$46K is nucking futs. Jeep did away with the Cherokee and then moved Compass right up into it's pricing category. Add outlandish pricing together with lack of long term reliability, and you begin to understand why Jeep is one of the few brands in 2023 whose dealers have lots full of inventory sitting unsold. Bring on the rebates!
I did a lot of research before purchasing a '23 Latitude Lux late June of '23. I considered equivalents, but the well-reviewed turbocharged engine and transmission (new this year), plus some good deals at a dealership (Mt. Juliet Nashville), closed the deal. $6K under MSRP--so some of the price complaints below miss the mark. It is a pleasure to drive with the added power and crisp transmission. What I wasn't expecting was the mileage. Such claims often raise "Yeah sure!" eyebrows, but I took a 130-mile trip in central Tennessee and averaged 41.1 mpg. I turn getting good mileage into a game and know how to do it, but this was unexpected with an EPA rating of 32 highway. So no guilt about not getting a hybrid. Classy looking rig (it's a Jeep), fun to drive, with exceptional mileage. Highly recommended.
Nice review as always, Tom, and happy to see you review a non-hybrid/electric model! I would add Ford Bronco Sport to the list of Compass competitors. And while $46K is a bit much for a Compass, a decently specced Latitude/Altitude model (where does Jeep get these names?) can be had for upper $30's. At that price, it'd be on my short list, along with the Bronco Sport and Mazda CX-5.
True, Bronco Sport in Badlands trimwould be a worthy competitor to Trailhawk . I'd blame that oversight on the pain meds but I've been off those for a week.
Tom…your reviews are top tier. Love the comprehensive details and the honest opinion. Adult style and great videos. They do look so much better on my 4k T.V
Got mine for 29K with tradein of 10 yo Mini Cooper. True, don’t have the heated power seats, clear roof and other options but it’s still a Trailhawk and redline pearl red! Makes me happy 😃. Nice review btw
It looks like an improvement over the model it replaces, but sure gets spendy. We just bought a 2023 Subaru Forester Wilderness and this Compass is $10,000 more expensive. That's a tough ask unless you REALLY want a Jeep logo on the hood.
Great review as always, Tom. I like the image and capability of the Jeep products. To me, Jeep = Cabelas and Subaru = REI. I just got an Outback Touring XT (260 hp on regular) for $40K after negotiating. It does everything but bake bread. Decent handling, great acceleration (and that's with CVT!), 32 on the highway, quiet/comfortable for four big adults, and will get me through any gravel or mud/snow situation I'll face, since my hardcore camping days are behind me. With the rear seats flopped down, I can slide my mountain bike right in there; don't even need the bike rack. This rig is like a flying tank. And unlike my dear departed nine-year old X3 it has a dipstick! And no fg run-flats! And a full-sized spare! Subie for the win.
I too "dreaded" driving the old compass as a loaner. I also try not to be overly critical of interiors, but let's just say this interior is amazing compared to the old one. The compass may not be on the top of my shopping list, but still nicely improved...
I know Jeep has never been generous with cargo covers (even Grand Cherokees didn't come with them standard when I last checked), but at $46K for a subcompact this is a glaring miss.
i ordered my 2023 compass feb 6 they took till April 9th to deliver on easter sunday very happy here with my latidue trim didn't need to spend extra to get stuff i didn't want. $38K
My sister lives in Tahoe. Up there you can find Jeeps all over the place. Those and Subarus. My bro-in-law has a Compass, my Sis drives a Crosstrek, my Nephew a Cherokee, his wife a Subie... and the list goes on. They love them all. By the way, were you over here in my neighborhood (Napa) a few weeks back to drive the new Rolls Spectre? I'll bet you were, I might have even seen you on my bike ride! I saw about five of them that morning and the one in that two-tone military green was amazing!
I had a 2023 Compass as a rental last week - I couldn’t stand the turbo lag. Very disappointed with the driving experience, as the rest of the vehicle was very nice.
Nice review! I’d like additional info like projected reliability, especially compared to the Ford Bronco Sport (which i imagine is far more likely to be cross-shopped with this than the Honda CR-V).
If it was just a bit bigger, like Forester and RAV4 big, it would be a much better offering. It’s just too small for the price, to me. It has a very nice interior, but that only goes so far.
Take that $46k and put it into your home: 70 inch 4k TV, lots of speakers, big amp, 4k DVD player and a popcorn machine. That Compass will be worthless in 4 to 5 years but your home will still be home with all that nice stuff in it. Prices are too high, and people are suffering because of it. When someone pays too much for a vehicle, the dealers and manufacturers keep prices high.
A new twin turbo 2L V4 makes only 200 hp? The 2021 Accord 2L V4 could make 252 hp and the 2L Civic type R can do 315 hp. Seems Jeep can do a lot more tuning to get power.
Beautifully done video. Maybe you should give some tips to that dreadful “everyman” driver dude who lives in your state? He is the worst! How does he even get press cars at this point?
@@DrivenCarReviews: 100%. Hybrid should be the standard in this class of vehicle. “Trail ready” marketing aside, these are predominantly around-town & commuting vehicles.
At $46k for a Jeep you'd better be off getting a Wrangler, or Gladiator which are both more off-road worthy and will retain their resale value much better. I'd consider a lower trim but $35k would be a max I'd spend on a new Compass

Does it not concern you that Jeep is always on the worst cars list on Consumers reports and others ....buy something else this is probably crap if the last 5 years of problems means anything.
He is reviewing it. What do you want him to say? There are people who still buy these things. Car reviewers are not "well it might be a POS so I won't review it".
I mention from time to time but reliability depends on many things and there's no way I can assess how any individual vehicle will do over the years. I've owned cars from "questionable" brands that were flawless over the years. I've had friends whose Toyotas and Hondas failed big time. People buying Jeep go in with their eyes wide open knowing it doesn't have top reliability. And I like CU but I use them as a resource, not a bible.

My wife and kids nearly died several times in our 2023 compass trailhawk. Jeeps auto braking is the worst. Engages for no reason. Dodge would not help at all. Only thing they would tell us is keep it turned off. Even with it turned off they will still engage. Very dangerous. I would never buy another jeep product with auto braking. Please dont trust these little things with your family. Ours had many more issues ..finally got rid of ours with only 5,000 miles on it.
You have to be eating your own poop if you're crazy enough to pay 36k for a Jeep Compass. At 46k you're eating your poop and throwing money in the trash!

Another excellent and informative review as always, Tom! I’d take a Toyota RAV4 Adventure over this though.
great review, love the chapters! but $46k for a car that will be $16k in 3 years is ridiculous 🤯
Just bought one and love it so far, granted I only have 1,200 miles on it.
How are you enjoying the compass and any issues?
...and just like that the Compass is relevant. It's also on the short list of my vehicle shopping list .
Another great review…but my god, $46k?! Yikes.
ya over priced
Here in Brazil Stellantis it’s gaining market. the compass sells well (comparatively to the average income) The new Ram Rampage should be a hit
46 grands? wow.
0:48, Bronco Sport. 🤷🏼♂️
Yep. Missed that one.
Thanks, Tom.
Good to see Martin survived the wedding 👍🏼💰
Er, did he ask for a raise lately, per chance? 😂
No question about it Tom, that was a Gerrrrate video. My kind of car.
I like my new Compass but i find the headrests on the rear seats realy obstruct the rear view in the mirror so i keep the seats layed forward
Pro tip
Flip the tire over and you’ll have more room to put more things under the floor in the back
A power upgrade is what this vehicle desperately needed
Love your evil twin - signature item
They’ve added the turbo engine from the Cherokee.
So, are they getting rid of the Cherokee. As rumored?
I hear conflicting rumors. Best bet, it will return with a different name and electrified in some way.
No ads on youtube if you upgrade to youtube premium
The refresh definitely helped but not the type of suv I’m looking for in that market. Dodge Hornet R/T and Mazda CX-30 Turbo are my favorites.
What does the Hornet have 1.2 liter turbo ?....sounds like sewing machine i bet ......and it's a Dodge....yikes!
Nice review! I’d like additional info like projected reliability, especially compared to the Ford Bronco Sport (which i imagine is far more likely to be cross-shopped with this than the Honda CR-V).
Are we getting a review of BMW x1 later?
Not sure at this time, I'll have to check the press fleet.
It does NOT have a low range transfer case, it simply locks the transmission in low 1st gear
I can say they ride bigger than look 👀 Full size ride… Got it in the High Altitude … more highway style
If this makes it to 100000 miles without engine problems I’d be amazed
also comparable to the bronco sport?
Absolutely. Trailhawk and Badlands would be comparable. A brain fart on my part
it will be sold as used for $25k
If it was just a bit bigger, like Forester and RAV4 big, it would be a much better offering. It’s just too small for the price, to me. It has a very nice interior, but that only goes so far.
Merci !
While its a significant improvement over the previous Compass, $46K?? Youch!! I hope nobody actually buys these at that MSRP, its $10K too much.
$46K for all that utility and good trail-rated capabilities is not bad. Lots of tech also. I like it and is my list. Thanks!!

Great if all you want is off-road capability. Compass is much more refined on a daily basis.
