Unfortunately, I think it might have had to do with releasing so late on the GBC. Because imo they're much better as a whole than LA. Nintendo, for some reason, really doesn't want to acknowledge the Capcom games, but I've wanted these remade for going on a decade.

Too many people saw Capcom and not Nintendo and figured " not my zelda". Unfortunately that's ignorant, but one day those people will pick it up and realize just how damn wrong they were.
If it shows up on NSO one day and it gets millions of plays then it might have a shot.

@@Jack_MxM I have a different opinion. The original GB also used anime artstyle in the beginning and the end as well as the snes iteration (in the booklet at least). The game graphics were due to technical limitations though and the style they chose for the LA remake is a mere callback to those graphics but with a twist. I don’t think it is supposed to represent anything lore wise it is just an artistic way to transfer LA into a truthful modern interpretation.

These games got me into the Zelda series when I was in third grade.
    But
Not because of the games themselves. If anyone remembers scholastic book fairs, there was one year sometime around 2002-2003 where they sold an Oracle of Ages and Seasons choose your own adventure book (I swear I'm the only one who had these because I've NEVER seen them mentioned on the internet). I thought the main character's name was Zelda and was obsessed with getting those books. They worked as a guide as well, even had a page dedicated to the trading quest going through what Link traded to who. I did eventually get to borrow one of the games from my friend but never actually beat it. But I've been a huge Zelda fan since

I never found any "creative fatigue" in Oracle of Ages. In fact, the dungeons in ages seem much, much better than those in Seasons. Many puzzles were just brilliant. In seasons everything was "kill stuff to open door, repeat". I am exaggerating but not by a lot.

    • @chazon1780
      @chazon1780 3 ปีที่แล้ว +62

I think that was deliberate, actually. Oracle of Seasons emphasized combat while Ages focused on puzzles. Considering Din in Seasons is named after the Goddess of Power and Nayru, the Goddess of Wisdom, it makes sense.

@@Alfonso88279 "what else could he get wrong?" the part about music. Highly subjective obviously, but that's not how it was portrayed in the video. And that's pretty much the point for me, the interest, that's what I respect the most about this genre of videos. If you state how something makes you feel, that's great, interesting, cool. When you put that as the Truth, then I'll probably have a problem with you sooner or later.
The game is not perfect by a lot, but his criticism didn't touch most of the real problems the games have, that's all.

But they figured out pretty early that creating a password system that worked to link 3 games would have been a logistical nightmare on the Gameboy Color, and since that was kinda the entire point, they just took some of the ideas they had for that third game and shuffled them into Seasons and Ages. Happened early enough in development that if they wanted to complete the trilogy now, they’d need to just make a new game from scratch in the same engine they used for remaking the others…which I’d love to see.

I... can't agree regarding dungeon design. Honestly, did we play the same games? It's like you looked at it and came to the exact opposite conclusion.
Oracle of Ages' dungeons are complicated and fucking rad, they remind me of Majora's Mask. Absolutely incredible designs, where you'd mess with the whole dungeons and affect things within it. Like, they unarguably have themes and unique identities in them, it's kind of why they're so beloved among those who have played them...
Edit: Like the dungeon you have to deal with in the past AND present to complete both halves.
Or the dungeon where you have to manipulate four different crystals to move between the different floors of sand.
Or the one where it's the four elements, and you have to beat each elemental trial to get the necessary keys to proceed to the final areas.
Or a DUPLICATE VERSION OF THE WATER DUNGEON where you have to raise and lower the jabu jabu's water levels!
Or the one where you have to cool certain areas of lava to get around, and switch-hook things onto certain places.

I sincerely don't know how Oracle of Seasons and Ages aren't more popular. Vastly available through emulation, amazing game design, a lot of content, being a Zelda game... I love this, played 100% of both games (with all rings) in the 3DS Virtual Console. I recommend they to every Zelda fan I know. Thank you for the amazing video!

These were my first video games way back when I played on my mom’s save file because I was all of 4 or 5 at the time. I will forever love Din and Nayru from these games and when I think of the song of storms I always think of that man next to the windmill. I’m so happy to find somebody talking about games so important to me.

It was the Summer of 2002 and my best friend had Oracle of Ages and I had Oracle of Seasons. I watched him play, and he watched me play, and then we linked the games. I later on played the other Oracle game myself. This summer is still on my mind. I remember it vividly.

I loved these games. They were a lot of fun and memorable. Oracle of seasons i liked the most. The seasons and the Subrosians were awesome. Oracle of ages was amazing, but I always got stuck on the Goron ridge like the NPCs weren't responding to anything. I thought it was a glitch, but also I could've done something wrong too

There are actually 18 dungeons because of the Hero's Cave and it's alternate forms, depending on which game you play.
Also I disagree with what you say about the dungeon design and music, but it might be difficult for you to understand their quality if you didn't play the games until years later.

another excellent retrospective, and definitely the best ive ever seen someone articulate what really makes these games feel different from links awakening. ive played through all three multiple times but had never really been able to put my finger on just how much more demanding the oracle games are on your memory/spatial aptitude...they really are special in how much closer they get to the original zelda, especially compared to every other handheld game in the series

The music was by Kyoko Nakamura and Minako Adachi of Kiyohiro Sada's group Pure Sound. Sada worked on many Konami and Natsume games like Top Gun, Abadox, and S.C.A.T. Adachi worked on many popular series, most notable the Summon Knight games.
Sada also told me there was no MIDI on the Game Boy; all the music and sound effects had to be coded by hand in binary code.

These games are hands down my favorite Zelda titles. I would beat them every summer, sometimes again and again, since the linked quest can continue on to the Triforce quest.
Did you know there's not one, but at least two references to these games in Undertale? There's a chasm a blue chicken takes you across very strenuously, and a table with "A powerful-looking bracelet" on it, before revealing "Oh, it's just a croissant."
There's a reason these games are so beloved by its fans, and it's no coincidence that BOTW is such a hit with its director coming from them. It's only a shame that Nintendo doesn't give them any recognition.
