This shanty describes the navigational challenge to sail from Spain to England, crossing the bay of Biscay. As the Isles of Ushant (north-west of France) and the Scillies (south-west of England), marking the entry of the english channel, are to far apart (about 180 km with 1 league = 5.5 km -> 35 leagues) to be used for navigation, sounding (measuring the depth) was used to determine if the channel of England was reached. This was the case, if the depth reached about 80 metres (1 fathom = 1.8 metre -> 45 fathoms = 81 metres) and the ground (bottom) of the sea was comprised of chalky, white sand. Hoving is a sailing maneuver to slow down/halt the ship, in order measure the depth (to make sounding clear). Then the song lists various landmarks along the english south coast, namely Rame Head (south of Plymouth), Start Point, Isle of Portland, Isle of Wight, Beachy Head, Fairlight Cove, Dover and the South Foreland lighthouse. "The Downs" refers to the sea next to the towns of Kingsdown and Deal, north of Dover. The "Shank Painter" is a leash, securing the anchor to the ships side. The beam, the anchor hangs from, is called the Cathead and the "Cat-Stopper" fastens the anchor. Letting go of both is simply the procedure to lower the anchor. "Clew", "Tack" and "Sheet" refer to the fastening of the corners of the sails. "Haul up your clewgarnets, let tacks and sheets fly" refers to the process of trimming the sails.
@@solidonseraindogthetenth1679u need to watch the movie Jaws. Came out in the late 60s early 70s if I recall correctly. Classic movie. For a Hollywood adaptation of a book it's surprising close.
coming from a chronically tired student - this is so much better than caffeine. if sea shanty metal gets me through embryology this semester i'll owe y'all a beer
YAY!! A new shanty from Jonathan and his crew! That's just what I needed to cheer me up after being stuck in traffic for the last goodness knows how long!! Thank you 😘 Great work by all, as usual 👍☺
Always nice to hear about another sea shanty. If you want a suggestion, "As the bottle runs dry", from Wolfsbanes. You'd be doing an awesome job on that cover.
I'm planning on running a pirate themed DnD campaign for my group in the future, and I would LOVE to use some of your music for it! On another note, ANOTHER BANGER!!!
Been trying to do a book on fantasy pirate novel, called the Lost Ghosts of The Bermuda where two brothers become nitrous pirates hunting slave ships until their untimely demise, the great grand daughter of one of the 2 would find the 3rd ship after escaping a slave ship after killing it's captain and most of the crew and freeing the slaves and eventually wreaking the ship on an island that holds a secret, a 3rd ship, spoken in eerie ghost stories of being cursed and haunted known only as the Wailing Banshee, for it name was given to it, because the last most enemy sailors saw, was the flash of 72, 48, 32 pounder guns, and steel of swords and flashes of pistols before plundering the ship and sinking it, but like it's name, it vanishes as fast as it came, a haul thick and durable, a length to great of most known countries to have built, and a speed that'd put most swift sailing navy vessels at the time to shame
Nice cover guys. Perfect timing for me since I just watched Jaws and with all the "pirate" song there is still a chance you might one day do "Master of the seas" from Ice age 4.
What if I made a whole album of Shanties???? Presave if you want it! ffm.to/seashantymetal
You have no idea how long I have dreamed of having this.
Yes!!
About time!
I want
yes please

It's actually a map in verse of how to sail from s Spain to London . It's pretty cool, historically speaking
I think we're gonna need a bigger ship to carry this crew of legendary voices
I've JUST decided to replay AC4 after 10 years and this just dropped, can't be a coincidence

Now this is indeed ranting and roaring like true British sailors! (Or Irish sailors, in Colm's case.)
