How I see it, Sega wins but only because of it's console, snes was great for at home, but the Sega Nomad had the portable Genesis which to me makes all the difference. Much like the Nintendo switch is now. Sega dominated with that handheld A/V out controller port for second player, Nintendo wanted their gameboy to compete with the Game Gear which was at time's possible but the Sega Nomad had only the turbo express and that wasn't priced and available everywhere. Thank again VCDECIDE.

Genesis wins it seems oddly more colorful, daylight changes between matches, the globe at the vs screen looks way better, but most importantly, Mai’s breasts bounce after every victory. They don’t bounce on the Super Famicom version. And I can’t live with this kind of censorship.

The Japanese version of the game has Mai's "physics", the extra details seen on the Genesis, like the portraits mid fight, are available on Fatal Fury Special. Many of those are, like the combos etc and the Sega CD version looks and plays so... odd, in my opinion.

And yet for all it's improvements over the SNES version, Fatal Fury 2 Genesis was a super expensive game even for it's time. That game came out over 25 years ago but still carried a $75 price tag from what I can remember. Games like Fatal Fury 2, Beyond Oasis, Virtua Racing, and Phantasy Star 4 were all ridiculously priced ($75 - $100) and I will never understand why.

I dunno what's up but the Genesis game seems to be a different game of its own and it allows you to be very combo-crazy. Using Mai and Joe Higashi on opponents, this game is very combo friendly in the Genesis.
If you know what moves to land,it becomes very satisfying and you can breeze through guys (sans Raiden and Kim for me since they like to make things hard as nails especially Kim since he likes to destroy me every time he's on stage) pretty easily.

@@geovani60624 There is lag on the SNES version, and it's quite noticeable... The controls were very responsive, and all of the specials/supers would come out like 90% of the time (which is a GIGANTIC improvement over the original Fatal Fury), but the lag kinda affects your timing tho. Even your jumps take longer to land. At first, I thought it was due to a busted D-pad, but it was still the same result even on new/different controllers and arcade sticks that I've tried it on. On the Genesis version, the controls are just as good but it plays alot faster, and you also don't need to press 2 buttons at the same time in order to execute some super mioves; like Terry's Power Geyser or Kim's Phoenix Flattener.

Genesis EASILY wins this one. The number of pixels displayed on the screen is greater in the Genesis version. The characters are clearly a higher resolution in the Genesis version. As usual, the SNES version is "letterboxed." Some of the Genesis version is letterboxed, too, which is unusual because the Genesis versions of Street Fighter were not letterboxed while the SNES versions were very letterboxed. The one SNES stage has more parallax scrolling than the Genesis version, but other than that the stages are equal in parallax scrolling. The Genesis version also has voices that are not found in the SNES version.

One of the ocasa that I love about the MD version is that it is a version made entirely from scratch:
    1) .- They drew totally new Sprites for the characters both for combat and in the presentation scenes, also many stages; of note much more in Mai, Joe and terry with the naked eye; They are larger than those of the original Neo Geo. You can try to compare the poses and you will see that sometimes the pose is totally different, for example, the crouched defense pose of Mai.
    2) .- The gameplay is superior to that of Neogeo, combos can be made, the powers are faster and the shortening of the combat area in a big way the Sprites forces more intense combat and less to flee and that greatly improves the fighting in an SF2 style.
    3) .- It is not necessary to buy a special FF because it is already included, here you can play with all the bosses of the game, if I know that the two special extras were missing, but you already have the 4 bosses to play.
    4) .- You have unique tournament systems like winning up to 8 rounds to win the match and other extras that don't have any version.
I mean, from my point of view, it is not necessary any version that you want to issue to the original of Neo GEO since it is always the higher version; but the version of MD are unique that it is necessary to have it is already very different from the originals in a good way giving an almost totally different experience.

Thinking back on it now, that would've been a GREAT concept like way back in '93 when 2D fighters were HUGE in the home console market... But then again, Capcom and SNK were at each other's throats back then and prolly wouldn't agree to it tho!

Just like Samurai Shodown, the Genesis version does not play like the original game at all. It runs at the wrong speed, many moves have different properties allowing some combos not possible in the arcade version for example. The SNES version is far more faithful in terms of gameplay.
Also, the size of the sprites is not the reason for the different cart sizes because the lower color palette of the Genesis sprites allows for lower data sizes. Besides that the Genesis version is missing a lot of parallax scrolling layers and details in many backgrounds. As an example, remember how Earthworm Jim on the Genesis has an extra level and runs at a higher resolution than the SNES version while still taking the same amount of cartridge space.

    • @RetrOrigin
      @RetrOrigin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@DejaVoodooDoll Yeah, to be fair is more of a case by case thing, since many games do have mostly the same amount of content under the same amount of memory.
More likely, the way each console handles sprite limits and tile sizes has more to do with final size, since the same graphic may end up utilizing a different amount of sprites on each console.
The image wasn't really stretched on SNES games, that's more the result of how CRTs display video.
For the most part sprites were the same pixel count/size in multi-platform games, but the screen looked cropped on SNES due to the lower res (and then stretched by CRT TVs)
Only a few games like Street Fighter II were made using the exact same resolution (256x224) on both consoles, in this case because Capcom wanted to re-use the sprites they already made for the SNES.

Basically every fighting game comparison shows the same thing: the Genesis, despite being 2 years older, was a better sprite-pusher. The SNES had all sorts of lighting effects or BG transformation, more available color for backgrounds (but not for sprites: both the SNES and the Genesis were limited to 16 colors per sprite, and the 256 color max for all sprites vs. 64 for the Genesis was theoretical). The "SNES can do 128 sprites vs. the Genesis 64" was technically true but practically a myth since the SNES CPU couldn't drive those sprites.
The SNES Tile engine could do a lot more, as seen later with the super FX chips, but strangely enough the SNES was bottlenecked by the CPU. Really weird, especially given how ubiquitous 68ks were.
The genesis came out in 88, the SNES in 1990. The Genesis CPU was running at, roughly, 2.1 MIPS vs. the SNES at 1.4 MIPS. Of course the Genesis CPU had a more than double clock speed, so this gap could be made bigger through developer blood sweat and tears on the Genesis, while the SNES CPU had less upside.
If Nintendo just went with a 68K, they would probably find a price-practical 68K variant that would beat the Genesis in 1990 and remove that bottleneck. But I don't know how expensive the SNES' ASIC was, maybe they would have had to sacrifice color or the vector math abilites that allowed for BG transformation (F-Zero) or all the fancy lighting and shading effects if they went with a 68K. If that was the case, I think they ultimately made the right choice. Because that color and 3D effects were huge for platformers and RPGs, games which don't need as many sprites on screen at once. But for fighting games and shooters, that underpowered CPU had an effect. But I think Nintendo decided they could muddle along in the fighting, sports and shmup categories and win on platformers and RPGs, ultimately the right choice.

When the SNES was still in development, they actually had an option for a 10MHz chipset but they just CHEAPED OUT (thinking that it won't ever be needed) and so that's why we are forever left stuck with this bottlenecked slow speed... Why put a 4-banger into your sports car when you could've put in a strong and healthy V-12? 😞

Look at the backgrounds in Cheng stage, why do the the roof tops and signs have a green tint and outline to them? It's because the Mega Drive can't put enough colours on screen, even with hacks there is only so far you can go with that 64 colour on screen limitation. Other stages suffer from this as well. Terry Bogards stage looks so much better on the Snes and it scrolls quicker and smoother too. It all doesn't matter anyway because the Snes port of Fatal Fury Special is better than both of these ports.

SNES owns this one. Is closer to the Arcade, it has the bonus stages, the pole dance in Mai stage, the score system, etc. Genesis has larger sprites, but nothing more. Anyway both are good versions of the game.

You can easily see that the Snes has more background layers, superior colour and looks like the snes is running at a higher resolution. Also noticed the superior sound and no bonus screen on genesis

    • @juststatedtheobvious9633
      @juststatedtheobvious9633 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The SNES can't run in a higher resolution than the Megadrive, unless you're using the 16 color mode.
Did you mean, perhaps, that the pixels are bigger? Or that it has more colors?

@@juststatedtheobvious9633 I meant that more pixels in the screen. There are a handful of games that can run in high res, but not many. The snes can support 512x448 just not many games used it.

Both games are running in the exact same resolution. You can tell when the SNES is using high resolution mode, because it looks like RPM Racing.
You have less colors than a Genesis, and the sprites aren't running in the same resolution as the background.
