Comics / Books / BluRays Haul For December 1st 2024 Inc Spider-Man, Kull, Ka-Zar and more
Popped up to London for the regular London Comic Mart, here is a run through of the comics, books etc purchased as well as a few other items from last week's book fair in Holiday Inn. Great meeting for a chat Adam, look forward to seeing you next time. Bought a few comics and one I have been looking forward to buying since I was about 5 years old, so overall a great comic mart (hopefully for everyone else as well)

The Nancy Show Ernie Bushmiller Exhibition Catalogue Book Review
Fun review, thanks for the look! Would you care or dare to opine: were the 60's and 70's the most fun Marvel era?! Or did it just seem... Someone once said, the greatest era of comics is, for everyone, whenever you got to read them as a kid 😊
I was introduced to the Dark Side magazine via a local bookstore. I bought it and saw this ad, then searched for more info and came across your video. Thanks for going through the book in detail. I just ordered it!
Going to put up a review of their annual, just came out - all about Hammer films. The Italian Horrors book is excellent, a curse because I have ended up buying many blurays based on the films mentioned.
Could you give us the exact title of the Kirby Graphic Novel you mentioned at 7:32?

I think that if you had a camera affixed as a head torch it would simplify the camera work as you would be able to flip through the pages more easily whilst the head camera is filming 🤔👍🏻
Yes, but I don't want to do that ... I am not doing flip through videos, this is a discussion / review of the book. Most books are easy to handle, this one is an exception
Is this the entire collection of all the issues of Marvel Fun & Games in a compilation book?
No idea, haven't got the originals to be able to compare so perhaps. I think it is the full set. If you know the page count of the full set then it may match this volume.
I have this book. Beautiful! My second favorite comic strip (after Peanuts).
I have always loved his work, many different sets of stories over the years and Little Nemo is pretty amazing.
In a review of a graphic novel it would be great to see the internal pages
I show lots of the pages, as many as I think I should show. It is not a flip through or preview but a discussion / review of the book
@@AndrewBuckleBookReviews I see, your videos are about you
I used to love reading the Starburst magazine , a must read for all sci fi and fantasy movie fans .
It is a brilliant book and the magazine was always my favourite read, haven't picked it up in a while (is it still going ? can't say I have seen it in my local WHS). I used to also pick up Starlog but Starburst was easily my favourite
That looks great , i love reading through very old newspapers .
Likewise, pity it isn't easy to find them - though I suspect ebay but most are US ones. I have a few old ones such as the 1963 Kennedy, Moonlanding etc
Its great not to get a glimpse of the interior
As I showed loads of pages of the interior, I give up answering comments.
My copy arrived today. GREAT book, excellent value.
Yes, an impressive book ! Looking forward to the next release as well.
You would receive a lot more views if you showed the books
Yes, but not interested in doing that
Hey! I love your videos! Do you have a way of contacting you? I do social media for the channel, Near Mint Condition. We are working on a year end video highlighting comics youtubers and their favorite read of the year. I want you to be part of it, but I have to contact you with the details. If you don't want to share it here, all my social media platforms are on my channel and you can DM me or email me through those!
I just love the penguin ones. I always keep my eyes peeled for them to add to my collection but they are so hard to find.
They are, especially the ones that came out in the 70s. Certain they were A4 and white and full of listings and covers etc and picked up tons of them, sadly, they ended up in the bin monthly and I guess others did the same
Wow! Huge amount of new titles for your collection. Thank you for sharing.
Yes, a decent haul - got a lot of the titles that I wanted to add to. Glad you liked the video
Nice haul! Fun fact - That Film "Black Sabbath" was where the heavy metal band took their name.
A band I have seen a few times as well, love heavy metal music. I have yet to see the film though, watching a horror movie that I bought a few weeks back.
Andrew, I just LOVE your enthusiasm for the books you buy! It makes such a change from usual speculators who seem to be everywhere on TH-cam. I'm like you, I don't see any problem with a tatty comic.! If someone offered me a 9.8 Incredible Hulk 181 or a thousand tatty interesting comics , I would be breaking my back carrying that big pile of fun home with me! It's always been about the story and the art with me. I'm happy with a reprint, just as long as I can read the story. I'm not a "key issue" or a slab person and I'm glad I don't have to worry if my collection isn't worth as much as it was last week. I get fed up with people saying a comic is "worthless" just because it hasn't got a first appearance in it... Those people seem to forget all the time and effort that has gone into producing that book... Thankfully, I just don't get it! By the way Andrew, I was the guy who wrote that letter that mentioned you in Infinity magazine. I have been with you and your channel back from the days when you used to forget to show us anything inside the books you were reviewing! 😂 It's just brilliant that you find good in everything and your enthusiasm is so genuine. I have bought loads of books because of your reviews and hope you keep up this fine channel for as long as possible. Thank you Sir for all your efforts!🤟
thank you for your thoughts and also the mention in Infinity. I still don't show that much, not one for that - I get a lot of complaints but that is just the way I do my videos. I agree, a Hulk 181 means nothing to me if it is slabbed or if it is in a NM state that makes me worry that the slightest crease will reduce it by 100 quid or so. If it was a tatty and torn 181, would be happy for it as with many others I have such as Tales of suspense 40 or Strange Tales 101, love reading them and they fall apart more and more with each read. It is disappointing that the whole thing is based around a first appearance or a prototype or first work by an artist etc and then it has to be a 9.8 etc, not for me in the slightest. I would also go for the 1000+ tatty ones as well, that is how I have always bought my comics. They are to be read to pieces. I also agree, none of them are worthless. I have no problems with the speculators though, that has been the case probably since day 1 but as long as you can still find the occasional gems in the very rough state, I am happy. I don't think my collection is worth much at all, but they are all special to me. I am also happy just to read them in epics or other forms Intend to keep the channel going, no plans to stop. May change the format over time, I love blurays so there are times I often put those in or I will cover other things like ebay etc (I have my other channels and they are mix of things as well)
It's great to know there are kindred spirits out there! Anyway Andrew, I have some good news/bad news for you. You know those Ka-Zar comics you wish Marvel would reprint? Well, they already did... They bought them out in three volumes as part of their "Marvel Masterworks" series, with a fourth one due to come out early next year according to Amazon! Trouble is, you would have to sell a raw Hulk 181 to be able to afford them! I don't know why, but they are very pricey indeed. If I win a decent amount on the lottery this weekend I will treat you to them, otherwise you will probably have to raid the old piggy bank I'm afraid. It's one of those times when you have to ask yourself if you really need something or not. On a separate subject, seeing that Past Perfect Conan special reminded me to ask if you ever saw/bought the three Roy Thomas "Barbarian Life" books he bought out a few years back? If you haven't seen them I fully recommend that you give them a try. I know you like Roy Thomas's work, well these books have him going into detail about his first 115 issue run on Conan the Barbarian (and a few others). I'm sure that these books will be right up your alley and they are easily found on Amazon for (as you would say) "A very affordable price"! Hope this has been of some help to you. Looking forward to your next video.🤘
Great selection, as always, Andrew. I cannot remember Vincent Price’s cookery show. The one I remember being on was the Galloping Gourmet. That was always fun to watch when I was a kid. My Mum and I would always like the bit where members of the studio audience would join him for a bite to eat:) I hope to either get to a London Comic Mart, or a Pulp event one day. My wife and I will be in London soon, so I will at least try and check out one of their comic shops during our stay. BTW, There is going to be a Mark Schultz, portfolio book published in January, which may be of interest to you. I have got a copy ordered as a late birthday present to myself :)
Thanks for the info about the book The Vincent Price show vanished into obscurity but I fondly remember it, more than Fanny Craddock. Not sure if they have ever bought out a bluray of the Galloping Gourmet but I remember those as well. The next comic mart is in February. The pulp fairs I think maybe next in December 2025 but perhaps more info about that on Facebook. Always wanted to go to one and always missed it because of work or choir or whatever. GOSH is my favourite comic shop, dead centre of Soho. Forbidden Planet is, of course, the big one but it is ok, it has some new competition with a manga / anime building recently opened next door. Used to be lots of stores but most are out of town, such as my favourite in Brighton. The one in Camden is shutting soon and the other central ones are long gone.
Thank you for your reply and London comic shop info:)
Hi Andrew, I did manage to go to GOSH comics. I do see what you mean, it is an excellent shop. I picked up 3 Conan comics and the first Red Sonia, which I was pleased with:)
Great to see you Andrew and thanks for the mention. Looks like you got a great haul. Keep up the good work.
Yes, great to meet you. I was pleased with the comics picked up this time. Headed back close to 4 and picked up the Spidey comic, was pondering it all the time while wandering around Oxford St.
@@AndrewBuckleBookReviews Yep, I left a few behind I now regret not picking up.
i did see the spider-man annual no 1 at the London comic mart, great book by the way.
I am quite certain a lot picked it up and put it back, I did earlier. I have wanted it for a while but realised it was 50% off, so it was time to buy it. A tatty issue but fine for me. I will print off a cover for it (perhaps)
I have most of the Kull run, need a few between #3 and #10. Most Ka-Zar issues as well, none of the Astonishing originals in my collection though. The Marvel Masterworks books have reached Ka-Zar issue #9 from 1975 (in Ka-Zar Vol. 3, Jan. 2023), hopefully they'll continue. Lots of his Savage Tales magazine stories in there.
Yes, I have one of the MMW but that is that, I have always generally gone for the epics or omnis. I have a number of the Kulls and all of the Astonishing but I am getting most of the Ka-Zar set afterwards. Still trying to get all the Red Sonja and Creatures on the Loose and so on. Years ago, probably had the whole runs of them ... I love the Savage Tales ones, got all of those in either omnis or actual issues. Often aim to complete the series but often there are some expensive single issues such as in 2001 etc making that hard to complete
There is a Kazar omnibus out in the market Don't know if it's in print now though
Yes, Ka-Zar the Savage, if that is the same one. A set of comics that came out a lot later than the Astonishing ones They have yet, unless it was a sneaked in release, to release a collection of the X-Men / Daredevil / Spidey / Astonishing / Lord of the Hidden Jungle set of omnis or epics. They have released a few marvel masterworks but generally I don't collect those.
Sir Did you pick up the DC Vs Marvel omni?
No, I had a look at it and some good stories, some I didn't particularly want. I have a lot of DC finest on order at the moment so slowing down on omnis
Wow I love your comics pickup choice
thank you, it was a good comic mart
Your vids hadn’t come up in my subscriptions in a while glad your back on it Granted im subscribed to way too many pages
I think I am the same with many of my subs, too many videos coming out and I suppose they can only shows so many. Personally I wish YT would be more like the Netflix approach and declutter the page and just show tons and tons of the thumbnails only so I would be able to see more thumbnails per page or so
I agree with your assessments of memorable films like Groundhog Day and Superman II. My older brother is a huge SF fan and he took me to films like Dune, Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back, and the Star Trek movies when each of those came out. A friend of mine in high school went to see Empire Strikes Back more than a dozen times in the theater when it was released! Thanks for the video - your friend Jim in Indiana
I don't think I saw Empire that often. I did see Star Wars about 10 times on release, I think that is the record for me for any film. It was reasonably priced to pop down to see a film at the cinema in the 70s. Now I would just re-watch it on bluray or 4K
Good stuff. Just discovered your channel and just subscribed
thank you, glad you enjoyed the videos
Good video. I always thought Black Hawk, Plastic Man, Uncle Sam and The Spirit were cool. Their golden age comics are still affordable compared to DC and Timely/Marvel.
Yes, I have picked up many reasonably priced Quality Comics such as Hit comics etc. Certainly a lot more affordable than any Timely title.
Thanks for sharing.
thank you
An interesting look back Andrew, I dont see myself being a buyer of this one but that said I would be delighted to receive one as a gift for Christmas etc, great review Andrew thanks for sharing.
Yes, probably not a book for everyone but I still thought an impressive book and one I am glad to have picked up, and a Xmas present of the book would have been good as well. I must have got the Calendars that way as well, though perhaps I bought them in Dark They Were ?
Thank you Andrew. You made an excellent point, those calendars may be reused in future years that align with them. Back then my allowance was only about $1 per week and I had to be judicious with respect to comics buying, so I tended not to buy merchandising like the calendars. But I sometimes received things as gifts, for example I got the 1979 Overstreet Guide as a junior high graduation present, and Christmas money was always welcome of course!
Got a lot of things related to comics and SF etc for Xmas. Last week picked up a couple of old price guides, got a few of things - no real use but they are fascinating to look at and a snapshot of the prices back in the 70s (well, in the states anyway). I generally don't buy the calendars now but the backlight (blacklight ?) one looked great and also I love the Vallejo one. Probably never use it as a calendar as I just use my phone. I was also very careful about the comics purchased but I would often pick up 20+ comics a month easily with my pocket money, got most of the comics available in my local shops.
Don't have 1 dandy book never read a dandy book in my life
I have read a few over the years
I thought that would be a straight buy for me but it looked very Avengers and Bond centric, no Jason King, Saint, Persuaders ? Bit of a shame, I probably will still pick it up
I would have hoped for a few of those also, the Saint surely ? Still, great to see.
The Milt Gross strip is "Count Screwloose"
thank you
Those comic covers are the highlight. I found a two volume set of famous comic covers at a local comic shop a few months ago, but it's been buried in the car since I bought them. Your video has reminded me about them so thank you !
that is good, glad the video was of use !
I watched the Matt Helm movies not because of Dean Martin but because of Elke Sommer. I adore her!
Yes, I always liked Elke Sommer as well, she was in some very enjoyable films.
Answering your question. I prefer slow zombie films :)
I do as well, I am watching one at the moment and they are slow ... weirdly it was not featured in the book (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, actually quite watchable but I love Jane Austen and Zombies). The fast zombies in Dawn Of the Dead remake, just way too fast. We would not have a chance and much the same in other films with fast ones (Train to Busan etc)
Am in u.s. waiting for uk .are the stori s the same as u.s. counterparts? Honestly the UK covers kook better then the u.s. ones🎉
There were a lot of great covers in the UK mags, I would love to see a proper book collection of all the best UK marvels, certainly the ones that never matched any S ones. I really like the UK mags, they are a bigger size than the US ones and also in B&W, the line work is often excellent
I have the comics
I have. few of them, that is why I went for the collection - love them
I am excited for a lot of these, mostly because DC has advertised that many of them feature stories that are being reprinted for the very first time. Stories I definitely missed out on originally and I've probably not heard of lol.
I have two of them so far, won't get them all as I have some in other formats but overall I have been impressed. Only one minor issue for me and that will be mentioned in the review is that the paper has a tendency to wave and the cover has a slight curl, never see this on the Marvel ones.
Lovely art ❤
certainly is
That's the one that got me started on Marvel Before that I was a Richie Rich kid.
I still love Harvey comics ... but I loved that Marvel Treasury, that was just amazing to a 12 year old kid and I re-read that mag to death
I'm sorry i thought this is about the other al parker 😳
possible ...
Thank you for the nice reviews, these books are out of print everwhere. COuld you kindly tell me which medium they use mainly? Is it Oil or Gouache or acrylics? Thank you so much
No idea, probably a mix, they are all different - you can find many examples of their work on google images. I agree, most of the books are out of print but that happens nearly as soon as they are released.
Thanks for the preview. My favorites are the same era of Spidey as yourself, and so far no books have shown issues #63 and 64, where the original Vulture returns!
I guess that material doesn't exist or is in private hands who have yet to share it. A pity but that is the way it is. I like the set of original pages in this book, I would love to see the Medusa one as well as, of course, any Ditko
Man I can barely see the book. Do you want to show it to us or not?
No, obviously not ... I think you can see I am not one for showing all of the book
@@AndrewBuckleBookReviews Understand. Maybe you can show just a little bit more? It would help me know if I want to get it or not.
Great review mate - i really like these magazines its nice to see clips from newspapers etc
I like those sort of clippings books / mags as well, haven't seen any new releases of late though - I hope they continue with the series at some point.
In the Batman Year One and Year Two and Killing Joke the named titles are just a small part. What many people will really be getting them for is all the other stories released around the same time rather than these well known stories that may attract new readers.
Yes, that is also a great benefit with collections like the omnis and epics, all the other material that is often forgotten about or rarely reprinted. I will be buying many of the DC finests, other than ones where I have the omnis and I suspect I will never see a plastic man omni any day soon. I have a number of them pre-ordered, will be adding to that as announcements are released
i think im getting this
It is an excellent book, better than the vol 1 marvel masterwork (but that is still an enjoyable book as well)
