If you four sang a rock/metal version of The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything I think that would be pretty much the greatest thing ever.

This has been done by a christian metal band a few decads back. The album was a collab called veggie rock. but id love to hear them do it
Wow! That's an excellent idea! Please do!
i have been saying this on his posts for over a year!!!

Original song: slightly slow dirge about a crew going through some of the most dangerous waters in the world
This cover: WE'RE SLAPPING ROCKET BOOSTERS ON THIS SHIT AND F I G H T I N G THAT PASSAGE.
Unleash the Archers has a great cover of it too(and how I first heard the song). [Also, it's about driving, not sailing]
" crew going through some of the most dangerous waters in the world"
It's about driving (specifically, west across Canada) and regretting you weren't able to be an explorer, getting to the end of the trip, and finding there's nothing further to do except drive home the way you came.
Fam there's multiple references to driving a car, its not even from the POV of sailors
@@RyuFelinshire Unleash the Archers is an absolute top tier banger
@@evilspoons I mean. It IS about driving west across Canada. And yes, there are other explorers name dropped. But the Franklin expedition is very much the main metaphor. Like. that's a pretty significant thing that happens in the song.
Four years in a row, this man has been my most listened to artist on Spotify 😅
He's consitently in my top 5
lol me too. He was #1 on my spotify wrapped this year...and Galactikraken was #5 😅
Same
There’s more people like me out there 🥲
3 years for me! i was in the top 0.02% this year XD
Bro Colm hitting those high notes like a champion in his verse. JESUS CHRIST THAT IS TALENT!
This isn’t just an amazing rock cover of a shanty. This is the anthem of explorers born in an era where every corner of the map has already been filled in.
Born too late to explore the planet. Born too soon to explore the cosmos.
@@TheMdnghtShadowThere's always the ocean floor.

I was yesterday years old when I discovered that this song existed (8/14/24). I’m not Canadian, but I am familiar with the history behind the lyrics.
Oddly enough, the first thing that the song reminded me of was road trips with my father when I was young. He’s since passed, but I’m beginning to think that a road trip to his hometown on Lake Michigan might be in order.
Ironically, I’ll have to drive Northwest to get there…
i lost my fucking SHIT when my buddy shared this in our discord music channel. unleash the archers is in my top 3 metal bands and this song is etched into my god damned soul
but you guys
SLAYED
EVERY PART GAVE MY GOOSEBUMPS
IT'S 9AM AND MY NECK/CHEEKS ALREADY HURT
ALSO JONATHAN YOUR VOCALS PEAK SO FUCKING HARD RIGHT AFTER 3 MINUTES
CHRIS ON A STICK THIS IS A GREAT WAY TO START MY DAY
THANK YOU, NEVER CHANGE
RIIIIGHT?! Between Unleash the Archers and this one, I'm beginning to believe it's impossible to do a BAD metal cover of this song!
Unleash the Archers was my top listened to Artist last year. My playlist consisted of 5 songs. Cleanse the Bloodlines, Faster Than Light, Awakening, The Matriarch, and Northwest Passage. That band single handedly inspired my whole homebrew DnD campaign. I am never not in the mood to listen to this song on repeat for hours. Jonathan Young and friends
knocked it out of the park.
Do yourself a favor and check out Dan Vasc's cover of this song it's fantastic as well
Unleashed the Archers is a cover version of Stan Roger's original. Put some respect on his name.
Too early to explore space, to late to explore the world, too young to travel, too old to change. This song reminds us that one of our primal needs is to travel. The song itself eventually thanks the men who explored the Canadian wilderness, using what was laid out before them. Perhaps there will come a day where people can explore space and come up with our own shanties, finding our own Northwest passage among the stars. But until that day, people like Jon, Caleb, Colm, Richaad will continue to inspire our imaginations
The Ocean is still largely unexplored 🛥
Might want to rethink that. Just because what HAPPENED to the crews of the 2 ships the song is about. I certainly want space to be explored, and while I realize it's almost guaranteed to happen, I don't want people to get lost or hopelessly trapped out there in a reflection of what happened in the Northern Passage. Still though... It is true that we all desire to explore the unknown I wish those who go on such journeys the best of luck.
@@Kamina.D.Fiercedunno bro, that sounds like some googoo gaga baby talk to me. I'd rather wind up just the same as the fallen explorers than be stuck as a miserable rock stuck in the same old place always doing the same old things. You're really just not an explorer, thats it.
@paloim Funny you say that when the entire reason those explorers died was because they went into uncharted territory despite being warned not to and got stuck. Literally trapped in one place for nearly 2 years doing nothing but freezing and starving to death. Until every last one died.
@@Kamina.D.Fierce how does that address my point? I already know the events of the Franklin expedition
I don't think anyone can take the crown from Brittney Slayes singing this (Unleash the Archers), but it still makes my Canadian heart soar! Fantastic job and rendition!
Canada approves 🇨🇦
Your'e absolutely right! UTA does the best metal version, but man alive is this great too!
Agreed, her power is unmatched, but this cover is great !
Agreed
I cry pretty much every time I listen to Slayes version.
Here's an idea to consider: you guys should start your own animated cartoon about your pirate characters going on adventures on the high seas featuring all of your covers (perhaps the ending song to each episode to set us up for each adventure). I bet it would be a HIT!
I cannot stress enough how fantastic your harmonies are. The combined power of your sea voices is always a pleasure to hear
This was deleted from Spotify and my playlist and immediately started to panic because this is such a beautiful cover it saddened me to see it disappear from my playlist. I’m so glad it’s still around to enjoy. Please don’t delete it !
So it’s not just me! I’m so angry, I hope it gets added back!
I came here for the same reason
Dude same!!! Bring it back 😭😭😭
Came for the same reason
Spotify cannot handle this much awesome.
Please don't ever quit making those sea shantys!
Every single on up to now gave me goosebumps.
And they are getting better and better!🎉
Seconded!
Maybe I've listened to too many of Jonathan's Disney metal covers, but this gives me vibes of like an animated adventure movie in the same vein as The Road to El Dorado or Treasure Planet, except about an expedition to the north pole.
- The first guy is the reasonable but stern captain who's leading the voyage.
- The second guy is the 20-something protagonist singing about how he wants to leave his port city hometown and explore the world on one of the ships he sees every day.
- The third guy is the captain's laid-back Number One who's friendly with the crew and always in good humor. He has a tragic backstory, but never lets it get him down. He helps the protagonist adjust to living on a ship when he first comes aboard and becomes his mentor figure.
- The fourth guy is the bittier hardass who's spent his entire life trying to find the Northwest Passage and failed, who initially buts heads with the protagonist but slowly learns to be less cynical over the course of the movie.
Go watch "The Terror" (2018) and see for yourself!
Unleash the archers's take on this song cannot be beaten, but this one is absolutely legendary! Phenomenal job!! ❤🔥🔥
*resumes headbanging*
Yes it can. Stan's version remains unmatched. Unleash The Archers killed it though.
I didn't know you guys were so Canadian! Awesome rendition!
They're not. Colm is Irish and the rest of them are American
@@Emil_Stoltz The Northwest Passage (the physical location) is associated with Canada, hence Alex's comment. The writer of the original sea shanty was also apparently Canadian, by the name of Stan Rogers.
@@heartoffire5902apparently seems a bit understated, from what I've heard he's a national treasure up there.
@@Emil_Stoltz They're all honorary Canadians after making this cover.
@@Sigil_Firebrand Fait enough
And i thought unleash the archers KILLED THIS... AND THEN JOHNATHAN RELEASED THIS YESSSSSSS
I wanna CRY at Jonathan's GORGEOUS HARMONY SCREAM at the end!! Matt Heafy must be so proud 😭😭😭
I don't know if it's intentional, but the "Hand Of Franklin" makes me think of the doomed Franklin Expedition.
That's because this song was written about that expedition!
@@RexPersonthing Yeah, the Franklin Expedition, did NOT end well.
The song is a direct reference to the people who explored Canada. David Thompson, Alexander Mackenzie, Sir John Franklin, and Henry Kelsy (notably Stan Rogers got his name wrong in the original lyrics and called him "Kelso", whoops!).
Are you simple?
Why is this not available on Spotify?
Why is this song no longer on Spotify:/?
I see this is inspired from Unleash the Archers cover of the song! I love it! Keep the Shanties alive!!!
Oh good, I'm not the only thinking about them :)
Actually the bands name is Unleash the Archers. Just listened to it when I saw this comment
@@kristencawker2582 I hate autocorrect sometimes lol

Almost as good as Unleash the Archers version, but they're Canadian, so to be expected 😂😂
But still a great job everyone on this effort nonetheless! 🤘🤘🤘
While I love the Archers version of this song, your cover is by far my favorite. The vocals are excellent as always, but what really sets it apart for me is the orchestral style. The horns and strings create this feeling of majesty that embodies the poetry and meaning of Stan Rogers’ lyrics
This was my most played song this past two weeks on Spotify, but it seems to have gone off Spotify 😭
YOOOO I'VE BEEN ASKING FOR THIS YEARS FOR THIS COVER, I AM A VERY HAPPY CANADIAN RN
WHAT A COVER!!!! From someone who lives near “The roaring Fraser to the sea” 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦.
I didn’t think Stan Rogers could probably be improved upon, but then again, I didn’t think Dickens could either until I saw A Muppet Christmas Carol. Good job, boys!
Thank you for covering this most precious piece of Atlantic Canadian culture and doing it every bit of justice it deserves.
It's not quite the song Stan sang, but it's everything I'd hoped from an ensemble cover done in this style.
Stan was taken far too soon, but I appreciate that his legacy lives on through covers like these.
Stan's life wasn't taken from him, he gave it to try and save others when that plane landed in flames. He probably would've regretted it to this day if he didn't at least try.
@@moblinmajorgeneral It was taken by the vicissitudes of fate. His choices were in an attempt to save others, certainly, but that doesn't change that life was far to short for a man as wonderful and talented as he.
@@moblinmajorgeneralIm the same type of person as Stan, someone who would not think twice to run in to help someone if they needed help, regardless of the danger and I can say with a high degree of certainty that he died with no regrets and would have hated himself if he didn't help. I know that if I died trying to save someone, I certainly wouldn't regret it.
A cover worthy of such a great song!
If you think for a second that the age of exploration is over, remember that the vast majority of the ocean's depths are known only by gravitational anomaly at 5km/pixel accuracy, with about 20% known from higher resolution sonar mapping, yet few have ever visited the midnight zone; more people have set foot on the moon than have reached the Challenger Deep, and every dive into the black reveals new species and unknown vistas. Even on land, there are remote corners of the world where no modern person has ever set foot, tribes as yet uncontacted by global civilisation, and countless species never before seen. And that's only on Earth. Who knows what wonders satellites won't show of the far corners of the solar system? One day, there will be a first person to drift through the clouds of Venus, to ski on the sands of Mars, to sail the methane seas of Titan, or to brave the solar corona itself.
I JUST found these shanty covers last night and set them to repeat while working my shift. Thank you for these, they are all incredible.
Love you guys singing sea shanties together
This song sets the explorer in my soul ablaze.
The vocals on this one go crazy! Awesome job, thanks for making my day better with the fantastic music :D
You are cool 😎
Yes! The whole crew is just sublime. Thanks for another great addition to my pirate metal playlist lads! 💕
Is it just me or has this song been taken off spotify in Australia? I was listening to it over the weekend and now it's gone from my playlist and it doesn't show up when searching for it
I like how all of them are drawn with historic clothes and then Colm is still in his sweater.
Always a treat to see the polished version of songs you developed on stream
That's made my birthday complete - thanks, Jonathan 👍😘 Love these metal shanties!
This is wonderful. Always here for Sea Shanty Metal

It's the kind of pirates that make you want to hit the road. Fifteen men on a dead man's chest. Yoo-hoo and a bottle of rum.
Considering I just started watching The Terror, the timing on this is uncannily appropriate. Fantastic cover guys, you added that extra metal energy without losing any of the warmth of the original

This is a classic sea shanty. Unbelievably close to what the sailors themselves sang
This song was written in the 80s by Canadian folk singer Stan Rogers.
