Smallville was such a great show. The casting was amazing, especially the Luthors. They had the best scripts out of everyone. John Glover take a bow. You're an amazing actor. Lionel Luthor was one of the best performances on TV, but was so underrated to the world of TV. This was so amazing this scene, so emotional and brilliant acted by John and Michael. John Glover should've won an Golden Globe or an Emmy for Smallville.
Lex was smart in taking the blame of his mother murder of Julian because Lex knows one day he can take down Lionel tyrannical control off him in swift blow
@@erikphelan7508Yeah, and in the end he became exactly what Lionel wanted anyway. The one who ultimately won in the end was Lionel. You can even see the smugness in his expression after Lex pushes him out the window
I've seen every episode like a million times. And this is one of the most powerful scenes in the show's great history. Lex brought the powerful Lionel to tears. And it also made you think what could have been with there relationship.
Just started watching smallville about 2 months ago and im kicking my self in the ass for not watching while it aired. Im freakin' HOOKED. About to finish season 3 tonight and saw this episode memoria the other night and my god the performances by each actor especially glover and rossenbaum were beyond amazing. I began to tear up during this scene and the scene with clark and ma kent. Great show.
The show went on 2 seasons too long but Lex and Lionel remained the best thing about the show. Their scenes are delightfully fucked up lol, you're in for a treat. I'm surprised people are still getting into Smallville at this point in time, did you really run out of TV series to watch? How did you land on this one?
Edriss Scofield well I started to watch smallville mostly because superman is alot cooler to me now than back when I was younger lol. Im a huge DC fan. Love the movies man of steel and batman v superman. Shortly after watching bvs and buying some superman comics, the show was my next option and I love it.
Just imagine being a child and seeing your mother kill your baby brother to save him from your father, then realizing what would happen to your mom if your dad found out, so you take the blame, repress the memory and after years and years of abuse, wanting nothing more than your father's affection, you suddenly remember all this and as your father tries to give you the thing that you thought you wanted all along, all you can think of is how you had to protect your own mother from your father. How your father drove her to madness and how he took it all out on you. It's just such a diffucult situation because you can't even blame Lionel entirely. Of course you're gonna resent the person you think murdered your baby boy. Man, John Glover and Michael Rosenbaum were just on a whole other level. Their acting skills was lightyears beyond the rest of the cast and the way their characters were written was absolutely fantastic. It's scenes like this that actually made you understand why Lex turned out the way he did. The Luthors were just nothing but pain and tragedy
The best part, Yes THE BEST PART about Smallville was the Lionel/Lex Lex/Clark dynamic. Such good acting, dialog and general atmosphere these actors helped create on screen. Michael Rosenbaum is the definitive Lex Luthor
Wow.... incredible scene. This was not only one of the best scenes, but one of the best episodes, in Smallville history. Tremendous acting. Truly amazing.
I love how Lionel's expression reveals that even he knows that he would have put Lillian in a mental institution if he had ever found out. It was like piecing together the last piece of the puzzle. Just in a few seconds of pure acting, John Glover delivers an amazing performance as Lionel.
This is a very deeply emotional scene. Every time I watch it it brings tears to my eyes. His father may have changed if he knew, but it was too late. Lex's childhood was forever scarred.
The interactions between Lex and Lionel were always great. The issue is that you always assumed Lionel was lying or holding something back. Not with this scene. This was pure honesty and emotion. This is probably one of the few scenes of the show where I know Lionel is not trying to manipulate Lex or the situation. This is just raw shock and despair.
To be fair to Lionel, the episode showed he tried to be a good father before Julian's death. So really, Lex is partially to blame because Lionel truly believed he murdered his brother.
Lionel's realization that Lex was innocent all along and that he has killed any chance he had at being a true father to Lex, that their relationship is too damaged at this point
It's unusual to see a genre show like this take such a pivotal moment and explore it so thoroughly in such a short timespan - so much happens in these 3 minutes or so - the writing gives a strong framework, but it's amazing to see how much these actors draw out of it
But to be fair he still tried, despite believing he killed his brother he still raised him. I broke my brothers fingers & my dad put me through a damned window lol
I remember the first time I saw this scene. The show for the most part was just simple fun, but THIS scene had me crying with my hands covering my mouth. Thank you for uploading this.
I love the face Lionel makes when Lex tells him why he covered up for Lillian. As if he's horrified the boy who knows him best could think he'd have his own wife killed, but then even more horrified at him realizing he was right.
Absolute favorite (and episode) from all of Smallville. This is the only episode that makes me feel like crying every time I watch it. John Glover and Michael Rosenbaum were amazing in this scene. Especially when Lionel tries to muster up the words "I love you", and Lex tells him "No . . no . . " because it's already too late for them to ever fix what happened.
John and Michael are excellent performers. Combined with great writing for scenes like this, "Smallville" was truly one of a kind. In 217 episodes across 10 years, there's bound to be a few which weren't so great...but almost any scene with Lionel and Lex was dramatic perfection.
Yeah! Exactly! That's the point! The change of this scenes, the drama in the Lex's life and the love on Clark's life with his parents is so intense to ser and watching. I feel sorry for Lex in this time because actually he doesnt deserve this.
Lex took on the role of the villain to protect his mother. Towards the end of the series, Lex says that he's going to become Clark's nemesis because that's what Clark needs to become the hero he's destined to be: without Lex challenging him, he'll never be as great as could be. This scene makes me think Lex really meant that when he said it. That he's willing to take on that role for someone he loves, because the sacrifice is worth it.
Agree, this scene is amazing! the emotion through these characters so powerful and so realistic it almost scary. These two were perfect together and again like tbagn said at that moment when he realized he screwed up his relationship with his son and will NEVER get it back is just...woah...it's heartbreaking
Haha the feels in this episode, lol yes even still in 2016 after watching smallville episode 1 to the last episode ever a hundred times over and over, this episode has the most emotion, has such power, touches me the most, everyone has something in there past or will do something and time will pass and they look back at it and think "This go could be different.." if I chose to do this, everyone has that moment and they really showed that in this episode of smallville, God it was so real it almost brought me to cry, this will always be the most powerful scene and episode of smallville for me.
2:36 that moment when Lionel realised how right his son was. He was a ruthless man who did anything to get what he wanted. At that point in his life he wanted a real family. To have that taken away from him by his wife he would have burnt the earth to make her pay for murdering his son. To realise his son lex realised this also at such a young age was shattering. I feel his pain and regress on his response
That scene is all too real. Come from a family with similar economic dynamics (yet with much more Old World influences), it's always brutal to rematch these kinds of clips. Thanks for posting!
I got to say, this was one of my favorite episodes of the series for Luthor family arc. There's so much going on for both of them, and the actors really kill it here in this scene.
One thing I can say, Smallville had some damn good actors, it's like all of them together made the best cup of tea...lex and Lionel, outstanding performance, Clark, cloe', Jonathan, Martha etc. Oliver, Louise. Brilliant. Beautiful series, joy, hatred, anger, love, jealousy, you name it , it was there. One good series ..
Oh my goodness! This scene was absolutely powerful! A master class in the art of acting! All of subtle nuances. The range of emotions to anger, to disbelief, to shock, to acceptance of a new reality and finally, to a father yearning to finally embrace a son that he loved, but couldn’t embrace, because he thought that he had killed his own brother and Lex, seeing all of that being fully displayed and rejecting him! Ultimately telling him that it’s too late! Does it get any better than this! I know that Tom Welling was the focal point of the show. His journey from a small town boy who’s trying to figure out what makes him so different from his peers, to his parents showing him the spaceship that brought him to Earth. To ultimately becoming THAT GUY ( They could never actually say or even use the term Superman) Was a great story! However, what always stole the show for me was the relationship between Lex and Lionel, powerfully done by these two men right here! Well done gentleman!
This episode was incredible, one of the best of all ten seasons. This, along with the following scene with Martha and Clark, puts Lex and Clark in perspective.
Lionel definitely deserves a lot of blame, but some of it is on Lex too. We make our own choices and Lex chose to protect his mother. A well meaning move, but not necessarily right.
I love this scene. For all the evil Lionel has done up to this point, not just to Lex but to everyone, and Lex allowing his father to realize what his personality, his lack of conscious, his cutthroat methods had ultimately cost him. It was at this scene where Lionel had discovered how much he was wrong. How evil he truly had been. And all the years of this behaviour were transformed into a tsunami of guilt. It is a good thing Lionel taught himself to be so strong. Because otherwise this would have killed him right then.
It's kinda horrifying to think that even at the age of 12, Lex knew that Lionel would have his mother murdered if he knew the truth. Even then he knew his father was capable of anything.
This is one of the many well written well acted scenes in smallville history. You could take this whole scene and use it to teach a masterclass in acting. When a scene like this is so intensely personal that when you watch it as a third party you feel like your eavesdropping on something you have no business knowing, yeah its that good.
My older brother has no care for science fiction shows, books, or videogames, but when I told him about this episode (since I was so astounded myself after seeing it), he was immediately intrigued enough to watch. Sadly he was just about off to college so he never got the chance
Its been probably 9 years since I watched smallville but I recently thought of this scene...I watched it over and over again back in the day...so I searched lex and lionel and this was first video that popped up....so powerful

scenes like this shows, not everyone is all good or evil. despite lionels evil, there is some love in his heart. That what i love about him. I feel sorry for him in ths scene. He realises things between him and lex could have been better. He could have been a better father. We all have our tragedies , we have to learn to live them, no matter how much they affect us. This whole scene man, acting at its finest. Even to this day having rewatched this show countless times it still gets me. Edit: and for those looking for the piano cover plays at 2:43 it’s called lex’s memories, extremely hard to find since there’s no official release
I love this scene for. Simple reason: This is the only time Lex got justice, not when he killed his father o put him in prison. This, where Lionel admitted unequivocally that he failed to be a father for Lex, out of nothing. No gaslighting, no turning tables, admitting he could’ve been the father Lex always craved for if only he had known, and has nobody to blame but himself. So cathartic and well made
John Glover is truly an underrated actor of our time and I'm glad the people who know him from smallville and robocop got to experience his magnificent acting chops
Now I know why I've always loved smallville and especially lex Luther. It's because I can relate to him. He is genuine but people think he is up to something. He is misinterpreted. I feel extremely sorry for him.
It’s funny how Lionel‘s expressions come in because Lionel tries so hard to hide his emotions and not show weakness so that is what makes the scene so powerful is the fact that Lionel tried so hard to hide his emotions and it finally came out.
I'm almost thirty and I'm watching this show for the FIRST time. I just watched this scene, and wow. These two are incredible. (And both handsome as hell, let's be honest. )
Even though season 2 is my favorite by a hair, season 3 had by far the best writing and scenes of the series. The war between Lex & Lionel that was boiling hot at that time produced some of the best & most brilliant moments of the series like moments in Exile, Phoenix (when Lex returned), Shattered (the whole episode was insanely good--no pun intended haha), Asylum (another great episode), Memoria, and the ending montage in Covenant just blew me the hell away (hands down the masterpiece moment of the series). Then there were other characters who had great scenes like Clark with Morgan Edge in Exile & Phoenix, Jonathan vs. Clark in those same 2 episodes, Jonathan vs. Lionel & everything else that happened in Legacy, the Naman-Sageeth prophecy coming true in Talisman, Pete's farewell to Clark in Forsaken, and many more. I really hated it when the show lost its seriousness starting in Crusade. I like Lois, but I think they should've waited to bring her in as a regular character starting in season 5 as a college classmate of Clark's. And I really wish they could have made her be more serious and put her into serious plots. Season 4 had some gems like Transference, Onyx, and Commencement but the rest of the season was just dull and full of fillers.
Lex sacrificed any hope he could ever had to having a loving relationship with his father to save his mother. That is tragically beautiful!

And of course Seasons 1-6 had flaws and crap in them Seasons 4 and 6 especially and saying otherwise because you like them makes you a fanboy. The only good things Season 4 did were introducing Lois and redeeming Lionel.

Lionel realizes he ruined any good relationship he could’ve had with lex
Lex was smart in taking the blame of his mother murder of Julian because Lex knows one day he can take down Lionel tyrannical control off him in swift blow
@@CaptainViral84 yeah but I don’t think that was his intention.
@@erikphelan7508It wasn't. Not to mention, it may not have been the right call. His mom still killed his brother.
And it also made you think what could have been with there relationship.
same here, this episode has the most feels to me as well, just how everything went down almost made me cry haha
Great show.
same i never realize the actors and characters were great.. i love lionel
Keep watching till the end you're going to love it
The show went on 2 seasons too long but Lex and Lionel remained the best thing about the show.
I'm just now getting into Smallville too and just finished this episode. I'm in tears!
Such a great scene. This episode was one of the best of the entire show.
Up there with clarke and Lana's last kiss. For sure
@@renlentlesstourist7574 Jesus whaaaat? What do you even compare?
What series
The acting was way ahead of its time.
The Luthors were just nothing but pain and tragedy
the face of both of them, the music....all the scene was strong and amazing
The best part, Yes THE BEST PART about Smallville was the Lionel/Lex Lex/Clark dynamic. Such good acting, dialog and general atmosphere these actors helped create on screen. Michael Rosenbaum is the definitive Lex Luthor
Yes hes the best Lex!!
Also Clark and his parents
Wow.... incredible scene. This was not only one of the best scenes, but one of the best episodes, in Smallville history. Tremendous acting. Truly amazing.
These actors will forever be underrated stars. This scene is brilliant
Lex's childhood was forever scarred.
all these years later n this scene still can bring me to tears.
This is my favourite episode of Smallville, hands down. And when My Immortal starts it's even better!
I'm in tears
It is tragic that so many scenes of this show are not given enough credit for how well written and acted they are.
It was such a powerful scene! You realize that all of Lex's failures was really a result of Lionel's failure to be a good father to Lex!
Ikr
I think if lex had a good father he wouldn't of been how he is he would of be a man good man
To be fair to Lionel, the episode showed he tried to be a good father before Julian's death. So really, Lex is partially to blame because Lionel truly believed he murdered his brother.
Lionel's realization that Lex was innocent all along and that he has killed any chance he had at being a true father to Lex, that their relationship is too damaged at this point
It's unusual to see a genre show like this take such a pivotal moment and explore it so thoroughly in such a short timespan - so much happens in these 3 minutes or so - the writing gives a strong framework, but it's amazing to see how much these actors draw out of it
This was such a sad scene. The acting was incredible and Lex's character was done so well. A tear actually came down after watching this scene.
2:50 that crushing impact of the realization setting in.
Just astounding acting I love this show and the performance these two actors display is excellent. This is a truly emotionally charged scene.
Two AMAZING actor's, one of the most powerful emotional scenes I've EVER seen on ANY tv drama movie or series 😇
It is still the benchmark for superhero tv drama...simply amazing, even after all these years..
Absolute favorite (and episode) from all of Smallville. This is the only episode that makes me feel like crying every time I watch it. John Glover and Michael Rosenbaum were amazing in this scene. Especially when Lionel tries to muster up the words "I love you", and Lex tells him "No . . no . . " because it's already too late for them to ever fix what happened.
one of the, if not the most powerful scenes in all of Smallville's run
A few episodes later, lionel died pretty much where he stood right there
THe way they talk is just purely amazing.
John and Michael are excellent performers. Combined with great writing for scenes like this, "Smallville" was truly one of a kind. In 217 episodes across 10 years, there's bound to be a few which weren't so great...but almost any scene with Lionel and Lex was dramatic perfection.
one of the most epic most powerful scenes in the whole series!!!!! Thanks for uploading it!
people talk about how great this scene is, but I think its especially great, because of the scene between Clark and his mum that follows
Yeah! Exactly! That's the point! The change of this scenes, the drama in the Lex's life and the love on Clark's life with his parents is so intense to ser and watching. I feel sorry for Lex in this time because actually he doesnt deserve this.
Yeah its a perfect 1-2 punch
I am 3 years late but you are absolutely correct
Lex took on the role of the villain to protect his mother. Towards the end of the series, Lex says that he's going to become Clark's nemesis because that's what Clark needs to become the hero he's destined to be: without Lex challenging him, he'll never be as great as could be. This scene makes me think Lex really meant that when he said it. That he's willing to take on that role for someone he loves, because the sacrifice is worth it.
This is one of my all time favorite scenes. Definitely my favorite Smallville scene. So emotional. So real.
Argh, that moment at 2:45 when Lionel realises that every horrible thing he put Lex through and what he believed he did was a lie.
All dem feels!
Very powerful indeed. The actors did full justice to the portray the this kind of emotion. Very intense.
These two always delivered Oscar worthy performances in an otherwise teen drama
2:36 that moment when Lionel realised how right his son was. He was a ruthless man who did anything to get what he wanted. At that point in his life he wanted a real family.
To have that taken away from him by his wife he would have burnt the earth to make her pay for murdering his son. To realise his son lex realised this also at such a young age was shattering.
I feel his pain and regress on his response
That scene is all too real. Come from a family with similar economic dynamics (yet with much more Old World influences), it's always brutal to rematch these kinds of clips. Thanks for posting!
this scene was so undervalued.
The range of emotions to anger, to disbelief, to shock, to acceptance of a new reality and finally, to a father yearning to finally embrace a son that he loved, but couldn’t
embrace, because he thought that he had killed his own brother and Lex, seeing
all of that being fully displayed and rejecting him! Ultimately telling him that it’s too late!
Does it get any better than this! I know that Tom Welling was the focal point of the show.
His journey from a small town boy who’s trying to figure out what makes him so different
from his peers, to his parents showing him the spaceship that brought him to Earth.
To ultimately becoming THAT GUY ( They could never actually say or even use the term Superman)
Was a great story! However, what always stole the show for me was the relationship
between Lex and Lionel, powerfully done by these two men right here! Well done gentleman!
This episode was incredible, one of the best of all ten seasons. This, along with the following scene with Martha and Clark, puts Lex and Clark in perspective.
The end of S7 when Clark finds Lex in the fortress is pretty powerful too!!
Imagine going almost 20 years being hated every day by your own father for something you didn't do.
Clarke didn't make lex, Lionel did.
Lionel definitely deserves a lot of blame, but some of it is on Lex too. We make our own choices and Lex chose to protect his mother. A well meaning move, but not necessarily right.
More like a decade. Lex is like 23 here
I love this scene.
Didn’t Lionel try to kill himself prior to this? I can’t remember the reason.
So all these years he was punishing Lex for it.
Lex and Lionel were the greatest characters on the show
With Lois , Jonathan Kent and Oliver Queen also Tess was badass
Been watching smallville since I was 11/12 yes old.
Micheal Taylor omg i remember the tv spots for it, the magazine ads, nostalgia as fuck! WB before CW.
judging from your grammar, that was probably a few months ago
My heart breaks everytime, such a powerful moment between two deeply complex characters.
Still deserves an Oscar... beautiful adaption of the comics!
Amazing scene, brilliant acting! You gotta love Smallville!
Gets me everytime.
It's kinda horrifying to think that even at the age of 12, Lex knew that Lionel would have his mother murdered if he knew the truth. Even then he knew his father was capable of anything.
The chemistry between these two kept the show interesting af. Smallville was about Lex’s story arc. Only reason I watched.
Smallville is the greatest show of all time
The acting here is SO GOOD 😮
This is one of the many well written well acted scenes in smallville history. You could take this whole scene and use it to teach a masterclass in acting. When a scene like this is so intensely personal that when you watch it as a third party you feel like your eavesdropping on something you have no business knowing, yeah its that good.
To me, One the most powerful and Iconic moments Smallville ever delivered 💔💞
My older brother has no care for science fiction shows, books, or videogames, but when I told him about this episode (since I was so astounded myself after seeing it), he was immediately intrigued enough to watch. Sadly he was just about off to college so he never got the chance
Anyone knows what the music is, I've been looking for it but haven't found anything
This scene was amazing!
Its been probably 9 years since I watched smallville but I recently thought of this scene...I watched it over and over again back in the day...so I searched lex and lionel and this was first video that popped up....so powerful
Amazing...the chemistry between these two...it's almost like they were really related! Fantastic Acting!!! I Fucking Love Smallville!!!
This was a powerful emotional moment between lex and lionel
Just proves Lex does have good in him, he protected his mother
Ikr!! I dont care what the comics say. Ppl can interpret this show in different ways. I dont think Lex started out evil and if he was saved in TIME. it would've been before he became irredeemable
@@lessismore8533 You sound like ME jolly old chap, intellect don't work here, its neither appreciated nore understood by the majority of ppl here...I KNOW, they usually tell you you spelt a word wrong you get MOBBED by the gramma police to STUPID to understand words DON'T have to be spelt correctly hahah, TH-cam is mostly below middle class and extremely UNEDUCATED bt I'm sure you already have experienced this 😆 We esoterically dignified must maintain respect for the lower class as they ARE still human, run around TH-cam desperately trying to impress their idiotic peers or seek approval due to a lack of emotional connection with mummy and daddy 😆 I'm NO genius yet even I noticed how in this series, Lex is a contrast to the usual beginning. In retrospect a refreshing change I thought
She killed his brother and let him take the blame. It may have been well intentioned, but it was wrong.
scenes like this shows,
not everyone is all good or evil.
despite lionels evil, there is some love in his heart. That what i love about him. I feel sorry for him in ths scene. He realises things between him and lex could have been better. He could have been a better father.
We all have our tragedies , we have to learn to live them, no matter how much they affect us.
The Mighty powerful Manipulative Lionel Luthor at his most vulnérable..
Never look at things in black and white.
Great scene and acting
i LIKE this moment who is one of my favoris of all time!
The drama in Smallville was written to nearly perfection!
this is hands down one of the best scenes i have ever seen movie or tv
Excellent scene. miss this show. This episode in general quite emotional
I am still so sorry for Lex. He doesn't deserve this.
Up to this point, I thought John Glover was a good actor.
This scene made me realize he's an EXCELLENT actor.
John Glover and Michael Rosenbaum were so incredible in this scene, as father and son. The anguish on Lionel's face and Lex's coldness.
dammit! find the man chopping all those damn onions! 😭😭😭😭😭
These 2 make the show
Omg I forgot how amazing these two were
These two were the best actors on the show. Unreal.
(And both handsome as hell, let's be honest. )
Was Evanescence about to start playing?
Exactly! My Immortal
Only 2 scenes in Smallville make me sad for lex. This scene and his birthday party
