It's a Scottish folk-lore for "Seal Folk" and most of the stories are about men tricking female silkies to stay with them by hiding their seal skins which they can take off at will, but are unique and irreplacable so without it they can't return to their seal form.

There is the subtle flirtatious behavior, with how she cups his face and whispers in his ear and the way she poses herself on the board. She thinks the dude is cute- she likely followed him out of the bay out of curiosity. But then seeing he really needed someone to talk to, she listened to his woes. Gave him a gift (physical with the pendant and emotional with her song) to remind him he’s never alone and life can improve. And when they meet again, although she is fully human there is no reason to believe she gave up her seal skin. Seals symbolize strength, protection, and prosperity for sailors so the fact that the selkie gave him a seal pendant and then transformed into a seal basically symbolizes that if he's ever in trouble, the seal pendant will be there to give him strength, protection, and prosperity on the seas!

Using horrendous amounts of water and electricity, depending on very poorly paid labor of people in developing countries, flooding internet with fakes and mediocrity, people on medical studies using it instead of writing their own assignments, reducing the artist market by great numbers and making people believe that they should strive for fast and shiny mediocre results instead of the artistic journey and satisfaction of developing a skill. It's especially painful when a writer or a musician - so an artist uses AI, so I'm super grateful for this project. It's a wonderful song with wonderful art!

That's a misuse and abuse of AI in my opinion. I think it's a valuable tool for certain things. Kinda like a copier, I see AI as a tool rather than art. We can agree to disagree though.

That's also the guy from Tale of Shadow! That captain has been featured multiple times, same hat with his eyes never shown. Tale of Shadow is the first song on this channel I believe, with one of the lines being that his eyes were stolen away Edit, the exact line is this, "Her rigging came alive. She hung my crew before me eyes she stole my sight and cursed me captain of the shadow." In that song the captain sings about hunting a "Shadow", a legend that came alive. It seems is may be a ghost ship of sorts because of the previous lines stating, " As we approached her shell, The skies went silent, seas went calm as if by spell. No signs of fight or flight were in her. All was well until I tried to take her helm"

Had to go back and listen to Keelhauled Joe because of one part which is at 2:28. The sound there reminds me of that song, so I can’t help but wonder is he Keelhauled Joe or is the old sailor on the burning ship Keelhauled Joe. We see the Captain of the Shadow throughout until the sailor gets on the boat, so it can’t be him unless it’s his younger self. Am I the only one here that?
I want to believe this couple gets to have a happy ending I find it interesting that there is a compass in the box he puts the pendant- implying there may be a connection? I can see the captain who told the Compass narrator to “follow the compass that beats in his chest” being the old sailor. Though, I’m not sure if the timeline adds up- the compass narrator left home at an unspecified age, wandered for 12 years then met Kate, and they were together for 20 years before her passing. So i estimate he’s in his 40’s by the end of the song Also if the MC here is one from compass then in the scene with the old sailor the man is in his 20s; so if they were the same person we would’ve seen Kate in the fast back. I get the impression the main character here is in his 30’s and post time skip he is in his 40s when he reunites with the selkie. BUT, that could be just the facial hair. Maybe only a few years pass between the first meeting and when they reunite Edit: Or the old sailor is the narrator of the compass; and the main character here is his son / adopted son. And the compass holds significance as the symbol of his father figure / mentor

The part I mentioned sounds like keelhauled Joe, even how the Sailor tells the selkie his crew was claimed by the ocean floor. @ Yea, I prefer the interpretation of the Old Sailor is Kheelhauled Joe and the male protagonist of this song is the lone survivor of Phantom of the Sea crew. And maybe the Old Sailor is the same as the narrator of the Compass? Either way, I want the protagonists of Broken Mast Bay to have a nice long life together and a peaceful retirement. The female protagonist living as a human on land between voyages, then as a selkie on voyages with the man she choose. She don’t need a man, but that one she wants.

Love story was not what I was expecting here, Neal's animation was lovely as always, the song was just as good, I especially loved how the guy from Unsinkable was featured as a background character
That's also the guy from Tale of Shadow! That captain has been featured multiple times, same hat with his eyes never shown. Tale of Shadow is the first song on this channel I believe, with one of the lines being that his eyes were stolen away
Edit, the exact line is this, "Her rigging came alive. She hung my crew before me eyes she stole my sight and cursed me captain of the shadow."
In that song the captain sings about hunting a "Shadow", a legend that came alive. It seems is may be a ghost ship of sorts because of the previous lines stating, " As we approached her shell, The skies went silent, seas went calm as if by spell. No signs of fight or flight were in her. All was well until I tried to take her helm"

@@MichaelCaswell-q5w yeah that's why his eyes are never shown. Hell in the 'Unsinkable' video, he has a ribbon covering where his eyes would be, which is often used in fiction to show a character is blind and/or missing their eyes
Had to go back and listen to Keelhauled Joe because of one part which is at 2:28. The sound there reminds me of that song, so I can’t help but wonder is he Keelhauled Joe or is the old sailor on the burning ship Keelhauled Joe. We see the Captain of the Shadow throughout until the sailor gets on the boat, so it can’t be him unless it’s his younger self. Am I the only one here that?
I want to believe this couple gets to have a happy ending
I find it interesting that there is a compass in the box he puts the pendant- implying there may be a connection? I can see the captain who told the Compass narrator to “follow the compass that beats in his chest” being the old sailor.
Though, I’m not sure if the timeline adds up- the compass narrator left home at an unspecified age, wandered for 12 years then met Kate, and they were together for 20 years before her passing. So i estimate he’s in his 40’s by the end of the song
Also if the MC here is one from compass then in the scene with the old sailor the man is in his 20s; so if they were the same person we would’ve seen Kate in the fast back.
I get the impression the main character here is in his 30’s and post time skip he is in his 40s when he reunites with the selkie.
BUT, that could be just the facial hair. Maybe only a few years pass between the first meeting and when they reunite

Or the old sailor is the narrator of the compass; and the main character here is his son / adopted son. And the compass holds significance as the symbol of his father figure / mentor
@ I was thinking that compass connected to the Shadow Captain. I suppose we’ll have to wait for our Captain to tell us what story connects where. The part I mentioned sounds like keelhauled Joe, even how the Sailor tells the selkie his crew was claimed by the ocean floor. He said the songs are connected, but hasn’t told us how they’re connected. We have a mystery and with each song it’s another piece of the puzzle.
@ Yea, I prefer the interpretation of the Old Sailor is Kheelhauled Joe and the male protagonist of this song is the lone survivor of Phantom of the Sea crew.
And maybe the Old Sailor is the same as the narrator of the Compass?
Either way, I want the protagonists of Broken Mast Bay to have a nice long life together and a peaceful retirement. The female protagonist living as a human on land between voyages, then as a selkie on voyages with the man she choose. She don’t need a man, but that one she wants.
I can imagine a group of the sailor's friends singing along as they pound their flagons against the tables and stamp their feet to the song.

Wait so are you saying this sailor/narrator is the captain of the shadow or is a survivor from the shadow incident? I personally want him to be a survivor to expand the lore even further of there was not just one survivor (the captain) but two (this sailor/narrator) (unless we decided that the captain didn't survive and was just taken in/enveloped by the shadow (idk I only discovered this had lore like an hour ago lol) edit: nvm this cant be captain of the shadow bcs he still has eyes, but then that makes me wonder how did he survive the shadow considering how brutal she was unless she didnt see him as a threat/crewmate as he was thrown off the ship in that little life boat thingy in the animatic
@ChaosPotatoVII This surely cant be the Captain of the Shadow himself (he, or more like Sailor North was seen in this animatic too), but I just was shocked how well this actually fits the previous song itself. Maybe the Shadow just didn't see the survivor as a threat... gosh, what if he was the only one who tried to talk the captain off of trying to capture the shadow?! Sir/Madam, I don't know who you are but you've given me so many ideas for my book in just one comment 0_0
