      Same I stopped driving my mustang in 2012 because I didn't want to f#ck with the heater core and I put a 347 stroker in my 88 BMW 325is and it's more fun to drive and different. Just mustering up the ambitions today and started ripping it apart before I found the video.

      D G hell ya man. It’s the hot season in the Midwest so the heater core is the last thing on my mind, but I’ll get to it by fall. BMW sounds sweeet

    If you have a mint car I suggest you pull the dash slowly and completely. Gives you a chance to clean rewrap the harness in cloth tape in places its come loose, clean the dash frame and replace dry rotted fasteners. Quick jobs are ok for beaters

      The last time I did one was in 98, but I believe we pulled the whole dash and did not need to disconnect the a/c. So if you have more time than money, that's also the way to go.

      Never understood the "quick" mentality,90% of the time it ends in disaster, i understand a "alternator, a radiator, only car, gotta get to work in the morning situation" but a job like a heater core, ill take 3 days if i have to, plenty of people that can take me to work if need be,i see these videos all the time,to each his own i guess, i do have to say my favorite is cutting up the trunk area on a Mustang to change the pump,Ive done so many i can drop the tank in 20 minutes and thats taking my time,not sure why you would want to cut your car up.

    I once Installed the whole heater box/evaporator assembly in a 1980 Mustang from another Mustang because mine didn't have air conditioning. It took me three days because I had to remove all the dashboard and install the new ducts and a/c controls. Was very careful because the plastic dash was fragile and was afraid to break any part of it. Had to prop it up at different stages so it wouldn't break from hanging by a few screws. As I removed the screws, I would label them with masking ape because not all of them are the same; length, thickness or type of threads. Power drivers are great but when you are reinstalling some screws, you should start them by hand because the driver may strip or crossthread the fasteners before you are aware of it.

    Done it four times over 24+ yrs on my 87. Got it down to under 4 hours, and never disconnected the AC. Drill with a flex shaft was a time saver! Side note, I knew a Ford AC tech that could do 3-4 in a day. He had all the shortcuts down.

      @@bryanroupe8646including the original, I guess it is the 4th. I've pulled the dash a couple more times changing interior color and the evaporator. I drove it daily 306k miles over 24 years. Did the first one at about 6 yrs. That one only lasted like 3-4 yrs. The 3rd one failed after less than 2yrs, cheap parts store POS. The next one (Ford part) was good for another 5-6 yrs before I changed the whole
      AC system to r134a. A couple of years later, the motor blew. I hope it is still good after sitting the past 9 yrs!

    The electric ratchet looks handy enough for me to need one. I like the way he works. I'm same way tearing down takes longer put it back together. AWESOME JOB

      Power tools make a HUGE diff, and those 1/4 and 3/8 powered ratchets are plenty cheap

    Dam i did my 87 GT convt. Changed out the heater core but it took long long time i guess it was my first time doing it? I didn't have you tube to help out like a day's thank God for TH-cam 🐺

      @@cristiangonzalez8527 take photos with your phone for reference. If you have AC, the evaporator does not have to be evacuated/removed. Move aside enough to get to the bolts behind the evap bracket.

      bob potter I accidentally already evacuated it last year. Didn’t know any better haha. Couldn’t for the life of me disconnect the ac line though at the firewall. Had to disconnect the front part of it

    Man this brings back memories...
    Had to do this back in '89,, to my girlfriends/now wife's '85 hatchback....Ford Dealership said they'd need the car for a week to replace it... Me, with some help from her Father, did it in two days...All handtools, with NO Manual to help...Had to figure it out as we went....Talk about fun...... Must have done something right,, It's Never been changed since....Still got both of them, The wife and the Car..... Oh,,, and back then,, Freon was a Buck Fifty a can at K-Mart...lol
    Thanks for showing a faster way of doing this....'Cause I know it's only a mater of time till I'll be changing it again....

    I am glad the 86 dash comes out without touching the center console. Finally a 4 eye issue that is easier. i have changed mine twice in 25 years took 5 hrs the 1st time about 3 hrs the 2nd. Thanks for uploading. alot of people needed to see this!

    One thing you forgot. Dover is a boss with the foxbodys,but anyone else,do not just toss the screws anywhere. Separate and put them back where they go.

    Nice I have had to do this on every fox that I've owned. I also replaced the the blower on a few of them since I was there & had it all apart anyways.

    I had to do this on my old mustang years ago. It seemed like a terrible job, but looking at the drawings I came up with a shortcut and did the job in less than an hour. Take out the glove box and pull down the carpet behind the glove box and you'll see a thick plastic. Take a box cutter or other cutting tool and cut out a square around where the heater core should be and pull the plastic piece out. Voila, there's the heater core. Can't remember exactly what it looked like, but I was able to pull out the old core and install the new one easily. I put the plastic piece back in, glued and duct taped it in place, put the carpet and glove box back, and was done.

    Thankfully i was able to flush out my heater core with some very light pressure from the garden hose. Saved me from having to take the dash out again. Same with my sn95.

    People make a fox heater core out to be a much bigger job than it really is. Couple hours at the most, and that’s taking your time not to break or lose anything. It can also be done without dumping the A/C.

    On beaters, 2-3 hours. On clean survivors 5-6 hours because I replace dash clips, make sure the harness doesn’t rattle and trim pieces don’t come loose. Not a fun job but years ago when we discovered not yanking the whole dash life changed for us lol. There’s more shortcuts but those are for the OG’s to keep very hush hush.

    It’s obvious this guy has done this several times. If you are not a professional at fox body dash assembly don’t get disappointed if it takes you a little more time that guy is about as good as it gets on knowing exactly what to remove and what tool it takes is usually half the battle
    But showing you can do it is motivating

    First thing i did buying my Fox was a burnout...that followed with a burning my foot after hot AF coolant spilt all over my thin shoe. Since then bypassed the heater core and been like that ever since. After seeing this video i think I’m ready to tackle it lol

    I lucked out with a ‘79 I owned. It did not have A/C, only a heater core.
    To replace it:
    1. Drained the radiator.
    2. Unscrewed the glove box and remove.
    3. Unscrew the plate that covered the heater core and remove.
    4. Unscrew hose clamps connected to the heater core and remove.
    5. Slide out the heater core.
    6. Insert new heater core and reverse above process.
    Did not have to remove the dash.
    Thinking about it, what saved me the most, no air bag.
    Not saying air bags are unnecessary.

    The type things nightmares are made of. I can't imagine how it can be done so quickly, what a talent for a real tough job. Have done it on older model and it was no fun and would never like to do it again.

    I bought my fox (first car) with busted heater core, I took it to a couple of mustang guys and the two of them had the car back to me in two hours. Cost $200, which wasn't a bad deal. That was in '04, now I'm sure I can do it in 2-4 hours by myself since I have tons more experience working on stuff...
    They didn't mess with the AC lines either, it still worked and I know they sure didn't recharge it.

    I have a 84 mustang I've put 3 in mine in last 24 years, 1st time took me 2 days and lots of bad words. 2nd time I cut the front on the heater box where the heater core sits and made a cover for it so I dont have to drain my ac or unbolt the box from the firewall now. Last one I put in only took 45 mins.

    I've done this twice (which took forever) and I never removed the AC drier...and I don't remember what the consequences were.

    Hey from Ontario Canada ! MY 85 fox burst the heater core while mid-track in the quarter , shifting at 6200 rpm.... I think it was cause I just installed a new High volume Weiand water pump and the extra water pressure made it Balloon. Next time I'm gonna get the standard volume pump !

      I did a similar stunt.. LMR has a restrictor fitting the goes in the heater feed hose to reduce the pressure. Be sure to get one or make your own. See jrichker at www.stangnet.com..

    Had mine done about 7 years ago, then it sat for a long time. I'm slightly worried it may be going bad again. None of those symptoms yet though. PS - Dover is FAST!

    * tech tip . When changing the heater core ,rub some white lithium grease over the heater core tubes . It makes your instal of heater hoses much easier especially with new stiff heater hoses . Also when replacing the hoses instead of playing captain destructo and pulling the old off and possibly damaging a other wise good heater core ,take a razor blade and slice through the old heater hose and it will be a breeze to remove the old stock in hose with little chance of damage to the heater core . You can also use lith grease (a light coat ) on all coolant hoses (upper /lower hoses ,bypass hoses,heater hoses etc ) for easy instal and removal since you are likely the next guy to service the vehicle.

    I've got a 4-eye dash with OEM air conditioning. It's different from Aero foxbodys but still a pain due to the AC evaporator. Heater core works for now, but for how long? I had to do one on my old 1986 Mercury Grand Marquis and it wasn't too fun(the original looked old, crusty and brass/alum just like the one you pulled from this Foxbody FYI). Lots of scraped knuckles and F-bombs, lol. Hope I don't have to do this for a while...

    Is there a way to make a "door" in the engine bay where you can just remove the hoses, slide the old one out and put the new one in?

    If you’re replacing the heater core, would you recommend replacing the evaporator too since everything is pulled apart already?

    My buddy said that's the first part on the assembly line when they built the foxbody the rest of the car was built around it LOL

    Exactly how you should bang out a heater core. I'm going out on a limb here but I'm willing to guess this cars been under water at one point? I'm also going to go out on another limb and say Dover is 6'4 or 6'5? He's crawling around a little fox interior

    I replaced mine taking my time in about 4 hours and now I have a squeak whenever I hit a bump, which there are thousands of them in Houston. I don't want to remove my whole dash to find out what it is either. I've tried moving everything by hand and hear nothing. Only when I drive. I don't have another driver so that I could pinpoint it out.

    I had a 89 lx hatch that this happened to and I live in Wisconsin. Need less to say I stopped driving the car in the winter. Haha

    I noticed that speedo cluster was not removed. Was there enough slack for the speedo cable to move that far out?

    Ask Dover if he'd come to Tennessee to do mine. I bought a car that unfortunately had a bad one and I didn't realize that before I purchased.

    I used to believe in always putting in a motorcraft heater core when replacing it until my last foxbody that went through THREE!! I flushed the coolant, replaced all battery cables, grounds, new hoses with restrictor and still didn’t help. Every year it would start leaking. Put a spectra aluminum heater core in and not a single issue after that. I’m a tech by trade so a heater core is no big deal but having to do it every year was getting annoying really fast.

    What was he using a 1/4 drive ratchet cause I was thinking about about buying 1! I see a lot of people have a really hard time getting that front bolt out of the heat core cover! I was going to do mine in September but I had to have heart surgery good thing about mine I have a 87 coupe it's a 4cyl car I only drive it about 20 miles a day when the motor or transmission goes up going to drop a V8 in it but I am going to change the heater core while the 4cyl is still in it! That a/c canister u don't have to remove the lines it has a clamp around it loosen it up u can slide it up or down to get to the heater box bolt behind the bracket! But Dover in them it's nothing to recharge the a/c system! But I am glad I seen this Video I was going to take the whole dash out seats cluster unplug all those wires by the steering column! Dover is the man he knows his shit I wish I had a friend like Dover lol! Thanks for the awesome video Dover!
