The tires are such a let down. Anyone who off-roads knows that tires are the most important thing as bad rubber can even bring a wrangler to its knees. With that being said, the course is pretty challenging and it looks like it did great even with the highway slicks. Put some proper rubber on it, one size up for slightly more clearance and I’d bet it would be a world of difference.
Great review. Thanks for doing it. How does this compare to a Subaru cross trek or forester. Debating between this and those since you can get these for 32000 now
Are you going to purchase it? If you’re going to own for the long run, Subaru easily is a more reliable vehicle than the Jeep. If you’re going to lease it and don’t care, go wild. The Subaru is also a much safer vehicle. If you’re worried about prices, Jeep has a lot of inventory so you’ll most likely get a better price compared to a MSRP Subaru. Hope that helps.
@@atmartensas an owner of a 2023 Outback XT I would not say this is accurate. I got my Outback well under invoice. Although both Jeep and Subaru owners will tell us that we are both wrong and reliability is phenomenal on both. History states otherwise.
@@atmartens I agree. I am looking to purchase. I would prefer Subaru but wilderness is about 40. Can get trailhawk compass for 32 . Tough call. Appreciate your input
I'm not a big fan of Subaru, but I would take either the Crosstrek or the Forester over a Compass every day. The Jeep is more expensive for mediocre benefit. They're all pretty generic Crossovers.
They're all turbos now so no need to designate it. I'm not likely to go there, so I have a new 2023 Compass Limited. Great when they have a 15% off sale, otherwise not sure what I would have bought. Possibly the Mazda CX-5, the CX-50 rides like a proverbial brick.
If you just take traction control off and lock it in 4 and keep a bit more momentum and throttle these things are great and dont usually get stuck on mild offroading situations. And of course better tires.
Need advice. This for 32500 lower end trailhawk or Subaru cross trek. Would love opinions and advice. Also how does this compare to ford bronco sport and not the badlands edition
@@drivingsports thanks for your advice. How does bronco sport non badlands compare to the Subaru. Also thanks for your vids. No one does anything like them.
@@drivingsports Add to that the Subaru is available without a turbo....avoid those stupid turbo engines, people think they're great because they sound cute, but they aren't made for longevity in mind, and a regular naturally aspirated engine especially those 4 cylinder boxer engines are much easier and cheaper to service and repair when needed.
Two questions: 1) Tge 2.0L Turbo made 270 Jp in the Cherokee. The Compass only gets 200hp? 2). Since they are canceling the Cherokee, why wouldn’t they carry over the great Destination A/T tires from the Cherokee Trailhawk?
Well, a little lift with proper beefier A/T-s should do the job for the most cases of application of this good looking small vehicle. I like the overhangs and bumpers, and thank God no horrendous plastic cladding everywhere, which per opinion of one Japanese brand should underline extreme off-road capabilities 😁
To go off-road, it misses out on a diesel-powered engine. In Brazil, this car is offered with a 2.0 Turbo diesel with 170hp, but with 350 N.m (258 lb/ft) of torque and a ZF 9-speed transmission. The extra torque helps a lot in situations where the AWD system is managing the torque split. However, for the next year, the diesel will be gone to welcome the 2.0T Hurricane with 270hp from the Wrangler
Captain...I believe we need more power! I'm giving it all she got! More power, less problems up the hill say a 5.0 L V8 that gets 500 hp and 510 lb feet of torque..yep that should do it for this jeep. 😜

I really hate the beeps and the “serv 4wd” warning this vehicle (and much of the competition on the compact suv market) does when the 4wd can’t do the job, switching the four wheel drive off and going back to 4x2 until it “cools down” (I doesn’t know exactly what it does) and them turns the 4wd on again after… those beeps and warnings are really frustrating
i have seen other review for this car and for cherokee and when the car is in full articulation with one wheel from each side on the air if you try to open and close the door of the passenger it stuck and does not close normal. Among many crossovers the only cars with this problem, bad body structure
Very often reviewers say that tires are the issue on these sort of cars. I disagree. The issue is suspension travel. Even on basic obstacles, the suspension travel is so little that the tires are simply not contacting the ground with enough pressure to do anything. It doesn't matter what the tread pattern is like. I can guarantee that those same exact tires equipped on a solid axle vehicle would roll right over those spots where the crossover spins out.
For something that would have cost about $15-19k a few years ago. With a piss poor AWD system too...not impressed at all with the stuff Jeep...err...Chrysler....err...Stellantis is doing.
Exactly! I'd be interested to find out how flat the vehicle needs to be where it doesn't run into this issue. There are steep hills that people live on and it's just wild it's not a safety issue to let people go without a seatbelt
Wrong friend, even with traction control off it comes back on when wheel speed hits factory ( Nanny) setting. These Nanny’s or as you say “come on it’s figuring it out” doesn’t work when momentum (power) is cut your stuck again.Unless you know how to disable it temporarily for real.😊

@@brandonruhl1639 wow! But at the same time, they are still more capable than other cars using CVTs...
Not having 10" of ground clearance is a huge disappointment. They should just leave the suspension alone and put a bigger tire on the trailhawk to hit 10" of clearance to compete with the Subaru Wilderness.
It should be illegal to call an SUV with an AWD system a 4x4. Even the buttons say 4 low, but it doesn't have a 2 speed transfer case. While it performs well for what it is, they need to stop calling their buttons 4lo and 4wd lock. I mean WTF.
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers If you're saying something is 4wd then people know it to be a 2 speed transfer case with 4hi and 4lo. If a vehicle doesn't have that it's AWD.

The tires are such a let down. Anyone who off-roads knows that tires are the most important thing as bad rubber can even bring a wrangler to its knees. With that being said, the course is pretty challenging and it looks like it did great even with the highway slicks. Put some proper rubber on it, one size up for slightly more clearance and I’d bet it would be a world of difference.
yea id put even a more aggressive tire alone would do a better job than OEM 's
Well... there's another vehicle I can cross off my list.
So, the Trailhawk has HT tires??? Well, it'll look nice at the library parking lot.
Great review. Thanks for doing it. How does this compare to a Subaru cross trek or forester. Debating between this and those since you can get these for 32000 now
i just got the jeep after riding in those other 2 and im happy with the purchase. new turbo engine is so nice
As for long term reliability, I leased my Subaru specifically due to all of the issues that crop up later on. I would say lease both the Subaru and Jeep in this scenario.
Jeeps look cooler then Mazdas
$46,000 for a COMPASS? I remember when the compass was supposed to be the cheap jeep. I’ll stick with Subaru for much less money
Almost 50K, for a measly 200 hp? Ouch! Sure fully loaded as it starts with 36k.. So again almost 40k for 200hp?
Test the 2023 Outlander PHEV
Over $40k??? Should not be called a TrailHawk without the all terrain tires and a ELSD
How did you get those headlights? I thought those were only available on the Limited version?
If you just take traction control off and lock it in 4 and keep a bit more momentum and throttle these things are great and dont usually get stuck on mild offroading situations.
And of course better tires.
Need advice. This for 32500 lower end trailhawk or Subaru cross trek. Would love opinions and advice. Also how does this compare to ford bronco sport and not the badlands edition
The 2024 Crosstrek Sport is excellent. Buy that. Non-Badlands Bronco Sports are good, but I think the Forester is a better deal at that point.
I have the compass trailhawk. There’s no chance it can hang with a forester wilderness. No chance
I owned a 2022 Compass Trailhawk.
Way way over priced
Putting the trailhawk badge on this type of baby SUV basically destroyed all the significance of that name trailhawk. Such a shame
Its like Toyota TRDing everything.
Sooooo $47k with the right tires that should come on it anyway 😂
Two questions:
1) Tge 2.0L Turbo made 270 Jp in the Cherokee. The Compass only gets 200hp?
2). Since they are canceling the Cherokee, why wouldn’t they carry over the great Destination A/T tires from the Cherokee Trailhawk?
These tires are great for road use and light trails.
Ryan do you ever test Maserati or Alfa Romeo?
limited slip differential would have helped here quite a lot. The brake way of generating limited slip doesn't seem that efficient
For the price of this campus I would just get the cherokee trailhawk which is a true off-road vehicle.
@@RetirementGoals1 Weird because it's so much better than most the SUV's tested here.
Too expensive for the size.
Hi, what about Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk 2023?
Thank you
Well, a little lift with proper beefier A/T-s should do the job for the most cases of application of this good looking small vehicle. I like the overhangs and bumpers, and thank God no horrendous plastic cladding everywhere, which per opinion of one Japanese brand should underline extreme off-road capabilities 😁
🤪 this is hysterical.. gotta keep
Three thousand RPMs .. select D3 .. and…Goooo…!!!!💨
Do any of the modes not cut power?/
Hard pass
My washed up 1999 250k mile isuzu rodeo 4x4 with True locking diff on ko2 all terrain tires will walk those trails in wet conditions 😂 my brother has a 87 nissan pathfinder 4x4 we beat the crap out of them offroad and they keep going..they don't build vehicles like they use 2..wish I could find a 80s model hilux truck for a reasonable price motors were bullet proof and they are rugged offroaders
Lol defender t-shirt for a jeep review😂
i have seen other review for this car and for cherokee and when the car is in full articulation with one wheel from each side on the air if you try to open and close the door of the passenger it stuck and does not close normal. Among many crossovers the only cars with this problem, bad body structure
I’ll keep my Willys CJ3B thank you.
This vs the outback wilderness would be a great comparison
I am on the fence on this one, anyone having experience to share with those reliability wise?
If you want reliability, go with the Forester, Crosstrek or Outback..
@@JSBowling2011 thank you ;)
46k for this thing? 25k max.
It's not 2002 anymore
@@Memetologist you gonna buy it for 46?
For something that would have cost about $15-19k a few years ago. With a piss poor AWD system too...not impressed at all with the stuff Jeep...err...Chrysler....err...Stellantis is doing.
@@wildbill23c $15-19K what you think this is the 80's? wow people come on you can't be that......
@@Qugie It isnt worth much more than that
That's blizzard the seat belt is locked while the vehicle is not a flat surface. For $46,000, I feel like there are other better options out there.
Can you do the Ascent next?
Based on recommendation- in have tried - 6 months majority of time I have been made to run around workshop with unrelible or tangled care. Substandard components malfed towords customer
I hate CVT's but would still buy a Forester Wilderness over this...
I appreciate the little spotlights where you compare it to other cars and explain each one's technology...
Q: What will be the performance of the Forester and the Crosstrek on the same trail?
They would cut power a lot more because their cvt’s are known for overheating easily
@@brandonruhl1639 wow! Interesting, and yeah I've seen a lot of off-roading videos using crossovers and SUVs with CVTs, and most of them show the 'overheating' message at one point, but I've never seen a Subaru doing that, so that's why? it cuts the power to avoid it? But at the same time, they are still more capable than other cars using CVTs...
He's done the course with a Forester Wilderness with ease. Subaru doesn't have the overheating issue.
@@TheDryToalla you must not have watched any videos at all so stop the 🧢
I could see Forester fans a lot here😊
Not having 10" of ground clearance is a huge disappointment. They should just leave the suspension alone and put a bigger tire on the trailhawk to hit 10" of clearance to compete with the Subaru Wilderness.
I bet with better tires and aired down it would be a completely different view. Ask me how i know
It should be illegal to call an SUV with an AWD system a 4x4. Even the buttons say 4 low, but it doesn't have a 2 speed transfer case. While it performs well for what it is, they need to stop calling their buttons 4lo and 4wd lock. I mean WTF.
There's no formal classification of namings 4x4, 4WD or AWD so manufacturers are calling their systems as they want.
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers If you're saying something is 4wd then people know it to be a 2 speed transfer case with 4hi and 4lo. If a vehicle doesn't have that it's AWD.
@@pacattack81 These are only spoken, informal definitions. There are no official norms, there is no law defining the systems and namings. Furthermore - If you look at J1952 by SAE, there's even no names like 4x4 or 4WD, all starts with AWD. That's why sticking to namings is pointless, what's import is the mechanical structure of the system.
Time to buy these guys now they are $45k canadian because of the discounts!
Sorry switched off when first annoying advert kicked in at start, they do my head in, once again sorry.
@5:11 you can see my point 😂
These american companies are a disgrace the way the keep Increasing prices.
LOL, umm every automaker out there has drastically increased their prices....and lowered their quality standards with garbage turbo charged engines in place of V8's...cough....cough...TOYOTA
@wildbill23c oh I agree but I'm american so I hold our country to a higher standard. Japan can do what they want but if America did right by its base then our automakers would be killing it.
Wish you would take a Cherokee th out there, but I guess that won't happen now that they aren't making them anymore
