    This makes me wish that the Marvel Masterworks (and Omnibuses) were printed on non-glossy matt paper too. The colours always look better that way. Never understood why it has to be glossy. Old comic-books were NOT glossy! Looks like Penguin is outdoing Marvel at its own game here.

      Yes, I think they are definitely the omnibus series that should have been. I really love them

    Thanks for the overview. I have the Black Panther collection on order. There`s an Omnibus scheduled for October but since I only wanted Panther`s Rage story, this is perfect. Just right for reading.

      thank you, I was not intending to get them all but I enjoyed the Cap one and then bought the Black Panther one and thought, why not get the full set. Will probably continue with the next ones, though no idea if it will be the Avengers etc (though again, covers material I already have). Don't know if they have been turning up in the local bookshops, I assume the London FP has got them and Foyles etc

    And the answer is ... yes! Black Panther from Jungle Action was reprinted in Marvel UK's Planet of The Apes weekly, starting roughly around issue 60, though I'm not sure which issues or for how long as Ka-Zar and Man Thing showed up soon after (and Warlock and Unknown Worlds of Science Fiction and some Marvel Preview before it)

    • @AndrewBuckleBookReviews
      @AndrewBuckleBookReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      thank you, didn't realise that about the Black Panther, I should have remembered those as I am certain I was still collecting the POTA at the time, certainly would have collected them for the Ka-Zar ones and likewise the Warlock and UWOSF. Can't imagine that the Black Panther covered many issues of the Jungle Action comic or the Black Panther ones though.

      Yes, those Folio Society ones are amazing as well but extremely expensive. There was a recent release and it was £750 or so for Gormenghast (Dave McKean illustrations), just way too expensive for me (unless I win the lottery this evening !)

    • @davidhume7260
      @davidhume7260 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm hoping for a more affordable Folio edition of that Dave McKean Gormenghast edition in the future. It does look beautiful. But *how much*???!!! I'd be too scared to read it even if I could afford to buy it...

    • @AndrewBuckleBookReviews
      @AndrewBuckleBookReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a crazy price, I am not going to pay £750 for it and I would love to see a more affordable version but that does seem to be the way things are going. Probably see collector editions at 1000+, 2000+ etc at some point (Bob Dylan and his Blowing in the wind single record for 1.5 million). Not for me, prefer them to be more affordable and for everyone

    Do you remember the Spiderman newspaper comic strips? I'm collecting its compilations but they stop it at vol. 5 just before the wedding and before the Larry Lieber era. It's a shame because he was doing the strip for over 30 years 🧐

    • @AndrewBuckleBookReviews
      @AndrewBuckleBookReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have only one volume of the Spiderman newspaper comic strips, never really saw them here in the UK (I don't know if they were in any UK paper either). It would be great to see them in omnibus form and complete. There were others, Conan comes to mind. I always wanted, but never could get a copy (and not for want of trying) of the Wonder Woman series

      @@AndrewBuckleBookReviews if you think it's difficult in the UK imagine in LATAM but still to me is worthy to import and you're right a Conan compilation would be great. Another would be a Steve Ditko's Mr. A Omnibus because I hear his nephew was preparing one

    • @AndrewBuckleBookReviews
      @AndrewBuckleBookReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are a lot of Steve Ditko's on Kickstarter with Robin Synder. I have a few of them. I know, I should not complain about certain volumes that are not available, we are fairly lucky here in the UK with the comics / TPB we get plus the shops etc. I still occasionally whinge about some volumes that are only available in the US though but then I suspect they moan about some of the books that are generally only available here. I love books from all around the world, and often see books mentioned that I know I will never find in a million years here.

    Great looking books the covers alone are worth they admission fee along with the great looking paper stock , they remind me of bound comic books I hope that they continue the covers in the same style sometimes the masterworks and omnibuses dont look quite right on the shelf but if they continue in this vain these are really going to stand out on any display.

    • @AndrewBuckleBookReviews
      @AndrewBuckleBookReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, they definitely will. As mentioned, the FF I assume will be blue as well, but the Avengers one ?? Not sure I can think of a colour for the Avengers ? X-Men, perhaps Amber ? Daredevil, Yellow or perhaps Red. Thor ?? Iron Man, Red / Yellow ? I suppose there are a limits on the colours. Sgt Fury, brown ?? Captain Marvel, Green ? Or Red / Blue ?

    • @captain_uk
      @captain_uk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AndrewBuckleBookReviews yeah i think they may go red with the Avengers or possibly green, X-men yeah amber would be good but I have a feeling they may go white, I think the FF has to be blue and Daredevil red or possibly yellow and black, brown sounds perfect for Sgt Fury and I would prefer green for Captain Marvel, I guess that they do have scope with Thor of going for a rainbow to represent the bridge.

    • @AndrewBuckleBookReviews
      @AndrewBuckleBookReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, White would be a good one for X-Men or perhaps glowing radioactive green for Mutants ? Red is a possible with the Avengers as Giant Man / Thor / Iron Man / Cap / Wasp etc all have red in their costumes. A rainbow one for Thor would be interesting, no reason why they need to go for a single colour. Millie The Model ? Patsy Walker ? (I doubt if we will see a penguin classic for them though)

      @@jonny9884 I had most of the essentials but got rid of many of them, wish I hadn't. Since then I have bought them as I find them, they often turn up in my local charity shop for £3 or so even for some of the more obscure ones and the same with the DC showcases. I don't think I have ever found a MMW via that though Omnis turn up in the shop, normally for about £50 or so. I certainly don't need all the complete sets, but if it is an interesting run I will try and pick up there or at the comic mart (essentials turn up there as well, normally for £5 or so in some cases). Looking forward to the next mart next week as I missed the last one (though we have a train strike again on comic mart weekend ... always seems to be the way). I would have loved all those MMW at the age of 8, I had lots of Fantastics / Terrifics (all in black and white) at that age.

      Apparently Marvel are going to start reprinting the hardback Masterworks from the beginning, in publication order, starting next year (?). But who knows how long it will take to get to the volumes I'm missing... Or if they even get that far.

    • @AndrewBuckleBookReviews
      @AndrewBuckleBookReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just hope they continue with the paperback series. I used to get the MMW paperbacks and then they stopped that, was hoping to get all the Atlas / Timely ones in that format. Hopefully this new format gets that far but it will be slow. They are on 200+ now (if not 300) so that is many, many years of volumes and I'll be over 70+ before they get to the current set of books at that rate. The HB ones would be great but they have always been very expensive, certainly relative to the omnibus volumes that often include 2 to 3 MMW. I have a number of them in Kindle format when they did specials for 99p or so for some of the MMW ones so I have a lot of the Atlas / Timely ones in that format which is fine enough for me.
