I have been a subscriber for a while now and this is by far my favorite post of yours. I was born in Ireland, emigrated to the US in 1988 and am now a US citizen. My brother served in the Irish Navy and graduated from the Navy base many years ago. I have visited Cobh and your video brought back fond memories. I had heard on Spike Island but had never been there. I had been on the Navy base and truly enjoyed your video. Keep up the good work. Gearoid O’Hagan
I’m a native Californian from the Bay Area. I was born in Oakland which is across the Bay from San Francisco. I now live 2.5 hrs from San Francisco and have never been to Alcatraz. I definitely need to rectify that.
Munster is the Province, Cork is a County in Munster. The 2nd biggest city in Ireland is the City of Cork and Cobh is a town in the County of Cork. We live in County Wexford which is in the Province of Leinster. Love Cobh.. so pretty 😍
Tony, Thank you for sharing your cruises, and your land travels. I live through your videos. Places and things I will never get to see. I don’t comment often, but I sincerely appreciate your time, and your expertise. Cohn and Cornwall are two of my favorite places you have taken us. They are so picturesque and lovely. Thank you for everything. Blessings to you and your lovely Jenny B.
As a Corkonian, I knew you would enjoy Spike Island! Cobh is one of my favourite towns in County Cork. County Cork (NOT Cork County) is the largest county in Ireland. It is one of six counties in the Province of Munster (the other counties in Munster are Clare, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford). Cork City, where I was born and raised, is a city of approximately 120,000 people. It is situated on the River Lee where it empties into Cork Harbour. As you have observed, Cork Harbour is a large protected harbour and in fact is second only to Sydney Harbour in Australia in size. I’m glad you enjoyed your brief time in Cobh and hope you return someday. There is a lot more to see!
Thanks for coming back, Tony! Just a couple of points of clarification: I know the guide explained it, but as many Americans don’t understand, we are an independent country that was colonised (like you guys!) but for 800+ years for us. Our history is our own, not British!!! We have been independent for over 100 l years after centuries of trying to be so. Cobh is a town in County Cork, which is in the larger province (four in Ireland) of Munster. Provinces matter less to us than counties, identity-wise! We have 32 counties. Please come back again and see us! Also, to clarify a previous commenter’s post: everyone has to learn Irish (the language) from the age of 4/5 to 17/18 in school. It’s taught pretty badly, though (like many languages in many countries) so a lot of people don’t speak it either well or at all. There are pockets of Ireland where it is spoken daily, but they are small.
I'm glad you wrote that because my mother was born and raised on Springhill, Killagoley, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford. She never mentioned the province. I had to look it up! I guess they're more like regions and have no legal purpose. 💚☘️💚
@@junedunne Exactly! As far as I know, they date back over a thousand years, so I think in the time of the Irish High Kings (before the British colonised us), they did have political importance, but not really now!
It is so very enjoyable to live vicariously with you and Don. You’ve obviously traveled together for a number of years. Based on something you mentioned earlier, you’ve been traveling/cruising together since 2019
Thanks for the tour of spike island and your narrative of what you saw, I was able to tour Alcatraz back in 1976 and volunteered to be put in solitary with 5 other people, it was so dark you could not see your hand in front of your face, our time was about 5 minutes could not imagine doing months, years or weeks in something like that.
Never been to Ireland. I visualize it as depicted in an old movie, The Quiet Man, John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara and Barry Fitzgerald (1952). If that Ireland still existed, I would want to buy a wee cottage in the middle of lush green pastures and escape the current craziness of today's civilization. Dreams 😊
Please look up the pronunciation and history of the RMS Lusitania. She was also Cunard ocean liner. When constructed she was the largest in the world and was sunk by a German U-Boat just over a year after Titanic sank. My grandmother and her family came to America on the Lusitania. And thanks for the great tour of Spike Island. You saved me 56 Euros. We don't have to go there when we return to Cobh next year.
Thank you for sharing this with us!!! My dad's family is from County Cork Ireland!! So it was interesting for me to see a glimpse of where my ancestors came from!!❤❤❤
Thanks Tony! As a Canadian, I am also proud to say that I have deep roots from Ireland. This video of part of my family heritage was wonderful. Keep up your great work my Friend!
People who are hard of hearing or have hearing loss for some reason can miss quite a bit of the conversation. It doesn’t mean they are profoundly deaf. My OH has severe hearing loss but can manage quite well with his hearing aid tech if people are clear and don’t speak too fast. That is what the guides mean.
Thanks for bringing us along, Tony! Brings back memories of our British Isles cruise aboard Regal in Sept 2023. Cobh is such a beautiful place! Spike Island looks like a great place to explore - I love the history!
As a Dublin girl, with family in cork I love hearing you talk about Cobh, it's very endearing! You knew more than most that it was in Munster. You should watch the wind that shakes the barley movie!
Wonderful job, Tony! One side of my family is from Cork and probably immigrated through Queenstown/Cobh in 1850. I got a little choked up when you pointed that out. Thank you!
Aunt Nellie's is an absolute must, I'm in there for salty licorice 😊 The cathedral is really cool. It has this like 6 foot tall holy water tank outside.
I recently did the California coast on Discovery Princess, Alcatraz was by far one of the best excursions I’ve ever done. I really enjoyed the learning of the history and stories about it. Worth the trip
The park was dedicated to JFK who’s grandparents were Irish immigrants to your country. We loved visiting Spike Island. We have been to Cobh five times over the years.
I had relatives who left from Cobh (Queensland at the time), leaving loved ones and all things familiar for new adventures in America. I am so thankful for their spunk!
Thank you for recording and showing us your excursion-Spike Island looks a lot larger than I thought it would be. Tony you are in good shape to be able to do all that walking you did yesterday at the estate, that down hill town, and today with all of the walking.
Cobh is where my grandmother was born and raised and my grandfather hailed from Belfast. I so can't wait to visit their home towns next year on the Emerald Princess! 😍
Your land odysseys always the best feature due to your excellent commentary. Always enjoy them. Also having sailed the Caribbean Princess a couple times it was great seeing one of our favorite ships.
Your tour of Spike Island was very interesting. When I stopped in Cobh on a cruise, we took a train up to Cork, saw castle ruins in the distance, walked around, took photos, ate lunch in an out of the way pub, then went back to Cobh, walked around saw what we could, had a cold beer at the Mauretania bar there at 43:43. It was a lovely day and a beautiful place to visit.
Tony, another fantastic vlog. You do a hell of a job showing us & telling us all the things. Love it. Hoping to do a British Isles next year & will use your vlogs as reference. Thanks so much! Harriet from PA
As always, loving the cruise and port tour videos. Always fun and interesting. This time it’s even more fun, because I watch Don’s videos too, and get his perspective of the same places. Growing up in Canada, serviette was the only word I knew for napkin. The closer to the US border you are, the more often you will hear napkin instead, but I still use serviette anyway. Oh, and the “mug shot” sounds like a cute little souvenir (if it’s not ridiculously expensive).
Thanks for taking us along on your excursion. It was very informative and very interesting because my Nanas grandparents came from Cork. Thank you and thank God for me too. Hope you had a great cruise and tell Jenny I said hi.😊🛳️
This was one our favorite ports of call in June on HAL's Nieuw Statendam, second only to Isle of Man. Beautiful city! We hiked up to the cathedral for fabulous views (there was a funeral in progress at the time). The painted buildings and all the Titanic history made for a fabulous day.

I live in Dublin and have been in Cobh many times but never went over to the island. I intend to put that right next time I’m there!
The Princess package is only 15 per day. How hard would it be to _just_ find a local pub and quaff four or five pints of that lovely local Irish, Scottish, and English ales and beers. (You wanna meet the people? They are at The Rob Roy and Kellys.) Irish Gaelic is just called Irish now.
Cobh is in the County of Cork. It was formerly known by the name Queenstown ( when Titanic visited to pick up passengers and mail before sailing west to her fate)

We visited Ireland in ‘68 and there was never a more confused kid than me listening to a speech by a dead man.
