Welcome to my humble Commodore Channel where I bring clips of C64 (Commodore 64) & Commodore Amiga games from yesteryear for you to browse through, listen to the SID tunes, see snippets from levels within the game - ultimately, to tantalise your nostalgia senses and bring back those fantastic memories from your youth
There may be times here and there when I consult the great reviewers of the 80s for inspiration, yet the games on the channel are timeless to me. Sometimes a little help with the context of narration is always welcomed from the professionals who reviewed these games the first time around 😇🕹👌

FLOOR 13 | Commodore Amiga (1991)
Floor 13, for the Commodore Amiga, is a management simulation controlled by a menu-based system (similar to Darklands) and is presented in black and white for a film noir feel. Players take the role of the Director General in this secret organization, and are given a target date of 20 days to attend to their duties.
During this period, performance will be evaluated based on the Prime Minister's polling results. If the PM is doing well, the agency will be expanded and will have more equipment and services available to handle the situations it will encounter later in the game. If the PM is behind, Floor 13 risks reduction in the number of services it has available or even the player's continued employment.
After each successful 20 day period, another 20 days are added to the calendar, full of new problems and objectives

Elite, for the Commodore 64, is a free-form space trading and combat simulation, commonly considered the progenitor of this sub-genre. The player initially controls a character referred to as "Commander Jameson", starting at Lave Station with 100 credits and a lightly armed trading ship called Cobra Mark III. Most of the game consists of traveling to various star systems, trading with their inh...

Some great Commodore 64 nostalgia memories with my brother, Dave. It was my brother who introduced me to the C64 all the way back in 1982 and here is a few little insights and memories from where it all began There was a live music festival occuring the same day and we forgot it was on. Apologies in advance as we had a good few drinks that day 😀 He has told me he'd like to do this again in the ...

Loved playing this on my C64. Had a friend from school who told me about a version which allowed you to link two C64s and to play together. Amazing how I believed him, even to the point of taking my C64 setup around his house and trying to get this dual version he had a copy of (on tape) to load, but failing...
Great video mate and a great time for you and your kis. I'm from the UK but been in Australia for the last 16 years. Asteroids was the first game I ever played in the arcades....born in 75. I hope I can get back to the UK someday and have the same experience with my kids. Much love x
Loved Elite on my breadbin, loved Elite Frontier on my Amiga, love Elite Dangerous on my PC. Elite is the Dr Who of gaming.
This was one of my very first C64 games and therefore feels very nostalgic. We kind of made it a rule to play it every Friday the 13th when we were teens.
Good game for Halloween! There's not much depth but there's tonnes of nostalgia 😇🕹👌
1:00:00 you gonna be there both days this time ya git! I’ve got it in the calendar!
I'll be there that's the main thing 😇🕹👌
The classic! Man i found this game impossible, glad you are revisiting it for me bro!
Another classic covered, ended up playing Uridium, Rambo and also Commandos after Friday 13th haha. A great night to be had 😇🕹👌
The screaming screens scared the Jesus out of me when I played this game, I was like 6 years old. Good times.
Yup, put the brown stains in my keks too as a kid! This and Chimera... jesus those screams! Not to mention the 1st section when loading 'Way Of The Exploding Fist' - those developers were brutal for adding the screaming parts haha 😇🕹️👌
Aw I missed the live/premier. Well gonna watch now! Cheers CCG!🕹
Gah not to worry my friend. I promise we'll get some Shinobi/Ninja types running soon too - maybe a playthrough of the Last Ninja! 😇🕹️👌
Fantastic game..spent months on it..still play to this day.
Thats what I love to hear - staying retro means we'll always be the greatest gaming community. I cant blame you though, theres so much adventure to be had in Hunter... one of the first 'sandbox' games I'd ever experienced... in fact, probably the first 😇🕹️👌
This was the first RTS game i ever tried :))) Still love it to this day, and still play it from time-to-time :))
Same here! Loved the original David Lynch movie of Dune and since then been a massive fan. I've not read all of the Frank Herbert books but I'd definitely say I was a big fan of the whole 'Dune' universe. So when I first played this I was majorly into it straight away... then realising how fantastic it was I then went onto play RTS games like Command & Conquer. It all stemmed from being a 5 year old geek and enjoying the whole world of Dune 😇🕹️👌
I had this on PC, I can't count the number of times I was defenestrated. An interesting and fun game! I never really got the concept of subtlety as a kid, and so I ended up beating what seemed to be half of the UK to death with a rubber hose.
The irony is, your approach was perfect! Defenestration was key to success in this game 😇🕹️👌
What is there to even say about Elite that hasn't been said? It deserves all the praise and glory that it gets.
Completely agree - an absolute banger of a game on all formats 😇🕹️👌
Interesting unique game. My first thought is that this reminds me a little bit of "Papers Please" on Steam.
A little bit, but definitely more depth and more research is needed to select the right departments for each 'job' 😇🕹👌
2:17 these cyan things don't do anything, I have never managed to make Monty fly, he has 4 tickets. I just give up. I gave up on the previous game too, ridiculously hard and broken games, idk how they work for some others.
I think I just pressed the 'Commdore Key' haha I bet that must be frustrating. Yeah it's that when you're in front of the airports 😆🕹👌
First thing I thought when I saw the samurai was out like exactly like that pirate game.
Yeah the gameplay coding is pretty much exactly the same but the sprites and backgrounds were replaced... the cheek eh! 😆🕹👌
not familiar with this one, would have been too complicated for me at the time
The controls and everything are straight forward - it was just a case of knowing which department to deploy when and where to maximise results and minimise damages... still tough to make the correct decisions to this day but there's a nice walk through out there for those wanting to know the correct outcomes 😇🕹👌
When I finally learnt to dock and then to sell narcotics and slaves, this opened up the whole Elite universe to me. What a classic.
Yeah!! The illegal trading was when the fun really started ramping up! Such a class game 😇🕹️👌
Hey i just found this channel and i love it. Long shot question/request, there was a cover disk (maybe late 80's) on Amiga Action. On one of the discs there were some sample tunes and one of the tunes was a real somber and relaxed piece, the main instrument sampled was like a raw piano melody, i dont know why but i listened to it over and over (especially when i was stressed) any ideas?
Glad you found the channel! Welcome aboard! As for the cover disk... hmmm - not 100% sure but maybe check through the archives and see if you recognise the cover here -> archive.org/details/amigaaction 😇🕹️👌
it sounds like an interesting be the bad guy game. If there had been two games one from each side (So one running Floor 13 and the other trying to bring it down.) it might have been more fu though,
I like that idea... so you could always be in competition for greatness. That would have definitely given the game added appeal 😇🕹️👌
Ah yes, great game to satisfy your inner sadist! Also, very nostalgic and the theme very reminiscent of the 80s and early 90s.
It's tough to make decent progress and enable your PM to win the polls... but its an achievement when you know you are making the right decisions. A lot of it for me was pure luck I think, but there is definitely method to the madness in order to be a successful sadist haha 😇🕹️👌
A very ambitious game for the C64, amazing they managed it so well.
This game is also what made me truly fall in love with my Sega Mega Drive (When I eventually got one around 1993) 😇🕹️👌
I picked this up for PC on a whim when I was a teenager. Really appreciated the atmosphere of the thing, and I think it perhaps got a jump on "Papers, Please" with regards to working within an evil bureaucracy. The fact that "you" are also a member of a secret society that may have its own goals certainly never helped my avoiding a visit from Mr. Garcia.
Ahh I love "Papers, Please"! I like the simplistic games as such... but with the darker undertones. Unique and, understandably.... very addictive! The power is in your hands at the click of a button! 😇🕹️👌
I did not understand that Elite was a major extension of Atari's Star Raiders. This seems to be what Star Raiders could have been with 8X the available memory.
Never had the Atari I'm afraid... in fact, nobody I knew ever had an Atari either It was like a skipped generation of the 8-bit era here in the UK. I believe Star Raiders is a great game though and must play it sometime 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer I'd love to see your review of it. Looking at your review of Elite, I think you'll find it quaint, and see it as the parent of Elite. The difference of what you can do with 8k vs 64k .... I would have found stunning in the day. I latched onto F-15E Strike Eagle as my fav flight sim on my C64. But by '85 I had switched onto programming over gaming with my computer time.
we used this for training in North Korea. Er, I mean, THEY used it for training...
It's called floor 5 there though, as they're a bit shorter 😇🕹️👌
Loved this game but it was painfully slow. Whenever appraching a sun for refuelling, I'd switch to rear view just to speed it up. A mate of mine had the ZX Spectrum version and it was superior.
That seems to have been a decent little trick to speed things up, by switching the view to the rear of the craft... good thinking too. I wish I would have known to do that back in 1985 hehe 😇🕹️👌
As they say, they don't make them like this anymore 😁 Imagine someone trying to publish something like this these days 😁
There would be more controversy these days for games like this thats for sure! Jeeze... we could have a field day with storylines too! 😇🕹️👌
Thank you for sharing this! David designed and programmed this cult classic. I did the graphics programming and audio and helped with porting. Really appreciate the review, thank you!
Very welcome Shahid, was a big lover of this game when I was a 10 year old kid... the intrigue gripped me even if I had to ask my older brother to help me out with the concept initially. A true 'original' game 😇🕹️👌 Should check out Faces of Haarne or Chimera, also on the channel!
I want to love this game. I really do, but it’s just never really worked for me.
Some games are hit and miss... but if you allow yourself to really get into it, Floor 13 becomes a very immersive experience. You just need to be very lucky or very shrewd with the responses in order to make progress 😇🕹️👌
I had this game as a kid... but didn't have the manual. So I had no idea what I was doing. I was too overwhelmed at the time. A friend of mine really enjoyed the newer Elite Dangerous game on Steam... and would play it all the time. He tried to get me into it, but I honestly never gave it a fair shake. I should probably give this C64 game and/or the newer game a try.
I feel your pain there - without the manual this game was mega tough to understand. I linked both the manual and the novella in the description for those who want to reminisce 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer Thanks! I may give the C64 version another chance. I'd also be tempted to give the newer Elite Dangerous (which I heard David Braben was involved in the development) on Steam a try. However, my friend who was trying so hard to get me to play it passed away last year. So that kinda killed my incentive for trying out Elite Dangerous.
I've never seen this one, but it looks kinda interesting. I agree with you on the plates. I always thought they looked a bit odd.
Those plates are garish! I see them all the time, especially when going around to my wifes parents house... eughhh 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer Agreed. I never understood the fascination some people have with those plates. The game looks like it might be fun to try, though. 🙂
I love this game, even if some of the events aren’t massively obvious as to how to do them successfully. Love the cult aspect which solely comes into focus as you play which gives the best ending. It’s flawed but I wish there were more games like this
Finally! Someone who agrees that this game is great!! Hehe... I give it a solid 7/10 for sure - originality and ruthlesness kept me intrigued, especially when I managed to keep the P.M on my side and happy. I am not sure if it was pure luck, or if I was on the right track - but I remember getting really far on this game as a kid! 😇🕹️👌
I got this on PC - what a convoluted game this was - needed to bring an IQ to this game! Spycraft was a much better game, though, that covered the same subject matter!
I never played Spycraft, but then again that was released for the PC... I didn't get a PC until Half-Life came out!! Hehe, missed a whole load of DOS games. I really need to get back into the PC scene someday 😇🕹️👌
Interesting concept, but somewhat boring implementation. It could have been greatly improved by interjecting some sections with action scenes, such as controlling agents who need to gather information from hostile areas, etc. I wonder what grade the Amiga magazines of the day gave it?
CU Amiga gave this one 87% overall... however, some of the competetor magazines were a little more harsh with review scores of 75%, 50% and even 22% respectively! So it was a mixed bag... but then again, all of these games are subjective - I'd give it a solid 7/10 for when I played it back in the day, just for the pure originality 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer Subjective indeed. I think this game would probably do best with teenage and adult players and not so well with kids, say, 12 and under.
I liked this game and quite atmospheric, in fact I love these espionage games like 'Spycraft' an 'The President is Missing'.
Ahh yeah I remember 'The President Is Missing' - had it on my Amiga and remember the jingly tune from Barry Leitch. Good times 😇🕹️👌
This game was really boring and not easy to play. The fact you needed a lot of random video clips just to get us entertained shows how unpleasant the game was.
I dunno... games being subjective and all - I actually enjoyed this game loads when I was a kid - a unique concept at the time and completely orginal game. Was a far cry from the plethora of shooting games I'd been playing prior at the time 😇🕹️👌
As a finnish 🇫🇮 retro tomcat 😺🕹️, i meow admitting one thing: I have never played - nor heard of - FLOOR 13 😹. The game seems absolutely challenging 😺👍🕹️. Somehow, it reminds me of COVERT ACTION. It looks so cool, i could give a try 😺👍.
Absolutely not like Covert Action. Covert Action is built on, well, action.
Definitely try it out sometime, its a decent gaming experience 😇🕹️👌
Such a classic and agree on the time it takes to get good at it, but sooo much game play and repeatable game play in it.
Literally hours and hours were poured into perfecting this game, good times 😇🕹️👌
The first issue of Zzap had the game
An iconic game indeed 😇🕹️👌
I loved the other Popeye game on the C64. I played it all the time. I never got around to playing this one, though. I'm tempted to give it a whirl... although like you said, it looks a bit sluggish.
Yeah the original Parker Bros versiion was the one I played mostly as a kid too - but this one is definitely worth playing, if you can put up with the sluggish speed 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer Thanks! I'll give it a try sometime then. 🙂
Never played this, apparently it was a semi-budget price of £3.95 that was later released at the full budget price of £1.99. Doesn't look a bad game for the price, especially on rerelease, it would have looked nicer if they managed to use multicolour sprites however, but perhaps it was a struggle to cram everything in.
Yeah firebird re-released it on their 'Silver 199' Range and they changed the cover of the game completely... as for the colouring of sprites, was probably another of the 'Speccy' ports that they kept to look as original as possible. Which sucks 😇🕹️👌
I used to get a bug where with you (Bruce Lee) or Yama would punch the wall at the bottom right of the screen and it would hit you. If you lay down it would miss. So you'd have to make your way down to the bottom, occasional ducking to kill him. It only really happened on the first 3 screens.
I hear a few things about the bugs in Bruce Lee but never experienced them myself. The only thing I considered to be a pain in the ass was that when you started off to run, he would sometimes sort of 'stagger' and kick the floor with his feet... sort of, scurrying along - instead of running smoothly. This would be a particular pain in the backside when doing running jumps over the 1 shot kill obstacles and especially when tackling the electrical bead sections! 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer Oh yeah, that happens all the time. Its almost like the hit detection for the floor wasnt always right, as you know when its going to happen.
Those larger than life sprites were certainly something. They were a bit too large, tbh. I did enjoy discovering the world in this one. Never figured out what to do. Never finished it either. Doesn't matter. I'll watch a longplay. Nice memory.
Good memories all the same but yeah the characters are HUGE in this game - a trademark programming style from Priestley 😇🕹️👌
One of my first games. Loved it. Loved Popeye. I loved all strong characters, in any franchise. Played this one alone in the attic, at night. Was scared shitless of the 'ghost' that appears on the sides in the first area. Later on I learned that it's actually a sea hag. Although in my memory, the ghost/hag looked different. Maybe I had a busted crack or something. Anyway, I loved being scared shitless and then having to go down the dark attic stairs to come back downstairs. Never told my folks about being scared. I was such a little psychopath that I enjoyed my fear on my own.
Haha do you mean from the McMillan version of Popeye (With the LARGE) sprites, or the hag that appears in this arcade style version. Good memories all the same... I had similar experiences with beign scared to death playing games like 'Forbidden Forest' or 'Friday 13th' (Which I wll be covering LIVE tomorrow)... also, as silly as it sounds, even playing the text adventure 'Zork' would scare me half to death as a kid! 😇🕹️👌
The hag always looked the same. I think I just couldn't recognize a hag in that flickering sprite. I saw some sort of unrecognizable blotch. I was told it was a ghost by my cousin, so I believed it. Oh, well... just a personal memory-oddity. Everybody has these, I suppose!
Dogfights were a nightmare on the C64, not least due to the lousy framerate. The 16 bit versions were _much_ more forgiving and managable. As soon as you could afford a military laser in the rear position, you could always just flee from attackers and pick them off with the 6:00 gun - something that was not possible on the 64 version.
Be awesome to be able to shoot behind!! That feature was definitely lacking 😇🕹👌
I played this game quite a lot, although I was always disappointed that I never got offered any of the missions. That's probably because I bought the galactic hyperspace jump as soon as I could afford it, and then used used it. I probably did the same in the second galaxy, so by the time I reached the rank where I'd be offered missions, I'd already moved past the galaxies that you get them in. I was very disappointed with the Amiga version. Initially, I liked it with it's fast and smooth graphics, but the more I played it, the more empty it felt. Unlike the 8-bit versions, there are no friendly or neutral ships. Any time you encounter another ship(or ships) while jumping toward a planet, they're ALWAYS hostile. It feels more like a shooting gallery than a living universe. Thargoids are also supposed to be the enemy of all other races, but they show up alongside other prates. I was once bumping up my kill rating by sitting just outside the safe zone on an anarchy world, waiting for pirates to attack, flying inside the safe zone so that they would break off, and then flying back out to destroy them one at a time. Eventually, a Thargoid showed up, but it didn't break off when I entered the safe zone. I decided to fly to the station and the Thargoid followed me, hammering my ship all the way. I eventually decided to return fire. The station immediately launched police Vipers, who came out and helped the Thargoid kill me. Today, a worthy successor to Elite is the freeware Oolite. It's like an updated version of Elite, with the base game having all the same ships, all the same planets, all the same cargo, etc. You can also easily expand it by just dropping expansions into the add-ons directory, no complicated install process needed, and removing them is just as easy. Oolite portrays a living universe where other ships go about their business independent of the player. On the downside, it's not unusual to get jumped by a pack of 20+ pirates at once. If you're lucky, you may get help from nearby ships, or you may just get blown to pieces. Oh and the one time I encountered a Thargoid ship near a star, it wrecked me in seconds as they no longer seem to have a front and back and can fire constantly no matter what angle or direction the ship is facing.
A good write up of events, some good nostalgia right here even though you had a few snags along the way. I'll definitely check out Oolite when I get the chance, sounds interesting! I'll be able to get into that 😇🕹👌
I remember having to restart so many times because we accidentally knocked the c64. And the infernal docking computer that would sometimes drive straight into the side of the station. curses!
Haha yeah it would glitch for me too and just drive me straight into the side of the wall 😆🕹👌
This is definitely one of my favourite games, I have played this on so many different Computers. Genius programming all the way.
Superb isn't it. I suppose the ultimate version was on the Beeb... even so, decent enough on the C64 too 😇🕹👌
Loved the game, and loved the music! I remember I had this as my ringtone in the early 2000's on my flip phone! Thanks for the nod to Lord of Dragonspire. That's what I'm talking about...recommending other games that I didn't have when I was younger. We used to have 'copy parties' where friends would bring their game disks, and we'd use Nibbler or Fast Hackem to copy disks (e.g., pirate)...yes, I realize it was bad to do that now. :)
Lord Of Dragonspire is good.... but boy is it tough! I didn't get anywhere near the end without a trainer. I suppose nothing will beat the original Master Of Magic. I'd love for Richard Darling to do a remake, or a sequel! In fact, I might have to send some tweets out to him to suggest this! haha 😇🕹️👌
