I'd like to thank both these guys for providing the super awesome acting that made one of my all time favorite shows so good. You both ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I want to know more about that dinner with the executive and who fumbled that offer! They had to know that wouldn't have worked, lol. On the length of Smallville as a series, I still say that the ending of Season 4 would've been the perfect finale. After wrap, take 6 months off. Then you start a new series called "Metropolis" that would've been another 4 Seasons or beyond if the interest was still there. That being said, I'm happy we got as much quality television as we did.
I think the material was there to make 5 extraordinary season that laid the foundation for a DC movie franchise years before Marvel could get there. The WB execs and purse holders have always been too shortsighted and greedy.
Honestly, I have never heard that take before. That said, this was when executives thought fans were so stupid that we could not handle two Batmen at the same time even though one could be animated so I think they would turned it down as well.
I mean 8,9 and 10 were really good too. I know Michael said he wanted to do other projects because his grandmother encouraged him and also he didn't want to shave his head anymore. He only came back for the finale. And John played a villianous role since the beginning with the backstabbing and secret projects and played good at some points as well. So the alternate reality was just like his character for most of the series.
I mean it had its highlights but there is no denying the show really took a nose dive in later seasons. Its astounding how much the quality dropped when Michael Rosenbaum left and they were just basically doing villian of the season storylines. Its clear they had no plan from that point onwards.
Opinions and assholes, but I think it was about mid-Season Five that the show dropped in quality, because the powers that be wanted to keep "Young Clark Kent" without getting to "Superman", so they started to drag their heels; it became the Green Arrow Show for a while, then it meandered Clark and Lana into a will they/won't they, then they started introducing things from later in the lore but "Smallville-ized". Of course, I kept watching, so what does that say about me?! I do think it went out in a relatively high note on the last two seasons, letting Clark (still very slowly) move forward. It's just too bad Tom Welling couldn't be available for the Crisis crossover (PLEASE, I need to believe this!)
@@KonElKent I overall like season 5 the best but yes cracks were forming as it was clear by that point we weren't heading towards anything significant. Like by season 8 I was wondering why are we even still calling this show smallville? We are in Metropolis more than anything.
Whole seasons weren’t terrible, but yea, they had to stretch it out and it became a problem. I do find it interesting how fans have such differing opinions of specific stories and and characters… it’s really interesting.
Just rewatched the series and you guys were my favorite characters. Such top-tier acting--so consistently good. Also, might be weird but I def had a crush on Lionel XD
Yeah, I'm watching season 10 now, and alt-universe Lionel just wasn't given any nuance or layers, but John still did a compelling job with the role. I'm also sorry that Brimstone got shuttered so fast. I'm SUCH a fan of that show and what John did with Peter Horton. Believe me, the show still has fans out there, despite it never getting any commercial release and not being on-air in reruns for years now. I did a whole video covering the show, and it's still getting views and comments so many years later! Also, every scene between Michael & John on Smallville is ELECTRIC! So much complex sparking off each other all the time! Fabulous! Love you both in those roles!
I know he didn't like it but if that didn't happen we wouldn't of gotten Clark luthor/ Ultraman. Especially the scene when he crashes down through the ceiling window. That was EPIC.
They definitely could have included Ultraman without Lionel, especially if they followed the comic book storyline (but they probably didn’t want to portray the Kents as evil versions who raised Clark until he murdered them).
I get what he's saying, but I loved Earth-2 Lionel. He'd had none of the character development of our Lionel and I think he worked as a good villain for that season. I'll never forget the chills I got of him monologuing in the rain and then turning to the camera about what was in store for all of us.
Same. Though I did watch the season 8 premiere. I did give in later and watch seasons 8-10 (but only because I got a friend of mine into Smallville and he wanted to see how it ended)
Season 9 was a really good season. The clone of Zod and his followers was a great storyline. I would of preferred the one episode if Lionel with him grinning at the camera and walking away. Leaving us to guess what mischief he would get into years later rebuilding his empire.
Smallville should have ended at 6 or 7. And 10 was just a pile of wasted opportunities. I was excited at the time to see John Glover returning because they were introducing the multiverse concept in the show, but they barely done anything with it. I think it would be interesting if the main conflict was with Earth 2 rather than Darkseid because not only was too soon to Clark face Darkseid and he still hadn't become Superman, but because making Darkseid just dark cloud was stupid. More stupid was making Lionel a vessel for Darkseid. I don't know if Michael remaining in the show would've helped making things better, because when he left something was missing.
I completely get why he found it boring - but it was such a treat seeing a full stop pure evil Lionel, in a way that preserved his arc in the original part.
And then the Lex in the series finale is a clone with copied memories(???) which get immediately erased by magic memory-wiping gel. Is he even the same guy? It sure doesn't feel like it. It feels like he has Lex's memories for the sake of a single conversation... because that is indeed why he has them. They could've just told us that the Lex that was blown up inside of the trailer in season 8 was just a decoy to throw everybody off the scent and allow the _real_ Lex to spend a couple of years healing in a hyperbaric chamber somewhere. I mean, it's a shlocky bullshit excuse, but it's ironically less shlocky than the clone with memories thing.
He did such a good job, ya really didn't like his character for the most part, but his redemption arc and stuff was interesting, it made him not so binary of a character. The best characters are the multifaceted ones
I honestly can’t blame Michael for not renewing his contract. Those last few episodes of season 7 were not great. As for John, the first two episodes he was in for Season 10 were ok, but what they did with his character in the finale was terrible.
I can understand how John feels about his character in 9 & 10 but those seasons and what they contributed to the show were still good overall. Season 7 is arguably the worst because it's repeat of S1 with freak of the week types.
Nothing against the guy running the podcast but I preferred John Glover. 9 and 10? Oof. I actually had bought the season for doomsday but only watched those episodes and felt too bored with the rest.
BEST IOY clip so far!!! This lack of self-awareness is why watching actors is so entertaining.... Rosenbaum trying to act as if he knows something about the filmography of his colleague for 7 YEARS, in the peak acting highlight in both their careers... Then started to talking about himself and how he met with a slimy exec that was asking him to keep his job.... and warned him this could be the highlight of his career and he should make the most of it. but smart rosenbaum wouldn't say what he wanted to stay and when offered to stay on and keep making millions each year, he chose to be insulted... ever since, what acting peaks did he conquer? Mr clamp was very human and kind, in opposite. you see?! both funny and moving. actors!
Lionel Luthor was IMO the best character in that whole show.
It's so exciting to see these 2 again together. I miss seeing them. Both of these are still in my heart and memory because of the caracters.
The Luthors together again 😊
I honestly thought he passed last year. What a pleasant surprise to see John on here!
To see both of you together again is magic! You two made Smallville so great!

I laughed when you said he offered you the same money.
Michael is smart. John Glover is smart.
It would've been interesting to hear their... Creative output, or what should have been put into the show.
It's weird for Michael to say he had no antagonist left on the show given how Clark and Lex became bitter enemies from roughly season 6 on
I was glad you came back for the series finale though.
I mean 8,9 and 10 were really good too. I know Michael said he wanted to do other projects because his grandmother encouraged him and also he didn't want to shave his head anymore. Gonna disagree, while I don’t think they hit the peaks of the early years seasons 8-10 are way better than seasons 6-7

I think the best part of the series was the sweet spot where Lionel was actively helping Clark
Just rewatched the series and you guys were my favorite characters. Such top-tier acting--so consistently good. Also, might be weird but I def had a crush on Lionel XD
Can't wait to see you guys at Comic Con in Albuquerque!
The alternate universe storyline in smallville never worked cause they didn't show any new side to clark that we haven't seen.
It didn't help the Welling acted as Ultraman the same way he acted as Red K Clark, Bizarro and Lionel in Clark's body.

the show sucked by then so that you think it was positive says more of your taste than anything lol
@@DomClancySure! I'll take that. I love all ten seasons of the show!
I'd buy a car alarm from this man any day.
Brimstone was such a cool series to be cancelled so quickly
Yes.
Glover is one of a handful of men who could play god and satan simultaneously!
What the hell he still looks amazing!
Honestly 8 is where I stopped.. I’ve watched the first 3 seasons probably 10 times though.. it gives me such a nostalgic feeling I just love it.
8 and 9 are week. 10 is dope

I think after Rosenbaum left I had little reason to keep going. I really tried. It wasn’t enough.

Can't pin this on al and miles , that was on Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson who took over

It’s a good analogy
Lex and Lionel the best characters in small ville for sure.
Hey Michael have you ever said why you didn’t shave your head for the final episode?

Father & son
So Lex no longer had an antagonist after season 7? Does mIchael not realize that Lex Luthor’s main nemesis is Superman?
well to be fair, Smallville is about clark kent, not superman. Clark never becomes superman on screen, we only got glimpses from the future.
Man. I guess I’ll watch seasons 9 and 10. Probably? Idk. The show didn’t live up to my expectations. I was out at some point.
