    This is my orchestral cover of Tarm Ruins from Legend of Zelda, Oracle of Seasons. I have been planning for years to do a cover of this song. It would seem that I have really made a dent in my VGM cover / remix / arrangement to-do list! Not quite sure what will be next. Once again, I remixed a rather simplistic theme and attempted to make it more complex without compromising the zen elegance of the original. The original was composed by Minako Adachi.
    I got the picture from a Skyrim mod. (Link: www.nexusmods.c...)

    THIS. THIS is what Breath of the Wild was missing! I fully understand and appreciate what they were going for overall with the game's minimalist soundtrack, but I still think they could have given at least a few of the game's many ruins some music like this. Like the giant underground temple, or that one dark place north of the korok forest.

    • @RebeccaETripp
      @RebeccaETripp  5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The Lost Woods/Maze theme and Shrine themes were good, traditional dungeon themes IMO, but a lot of the piano music in the ruins and whatnot were just kind of depressing.

    i've put that in the back ground while i was working and i cried out of nostalgia, zelda oracle of season (and ages) has always been my favourite and my first ever zelda game even tho i first played it in 2012, i remember how long i spent in the living room, playing this game on the tv (the box had somehow a way to run up to n64 games) while my parents where wating for me to get bored of it ti have the tv back and how frustrating the puzzle were yet how happy i felt when i finished one, i haven't reached this place yet due to the fact that i was 6 at the time but i'm doing both games in a row right now because i remember that i had it on my 3ds, but i remember reaching the entry of this place, asking myself how to open it and just falling asleep on the couch of the living room after a day of school

      That's an incredibly beautiful, and kind of powerful memory. Even though I wasn't there, I almost feel like I was! My best memories of this game also involve me sitting in the living room after school, and feeling a sense of my family's presence.

    this hits my soul so deeply... what does Oracle games represents for you, Rebecca? For me, Oracle games represents my childhood, playing them in my house, when I was 9 y/o and talking about my discoveries on them with my best friend at school... sharing secrets with him (Felix was the name of my friend, we start our friendship when we discovered both of us had these games). This is nostalgia. Thank you for this tune.

    • @RebeccaETripp
      @RebeccaETripp  4 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Beautiful memories! For me, it represents a "safe" place. I would walk home from school, flop down into the comfiest chair in our living room (beside a glass sliding door which looked out onto a forest) and turn on my GBC. I'd forget about my homework and just play for an hour, haha.
      One memory particularly sticks out when I was playing this game in the autumn. It was still mostly light out, just about to turn to evening, and I was sitting in that chair with this beautiful green and gold lamp glowing beside me, drinking tea with milk and honey from my favourite cup. My parents were in the kitchen beside me stirring an autumn stew. The smell of the poplar leaves outside mingling with the stew was so cozy. It makes me nostalgic. :'3 I sometimes experience dreams where I'm trying to get back to that moment!

      @@s3rg10_92 Well, to me, the Oracle games represent a time of my life when I was 12 years old. Before my mother passed away, before most of what my childhood was lost to hardship; my stepsister and I were very much into the Zelda franchise, I introduced her to it with "A Link to the Past" and "Ocarina of Time", before I lost contact with her.
      Besides my memories before life's hardships, the Oracle games were interesting to me as they took place outside of Hyrule and were not focused entirely on Ganondorf or Ganon, but on understanding the troubles of distant lands. I liked the thematic nature of the games, as a kid, I could easily get lost in my imagination, placing myself in Link's adventures when my family would travel to the mountains or coast. In particular, I found the Oracle of Seasons to be my favorite and have a similar memory of Autumn, my favorite season. Both Oracle games had a unique feeling to them, as if there was a little more magic or lost history to both lands.

I wish I could read about your creative process, about how you came from an interesting but very simple sounding game theme and envisioned this version. Almost as if it drunk directly from the past experiences and knowledges of those who built and lived through ancient civilizations.

    I think the reason I loved Oracle of Seasons so much was because it felt jam-packed with interesting stuff to do.
    It couldn't have amazing graphics or super high quality cutscenes or music simply because it couldn't. And we all know this, but It's clear as glass that it never had to.
    I'm not saying the game's without it's many flaws, I'm playing the game for a second just recently after finishing. For example, You can't get, say the mirror shield without playing Oracle of Ages. Though when you think about it, It could be a lot worse when looking at Pokemon.
    I liked Zelda 1 because of it's simple yet understandable nature and gameplay, and A Link's awakening was certainly a good comeback for the 2D series, But I like Oracle of Seasons because it's a little more...gimmicky.
    Before I return to that though, I'd like to say that I'm of the opinion that all Zelda games have a great deal of originality to them. likewise, they're all with a gimmick themselves. The difference between Ocarina of Time, and Skyward Sword, is an obvious difference. But even A Link between worlds, and A Link to the past have a lot of difference. Even though they're to me, the most similar in spectrum. I do have one odd outlook on the games with that idea though. The 2D games seem a lot more varied in...Something. I can't name it. Zelda 1, and A Link's awakening are pretty similar, Phantom hourglass is similar to Wind Waker, And Four Swords is really similar to Four Swords Adventure. But Adventure of Link really stands on it's own two feet, Spirit Tracks is all about trains, Four swords/Adventure/Triforce heroes are a trio of games with the same theme, but with something that all the 3D games don't have. That being multiplayer, and teamwork, The Minish Cap sees the player turning small and navigating the world with an ants view, (making it my favorite) A Link Between Worlds's gimmick is turning flat against the wall and solving for the slightly redeveloped world that came with it, and the Oracle games saw the player changing seasons and turning time back and forth.
    Not that using time has never been done before, but I haven't played Oracle of Ages yet, so I can't say it's good or bad. But I will say this. Oracle of Seasons felt unique because it touched on something that had to do with time, but without it. Seasons to alter the environment has only been used once in the series. And to sum it up, I think they did a good job. Not only that, but the game had a lot of things in it that I love about The Oracle games, and A Link's awakening. Such as the tightly fit world, the Trade quest, Keys to open the dungeons rather than big mini adventures to get inside, the Characters, and that uniqueness that everyone gives A Link's awakening and Majora's Mask especially. Oracle of Season's and Ages don't take place in Hyrule like those two previously mentioned games. You're on a quest to Same Din and Nayrue not Zelda, and I love it because of that. Thanks for reading this.

It may not be super hard to improve the sound quality of a GB track, but you weren't content on improving or even perfecting--you brought multiple emotional dimensions to the piece that so smoothly complete your audio picture. I'm hard pressed to determine which is the better of the two Oracle games but if I had to choose it would probably Seasons. There is just a massive sense of adventure and scope to it. And the fact this game is more focused on action and combat helps though there are still clever puzzles strewn about as well that I enjoy. I think Seasons strikes a better balance between puzzle solving and combat. Ages felt like it had to make almost everything a puzzle right down to traveling and some of the puzzles like the light the tiles puzzles got repetitive. Also second to last main dungeon. Nightmare to navigate. It's basically Water Temple but more difficult and in 2D. Good lord. Why? There is one thing Ages did do incredibly well and that was the story. The villain despite being an accomplice to Ganon like the one in Seasons could have done well enough as a threat on her own. There was no need for Twinrova. But the fact that a follower of Ganon could do something on a large scale as she did to disrupt history and cause reality to fall apart through tampering with the past makes her efforts feel more direct compared to the Seasons villain who just sits on his butt like a typical bad guy waiting for Link to come to him and just has his minions guard the essences. At least the boss fight with him was challenging and his true form is a dragon which is very epic. I just wish more was done with him. As for Twinrova and Ganon. Handled very well. I like how even from the dead Ganon finds ways to menace far off lands with his followers. And Twinrova being the active threat that brings both games together culminating into the final battle with them and their dark master. Nothing short of brilliant.

    I wonder what you would think of a Tarm Ruins remix that features the main tune itself rarely, mysteriously appearing and disappearing, with the general background ambience being a very slowed down version of Tarm Ruins, because the main theme is what is desired, and the Ruins are so old and mysterious the truth of them fades in and out in the same way as the seasons change. I do like this a lot, and I love Tarm Ruins more than any other single track in the Gameboy Zeldas. However it seems difficult to capture its mystique. Even the dual-sounds used to orchestrate the main unique sound of Tarm Ruins I have not heard used in such a way anywhere else.
