FORGOTTEN 1964 Chevy II - Will It RUN AND DRIVE After Sitting For Years?

  • This old 64 Chevy II popped up on marketplace right after I got home from work and sat on the couch to relax. 45 minutes later I owned it. Can we revive this grandpa special and put her back in service?
Dani wants to make it into a race car.... A race car
Straight axle gasser? tunnel ram? 327? 4 speed? radiused wheel wells. I have a real problem.

They are nice looking cars. A friend of mine ordered a 65 one with a 327 and 4 speed from the factory back in the day. It was a fine running and good looking car. Had trim packag that encircled the sides of the car. 👍

My father's friend had a '64 with a built 454 full cage and narrowed rear in the late seventies, he ruled the streets. Painted off white, with full exhaust, I was in my mid teens, it was my first ride in a real mid 10 sec car! One of those memories I will keep forever...

  • @fred7854

Hey Dan, If you end up putting in a different transmission, don't use the cooler in the radiator. Use an external trans cooler. The cooler in the radiator may be leaking, causing water to get into the transmission. Take the lines off the radiator and plug them. I've seen this happen a lot when I was working in a transmission shop. Not telling you what to do, just a little advice.

  • @tmackinator
    @tmackinator ปีที่แล้ว +11

Chances are your trans cooler in the radiator is shot. There is water in the trans fluid A rebuild of a th 350 would be great content for the channel and you easily have the skills to do it. The detent cam places the valves in the valve body in the correct position for proper operation. Low and reverse share the same apply piston so problems with the apply piston can affect both gears.

This definitely brings back memories of my 63 coupe that I purchased for 500 dollars back in 87 or 88 but put in a 350 that was built up in it really enjoyed it but my wife hated it because I was always working on it plus just had the family thing going on plus the house but yeah a street rod would be great Dan and you might even let Dani drive it some maybe put a big block or LS in it for shits and giggles but if your going to fix the floors you might as well fix that rear drivers quarter hope to see more of the duce be careful and stay safe my friend God love ya both

Dan, the transmission friction material is bonded to the steel disc with a water soluble glue. No amount of fluid flushing is going to stop the friction material from falling off. You will have to build or replace the transmission. (Which is a 1969 or newer) Then, you need to have the radiator repaired.

With the garage roof leaking, this is the perfect time to jack it up a couple of feet so you can install a proper lift. The building wont weigh much once the asphalt is removed. Add two feet to the bottom of the walls and garage door.

Those old 6 bangers had solid lifters. They all sounded like diesels. The little Nova is a keeper, for sure. A buddy had a '66 Nova that we did the full deal to. 327, huge cam, 13:1 compression, dual quad tunnel ram, straight axle, 4 speed, 456 gears with welded spiders. It was so light it was wicked fast and hard to control.

I built a 63 chevy 2 post in the early 70's- I put a small block and remove the original 6.
what I learned in the process of switching to a v8: nova had its own block for (clutch linkage), exhaust manifolds, oil pan, pump pick up
(sump opposite from a standard chevy) due to the steering tie rod, oil pick up, front springs.

You can spend$300 in trans fluid. Trying to flush it out. It's much easier just to pull it . Then install external trans cooler

Great find Dan. Dude. You have to build that into a gasser. You made all the right comments in the episode. Race car, straight axle. Do yourself a favour and forget about spending a dime on the shitty front end. Do the speedway straight axle kit up front. Radius the rear wheel openings and give it a gasser stance. The car will have all kinds of value for episodes and what it will be worth. Gets some other stuff done but put this on the agenda. It will totally be worth it. For now just get it running and moving so you can move it around. Build that baby into a killer gasser later.

My first car was a white 1963 Nova SS. This was back in 1975, when I was 16. It was originally my dad's car, he bought it in 1973, so it was only 10 years old when he got it. He gave it to me when I got my license. Original Arizona car, no rust. It wasn't perfect, but it wasn't too bad either. Everything was intact. It had a straight six and a 2 speed powerglide with a console and floor shift. Mine was a hardtop model with frameless glass and had more angular B pillars than that one. I swapped out the six for a 283, did some performance work to it, put air shocks on it to raise the rear end, and put 14" American Racing five slot aluminum wheels and Mickey Thompson L60-14s on it. I kept the stock 283 exhaust manifolds, and had a guy weld up some header pipes that bolted onto them, put on a set of welded one piece glass packs, and ran the exhausts out the side, just under the doors. I don't think there were any laws back then where you could put the exhaust. I do remember being able to smell the exhaust while stopped with the engine running, so I probably should have put them somewhere else. I kept that car and worked on it for almost 10 years. Just one year after I got it, my county started emissions tests for all vehicles 1967 and newer, which pretty much made it impossible to modify them. So for a long time I was stuck with pre '67 cars. I finally bought some property in the next county over, which did not have emissions testing, and was able to move up to '70s cars.
Now you can insure and register any 1970s car and some newer ones as collector cars, which exempts them from emissions testing.
Back in those days, the most common way to raise the back end of a car with leaf springs was to use longer shackles. But you couldn't do that on the '63 Nova, because it had SINGLE leaf springs, and doing that would bend the springs. Either using air shocks or replacing the springs with multi leaf springs were the only options.
I was cringing big time seeing that car get smashed up by that Bobcat. I know the bumper was already ruined, but the rear floor pans and spring mounts are pretty weak on those cars. It's easy to do damage far from the point of impact.
They made a lot better cars in 1964 than they do today. Like 10 times better. Build it late '60s/early '70s style. You can get really wide rear tires on it by using air shocks to raise to rear end to clear the tires without having to cut out the fenders. Put some 295/50-15s on it. They are only 26.6 diameter, and just over 12" wide.
That transmission is toast. Coolant leaked from the radiator to the transmission cooler, and circulated through the whole transmission, then sat in there for years.

Chevy II 1962 - 67 , 4 , 6 & V-8 ( 283 ) . 65 got a 250 & 327 , both 250 & 300 HP . 66 & 67 got a Killer 350 HP 327 ( for the time period ) . 68 Name changed to Nova . 66 & 67 350 hp 327's came with skinny 14" tires , Corvettes with the 350hp 327's had skinny tires as well . Watched a pair of brand new 350 hp Chevy II's race against each other at the drag strip as well as a pair of brand new 350 Corvettes race as well . Neither driver of each class failed to slack off and when they raced spectators cleared the side lines . They needed new tires when they departed the drag strip , but man they put on a Hell of show for everyone . $5000 Canadian was a good investment . BTW is the Chevy II an Merica built car or a Canaddion built motorcar ? AWESOME VIDEO .
