IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: foot candle meters measure perceived light intensity to our eyes, while PAR meters specifically measure light wavelengths that plants use to photosynthesize. I am measuring in foot candles, as opposed to PAR, because it is the most common unit of light measurement for houseplant growers. PAR meters are very expensive compared to foot candle meters. Using foot candles to measure light for ornamental houseplants like aroids will suffice. Aroids in particular are highly adaptive to a wide range of light conditions. PAR is more appropriate if you’re flowering and breeding plants, or growing edible plants indoors, because it will give you a more specific light reading for optimal growth. Hope the video was helpful!
Thank you!
"this one's growing in the tree trunks a$$, guys.." cracked me up good 🤣 lol
Hehe “crack”🍑😜🤪
😂😂😂
Your chaotic excitedness is a vibe ❤
Thanks! Shenanigans always😜
I’d like everyone to take notice of how beat up wild aroids are, we baby our aroids too much
Oh yes, they definitely go through the wringer!
such a great idea with measurements in nature since a lot of people only give watts of lights instead of foot candles or PAR
It certainly puts our household light conditions into perspective 😁
😂 9 foot candles! Thanks for this video! So great to see houseplants in their habitats!
I’m clearly a pro at this😎😂thanks for watching!
I appreciate this video so much. Thanks for braving rain and mosquitoes to educate us ❤
Absolutely! I’d do it all again!
Keep in mind guys it was overcast. But sun and clouds move, at spot where 300 was measured can be 1200 or 2000 fc 1 hour later. Those plants are also getting dappled sunlight when sky is clear. Things can change quite quickly. However, there is +- 200 rainy days on average so those numbers can be measured quite often i guess but thats not what those plants are getting all the time, keep that in mind.
Yup, the light is fluctuating all the time. Most of the year Panama has a rainy season where it rains every day so these plants are used to overcast light😉
@@plantgayforlife yea thats what i meant by "200 rainy days per year". Funny that we have a plant group chat and we were analyzing anthuriums on the photos from rainforest where it seems some species live in fkn DARK and i was saying "damn i should go there to measure light" and you posted video few hours later haha.
This is a great video!!! It’s amazing to see this beautiful plants in their natural habitat. You’re very lucky to have experienced this !!! Thanks so much for this Jake 🥰
You ROCK! Truly amazing! I am glad I am on the right track with my Anthurium I keep them in lower light and this just backs up what I am doing. WOOT!
Thank you! Glad to hear it! Anthuriums are such great houseplants😁
So unhinged but so awesome 😂😂
Jake you’re the f’ing man!!! Thank you for showing us the rain forest I ❤❤❤ it. And I’m looking at your light readings and I’m like I may not need all these freaking grow lights 🤔
Appreciate that!😊 Aroids are great cuz the way can grow in a wide range of light conditions. Just remember that less light means water them less too😉 but you can definitely experiment! My pendant anthuriums have grown 2 ft long leaves while getting maybe 100 fc when I measured the light hitting their leaves!
"im saving the rain forest one leaf at the time m***** f*****" you won my sub hahahaah
Haha! Thank you! Welcome😁
This 😂😂😂😂
Omg I love you, I was stoned recently thinking “I wonder how much light all these plants get in the wild, anyway?” And I thought it’d be great to run around the rainforest with a light meter. So I searched “how much light plants in the wild” and you popped right up! Sad I hadn’t found your stuff sooner but happy to be a new subscriber 💃
Thank you! Welcome to the mess!😜😁
support your work sweetie❤
please continue this as a series, will be amazing. i need to know the different soil compositions next and the different temps and humidity levels (microclimates)..etc please :D also measure more light please :D
Awesome video! So glad TH-cam recommended your channel to me. Entertaining and informative, what a gem ♡
So glad you found my channel! Welcome to the hot mess 😜
I’m sure this was somewhere where this would be prohibited, but man would it be tempting to take cuttings
It was private property, not a trail, so I was really pushing my luck just by being there😅
That would be simply magical to go and see were all my favorite houseplants came from! You two are so fortunate to have gotten to go there! This was a very entertaining look at the jungle lol
Can’t wait to go back!!
Amazing insights!! Thank you 🙏🏼 Which rainforest is this at?
Panama!
Finally, it's uploaded, and it's exactly what I am wishing for but not expecting! Wanted to know the parameter in situ and you are doing what a lot other people like me wanted to. Thank you so much for sharing this trip with us.
And would like to ask do you ever happen to see a waroqueanum in situ in other video of yours?
My pleasure! I haven’t seen a Warocqueanum since they only grow in Colombia. But it’s next on my bucket list for vlogging since there are sooo many amazing aroids endemic to Colombia! 😃
@@plantgayforlife well, will always watch your new upload. Be safe in your exploration out there.
Thank you so much for this Jake! I measure my lighting to help me place my plants and this is the exact info I needed 💚
Measuring light is always the best way to go! As our eyes adjust to the low indoor light, seemingly bright light on a windowsill may be inadequate for some plants. Glad it was helpful!😃
Haha! have to say i am your big fan!! today i laughed like a drain when you said it's no light!! hahhah
You are too nice! Thank youuu😃🙏
Great info again, so appreciate it! I mean one of those meters!
My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed!
You did some very, very helpful work for everyone on light levels😌🙌💖Thank you! ! And even in the trees ass hole😂🙌I loved watching!
Appriciate that! And now we know plants in nature can even grow ‘where the sun don’t shine’🍑🌳😂
Thanks, 1000x!!!!!!!
wow!
Awesome video!!!!!!!! Thank u
🤗
This was such a cool thing to see, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I feel like looking at these conditions we have no excuse to keep killing plants. I think we fuck with them too much is my guess.
It might be the watering that’s more consequential for aroids than light🤔
Ok see this is the most helpful info ever.
Appreciate that😄
Brilliant light observations!💡 If you take requests, I nominate Rio for your next video shoot ( I envision you dancing your way down the Copacabana Promenade designed by none other than Roberto Burle Marx) Then you could do a deep dive of why there's over 50 different plants named Burle Marxii and maybe tour his home/ nature preserve/ philodendron collection/ UNESCO world heritage site???? A girl can dream 😻 Love your work Jake
Omg as a painter and lover of architecture and landscaping, doing a deep dive on burle marx would be Disneyland for me! Definitely on the bucket list now! Have you been?
@@plantgayforlife I haven't been to Rio myself . I was just thinking you would do justice to the topic being such a visual, cerebral as well as musical creative, not unlike Burle Marx himself.
And for a music video, the wavy stripes of the Copacabana Promenade are reminiscent of a Beatles Abby Road album cover on LSD😹 psychedelic in a good way, kinda how your music hits me in a swirl of sound and emotion. Love it! 😻
@@ericaeschenbacher4921 oh dont make me blushhhh🥰i definitely need to visit one day and document it
Love it!
Foot candle footage! You read my mind. Most of the time when I read an article written by someone who discovered an aroid in situ, I am thinking where is the ph test or the light meter? Excellent Jake! BTW what light meter is that?
Yes! That info would be quite helpful for growers to know! And the light meter is made by Dr.meter 😁
Huge pseudo bulbs in hot humid and not as bright conditions? Prolly a brassia species aka "spider orchids".
Would have been cool to see it flowering!
They are quite impressive when flowering and hard to miss as they are heavily scented. Earthy, woody types but still.
You two 😂 honey I'm home ❤
If I was straight we’d make the perfect cranky couple 😂
So... growlights are all a lie?????? :O
Haha! I mean it depends what exactly you mean by that. They definitely work but only within about 12 inches of the light. Beyond that the light intensity dips drastically for *most grow lights - some are stronger. But having a light meter and measuring the light on the leaves will give you a much better idea on whether your plant is getting enough light 😁
