      Good clocks ... if you want to KILL it fast. You dont need the ram oc tha thigh, especially since ram chips are the first to fail on a gpu. Also never raise power limits on AMD gpu's, test actual volts - start from stock and keep going lower till you cant reliably hit 1400. Then repeat with 1350, then 1300 and so on. The Idea is to get a good perf/W if you want the GPU to last youa few years.
      EG 1400 at 1100mv is worse than 1350 at 1000mv, which is worse than 1300 at 900mv and so on.
      Personally on polaris, I stick to stock volts on memory and OC it to +150mhz max, downvolt core to 900mv and check to see the max stable oc I can get on core with just 900mv. That will keep the temps and power low, while keeping perf at 95%+ of peak perf.

    • @dans79vet
      @dans79vet 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Richie Dhillon i dont need it to last. Rx570 are cheap and easy to get.
      I also use FPS lock so its not bouncing off 100% usage.
      Runs smooth and better then stock.
      Shadow of the tomb raider benchmark only hit 92% usage at peak, just hit 70’C at 123watt max.
      Been like this for over a year and has no signs of problems.

    • @jakegarrett8109
      @jakegarrett8109 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Richie Dhillon that won’t kill Samsung chips (Hynix or Elpida would be at the limits, I really need a hardware voltage feedback mod so mine will hit over 2000 MHz Elpida Vram). The core will vary, some may hit 1450 easily enough, others may catch fire before they ever hit 1300 MHz. He hasn’t BIOS modded his cards, so it’s not easy to kill them yet (you will always get the occasional dud, you know, like a good chunk of those RTX cards that died for no reason or DOA...)

    • @MatthewKiehl
      @MatthewKiehl 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been able to get very close to that with only a 5% boost to power with my RX570 (and I've seen better clocks than that with only 10-25% more power - but maybe the lottery came in my favor). I altered the fan speed curve though so it targets 60c for 100% fan (not 90 like it came stock). After playing a game for a few hours it reaches about 68c (in 73f ambient). I think there might not be too much risk of damage unless you are getting crazy temps (like 80c - 90c for extended amounts of time). I'm not sure what the cooler is on yours, I have an MSI Armor cooler.

    • @dans79vet
      @dans79vet 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Kiehl mine is msi armor too. Is that +5% to power limit?
      I left it at +50% so when it needs to really boost it can. But as i use a fps lock it stops the card running at max all the time and stays cool and power use similar to stock. I use auto fan curve as its off bellow 50’ and even when running I can barely hear it.
      Everyones use can be slightly different so its good to see what others do.

    Things to consider about this. The RX 570 was a slight process shrink over the 470. Running a 470 BIOS on it with 470 Voltages might cause the symptoms you're seeing there. Secondly, there's the memory modules which may be different between the two cards. Different modules may need different voltages. Basically, the 470 BIOS may have been overvolting which on the 570 GPU caused it to be most unhappy.

  • @Lady_Zenith
    @Lady_Zenith 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Tech Yes you almost killed your card. You cant just flash randomly like that. Yes the first reference 500 bioses were compatible with the reference 400 cards, but you cant take ref 470 and flash custom PCB 570 bios on it. Fit it to work correctly both cards need to have the same GPU, voltage controller and memory. I remember clearly from the mining days that the bioses from cards with Samsung/Hynix memory were not compatible with the Micron ones, etc. And sometimes you can even kill the card if it does not have bios switch, it can get to a state of no post and not even detected on the PCI-E bus. This also explains your weird voltages and power reads, those bioses were made for different voltage controllers and so they received invalid configurations, and set voltage that luckily in your case both did not kill the card and made it stable enough to at least somehow work, but overall you were pretty lucky there.

    When you run the cards 24/7 in an often warm environment you tend to cook-off some of the thermal grease, and cooler paste. This turns into a 'sludge' that can 'drip' along the card and into the cooler. It's not conductive so it's not harmful, but it looks funky and you may have to repaste the cooler to get the most out of the card when gaming.

    Didn't the RX470/80 have issues with pulling too much power from the PCIe ? It's possible that it draws more power than it shows, so it would be interesting to also see a comparsion of total system power draw to rule this out.

      Ignore any software readout in general (I have GPU validations of 35 GHz core frequency...), a million volts sometimes on core (again, you have to question if this is possible), sub-ambient temps like for FX on air cooler (literally physically impossible... HWmonitor still hasn’t fixed the readout since FX doesn’t use Intel temp probe type), and power on RX470 is a joke (I really can pull 300w per card on air benching, it shows 80w.... my readout is from killawatt meter and my HX1200i platinum graphs out power, for quad GPU benching on air I would need 2x PSU since graphics alone would be 1200w and yet software says it’s just 4x80w which is 240w.... yeah that’s not even close!)

    Nice video Brian! it is something I've been thinking about since a long time now. But, it would be great to continue the thought about Software tinkering with MSI Afterburner or Wattman... If you undervolt the 570 Pulse, does it lose too much performance comparing to the consumption loss? Maybe you can try also a BIOS Editor and tweak some voltage/frequency settings: it would be excellent content to complete what you already did!

    • @d0nj03
      @d0nj03 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, strange to see him want better performance per watt and not try power limiting as the very first idea, and just let the newer generation / better die versions / whatever, show what they're made of when using the same power as the lower-tier device.

  • @Xaltar_
    @Xaltar_ 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Of all the 470s and 570s I have tested the best results (power/performance) always come from stock 470s, flashing a 470 BIOS onto a 570 and vice versa doesn't typically have the desired effect. Flashing a 470 vBIOS onto a 570 either does nothing but drop performance or it lowers power consumption but fails to utilize the boost clocks properly and loses significantly more performance than it should. Seeing your power consumption actually go up was a first for me with that first 470 vBIOS you tried. You hit the nail on the head, use Wattman and undervolt the 570 (and 470) as low as you can without losing stability, I also bump the Power Target up by 40% this frequently yields significant power savings and I find the cards actually run better (hit max boost clocks more consistently). Like Brian I picked up a load of ex mining cards and flipped them after tinkering for a few weeks. I have to say, the 470s surprised me, with driver updates and optimizations they really do perform well compared to launch performance.

    I bought a Sapphire RX 470 4GB and a MSI Gaming X RX570 8GB last month, both cards avg. power consumption was 78W just using the "Chill" function. with the 570 the only time it went over 80 was on poorly optimized games (like from UBI Soft) and 90W when stress testing. In fact I hit the silicon lottery with the RX 570 due to the speeds matching my 1060 so I sold my 1060. Now my rig is running much more efficiently, and cooler. The 470 is going to be used in a new build to be sold.

In those two years I went from a RX570 to a RX6600 which runs way better, but with AMD Chill it runs even more efficient depending on the game. For example Doom Eternal in Ultra Nightmare mode @ 1080p only uses 56W avg. while Red Dead Redemption 2 in the city uses a max wattage of 100 (80W avg. elsewhere) got it on 1st level of Quality mode in 1080p that is also having AMD Chill set on Auto. Yeah, somethings up with the Sapphire Cards. My Nitro+ RX 480 8GB OC (1342MHz) runs circles around most RX 580's out the box. With fire strike scores up2 15,600+ (GPU)
    With the Nitro+ RX 480 8GB's they have the Sammy ram and can be clocked a good +100 to +200Mhz (8400MHz to 8800MHz) with +50 on the power limit.
    My GPU OC's to 1425Mhz, pulling away even further. Maybe I got a good card.
    I bought it from a guy that used it, but never gamed with it. He just wanted a silent card for his workstation and the Nitro+ was one of those cards. Lucky me i found it, the moment he posted it, and got for a cool $100 and it looked brand new with the original box and all. I started flashing some v-BIOS cause it had a dual switch and found that the original v-BIOS was the best one for this specific card.
    My card then started acting difficult so my ending result was flashing the main OC v-BIOS to both v-BIOS to get the thing stable again. So i just left it at that. But, the RX 480 8GB OC BIOS, i found is the best one cause it has the highest tjmax and thermal throttle limit. and the best efficiency.
    My card runs at a 75°c flat out stock and with the v-ram at +200 it doesn't effect the temps.
    You called it man. The original BIOS is the best BIOS for these Sapphire cards, Nitro's or Pulse cards. I think my Nitro+ 480 is better than most 580's no doubt.
    Lately, you been bringing the 3770K's and Nitro cards out, its looking like my lab over here. But for those that want to cross flash your Sapphire cards, "DON'T" Especially when Sapphire ED laughs at you for trying.
    Unless you have a 470D, in that case, flash it to unlock the other cores. Keep the good'ol content movin mane. Maybe a revisit with some proper tuning on the RX VEGA's could be next on the list. I got my results ready.

    Are we sure the power difference isn't the extra fan? Maybe remove a fan and test it again? Or are the fans not part of the software power reading? It might be good to verify these readings from the wall. I use my APC to look at power differences, but there are other methods too.

    Feel the RX 470 is too oft overlooked vs the RX 570 on the used market. My thoughts on what you saw might come down to how the Pulse vs the reference VRM are designed and setup, making for a slight difference in how the BIOS is setup to control them.

    I've heard the corrosion is from people blowing an air conditioner on their mining rigs to keep them cool. The heat sinks and other parts get cold enough for water to start condensing on them and they start to corrode.

    Don't forget the R9 380X. Basically the same GPU with 4GB VRAM and 2048 streams. Not to be confused with the R9 380 though. The 380X is quite rare on the used market though.

    Bryan, you mentioned the 570s were mining cards. Did you check whether the vbios was the original or maybe it was already flashed to improve mining performance and/or lower power consumption.

  • @MaximusAdonicus

    Everybody always raves about the RX570 being the best budged card - and it is - but no one ever speaks of the mighty RX470! It's basically the same card with almost the exact performance (few fps difference means nothing!), it's just a model from the previous year. And the thing is, u can usually find used RX470's (especially mining cards) much cheaper than RX570's! I've already bought two RX470's for a good price!

    You could save your original BIOS for the RX 570 and alter the voltages and maybe the clocks for down voltage for the same FPS. I would definitive choose the RX 570 over 470, because they are faster, and you can under voltage them if you want (even possible on the RX 470 ofcourse). :)

Im not planning on doing any overclocking. It will be paired with a Ryzen 3 3200g and 16gb 3000mhz ram. Thank you.

    It would depend on the application for the card, whether I would be overclocking or not and whether or not power consumption would be a factor or not. The rx 570 is a much better overclocker as it has very leaky silicon but the rx 470 is much better performance per watt. I have seen this over multiple cards my self and is just how I think of them, the rx 480 and 580 are the same, although many rx 580 can undervolt very heavily I’d placed at the rx 480 reference clockspeeds
