This was the inspiration for Der Clou (The Clue / The Sting) by Neo Software on Amiga and DOS, one of my all-time favourites. I would have loved They Stole a Million if I had known it back then.
Sounds suspiciously like some cheeky game designer was quietly teaching people how to program a computer. :) I'd heard of this one, but never got the pleasure of playing it. It's a pleasure hearing it explained in depth.
It really is a great game, yet it requires a lot of patience and planning - I always remember pulling off the perfect heist as a kid! I haven't been able to perfectly replicate it since haha... I had much more patience back in the 80s 😇🕹️👌
LOL! Leverage: The Video Game. This game looks pretty cool! I may have to give this one a whirl. I like the "heist mastermind" idea. I've gotta say... I didn't expect to see something like this on the C64. Such a versatile little machine with such a wide variety of games.
Absolutely - the sheer multitude of different gaming styles on the Commodore 64 made me a very proud owner and is something I look back on very fondly to this day 😇🕹️👌
I always wanted to look for this game to my Commodore 64 - and still want to 😹. They may have stolen a million 😹, but at least, Ben Daglish made a million with his brilliant music 🎵🎶 works on the Commodore 64 and Amiga 😸😺👍🕹️.
For kids under about 13 or 14 I don't imagine this would excite them too much, but for the later teens and older I can see where they'd appreciate the appeal.
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer When I was a kid playing Atari 2600, if I wasn't blowing up aliens or exploring some underground cave then I was bored! Luckily I learned to appreciate the more "casual" types of games later on.
Only played it briefly. What I learned is that if you're doing a robbery, you have to be in and out in less than 2 minutes. Sounds too difficult, so decided to avoid crime.
You can get it down to a fine art with good micro management, but its one of those titles that you really need to invest time in to enjoy thoroughly - it was very addictive though 😇🕹️👌
I loved this game. A friend had it and we used to stay up late planning our heists. It was fun because it was hard and demanded you were both smart and creative. Lots of trial and error. We were kids after all. I always wondered why noone made a more modern take on it through the years. It's a brilliant concept after all.
This makes it to my top 5 C64 games list. Losing only to likes of Ultima IV + V and Mars Saga. This was so much fun, optimizing the robberies. And I used to boss to do some looting too, not just to sit back as a lookout.
I really want to start getting into those RPG games... but at present, with me releasing 1 video per day, it's difficult to do a good run of them - however, I'm probably going to switch up the schedule in the New Year and be sure to add some of those classic titles to the channel too 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer Indeed, it will take a lot of time to make a video about those massive RPGs. Looking forward for the videos when you finally get the time to review them in a way they deserve.
They should've turned it into a teenage dating simulator, where you're juggling multiple girlfriends like a rom-com ninja, using blueprints and schematics to dodge awkward encounters and keep your secret life of "monogamy in disguise" intact! Ahhh those were the days 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer I never knew that to be a thing, as I was too busy stealing and selling silver and gold to finance a lifestyle of hookers and cocaine.
That background music sounds so familiar. Is it from an early 1980s arcade game? It does sound kind of like the Double Dragon (1987) arcade demo-play music, which I like a lot. If so, then is it a SID version? Thanks. :)
I 100% agree with you!!! The first few bars of the SID tune sound exactly like the Double Dragon theme (One of my all time favourite coin-ops!). I was actually thinking that when I was making the video This pre-dates Double Dragon too... do you think maybe Kazunaka Yamane was listening to Ben Daglish tracks back in the day! haha Maybe, you never know😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer Yes, I was puzzled that it came a year before Double Dragon. Maybe that part of the tune is from an even earlier game or even from a film. It's fun to explore music and see where they came from. Anyway, this They Stole A Million looks like a lot of fun! The style kind of reminds me of a game I had called Mystery Master: Murder by the Dozen (CBS Software 1983), which was real good (if player[s] have the included pad of sheets to write notes on, the clues booklet, and the solution booklet which came with I remember a special clear red plastic sheet to see the invisible solutions).

This is what I immediately saw in its gameplay. A cool 8-bit version of the VGA PC game The Clue.
Yeah, the guys who made that apparently went on to be part of Austrian division of Rockstar Productions! 😇🕹️👌

A game The Completionist wouldn't have been removed from :P
Very true indeed! 😇🕹️👌

@@JustWasted3HoursHere I was 8 when I used to play, and this title was one of my favs (when it loaded).
Wow this looks very interesting! Thanks for the overview! Time to become a criminal boss!
Hope you manage to get into this game as, with time, it becomes very addictive indeed and a decent challenge to become a crime lord! 😇🕹️👌

There actually are remakes like "Der Clou / The Clou"
Superb memories - yeah I'd like to see this one remade... the concept was superb! I did enjoy playing 'Payday' on my PC back in the day too 😇🕹️👌

GTA VII - Trepaning Edition 😇🕹️👌
One of my fav C64 games (alongside Feud, KickStart2, Clumsy Colin, and Paradroid) and I was only 8 when I used to play.
The only one I need to get up on the channel then for you would be 'Feud'... all the others are listed! All great games too, by the way 😇🕹️👌
Absolutely loved the atmosphere of _Mugsy's Revenge_ as a child... ...until I got a history lesson when I finally 'won' the game...
I almost forgot about that Melbourne House classic! Great game indeed 😇🕹️👌
Hey just because we're playing as criminals doesn't mean we are controlling villains,
Very true indeed... lovable rogues, perhaps? 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer Naturally. And who knows what evils we're preventing by stealing that wealth before it can be abused?
Haha very true indeed, the butterfly effect I suppose 😇🕹️👌
fantastic game
One that requireas a lot of patience and planning, but very rewarding when you can pull the heist off and come away with the loot unscathed! 😇🕹️👌
Think i got the original big box version i tub with loads of other c64 games
I love having the physical copies of these classics, even looking at the boxart is very nostalgic 😇🕹️👌
