    Hi Lou, just saw this video today! Some things you might want to know:
    1. The "Caprice Emblem" is called "Fleur de Lis" which is originally a French emblem
    2. Many Impala owners, especially owners of SS 427s (this was a special order package for the Impala) added the hideaway headlights, but they were never offered on the Impala, ONLY on the Caprice. Impala fans always argue about this, but this was definitely a Caprice only option!
    3. The vinyl roof was not standard, it was a factory option. Many of the 2 door hardtops got it, but it cost extra.
    4. The Caprice 2 door hardtop didn't have vent windows because it had standard "Astro Ventilation." It was an early example of a power ventilation system that became standard in 1971 on all full size GM cars. It was available as an extra cost option on Impalas and other Caprices, but only the Caprice Coupe got the vent window delete.
    5. The car in your video is a "loaded" car with a lot of rare options, including fully automatic Comfortron air conditioning, tilt steering column, gauge package (very rare, usually only found in SS 427s), 8 track multiple stereo AM/FM sound system, as well as the power accessories you noted in the video.
    Nice work as always, Bill H

    Wow! I'm having flashbacks! When I was 6, my dad bought a new 68 Impala. It was the same color combination as this one. It had a 327 with a power pack and was so fast that my uncles wanted to take it down to the dragstrip. My mom said no, tho. We had 4 kids in our family and we would travel twice a year from Illinois down to Mississippi and Florida in that car. Ahh, the good old days... 😊

    I've never seen a cooler 307-equipped car! So much going on here with the Comfortron, the FULL gauge package, the console, the TH400, the pop-up headlights... I don't remember ever seeing anything like this and I used to belong to an Impala club back in the day... good job selecting this car for review, Lou.

    OMG...my father used to own a chev dealership and he custom ordered a 68 Caprice with hideaway headlights with fiber optic display up on the fenders for signal lights, headlights and high beam, 396ci 325hp motor, power windows, bucket seats and console, 8 track tape player (which was way cool in the day). I sooooo wish I had asked for that car as they would have given it to me when I graduated high school in '79. I have never seen one quite like it before or since. This one is close and of course with the full gauge package and AC it's very cool. Ours was dark green with a black vinyl top and of course being the 60s...a light green vinyl interior.

      350 engines were Camaro, Nova and I believe Chevelle models only. The favorite 327 were around in 68 and available in corvettes and Impalas. Also, Non-SS Camaro could be ordered with the 327 engine. 350 engine was introduced in 1967 and was a Camaro SS motor only. Starting in 1968 motor was available in other select Chevrolet models.

    Congratulations to Tom. He knows more than he was able to say on this too quick episode of My Car Story.
    A genuine Hallmark of a good caretaker of these widely varied automotive gems
    is knowing more than is common knowledge. 🤔✨
    (The absence of wing/vent windows, “Astro-ventilation” … etc … ) Right Tom ? 🤝
    This particular example of a 1968 Caprice (not called “classic” yet) is an interesting yet explainable example from a cost conscious marketplace at Chevrolet dealerships. An interesting “checking the boxes” building your own specific - affordable -unique - personalized automobile demonstrating your individual style.
    During this time the combinations were limitless. Each GM offering (mostly) could be ordered, built, and dealer accessorized into the rare combinations seen today.
    You’ll notice the obvious Caprice model upgrades beyond the Impala model ….
    While at the same time, you’ll notice some interesting add ons, gauge package for the 307 in.³ engine ….. curious. 🤔💡
    Also curious, the apparent lack of power steering, most curious …. I must be wrong. 🔍🤔
    Because, the “Comfortron” automatic air conditioning, AM/FM stereo was expensive, add the expensive bucket seats, floor shift, and add the center console, power windows, and even more rare, power locks on a two door in 1968.
    But no power steering, someone check me on this I didn’t see it …. 🔍🤔🤷‍♂️
    Curious to know more about this automobiles, individual history. 💡

    What makes the 307 ordered with the hefty option list even more interesting is that the console shift pattern is "PRN321". This shows that they ordered the 3 speed Turbo 400 automatic (the Turbo 350 wasn't available until '69). Most 307 cars would have come with the 2 speed Powerglide automatic in '68. This has to be a rare bird.

    • @LynxStarAuto
      @LynxStarAuto 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Beat me to the punch. Extremely odd, and rare option package for sure. However AC automatically bumped you up to the 3 speed automatic. Just goes to show you that you could order whatever the hell you so damn pleased in 1968.
      I'm guessing the owner just wanted to cruise cruise cruise. The 307 was new for 68 also. So maybe that has something to do with it.

    • @dnanestrau
      @dnanestrau 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have to respectfully disagree about A/C automatically bumping you up to the Turbo Hydramatic. My grandmother ordered a new '68 Impala Custom Coupe with the 250 HP 327 and factory A/C. She ordered it with the Powerglide. I am surprised that the salesman didn't get her to order the Turbo Hydramatic as I suspect it was probably not much more money. It was a great car that was passed around in the family until '82 or so. It jumped time on the highway and bent the valves. A sad ending... I wish I had it today for sure.

    • @shwt121
      @shwt121 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually, most of the 327's came with the powerglide- the 307's had the 3-on-the-tree with the turbo 400 as optiinal equipment....I had a 68 convt. Impala w/ 327 4bbl & 2 spd power-slide tranny......no matter how hard I tried, I couldnt get any rubber straight off the line....but I got excellent MPG for a V8-23 to 25 hwy with about 16-18 mpg in city stop and go......thats with tire PSI@ 36 and 10/40 synthetic oil.

    If ever there were 2 such favorite years of Caprice it was the’68&’69 versions because of the hidden headlight option for both years. It’s a rare option to find as well as the fact that even though that car was well loaded with rare comfortron air & stereo radio with 4 speaker 8 track yeah that’s a car, it just needed the 396 or 427 under the hood even a rarely ordered 4 speed to really make it 1 of a kind

    * It was a Caprice option, but you COULD get it also on an Impala (if you paid more)

      283 and 307 shared the same block. They shared the same piston and bore size, only the engine stroke was different. In 1968 Chevrolet tuned these engines as low compression and to run on regular fuel. Definitely not fast motors, but am surprised mopar 6 cylinder made you eat dust. Lol…. Hopefully you had a four door Chevelle and not the 2 door sport coupe model…

    A gorgeous car. You know, these auto manufactures are such...copy-cats. They all must be "in" with the bulb manufacturers. There is absolutely NO NEED for daytime headlights. Period! The look stupid. The only time headlights should be on during the day is if you are part of a funeral procession. My Mother's 1988 Thunder Bird has "sensor controlled lighting"; if it's really cloudy and/or foggy, the lights go on. If it's not, they stay "off"(as they should).The sensor system was/is the way to go. Daytime lights are just cheesy-looking. Hide-A-Ways...are even better. Always loved the design, especially on this vehicle and third Generation Firebirds.

      @Hugh Jarse You don't...understand(...& I explained this). All manufacturers have to do is install a "sensor" switch. Period. That switch will "activate the lights when needed". It's not a matter of being cool; it's just stupid(& a waste)to have vehicular lights on during the day. And, yes...it looks stupid, besides.
