Full heater core replacement (the easy way) on a 2007 GMC Sierra and similar models

  • Today we have a video of the full replacement process for a heater core on a 2007 GMC Sierra classic body style. The procedure is the same for many other GM trucks:
99-07 Chevrolet Silverado classic body style
99-06 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL
    99-06 Cadillac Escalade (EXT, EVS)
    99-06 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban
    99-06 Chevrolet Avalanche
03-07 Hummer H2 (dash and firewall are a little different but the heater box is the same.)
It is easier than it looks, the dash has to come out, but it comes out as an assembly and only needs to be pulled back, not totally removed.

Saw a video by Car Wizard and he spent crazy time on how hard the job is to do, Vehcor in this video just does it and isn't there to hype how tough it is, rather that it is doable. Different mindset altogether.

I had the dash disassembled this far on my '03 Yukon. What you did in two hours took me just over six. But if I did it again I bet I could do it in...just over six. So much fun watching a pro do this.

Hands down the best video for the dash removal. Of all the videos I watched, this is the most straightforward and quickest way to go about it. I have an '02 suburban LT, so the only difference was taking out the seats and center console first, then the rest was the same. Thank you for saving me so much time and headache. This video is the best.

Did mines about two years ago on my 2000 Tahoe. As it was my first time doing this I took my time. About 12 hours total (taking photos, resting and learning when to walk away and calm down :-). If I have to do it again I figured I could do it in half that time. I made sure to replace everything else in there as well (evap core, actuators) since I had everything apart. I was not going back in there!

Heater core blew on my 2000 gmc sierra look at a few videos on TH-cam and yours seemed the cleanest and easiest way to do it . After putting off for a couple of week I final managed to dive into it, and following you step by step made it not so confusing. Thank you for making these videos did it in about 6 hours including re taking out the heater unit because I trapped the antenna. I had no friends to help me as well . Not the hardest thing I’ve done but no walk in the park either . Your video help a lot

Did that a few years ago on my trusty 2000 model. Took me 8 hours, maybe 9 but has a full center console. I didn't disconnect the steering shaft or shift cabke which I see now why I couldnt pull the dash completely free. I pulled it back at an angle to gain access to the HVAC box, pulled the box back as well and barely had enough room to remove and replace the heater core and only because the heater core pipes actually swivel. Pain in the ass. Next time, heaven forbid, I,'ll pull the dash all the way out. There wasn't a video years ago showing the tricks. Great tutorial as usual. AAA PLUS!

Remembering the really old days on some cars when you could change the heater core from under the hood. I'm sure they could design it now so you could change through the glove box opening, but that would take intelligent thinking.

I had to use a bucket and step stool when removing the dash, but it was a lot more difficult getting it back in (no friends either, by myself) because It dropped and angled lower with the bucket. Great video documenting all the steps of taking the dash out. Thank you. Wouldn't this a great time to blow all the trash out of the AC evaporator and replace that fresh air door actuator hidden behind the air box that always dies at about 180000 miles. While you’re in there a new blower motor and thermocouple blower speed control would seem to make sense as well since you have to be a contortionist with tiny hands just to be able to reach those things later. Cheers

I will say that the hardest part about replacing the heater core in a 82 to 93 S10 is getting to the top screws on the cover. I've replaced the core in my 91 ext cab twice. I found out the hard way to stay away from the aluminum heater cores in these trucks. It only took 3 parts stores to find the correct unit.

I have a 2002 Sierra and I have partially disassembled the dash to replace one actuator. Now I have to do it again to replace another. So I really felt your pain when you said they come bad from the factory. This will be the third one I have done and I hope that’s all of them.

Thanks for the weekend surprise video! I have a 2002, 300K mile Suburban which I bought new. I live in Los Angeles so I'm not sure the heater even still works. But, I am moving to Pittsburgh in 6 months when our new house is done, so I am saving this video just in case I find out next winter that the heater core is kapuut.

Quick tip on those actuators, probably mostly for commenters. The grease they use on the gears inside eventually gets on to the rheostat (or variable resistor or what ever it’s called) clean that up with alcohol, along with any other loose grease, put a little, little dab of dialectic grease on the gears, re assemble it and put it back in, that has been my problem with everyone of those gm hvac actuators. After that they work like a charm.

Amazing and thanks for documenting a real video unlike the butcher job the others posted, wish me luck, I am tackling my 2006 Chevy Silverado Crew Cab, I am going to replace the Heater Core, Blower Motor, Actuator, AC whatever the crap is called as mine is leaking, tired of the Tire Plus folks sniffing with dye for a month. CLICK I love it :) BTW I am off to get a milk crate from 7-Elven !!!

Much easier changing the core on that then in a Dodge. Looks like you might have done it once or twice. I am surprised that you don't have the extra joint between the wrist & elbow to get to that lower bolt. It is an optional accessory for working on Fords. Great job Scott.

This is a much easier way to get to the evap, than disassembling the whole dash, like I saw on another vid. I've got an 02 2500hd Duramax, with floor shift transfer case, so should be pretty much the same, without the center console.

I love the video and you did a great job. But for GM to have you take the dash apart to replace a heater core is ridiculous. And some engineers were paid well for this. I have had chevy cars all my life but in my old age now no way. I need to do this on a 2006 GMC Sierra. So I guess o have to set aside a day to get it done. Again great job!!

I saw your thumbnail and my first thought was "rut roh" lol
I remember back in the day when changing a heater core was an hour job at best. 2 heater hoses, some silicone sealant, a couple of wires on the fan and a gear clamp was about the gist of it. Easily and readily accessible from under the dash in the passenger footwell.
