I have to agree with you there, definitely one of the very best. And I remember the super fast load times on cassette as a kid, so this was my go-to game to play straight after school back in 85' 😇🕹👌
We were crazy about droids back then ... Star Wars, The Black Hole, Buck Rogers, ... This game tapped perfectly into the droid folklore and the implementation is spotless. Love it
You're right, it was an age of sci-fi where droids were prevalent in many movies... most of them being humanoid. I particulatly liked the droid Twiki from Buck Rogers as a kid... ha, good ole Mel Blanc. Great game this, love it 😇🕹️👌
There was a whole diary of events from the developer Andrew Braybrook documenting his development of this awesome game, its a good read if you could find it with a quick google search. Great insight into the mind of a programming genius 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer I remember reading his development diary. Fascinating. And the game turned out to be brilliant. He did another development diary for Uridium.
I'll always prefer the C64 version as I thought the simple colours worked much better than the Amiga version - mind you, I guess it's all a case of which computer you played it on first. Paradroid will always be one of the best games ever made in my opinion 😇🕹️👌
I was this years old when I today (watching your Sanxion clip) realised Paradroid must be a combination of the words Parasite and Android. An epic measurement of being slow there. A personal favorite of course. Who could not love this game?
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer Yeah I watched the stream actually (Passively. Was playing Valheim with my wife and friends on the other monitor). Weird with the level colors being wonky. Anyway, indeed another classic that sadly haven't been replicated since from what I know. Elements from it could theoretically be implemented in so many other type of games. Like I think someone suggested on the chat yesterday, turning it into a rogue-like.
Andrew Braybrook. What a boss-eyed genius. He made some cracking games. Most loved Uridium, but it was too beastly for me. I think I lacked the reflexes to really get good with it. I was on the Paradroid and Alleykat level. Loved those games. Oh Gribbly's Day Out as well. Goofy weird oddball game that. That crab fucker scared the shit out of me.
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer haha, yeah a little, but I don't disguise my appreciation for the guy. He made some amazing games, and like the Bitmap Brothers, he had a certain 'style' all of his own that screamed Braybrook. He's hard-stamped into my gaming history to the point where I remember him several decades later. 😁
One of the absolute all-time classics on the C64. To be honest: i never got much into the game back then...but it's on my replay-list. Abgefahren!!! 😉👍
Definitely need to replay this game as its even better playing it as an adult haha it has been for me. The new Paradroid is on the Evercade C64 vol 3 too. I need to buy that someday! Verrücktheit! 😇🕹👌
Before i played the original PARADROID for the first time on my C64 Mini console, i played PARADROID 90 a lot on my Amiga 500 back in the early 1990's. At first, it was complicated 😹, but then i mastered my gameplay as much as i could 😺👍🕹️. ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT 😺👍🕹️!
I found Paradroid 90 a massive letdown. Vertical only scrolling due to the Atari ST's naff hardware really sucked, but drawing the robots as these bizarre creatures where you couldn't tell if it was a strong robot or an absolute piece of junk was the real killer. This was definitely a case of simpler is better. The C64's simpler and clearer graphics definitely made the gameplay better than the bizarre robots on the poor Amiga.
@@Codetapper Agreed. I was massively disappointed by the Amiga version. The lack of horizontal scrolling made it a nonsense - and the low-ish frame rate added insult to injury. Alien Breed demonstrated that you could do exactly this kind of game in 32 colours at 50 fps.
it's a tremendously achieved concept that I don't think has anything that can be labeled negative. The 16 versions which I also rather like did have an option to disable the very good transfer section giving a more immediate action based game so I guess you could say that the lack of such an option for the C64 version is really the only thing you could say as a negative. I like playing both modes personally
It's such a simple concept with simple graphics/sfx - but it is still to this day one of my fave c64 games. When people actually used their imagination way more back in the 80s, a very much younger me always imagined this in my mind as a ship with all kinds of robots like Daleks and other robots from TV series of the time. Superb game!
One of my all time favourite games and, like yourself, I'd use my imagination as a kid when playing this and imagine all the droids as their 3D representations... superb game this 😇🕹️👌
Haha yeah I definitely can see what you mean... I almost felt sorry for the 001 droid, with his little 'brain' like being encapsulated in a helmet. Would have made a great short story if anyone made it into such; or an animated short film 😇🕹️👌
Absolutely smashing game. i was buzzing when i cleared that first ship back in '89. great puzzles, exploring and fun action. they certainly don't make them like this anymore.
Andrew Braybrook is a genius when it comes to creating games which are simple yet thoroughly captivating. This was such a game... and the sub-game droid transfer mechanism was genuis I thought. Risky business trying to transfer from droid to droid, but rewarding all the same one you managed to pull off a great transfer from a lowly droid to a more powerful one. There was always a great sense of accomplishment😇🕹️👌
The title would have sold it to me right off. Seems quite in-depth and I will admit, I am confused as to what to do, but will watch the video again, as I am easily confused. It is a Canadian thing.
The 'robot transfer' mini-game becomes second nature after a couple of attempts, just bare in mind that the higher level the droid, the more 'attempts' they have to send colours to the central block. So dont go trying to transfer from a 001 droid to say... a 711, unless you get extremely lucky. I've done it 001 to 999 droid a couple of times as a kid, but just by pure luck! 😇🕹️👌
another very watchable video cheers. Paradroid is a great example of a tremendous game remaining so regardless of how long after people discover it. The best games are timeless because they always were brilliant to begin with
I agree with you there, the games which will always stand out are usually the simplest. I still believe that every newcomer to gaming should start off on Commodore 64 games at an early age, because they're easy to pick up and play without the complexities of more modern games 😇🕹️👌
I wasn't smart enough for this game back in the days. But I did love the style and graphics. No doubt one of the best c64 games. Played it recently and it kept me going for an entire weekend. Great video!
Its the type of game that you can really get your teeth into isn't it. Lazy afternoon... nothing planned... stick on Paradroid and try to complete it after all these years. All of the ships, that is 😇🕹️👌
Ah yes, Steve Turner took that on himself and I must admit he did a decent job - it was a shame that the Spectrum couldn't handle screen-scrolling as smoothly as the C64, but Steve developed 'Ziggurat', the isometric landscape engine. The rest was history 😇🕹️👌
Absolutely, it's just as addictive now as it was back in 85'... but now you have the knowledge of what to do you'll definitely be able to get into it more 😇🕹️👌
I somehow managed to fry my audio chip so I played without sound... And also the part when you fight over control of another droid was broken so you'd always win. Something to do with the random generator. I think the audi chip does random generating in C64 ...
I wish I had that version of the game! I'd always panic on the later stages in the mini-game... it seemed to get really hectic when transferring with a higher level droid 😇🕹️👌
One of my proudest moments as a kid was taking over the Command Cyborg with the 001 influence unit! I got the absolute luckiest setup possible and pulled it out despite the massive amount of movements he had. The sad part was the descrepancy was so great I only had control for a few seconds before it blew out :( Clever programming for the time. Loved Paradroid and luckily there are many remakes and improved versions today on PC.
That's the only problem with the 999 droid, spending all the game searching for him and taking him over... only to discover he lasts only about 30 seconds. Sounds like my quest to lose my virginity in my late teens 🤣🤣🤣🕹👌
One thing that always bugged me was that I never knew when I could recharge my droid and when I couldn't. Sometimes moving onto one of the charging pads worked, and sometimes it didn't. "Oh no, my droid is flashing! Should I take the time to find a charging station, knowing that it may not work, or do I transfer to the only available droid, even though it's four levels below what I have now?" Also, I also found it a little annoying that 99% of the time you bump into a door and get bounced back before it opens and you can go through. Yes, if you approach it slowly, it opens for you, but who moves around the ship that slowly? So you almost always end up bumping the door before it opens.
Yes the charging pads only work if you have enough score as it takes it from your total, but also won't completely replenish your droid to prevent you sticking with the 001 droid throughout the game I believe. As for bumping into doors haha yeah, you need to kind of allow for the inertia and approach them slowly. Not good when trying to outrun attacking droids that's for sure 😇🕹👌
This is another of those games I remember playing and enjoying, but didn't really understand (having no instructions at the time could have been a factor). What's funny is that I played a game on Steam called Droid Assault by Puppygames. I saw in the forum comments hat the concept was similar to Paradroid in that you transfer control from one droid to another. I may have to go back and replay Paradroid... I may be able to make progress with it now that I understand the conecpt.
You should definitely re-play this game now you know what to do... as even though almost 40 years has passed since it's release - it's still just as good of a game today as it was back then 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamerI thought of another game that seems similar in the concept of taking over robots... but it's really crazy.
