Welcome to the Cheeky Commodore Gamer Channel where I bring clips of C64 (Commodore 64) & Commodore Amiga games from yesteryear for you to browse through, listen to the SID tunes, see snippets from levels within the game - ultimately, to tantalise your nostalgia senses and bring back those fantastic memories from your youth
There may be times here and there when I consult the great reviewers of the 80s for inspiration, yet the games on the channel are timeless to me. Sometimes a little help with the context of narration is always welcomed from the professionals who reviewed these games the first time around 😇🕹👌

PROJECT STEALTH FIGHTER | Commodore 64 (1987)
Project Stealth Fighter, for the Commodore 64, was the original 8-bit predecessor to the now better known F-19 Stealth Fighter. Take control of a top secret classified Lockheed F-19 and fly missions in Libya, the Persian Gulf, Scandinavia, and Central Europe, with a variety of selectable mission parameters such as rules of engagement, escalation of conflict, risk, type of target, and skill levels with regards to landing and fighting.
Similar in scope and design to F-19 Stealth Fighter, but otherwise a completely different game, with graphics and physics more aligned with the capabilities of Gunship than with its 16-bit remake, completely lacking its speed, polygonal complexity, and features such as external chase camera, tactical views, and side/rear views.

I had this on cassettes, every mission a different game. At least the magazine provided with the cassette had instructions so we could play with that. Me and my brother played it with our dad, I remember us reading the instructions, just talking off was a success! Now that I see it again, what a game for 1988...
I'd love to see a few reviews of absolute dogshit and see what you say about them. I'm thinking stuff like Karnov, Cobra, Chase HQ, WEC LeMans etc. Mix it up with some absolute turkeys every now and again. If you want to stick to good early games, Gyruss, Mr Do's Castle, Loco etc would all be great to hear your thoughts on.
Cobra is on the channel, Chase HQ is on the channel... hehe - keep checking all of the playlists, there's plenty of dogshit to be found amongst the classics too - no games are left and eventually I plan on covering them ALL 😇🕹️👌
I had a copy of this, but didn't have the manual, so I never got very far with it. As I recall, the design of the plane was based on a model kit released by one of the big plastic model companies. Nobody knew what the stealth fighter would look like, so they just created their own design.
Without a manual this was a real struggle I imagine! But once you properly get to grips with all of the controls it becomes truly legendary. As for the model plane, thats pretty interesting to learn! Cool😇🕹️👌
The Amiga version was my first proper flight sim. That and F-117 are my absolute favourites.
The Amiga was a bit more of a more suited powerhouse for flight sims... where you could really get your teeth into a game. I say that now, retrospectively of course... it still amazes me just how much they could cram into those games back in the day. Nowadays the graphics are mindblowing on modern flight sims, but I'll always have nostalgia for these earlier titles 😇🕹️👌
It amazes me every time how much they can put into just 64kb.
And me! To think that we started off with games like 'Kickman' and 'Radar Rat Race'... the Commodore 64 showed just how powerful it was, year after year after year 😇🕹️👌
I have to give a lot of credit to anyone who tries to push the old C64 beyond its intended capabilities. Considering the complexity it seems to move along at a reasonable pace graphically, though I'd like to see how it plays with an accelerator such as the CMD SuperCPU (at 20mhz) or via the clock speed increases available in most C64 emulators.
I did actually try experiementing with the speed using an emulator but it never felt right not being in it's native speed... however, for 1st time players it might be an idea to speed it up maybe 20% so it doesn't feel as sluggish. Still, for 87', this was one of the best games I'd ever laid my hands on 😇🕹️👌
Man, I remember looking at the box art for this back in the day and being so jealous of C64 owners. 9I had a ZX Spectrum). I eventually played the excellent 16 bit versions (which I still enjoy today.) But now that I have finally bought a C64, it’s finally time for me to give this a go….
I was always super jealous that we never received Back To Skool on the Commodore 64 and my good friend had it on his ZX Spectrum! Haha. Definitely get this fired up but be mindful that without the keyboard overlay there might be a learning curve until you've gathered which controls do what. Worth persevering with though definitely 😇🕹️👌
Whilst modern gamers might be horrified by frame rates etc.,I had a blast with it. Normally was bored stiff by most "sim" games, but greatly appreciated how you could have a beginner mode that left you pretty much invulnerable as far as landings etc went & you could get stuck into stealthing your way to targets & take them out. Like you say, apart from the security checks with the manual, the keyboard overlay was a must! Makes playing it on emulation a bit hit & miss now!
I agree that games like this are definitely easier to play on the native C64 than on an emulator without the overlay! I had to scribble the controls down on a separate piece of paper which was a bit annoying 😇🕹️👌
Relatively speaking the frame rate isn't that bad! I remember some flight sims on the Amiga with similar. Looks great for the C64!
Back in the day, we didn’t really mind the lack of speed-honestly, it was sometimes a blessing in disguise! It gave us precious moments to gather our thoughts, strategise, and, let’s be honest, desperately fumble around for the right keys on the keyboard. Who knew slow gameplay could double as a stress reliever? Good times, indeed! 😇🕹️👌
The c64 era blows my mind on how creative, strange and different the games were. Now a days, pretty much everything is created according to a genre/subgenre standard. 99% of game devs in 2024 would not be able to conceive of such a wild and particular concept like Flunky, or so many other C64 games. It's a bit like watching the first ever films that were made, before the lexicon and conventions of genre, there is an era of more unrestrained creativity that's really novel.
The amount of individual genres of games to have been created on the 8-bit machines is mindblowing. It was a bit of a free-for-all in the 80s and I loved everything those developers used to throw at me back then 😇🕹️👌
Long marathons of playing this and Airborne Ranger to see how many missions I could complete. I had a photocopy of the overlay and had to figure out everything on my own since I didnt have the manual. After a few tries, I got the hang of it. Tons of fun shooting down F4s over Libya.
Ah, great memories! I absolutely loved Airborne Ranger too-poured countless hours into it. It’s like the game turned me into a pixelated Rambo with a very flexible school schedule! By the way, it’s hanging out on the channel here too, waiting to relive its glory days! th-cam.com/video/HBGHNeQZrYY/w-d-xo.html 😇🕹️👌
I had this,F15 strike Eagle 2 and 3, and Gunship. Microprose simulations were the best around by far.
I agree.. there were so many classic flight sims for our beloved C64! Infiltrator, F-14 Tomcat, ACE: Air Combat Emulator, Super Huey... just loads! I'm hoping to have a mammoth session playing some of them so I can start adding them to the channel 😇🕹️👌
What's your favourite Flight Simulator for the Commodore 64? 😇🕹👌 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= More from 1987: tinyurl.com/1987-C64-GAMES My Top Picks: tinyurl.com/CCGS-BEST-GAMES
Really great game in my opinion :)
Superb flight sim and massively impressive for it's time 😇🕹️👌
I really enjoyed this, an excellent shoot 'em up, especially for 1984. The rendition of Ride of The Valkyries really sets the atmosphere, this was before musicians like Rob Hubbard learnt to use the SID chip to it's full potential too.
The SID chip was like Pandora’s box-but with better basslines! Once the real musicians got their hands on that magical synth, they unleashed an unstoppable symphony of bleeps, bloops, and brain-melting arpeggios. The result was a glorious cacophony of sound that turned our trusty Commodore 64 into an 8-bit disco inferno. 😇🕹️👌
impressive game! had no clue how to play simulators back then
Definitely required patience and time - but for those who didn't find large game manuals daunting, it was a superb game and will be one that many will have pumped hours and hours into 😇🕹️👌
Fantastic this was, along with 'Gunship' Microprose was spot on back then.
I agree - and then the wonderful 'Pirates!'. Microprose was genuinely the gift that kept on giving 😇🕹️👌
On cassette? Pretty impressive.
Yeah - it was a multi-loader, but on two tapes, so not the longest game by MicroProse 😇🕹️👌
Honestly, as a simulator, this game was dreadful. Simplistic flight model, terrible vector graphics, and frame rate of 2-3 FPS 😁 However, it had something. Maybe because we were kids, and dreamed of becoming pilots. And this was the closest you could get . All those commands on keyboard just made thing look more real. You had to learn them to be successful, felt like you were accomplishing something. And when you played night mission in a dark room, somehow even that dreadful graphics felt genuine. You had your instruments, your mission, and hum of engines in background. Imagination would fill in the gaps left by game and modest 8-bit computer.
Very nostalgic memories playing this though, even though it is definitely sluggish by modern standards hehe. All we needed back then was patience and a great imagination... ahh the simpler times in life. I miss those days 😇🕹️👌
I loved Microprose games. I had this first on C64 on cassette, it took ages to play just one mission. I got a 1541 and the disc version, played it even more. Actually pretty fast loading. Later I replayed all the missions on my ST. I loved it! Red Storm Rising, Gunship and Silent Service was also fantastic games!
Ahh yeah I remember Red Storm Rising, that was another great too! I also loved Wing Commander for my Amiga 😇🕹️👌
I loved flight sims on the commodore. From my first, Pilot64 and all the way through until i swapped systems in the late 80s. Ace of Aces was superb, Gunship was mind blowing for it's time and love PSF too. Microprose was the literal god of sims!! Every game packed with a large manual and all the information you needed from how to fly down to the tech specs of the weapons. Such a great time to be alive. I dare you to play Pilot64 and see if you can land, i managed it once! lol.
Challenge accepted - Pilot64 will have to be added for a future video 😇🕹️👌
200mm cannon 😂. I had this casette version. Loading took while
Gah! I actually typed 20mm into my script... but for some reason I actually SAID 200mm... but it was too late to change. DOH. Ron Burgandy moment 😇🕹️👌
I could see myself spending hours and hours on this as a child....with no clue about what I'm doing lol.
There were loads of games like that for me haha. It always seemed to be that the better looking graphics the game had, the more confusing it would be to play! 😇🕹️👌
I’m always amazed at the skill of the programmers in the 80’s to fit so much into such a tiny weeny amount of memory. Modern machines and PC’s have so much memory upwards of 16gb, the C64 had 0.00064gb (I think) and some of that was ROM so not even that much. Truly incredible. Looks like a great game but I never played it.
Divide by 10 and you'd be correct, it's even less at 0.000064GB or 0.064Mb (ignoring the definition of a Mb being either 1000kb or 1024kb etc). Truly remarkable to get a 3D game in such limited RAM.
I agree, it always blows my mind how developers managed to cram so much into so little memory. It seems impossible to think back now, knowing how much memory modern games require! 😇🕹️👌
I not only played this game, I still have the model of the F-19 sitting on my shelf.
Ahh awesome, pure nostalgia right there 😇🕹️👌
Loved it's predecessor Gunship. Sank a lot of time in that one. Incredibly polished, and then some ('C128 enhanced). Great to see that MicroProse kept raising the bar
Ahh yes, I definitely need to play that one too sometime. I fear that for Gunship, I'd need to re-read that manual again for the control system! But it's definitely worth it as it was another truly fine classic indeed 😇🕹️👌
Keyboard overlays are nice aren't they? Also helps with immersion. As does the doorstop manual. Not really my cup of tea this but I do love that it exists. As if that makes any sense. It's definitely a stellar effort from Microprose on the C64! 👍
Was a good invention to have an overlay for the keyboard back then... they should do that more often, I'd like to believe that theres an augmented reality future where games have tabs showing what buttons do what!!! Haha but thats some sci-fi stuff we probably wont see in this lifetime 😇🕹️👌
I think I remember trying this game... and being completely lost. Not having the manual... because of the way I obtained it. LOL It wasn't like Skyfox where you could just pick it up and play it without knowing much about it. I would imagine this game, however, would have much more to offer for someone who had the instructions and knew what they were doing.
Flight sims on copy were impossible to figure out haha, I remember when I had a copy of 'Civilisation' too and didn't have the foggiest idea of what was going on! The manual it came with was a beast... but it definitely was essential for this game. That and the keyboard overlay 😇🕹️👌
Had a friend who was obssessed with this game. Didn't play it myself but enjoyed watching him play it.
For fans of flight sims, especially back in the 80s.. this was the cream of the crop. Well, this one and 'Gunship' from the previous year - I know people who go 'all out' when it comes to flight sims and their set-ups look amazing for modern machines! Its a niche' area of gaming, but for people who love the genre this was certainly a show stopping classic 😇🕹️👌
Didn't see this one coming 🤣🤣
Hehe - I'm sure there will be many more surprised along the way 😇🕹️👌
MPS made tape versions of these complex simulators during 80's. Disk-based software can get quite serious and complex, but having this kind of complexity on tapes - is extraordinary. This one also worked on ZX Spectrum 48K tapes. Cudos to Amiga, but it was 512K RAM machine, and 880K fast floppy drive. This game was designed to work on kitchen toasters and rolling cassette ribbon! Now, that is something that gives me everlasting thrill. Cramming so much into small machine, with so little resources. Microprose ruled the 8-bit world. No company managed to give so much... dignity (!) - to these small 8-bitters & tape drives. Simulating these things really made one feel its little modest "gaming" computer was heavy real time data processing system, doing extremely serious stuff. And being also enormous learning platform about everything out there in the real world. I mean, operating state of the art machines / weaponry and diving into strategies and tactics in missions that the whole world may depend on... absolutely mind blowing. Politics, military, engineering, controlling, piloting... again, on my cassette?? Wow!
Microprose games were all super technical, massively playable and absolutely mindblowing! What an era to have grown up with these sorts of games being released. Jaw dropping stuff for 87' 😇🕹️👌
Microprose was playing on another level in that era.
Absolutely - it was a sign of pure class when a game was released under the Microprose banner 😇🕹️👌
Didn't understand this as a kid, now I love it. great graphics
Awesome - the sprites are really great are't they. Flunky looks like a loveable dork haha 😇🕹️👌
I really enjoyed this game as a kid.
I remember thinking that the manual was really daunting to read as a kid... but I had a lot more patience back then and studied up on it. Project Stealth quickly became one of my favourite flight sims of all time 😇🕹️👌
Was a bit flight sim fan. From F15, F16, F117A and a bunch of other. Always enjoyed going through the 100 plus page manual and the keyboard overlay was also so helpful in a mid fight mission. Many on the old Commodore 64, then the Amiga versions and some PC versions also. Always inverted...
I usually play inverted controls for flight games.. just feels 'right' doesn't it! 😇🕹️👌
@CheekyCommodoreGamer Indeed . Inverted just feels so natural. 👍 🎮
unbelievable what the c64 was capable of... for that few k of ram thats really impressive.
It always astounds me just how brilliant the Commodore 64 actually is 😇🕹️👌
Played it many hours on the C64. The big thing Gunship had over this was filled polygons for hills and mountain ranges. Microprose ruled back then^^
Very true - hopefully I'll get around to that one too in the near future 😇🕹️👌
I regret selling my copy yrs ago. I got it as a bday gift. Great game
Gah! Yeah it's a really nice box too... I'm looking to get all of the Microprose games over time, as they look great on display 😇🕹️👌
Having grown up in the 80s and 90s with these flight sims, I get absolutely lost with the flight sims today.
I wouldnt know where to begin... although I've always wanted to get into Microsoft Flight Simulator - just looks very complicated 😇🕹️👌
Wow! I used to love F-19 and F-117 on the PC, but never knew about this Commodore precursor.
Yeah! Microprose belted out some absolute bangers for the Commodore 64 😇🕹️👌
Great game!
Brilliant, put lots of hours into this back in the day 😇🕹️👌
I have played many of the MicroProse games on my Commodore 64 and Amiga 500 😺👍. But not, this one 😹. 1:53 - "North Cape of Finland." HYVÄ SUOMI 🇫🇮 😺👍🕹️!
Always nice when you hear me mention the motherland 🇫🇮🇫🇮 😇🕹️👌
I had this but it was called Mad Flunky on the Alternative Software label. Originally, it was just Flunky.
Yeah, I wonder why they added 'Mad' before it... no idea 😇🕹️👌
The mini game aspect kind of reminds me of Lazy Jones...I used to play that a LOT.
Great game love that one too... check out the review if you haven't already here >> th-cam.com/video/18aR-gTJwGE/w-d-xo.html 😇🕹️👌
Presumably multi-load?
I remember the disk version not being too bad with loads... yet, I tend to use emulators for these games so you can quickly warp any loading (for that very reason - along with preserving any originals) 😇🕹👌
Was thinking about this game yesterday and what do I find on my feed this morning? I’m definitely keeping up with the Cheeky Commodore Gamer!
Great minds think alike hehe!! Glad you're enjoying these nostalgic videos 😇🕹️👌
Was this converted from zx spectrum? , gfx look like it
Yeah, Don Priestley's games were primarily developed on the ZX Spectrum and then ported to the C64 😇🕹️👌
@CheekyCommodoreGamer ahh ya i thought so its pretty clear from the gfx 😊
I'm pretty sure this is the spectrum version
