch far easier. Getting stuck in the mud in the UK is seldom life threatening except for emergency services, but it is a nuisance to have to get the tractor out. So RR's save a lot of time and hassle, and they can also double up as a great motorway cruiser and are fine in town too which saves having to buy a second car. In the UK there is always a Landrover specialist nearby to fix things within a few hours, so the reliability issue is minor. Lastly cost. Excellent secondhand diesel RR Sports are plentiful and cheap as chips in the UK, making them perhaps the most economical and capable 4WD farm transport. This is why most UK country folk have some sort of Landrover.
Finally, someone on TH-cam talking sense about Rangies. I love full fat Land Cruisers to bits but the Range Rover is perfectly designed for the UK (although the amount of theft is frankly ridiculous).
Rangies are more common because they are local. The LC is still better on most of those surfaces you stated. Tires matter a lot for that basic soccer mom stuff
Having owned a FJ80 4.2 TD Landcruiser and currently a Range Rover, The LC was slightly better off road, the electronics help in the RR and having 3 locking diffs on the LC really made it a very capable off roader. My current RR has centre and rear diff locks and coupled with the traction control for the front wheels make off-roading effortless, where the LC you had to take a lot more care with how you drove it. Most weekends you could find me up top of the Pennines in the LC.

Interesting. With many years in Africa, away from towns, I'm used to using 'various Toyota products', so perhaps nice to see just how competent the RR really was. Good point was to consider how it would fare 'in the real world', for months at a time .... Al.

The new land rovers (including the Defender) don't have enough side wall, I think that it's because the rim size can't be reduced because of the big brake calipers and discs.
@@Ian_Wing_Chun_Ado yeah you can't do anything with the new LR cars. They struggle to fit even an Avon AX7 without touching the wings if you go proper offroad. The RR is near impossible to modify unless you're willing to chop serious amounts of body off of it so that's why it's easy to get even old Isuzus and Suzukis to easily beat them offroad. All you need on that stuff is a cheap lift kit and new tyres and they just walk by Range Rovers offroad. My RR struggled even on wet grass if it was an incline, it was too heavy it even with AT tyres on it couldn't do what my older 4x4s could with normal all weather tyres nevermind AT tyres. My only gripe with the proper japanese 4x4s is that they put too much skirting on them so the ground clearance sometimes sucks. Got a lift kit for my GV back about 2009 for £250ish mate and it was better than any 4x4 I've had since bar the LC. My D-max too, all I did with that was lift kit and AT tyres same deal £700 in stuff and it beat everything else out for fun.
Such a good program thank you! The Old Land Cruiser looks like an early 1990's vehicle, it looks like a Japanese vehicle from prior to Japan went into its lost, now coming up to 4 decades. The "Landie" as we call it here in New Zealand is still a Legend! The name "Landie" was once owned by Land Rover for 2-3 Decades and then the Great Brand Toyota took over the affectionate name "Landie" and showcased brilliant Japanese Engineering at its best! It was great in the Southern Alps, McKenzie Country, getting up to the Ski fields, bush tracks hunting etc but it has become too expensive, both these vehicles have been replaced here in New Zealand by the Ford Ranger. Now we can buy 3 Ford Rangers for the price of a Toyota Landcruiser and yes the Ford Ranger is reliable as its Toyota! There is nothing like the original Jeep, and then the Aluminum Land Rover. On Farms in NZ, when the Land Rover's engine crapped out as it did relatively early in its life Cockies (Farmers) here would drop in a GM Holden, or Ford Straight Six Engine and the old beast would go on forever, many are still going and valued on Farms. Japan is now an expensive place to make things, but its Brands always stand for Quality. Toyota will come back as long as Japan only makes top Quality Products which I expect them to do!
Ford trucks are good, but Toyota is much better. Especially here in the United States where they're driving much closer to the million mile mark. I sold my Tundra with just over 250k miles and I only ever replaced the alternater. Hopefully the Ranger holds up to the test if time.

Hi Matt, enjoyed seeing the 4 by 4 joust between these two cars. Would be interesting to explore further; such as how each model/engine system copes with varying qualities of fuel, how easy are they to get competently serviced around the globe. Targeting the luxury market with a high spec system that on paper performs very well, a high performance engine that is very sensitive to varying fuel quality, dependent upon top notch servicing, good traction control but how well do they do in the real world. One of these car manufacturers made (sadly in my view) a decision a while ago to focus on the high end market share at the expense of the broader market with more mass appeal. The result; around the world and outside of modern cities of the developed world, one of these makes is much easier to maintain and readily repair than the other one. And when you're remote or in the middle of the desert you have enough to worry about as it is. London to Cape Town, now that would put them through their paces?

Dude. Seriously. Get over it. It’s just for fun. I suppose you think the low profile tyres on the Range Rover help it ? The Rangie has amazing tech. It’s a huge help. Finally seeing an actual Land Cruiser doing the off road challenge
One important point: Land Cruiser will run up to 1 million miles and won't break down The Range Rover will be in the shop every 2 weeks.

If you compared the Lexus LX500D with the New Range Rover, I'd consider it a fair-ish comparison. Nonetheless, good video!
Lexus is 💩
Are you comparing luxury creature comforts to make it fair? Because this vehicle and the Lexus are identical outside of those luxury creature comforts
@@TruthFLA i bet so.
Compare also LX500D vs Citroen C4 WRC.
@@TruthFLA Kinda, and the lexus is okay at offroading. Though can't say much about the approach and departure angles, they're not great compared to the 300 series. Not sure if they even supply these cars in the UK
I want to see this comparison with both cars having some decent off-road wheels and tires.
Imagine that 22year old LC is having a match with a 2022 LR 😅
And still 22 years ago that lc was beat up by a range rover 🤣
@@mahir6239 But where is that 22year old range rover now 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
@@Sunburnae92 22 years range rover can easily seen on road, they may have a few problems but most problems are from those which doesn't even exist in lc
