  • As part of a larger underbody restoration, today I am rebuilding the CV joints on my E34 520i and fitting new GKN Lobro CV Boots.

    whats the worst that could happen if you followed this video to the end, but ahem. lost the position of how everything went back together?

      Sorry to hear that John. Out of habit, I photo and possible label everything so I have something to refer to. Fortunately I got these right and have done about 7000km on them. Hope you got sorted!

    So I replaced my inner boots a couple of weeks ago for mot and all went back together fine, only thing is I'm now getting a clicking noise on decel at about 25-30mph from the passenger side rear and it's driving me mad 😩 I've checked everything else underneath and have a feeling I've put the cv joint on backwards or something... Is that even possible?

      That's an odd one. I haven't encountered this issue, so I'm not the best person to help! My understanding is that the inner race, the cage and the housing are all directional, so they should only go back together one way. Despite marking all of the parts, I accidentally tried to reassemble one CV with the housing the wrong way around and I just couldn't get it into place (which is when I realised my mistake) - there was no question of it going back together, so I doubt this is your issue. It is possible that the complete joint is on the wrong way round, but if this is the source of the clicking, I would wonder why it only happens at a certain speed range. If you look at 8:04, you'll see that there are grooves/lines (off centre) in the cv housing... these should be closer to the ends of the shaft (sorry, I've explained that very badly, I hope you follow). The only other thing I can think of that might cause a clicking would be excessive wear in any of the parts within the CV.

      @@racer-13 yeah I have a felling that that's what happened, I think the whole cv is on the wrong way around... 😅 Well as much as I don't want to, I'll have to take it off and inspect it either way, unless it's my diff making a clicking noise, it's the only thing left. I think I get what you mean with the grooves, I'll check that before I take it apart. Should be able to tell then. Thanks for your help!

    Stuck at the 58 second mark. Mine will not come off. On e28 no amount of pounding has freed the center part from the axle shaft.

      Update: used some penetrating oil and a bigger hammer. Success.

    Any particular reason why there is a smaller and a larger shaft at the end of the video?

    • @racer-13
      @racer-13  ปีที่แล้ว

      They are both the same length! They just look different lengths because I am terrible at videography, photography, lighting, etc. 😀 Both are in the car and working fine for three years now!

      I feel your pain - I'm the world's worst for dismantling things and instantly forgetting how they go back together!! It has been a while, but as far as I can remember, they can only go back together one way. If you pause the video at 2:00, you'll see the how it should look assembled. Note which side is facing up in the video and the position of the outer and inner pieces in relation to each other where I drew the line. Best of luck!
