Best scene in the story is as follows. Cu Chulainn: goes to the King, "I must take up arms today!" King Conchobar: "you're like 12?! Why!?" Cu Chulainn: "The druid gave a prophesy about me. Druid: "I said whoever took up arms would have glory but die young" Cu Chulainn: "see it's about me"
Gotta respect a guy who was so badass he turned a really awkward meeting (showed up in the middle of the night, killed a dude's dog under a misunderstanding, and offered to be the dog's replacement until he found another) into a badass cornerstone of his myth and the source of his name.
he also tied himself to a rock by his intestines because, just dying gloriously in battle among a field of his slain foes wasn't Heavy Metal enough for him!
He also swung his sword into the stone of destiny one of the major four treasures of Celtic myth sadly the thing only worked two times after that but still cool
In my language we call the White Wolf"Șuier" witch means whistle, because the war flags used to be Wolf heads with whistles in their throat. It was meant to frighten enemies
Fun fact: Cu Chulainn's berserk rage/demon mode/riastrad as it's correctly called is by no means a "power out of nowhere". You see, Cu Chulainn is son of deity Lugh. Who in turn was a grandson of Balore. Yes, you heard it right, Cu Chulainn is grand-grandson of a towering demon lord who destroyed whole armies with his gaze alone. EDIT: over 1800 warriors heed my words. Thank you all!
This lad was so mad that when he died, one guy went to go see if he was dead, and his body spasmed and lopped off his hand. Everyone was too scared to go near him until a raven landed on his shoulder
Ah yes, Cú Chulainn, the Irish Hulk with the most terrifying spear to have ever existed, who was such a badass that his CORPSE beat a foe in battle. I do not have the words to properly convey how ACTUALLY epic this musical tale is. Excellent job by all!
Thank you! And yes, the Gáe Bulg! I sadly didn't even have time in the song to go into detail about it, haha... it was already 8 and a half mins just telling his life story.... Oh well maybe next time
My grandfather was a historian from Ireland. He taught me to be proud of my heritage and to respect the culture of others as he believed that being a historian was a noble cause. He taught me more history than any school did. I remember when he told me the story of Cú Chúlainn, I loved it so much that he bought me an Irish wolfhound pup and I named it Cú Chúlainn as a memoriam of him. I plan to one day follow his footsteps and become a historian too, to carry his believes and follow his motto: We take the ash and dust of the dead and turn it to cement so we may make a concrete place for them in the books. May we bring the dead back to life. Miss you all the time old timer. Thank you MoS for this beautiful song and memories it brings me.
He was very much right. Those who take it as a noble cause to preserve history are to be lauded for ensuring all others have the opportunity to learn from that which has occurred, that they may avoid the mistakes of the past and use the experiences of those who came before to create bridges to the future.
Imagine a God of War (2018) style game about Cu Chulainn, recounting his entire life from its heroic beginning to its tragic ending. That would be incredible.
I'm not sure of God of War 2018 would really suit Cu Chulainn. By all accounts, he defeated his foes a lot more rapidly than you do in the game. I think something more like Ghost of Tushima (I think I'm spelling that wrong) would work better. Bit Less RPG element's, faster combat, and enemies get scared of you and run away. Which sounds about right.
It would have to be based on Ulfe the Quarrelsome. He was real. Even the Vikings stated he was the greatest warrior of all time. Hordes of Vikings would run from him. Europe wouldn't exist, without the Celts. Everywhere in history, they turned the page to a new era.
There are 3 more in the works! Lots of new stuff coming soon including a Hades inspired song and also a remake of a certain 2013 song that lots of people wanted this year ;)
Fun fact about the version of the story I was told by my half Irish brother in law. After he had died cu was still tied to the rock and the armies left him there for like a week because they were terrified he was alive. Morrigan landed on him as a raven and then they approached. The first guy to touch him literally had his hands/head cut off when cu’s sword dropped on him.
Believe it or not, but modern English's grammar structure makes it a more rhyme poor language than most others (particularly have translations to and from English that still rhyme).
@@henrypaleveda7760 just because its easier to make the rhyme doesnt mean it will sound better. english is one of the languages that make the rhymes sound good while a language like hebrew, that is EXTREMELY reliant on weight and way of pronounciation makes the rhymes sound basic and boring. so ye, english is one of the better languages to make songs with
I think it's not 'old tongue' There are no old tongues and "new tongues" there are only "tongues that are awesome" and "tongues that are more awesome". Seriously I've heard many languages I never heard one language I could dislike. Each one has its own unique beauty... Alas, if only I could understand them all... I also can't understand how anyone can hate a spoken or even a dead language...
"I saw a shooting star when I was a boy. It was fast and without hesitation. Many friends witnessed this and were saddened by its ephemeral flash. At that moment, a quiet assurance has struck my heart. "My body will be like that star, burning away at a young age, and then disappear." Next thing I knew I was smiling. I had accepted the fact even as a young boy, that all great warriors are destined to perish like that star."
Never thought I would listen to the tale Cú Chulainn during a pandemic. Then again I thought I wouldnt ever see Cú Chulainn fighting Hercules, King Arthur and King Gilgamesh
Celtic Mythology is so fucking slept on. As an Irishman learning stories of our Pantheon of Gods was so fucking epic. I used to love history in primary school learning the Ulster Cycle and what not. We have an absolutely beautiful mythology
Irish myths are some of my favorite because the vibe is a lot different. Most other myths have the teller as the first people, in the book of invasions the Irish aren't even the first on the island. The biggest threat to many heroes is themselves, and even serious stories have some humor.
Lugh's spear had to be kept knocked the fuck out on poppy-seeds so it wouldn't just wander off to murder people, and he didn't wield it so much as take it for extremely violent walks through entire armies. Cú Chulainn's spear Gae Bolg had to be cut out of his enemies to retrieve it, and he had a sidekick in the Red Branch Knights whose job was basically to do that exact thing. When he was a kid, Cú Chulainn's party trick was hitting his sliotar (the ball for hurling) into the air, then leaping after it to hit it again before it could hit the ground, then throwing his javelin and his spear, chasing after them, and catching all three before they could land. Never mind the Greeks, the only mythology I can think of that hits like the Irish is the stories of Hindu gods going to war. Every one of them has some incredible weapon of mass destruction (or several) that can do things like "cut mountains in half," "vaporize entire armies with arrows made of light," or "decapitate a thousand soldiers with one throw."
@Rulya קארן Mórrigan Technically all stories in belief systems are mythology. The Irish or Greek tales of their gods and demigods used to be believed as part of a religion too. Btw, I am a person of faith, so this is not intended as a slight on religion
Yeah, even in the end of his story, Cú Chulainn didn't die when he was killed. This is something we must respect. Also, where is a mentioning of THE spear, Gáe Bulg?
@Bender Bending Rodriguez In Cuchullain's case, he had at least some standing to seek recompense. Emer, instead of outright rejecting Cuchullain, challenged him to the supposedly impossible task of training on the isle of Sky and Shadow for 1 year. After Cuchullain accomplished this, Emer went back on his word and refused to offer her hand. THAT was when he chose death. That said, it's debatable how Emer felt about all this.
@@bensmith8806 _aCcOrDiNg To WiKiPeDiA..._ Emer's father tried to marry her off to someone else, but when that person discovered that Emer loved Cú Chulainn, he refused her, since she should be with the man she loves. How she felt about the killing of her dad and servants, though...
@@619ver1 Point of view doesn't matter. He's a folk hero because he's from a folk tale. Folklore, legends, and mythology are a completely different beast with completely different terms than creative works.
He's not even an anti-hero. Anti-heroes usually end up doing some good despite themselves. All Cu Chulainn seems to have done is rampage across the Irish countryside being a dick and ruining lives for no good reason.
@@farkasmactavish The classical and folk definition of hero is someone of great power and importance to a culture. The idea that a hero is good wasn't a thing until King Arthur
Okay, if songs of heroes of history and myth are happening would a song on Vlad Tepes ever be possible? He's famous as Dracula but he was a terrifying monster to his foes but he protected his lands from two different armies, multiple countries and used the fear he struck into his foes to make them think he was some unholy demon who would could single handedly defeat them. Sadly there's little music about him, and even less that's good.
good person may be arguable or depend on what side you were on but you can't deny he was an awesome leader. He's a personal hero of mine because of just how awesome he was. He knew how to befriend or terrify someone. When you have an entire army saying they would rather fight the devil than you, you know you're scary
@@kylepeters8690 Never said he was a good person, but we are in agreement he was awesome. At the very least he was effective. In his native lands he is still considered a hero.
@@GreebleClown ah but the fact he wasn't a good person yet was such a great leader that makes him so fascinating to me. Sadly finding anything concrete has proven to be like finding a needle in a haystack since I find so many contradictions
As an Irish leprechaun I approve heartily, great to see one of our greatest mythological heroes actually get acknowledged outside of just Ireland. Great music as always
Folk metal? ☑️ A musician I have loved following the TH-cam of for years now? ☑️ Awesome mythology? ☑️ Legendary heroes? ☑️ A fan favorite of the Fate franchise?☑️ ☑️ (this is the comedy part of the list, not the erect Richard, so don’t take it too hard people.) What more reasons could I need to like this and add it to my favorites?
This legend is probably the wildest in history. Demi-born hero who was a great fighter, killed the most ferocious guard dog ever, took up it's post as an apology, warped into a great, unstoppable beast when furious only calmed by taking the fire out of him, trained under the greatest of warriors, gained both a battle brother and the Gea Bolg (can't remember if I'm spelling that right), warped in a war after finding a company of youth soldiers slaughtered, had to kill his battle brother with Gea Bolg, AND IT KEEPS GOING!!! If Cu Chulainn isn't the most amazing legendary warrior, he probably has the longest legend of them all.
About the Gae Búlg, the coolest weapon ever created by man: in some legends it's made from the bones of great sea monsters; in others, whenever it hits an enemy it shoots out spikes of iron that impale the target thoroughly, requiring the carcass to be torn to shreds for the legendary spear to be retrieved.
Speaking as an Irish Archaeologist, on the first listen this is exceptionally well made and pretty accurate! A modern ballad worthy of the legend, and I'm pretty impressed with the research that must have gone into this, for the less casually known bits of the legend, such as the killing of Emer's Family! I'll be listening a few more times and trying to spot all the references for sure. I'll edit this comment with any notes I have on repeated listens! Good job Gav, would love to hear more from Irish myths!
Upon his return to the comment section for editing, AlertedCoyote picked up a hot dog, not knowing it was literally dog. And so the tale of this Irish Archaeologist comes to an end.
We need to stand up and take down the left wing who is trying hard to destroy our people and identities. VOTE the filth out and take their power and wealth.
We have to stop and appreciate that this legend started basically with our protagonist murdering a dog with what's basically an elaborate golf club, lol.
He also beat up a whole team of other players in Hurling (can't rememebr if he beat up his own team as well who got angry that he didn't ask for their protection, as he was a new player and the youngest). And Hurling is a fast and brutal sport.
@@jfarrar19 This inspired my latest Pathfinder character, who is in fact the dog brought back as a Duskwalker. I made him a Summoner and Setanta is bound to serve him as his Eidolon as penance for the whole hurling incident. They're buddies now.
As someone who's worked in a Scottish themed pub in the US for 15 years, I'd just like to share the fact that I loop this song every year on St. Paddy's day in my headphones.
St. Paddy’s should have two d’s, not two t’s. This is because Paddy is short for Patrick, the masculine name, and Patty is short for Patricia, the feminine name.
First time I heard about Cu Chulainn was from the Gargoyles TV show. Really interesting myth. I shared the song on the Overly Sarcastic Productions subreddit (the community is built around world history and mythology), hope that's alright with you.
My family name McCullagh (Mac Con Uladh in its original Irish form, which translatates as Son of the Hound of Ulster) is descended from Cu Chulainn, as are a number of family surnames from Tyrone and surrounding counties in Ireland.. He was most certainly NOT an anti-hero - While is his death as portrayed in Mythology was tragic, it was largely the a consequence of a conniving and jealous queen.
Cu chulainn was always my favorite tale in any mythology. I was a fanatic, I ate it up left and right through out middle and high school. I read anything I could find. But his irish roots, the riastrad, the tale of strength woe and redemption. It just drew me in. Fascinating in every aspect, almost 12 yeara later I get married with a woman who wants a celtic wedding. And we got married on Lughs Day. Without realizing it, until the woman mentions "its lughs day" during our ceremony. My wife and I gave each other a surprised look when she mentioned it. My wife, knows my hobbies and was well versed in the story of satenta. What the chance in that? That twist of fate still sticks with me.
When i was a Kid, i had a Book with Old Celtic Tales. The Tale of Cu Chulainn was always my favorite, because he was simply the coolest of them all. I'm very pleased to hear a song about him :-). Edit: It turned out, that I still have the book! Time for a re-Read I guess.
@@quankhanh8533 fsn cu actually. I leave him with atlas MC at the last slot, even if my team gets wrecked, he can survive enough to get in 30k damage, which is usually enough since the enemy is on its last legs
I shit you not, I was rereading my favorite serious listening to an irish folklore playlist, cause the book has a lot of irish folklore, and when the person singing this said Cú Chulainn I went, "no fucking way" and I checked and I was right, and the main character of the book series is basically a badass reincarnation of Cú Chulainn and I was so happy I had found this song I almost cried.
Oh and if anyone's curious the book series' name is The Tapestry by Henry H. Neff. I'd definetely suggest it if you like fantasy, lore, gods, a lil' bit of angst here 'n there, war, and long ass book series cause there's five books. (Don't let the first book fool you the series is not a fantasy school book thing, it really kick off about halfway through the second book(a least in my opinion) and it then got really badass and cool, and then by the third book came the topics of battle and wars and all that fun stuff. In fact it was in the third book(personally my favorite of the five, though 4 and 5 were also awesome) where the main character legit pulled a Harry Potter and said "Aight imma head out" to the school n' straight up left, and then had his own adventure elsewhere on his own path to follow his own goal.)
@@dracology_0119 to this day I am a bit sad that it took me a few years to realize that there were more than the first 3 books, since only those were translated to my language making me wonder what kind of open ending that was. still one of the series I enjoyed most.
@@kristiankepley5944 The Battle of Thermopylae would probably be a pretty good candidate for that. It's an actual historical event, but it's surrounded by so many myths and legends, with the "300" movie and everything...
My brother always loved the tails of Cú Chulainn. He would have absolutely loved this song and video. He spent hours telling his younger brother stories of Finn Mckull and Cú Chulainn. He once paid me 20$ to read my first novel when i was 12. I developed a love of reading and stories that have stayed with me my entire life. Sadly my oldest brother passed away in 2013. As a FGO player and an aficionado of Celtic myth: Medb ruins everything. I'm glad she died such a ignominious end as being killed by a piece of cheese. Would love to hear about the ultimate Irish badass and mentor to the Hound of Cuhlainn: Scáthach

So ever since discovering this song a few weeks ago, I've tried to find out more about this actual legend of a man... First of all, I'm fairly certain this was the inspiration for LOTR's story of Turin along with the legend of Sigmund... Next, the real kicker for this legend is the insane time line of it all. I mean Setanta is like 5 years old when he kills the hound and becomes Cu Chulaínn, and 17 when he goes to train... His son (!!) comes to find him at age 7.. And lays the smack down upon everyone in the village which is why they're so damn scared of him "if this is a 7 year old boy, what happens when the men come attack?" so the Cu is sent to deal with the boy... And loses... A few rounds until he uses his legendary weapon, the barbed spear Gael.. Which he can literally only use once because its a confirmed kill if it hits (and it will.) so he strikes the child with it.. And then after he recovers from his battle rage... He realises the boy is his son.. And as the kid is dying, introduces him to all people in the village. So Cu is maybe 24 ish now... After that, he has to fight his best and possibly only friend. The sad part of the tale is that it starts out as a bit of a joke. They laugh and duel and then over the period of three days, it starts getting more and more Sinister. On the last day, Feriad is finally winning but the Cu calls for his spear and his charioteer floats it down the river... The Cu attacks with his sword and Feriad blocks, Cu then uses his toes to grab his spear and thrusts upwards entering Feriad body through the anus and releasing the deadly barbs that spread throughout Feriad's body, killing him. Then Cu's battle rage subsides and he wails... Despondent over what he's done. The final part I've read about is the most important bit of the story. Apparently in Celtic mythology there's something known as a géas which is like one of those RPG type curses which give you +1000% offence but - 200% defence or like Samson and his hair. Essentially, if he adheres to the géas, he gets untold power. Like dude can fight literal armies. Its also why his son was so OP. For the son, his géases were 1)once you've started the journey, no turning back. 2) must accept every fight 3)cannot tell anyone your name. Bear in mind the kid is like 7 so that's just some insane stuff there. For the Cu, his géases were that he had to eat any meat given to him by a woman and he could never eat dog meat. So when the Morrigan, who is like a death Goddess, came in the guise of a woman and offered the dog meat. Well Cu Chulaínn knew he was dead. Anyway that super long post is some of the backstory of this epic. And I now also am dying for an anime or TV series or movie about this guy because its an insane story that would be amazing on screen. Oh like done Arcane style or something.
Nice synopsis, but you are wrong on the inspiration part - the tale of Túrin Turambar is retelling of Kulervo's story from Finnish epos Kalevala. If you read both stories, you will find striking similarities, much closer than both stories you mention. There is also a book called The Story of Kullervo by Verlyn Flieger that explains in detail how Kalevala's Kullervo, Tolkien's Kullervo and Túrin are related. A word of warning though - even though the book itself isn't a thick one (192 pages), it certainly isn't a light reading either. Language of the story itself is pretty archaic and the commentary is academic through and through, with many allusions and references to deep lore about Tolkien.
@@fealiathecthelion4465 Oh thanks! I'll definitely go look for the story. Hopefully my library has a copy as well so I might be able to plod through the hard copy.
And if i remember correctly cu fight the army of medb that was invading without recovering backlash from eating dog meat for about 3 days and even when he die army did not dare to advance for they scare that he would not truly dead and strike them from back when they advance
i love how miracle of sound describes the hound as "A huge and terrible beast!!!" and then he overlaps that with the picture of this adorable old looking doggo that probably just wants someone to scratch him behind his ear XD
listened to this on repeat, had a dream Cú Chulainn taught me to play chess, woke up and laughed because it doesn't seem like he was the type of guy who thought anything through before doing it
In the Fate series, every servant's class is defined by their legend, servants can be multiple classes, like Hercules, he can be a berserker or an archer, because in his myth he shows traits of both. Why am I telling you this? Well, there is a Caster Cu, casters have lots of extremely smart and rational people among them. So your dream is not too unbelievable.
I had the same dream, only mine came true which is unbelievable i know, because of my dream i now have nuts the size of tennis balls.. well i atleast hope that's what it is.....
Actually Cu Chulainn was also famously intelligent. Part of how he wooed Emer was stumping her in a riddle contest (with riddles even modern scholars can barely figure out mind you). And Emer was said to be the smartest woman in Ireland.
The saddest part about the Connla story is that he was still a young man, around 16 or so, and was said to have been skilled enough with the spear that Cu had to go all out and killed him. If Connla didn't die, or if he would have fought him with a few more years of training, he could have become the strongest warrior in Celtic Myth.
I don't know if you will ever read this Gav, but I just wanted to thank you for all of your songs. It is always a pleasure to listen to them, they always make me smile, even if I'm not feeling well. When I go get some bread in the morning, I enjoy either the sunset, or the rain, whatever wheather I'm given. Or, like today, it's both, two beatufil sides of nature. And the child inside me awakens, and I just smile, jumping all around, definitely not looking like a first year university student, and singing your songs. And then I know everything is alright. As one czech song goes: As long as there is singing, there is not dying yet. Please never stop making more songs. Thank you Gav. Oliver

Uh, which version of Arthur's Legend? After a certain point they stop being true mythology and turn into christianized propaganda to use as a means of either criticizing or supporting the current king.
This is awesome. Sometimes MoS's songs get a bit samey, but this is both reminiscent and distinct, with a flair and a grimness perfect for ancient legend.

Irish mythology is up there with Greek mythology when it comes to being hardcore as fuck
@@thefez-cat The Gae Bolg is Odin's spear. It splits mountains and can literally never miss.
@Rulya קארן Mórrigan Technically all stories in belief systems are mythology. The Irish or Greek tales of their gods and demigods used to be believed as part of a religion too.

@jeremyfrost2636 There's a few obvious ones like Ben Kei, Musashi Miyamoto or even some of their gods like Hachiman.
As a FGO player and an aficionado of Celtic myth: Medb ruins everything. I'm glad she died such a ignominious end as being killed by a piece of cheese.
Would love to hear about the ultimate Irish badass and mentor to the Hound of Cuhlainn: Scáthach
... but Scathach was Scottish :)
@@paulsmith5752 woops, well still relevant to the Hound of Cuhlainn. Actually I'm down for anything remotely celtic like Pwyll, Fionn mac Cumhaill or anything Tuatha Dé Danann related.
Yeah but at least in fgo shes total waifu.
@@normlord6357 Cu's Waifu to be specific. He not only slept with Aife, Scathach also gave him the friendship of the thighs which meant sex when Cu was about to graduate from her tutelage.
@@flipkiller8521 Look man do you really think a character having a wife or husband stops anyone from considering them their waifu or husbando? If we go into specifics %90 or more of the characters were married or was in a relationship.
And if i remember correctly cu fight the army of medb that was invading without recovering backlash from eating dog meat for about 3 days and even when he die army did not dare to advance for they scare that he would not truly dead and strike them from back when they advance

listened to this on repeat, had a dream Cú Chulainn taught me to play chess, woke up and laughed because it doesn't seem like he was the type of guy who thought anything through before doing it
In the Fate series, every servant's class is defined by their legend, servants can be multiple classes, like Hercules, he can be a berserker or an archer, because in his myth he shows traits of both. Why am I telling you this? Well, there is a Caster Cu, casters have lots of extremely smart and rational people among them. So your dream is not too unbelievable.
You would think that, but one of the myths about Lugh, his father, suggests he invented a game called "Fidchell," so I wouldn't be so sure.
Let's take the moment to appreciate how far Cu'Culainn's name has spread compared to 40 years ago. It's like Mario now.

Who knows what would've come about if Cu Chulainn hadn't felled his own son......
I fucking love this song. I always trip at "bore an abandoned son" though. I keep thinking it should be "sired an abandoned son". That way it doesn't sound like he was the one who got pregnant
Knowing him, he probably could have been the one who got pregnant and his child was just so tanky it didn't need a womb to survive whilst it developed.
It leaves out the best part though. When Lugaid came to decapitate his corpse, Cu Chulainn was still holding his sword and took Lugaid's arm off--after he was already dead.

Lovely song and representation. Though, left out a personal fave of mine. After Cu Chulainn died, his enemies did wait till a raven landed on him to take him for dead. However, his arm then fell down, sword still in hand, and either disarmed his enemy, or possibly castrated his enemy. Even in death, he had one last strike.
